  • A quick comparison to put the last video's 1.30 lap into some context. The Exige V6 Cup is a very fast track car so hopefully this will help more people appreciate how fast 1.30 is around Brands Hatch GP.
I have no doubt that the Exige V6 Cup could go faster than 1.44. I'd like to think I could knock another 2 secs off that with a clear lap on fresh tyres. Maybe more on slicks. But I believe I can go faster in the Caterham too. For this comparison I used my own 1.32 lap rather than the pro driver's 1.30. Early part of the lap was compromised by traffic as you can see.
Apologies for poor quality with the Exige lap footage. No idea why it freezes at the end either but after 3 attempts at uploading the whole video, this will have to do! Timed lap starts after the freeze frame so you can see how much of the headstart the Exige needed!

The car is quick, no doubt about that, but comparing it to a road car on road tyres is pretty pointless. Especially a road car that weighs twice as much with less BHP, i.e. under half the PTW ratio.
    To add some balance -
Given that a standard 420r laps in 1.35 without slicks (got to be 1-2 secs) and Clucas (very handy indeed) you would expect that a car with more than twice the BHP & full slicks would be a bit further down the road than that...

There is no evidence on UA-cam of a 420R lapping in 1.35. Please feel free to post a link. Anything under 1.38 is very quick for a 420R. The fastest 420R lap on YT by a pro driver is 1.37. But even if it was 'only' 5 secs a lap quicker it's lapping a pro driver in a 420R in less than 20 laps.

The purpose of comparing it to a quick road car was to give it some perspective. If you race Caterhams you'll know what the lap time means, if you don't it's just a number. As it happens we ran the car on slicks vs latest Avon ZZR and there was very little in it. Road tyres have come on a long way in recent years! I think to be fair what you're missing is that we are just getting started with the Super CSR. 420Rs have been raced for years by top teams and pro drivers, the car is developed to within an inch of its life. When I first bought this supercharged car it was slower than my K-Series S3 at most tracks. We haven't added a single bhp but we are getting faster all the time. Watch this space because I'm sure Ben can go under 1.30 at Brands GP, his lap was his first go in the car on decent tyres. No set-up work nothing. Still the fastest recorded time in a 7 ever so that'll do me for now.

@@DrPittenstein I just don't see why you are comparing it to other Caterhams when it is effectively a 720R, with more than twice the power of anything else, of course it's going to be faster, but how can racing something with such a huge advantage be satisfying? Re 420r - Pretty sure there are NOT any pro drivers racing them on a regular basis. I'm not knocking your car, it looks epic and is clearly very quick - If you look at the deltas between 270, 310 & 420, given the modest differences, I just thought it would be far quicker in comparison.

@@cashmax 420R is the race benchmark plus if you search laptimes on YT those are the faster ones. All the fastest times are set by pro drivers. The car has around 10bhp more at the wheels than the other group G Mag Sevens so racing is very competitive plus MSV All Comers allows Radicals so we need every bhp we can get. Rich Webb’s turbo Hyabusa car was definitely more powerful and set the Caterham lap record at Donington. I bought a supercharged CSR and have been working hard at great expense to get it to work. Has sometimes seemed like a waste of time and money but when we take a step forward it’s very rewarding. Figured Boss Racing deserved some credit for what they’ve achieved. They’re trying to get by at a difficult time like everyone else.

Noticed your running a fairly narrow front / rear tyre, any plans to widen them ?

It goes very well on 245 rears, 185 fronts Avon ZZR 'extreme' compound. Would have been running narrower rears but slicks in this video. Front end is unreal on 185s it simply refuses to understeer, so no benefit from to going wider fronts. Extreme ZZRs close to slicks at their peak, probably around a second off at Brands GP. Regular compound ZZRs are around 2 secs slower than extremes at most tracks.

Interesting, got a 620 which needs sharpened up for next season. Have you any thoughts on fitting a hand clutch? Pedal box is too narrow for a decent left foot pedal set up.

@@mickeymouse7741 no haven’t heard of one being fitted to a Seven, I get on fine with 3 pedals only really use the clutch to launch and for very slow speed manoeuvres.

Are boss racing the rec. guys for map, paddles, set up etc ? Cheers

@@mickeymouse7741 yes they’ve done a few with Sadev box and Geartronics paddles. Great set up for track but very noisy for road use as it’s a pukka compressed air set up.
