I just picked some hossinator tomatoes I started in September. Took forever to grow with the cooler weather and a pain to have to cover them during these last few cold spells. But I had dozens of almost softball size tomatoes.
I just got a shipment from y’all this past week. Have most of what you just reviewed. Been planting 20ish varieties the past few years trying to find a core group of 6 or so varieties to plant every year. So far hossinator, red snapper, and lemon boy have made the grow every year list.
Lemon Boy Plus doesn't taste anything like a regular yellow or orange tomato. It's quite sharp and tangy. It's really good in that lane though. LBP is easy to tell against any other tomato.
Whoaah as bitterly cold as it is right now here in Iowa, its hard for me to wrap my head around thinking about planting anything. But I sure do love my tomatoes and peppers. I love trying new varieties.
Been waiting to see what’s new for this year! Thanks for the info, I’ll review again and try a few, for sure! You’re right about those crazy Tie Dyes! I’ve grown a bunch of Brad’s varieties over the years and they’re always fun!
Hossinator, Bella Rosa, and Red Snapper are varieties I like to grow every year. We planted Lemon Boy last year and they did very well for us. I'm also planting Celebrity Plus this spring.
Yes yes yes. I'm gonna grow Hossinator this year for the first time. But My heart belongs to Bella Rossa and Red snapper. I still plant a few Cherokee maters cause the taste is so superior
I'll definitely give some of these a try. I like the fact that you have some with good disease resistance. I want to try that Purple Boy and Better Boy Plus especially. My regular Better Boy had trouble in the humidity this past summer in Georgia and my two Cherokee Purple plants died soon after transplanting them in the ground. I was so disappointed because I really love Cherokee purple and was looking forwards to getting some fruit. My Better Boy produced a few but kind of a wimpy harvest.
I have grown Red Snapper, Summer Pick and Tachi (Roma) and they have been wonderful producers for my market garden. Hoss has some other varieties as well.
Just ordered the Esterina variety from Hoss Tools. Looking forward to growing it, I love the Sun Sugar and the Esterina appears to be a better choice (meaning the cracking issues the Sun Sugar has) Good luck with your garden! Have a blessed day!
I am going to try the camero tomato. I got the seeds from Florida and is resistant to leaf curl and good for hot climates like mine here in southeast Texas
I had to scale back the varieties of tomatoes this year because my goal is reliable production. I didn’t get that last year so this year it’s my goal to grow a lot more. I think I got maybe 8 cups of diced tomatoes and that was enough for a small batch of canned chili. They also struggled with BER and died off early due to heat. One type never even produced one tomato. I won’t be replanting that kind. Instead I will plant reliable, heat resistant tomatoes and lots of cherry tomatoes because those just keep on ticking for me here. I’m also going for paste tomatoes mostly because that is what we eat. I’ll be canning them and we don’t eat many fresh except the cherry tomatoes. I tried the roadster, Carmello and a few others as well as San Marzano and was disappointed with all of them. So Roma, Amish paste, federle, Homestead and Floridade are the ones I picked this year. They’re already planted and in my greenhouse with heat mats. I’m excited to see what grows! I’ll be transplanting them into 10 and 20 gallon grow bags as those seem to do well for me. I was able to keep a hybrid husky cherry tomato plant alive and producing in the greenhouse over this winter so far though the freeze hit it hard, I was able to get a harvest beforehand and that was awesome! Hopefully it will survive and I can keep getting those tomatoes. They’re reliable and this plant was a sucker from earlier this years plant which died off with the heat. This one made it. Wish me luck!
Thanks so much Greg for giving us such a great schooling on tomatoes. I love to buy my seeds and to listen to y’all because I’m in the south (AL) also. What would be your best recommendation for a high acid, high yield, disease resistant tomato. 😂😂😂😂 I don’t ask for much do I? lol Also, have you ever tried growing jet star tomatoes. I’ve grown them the last two years and they produce so many tomatoes and no disease problems. I’m so eager to start my seeds but know it’s a little too soon. Hope to see y’all at Petals in the spring.
When your plants start getting alot of disease you should have a 2nd wave to plant. It sucks pulling plants that are producing still but its for the best. ( indeterminate tomatoes 🍅 is what im talking about)
We generally plant 6-8 varieties of canning tomatoes. We have had great luck with the Roma tomatoes as we start harvesting in mid July until mid October!
I to got stuck on one variety of tomatoes. I’ve been trying at least one maybe two varieties. It’s one of the simple joys of gardening. Been playing with cantaloupe and watermelon. I see why you have a pile under the shade tree. Good videos. Much appreciated
I just pulled up my Fall Tomatoes and they had Nematodes ( Mountain Merit, Celebrity Plus, Fla91 ,Hossinator,Red Snapper)The only ones that didn't have them was Bella Rosa and Sunset Torch for some reason. I'm pulling my paste tomatoes tomorrow (Tachi ,Shelby)hopefully they won't have any. Also I think the Hossinator is the same as Mountain Merit I can't tell them apart.
I have a question about tomato growing. I live in the upstate of South Carolina in Greenville county. Our Summer heat and humidity always cause us issues by July. I think it is blight maybe? We trim the lower leaves and use mulch (mainly fall collected leaves and tree trimmings we have ran thru our wood chipper) and we only water from the bottom but it is inevitable that we have issues. We tried more disease resistant varieties last year and had better success but I love the older heirlooms and would still prefer to grow many of those. So my question is, should we start seeds in early July knowing we will have these issues and be ready to set out new plants by the end of the month and it be the same variety or should they be different types? Also, when we pull those tomato plants out would we be better served to rotate to a new crop and plant the new tomato plants somewhere else? (Not behind another nightshade member) Suggestions for us?
Pro tip Brad's atomic grape another one he got right. Definitely worth trying. It was out of the park .Greg Borough from Farm on 7th all our customers had the same opinion.
Thanks so much for the video, very helpful information. Of course i have already ordered my tomatoes lol. Hossinator, celebrity plus and Cherokee purple.
Trying to whittle down our list to 15-16 tomato varieties to plant this year. Some definite positive standbys as well as going to try a few new ones as well!
Oh, and also I wanted to ask if you might be able to help MIgardener with some tips on growing big Watermelons, big Pumpkins 50 -100 pounds, Cauliflower, and Jicama. He did a video today about having difficulty with those and you seem to be really good with exacting formulas for things.
Hey! We grow tomatoes here in the south west too! Didn’t hear one recommendation. We battle early cool weather and hot mid season weather. Our tomatoes don’t start performing until mid August. If our frosts are late, we have a good season. Frosts are from early October to mid November. November 19 this year.
Hey hoss, I have a question, I'm wanting to try all your determinant beef steak varieties, I was thinking of stagger planting here in zone 6a, our tomato season is may1 to frost late October early November, hossinator , bellarosa, red snapper, what is your opinion on Dixie Red?.
Did hoss ever get both sides of there furrow attachment????? I still only have the left side! That got old fast!!!!! Michigander here semper fidelis to my brothers

it is, This tomato is everything you loved about the original Celebrity, plus an enhanced disease package! Celebrity Plus Tomato is a hybrid, determinate variety that produces loads of medium to large fruits in clusters. Disease and crack-resistant
I just picked some hossinator tomatoes I started in September. Took forever to grow with the cooler weather and a pain to have to cover them during these last few cold spells. But I had dozens of almost softball size tomatoes.
Two favorites, Red Snapper and Tachi. They are hard to beat.

Curse you, Hoss, for adding to my tomato list. 😂 I have already sown my seeds and now I need to order more.
Sorry!
Purple Boy is my favorite!

Lemon boy is my all time favorite. So I’ll have to try The plus variety, thanks for the reminder.
You should definitely try it, Sarah! You won't be disappointed!
Wow I will definitely be looking at those plus varieties, especially Big Beef. Thanks for the updates.
Any time!
I think I was happier last year with their Red Snapper than the Hossinator.
Would you please do a video about top tomato varieties for salsas, hamburger or sandwiches, pasta sauce etc.. . Thanks I am fixing to place an order.
Great idea!

Have you considered carrying a yellow determinant like Carolina Gold?
I love the Shelby. It's a great producer here in Ohio.
So good!

Red snapper or hossinator
I like the Amish paste
They taste like the old tomatoes use to taste
They are. Heirloom Roma type tomato .. try them

I Think you should change your growing season. Plant early spring, harvest in June. The heat in July will cause damage with any variety. Greg
Pro tip Brad's atomic grape another one he got right. Definitely worth trying. It was out of the park .Greg Borough from Farm on 7th all our customers had the same opinion.
I am planting Red Snapper they done great here in Southern Indiana. I all ready have my seed.
Sounds great!

Good hot set tomato, a bit smaller
Jet setter is the best sweetest tasting tomatoes.
Have yall tried "everglades " tomatoes? Or is it just hype?
No, we have not tried those.

Red Snapper or Hossinator is our favorite.
I’m just looking for old school taste like big boys. These new sweet verities don’t seem as good
I wanted to try a pack of hossinator tomatoes but 1 pack of 10 seeds plus shipping cost was 10 dollars 😢 Don’t guess I’ll get to try them
.
I’m worried too about the shipping to Alaska for a very light package of seeds....an envelope with a $.60 stamp would get it to me.
our seeds are packed in a heavy envelope that is padded. We have not have any issues shipping to Alaska.
I like the Amish paste
They taste like the old tomatoes used to taste
How do you prune indeterminates? Video?
Couldn't find your reply on how to prune indeterminates
Hoss I thought Celebrity Plus was a determinate variety?
it is,
This tomato is everything you loved about the original Celebrity, plus an enhanced disease package! Celebrity Plus Tomato is a hybrid, determinate variety that produces loads of medium to large fruits in clusters. Disease and crack-resistant
Ok. You referred to it as an indeterminate by mistake. I was planning on trying them this year; but not if it’s an indeterminate.
yes, our mistake.
No worries. I’ve been trusting your tools and garden expertise for years. You’ve never steered me wrong yet.
Let you an email last week regarding Elephant Garlic. Still no response.
What is your question? I'll make sure he gets it. We have been our of town for a business conference.
👍
I'm ready for the season. Can you get the camera man to STOP MOVING,
