thanks for posting, and particularly for including one of his fabulous "one-nil"s. No commentator has ever been as good or as thrilling as David Coleman.
Simply the best commentator ever commentating on the best 1500 metre race of all time. No-one in history would have beaten Coe off that pace with his kick with 100 to go. Even the great Ovett couldn't live with him and they were both fit on that day!!!
the greatest commentator ever [ i cried when he died [ he could make the phone directory sound exciting [ plus he knew what he was talking about [ gabby steve take note [ your not in the same class[ thanks for the long hours of enjoyment david
Without a shadow of a doubt, David Coleman was head and shoulders above any other commentator in my lifetime, and I can go right back to the late 1950s. As far as I am concerned, David had no peers, he was simply the finest of them all.
A great multi sports commentator but, as an amateur athlete I think his knowledge & skills came to the fore with track and field. Thank You David for the Great memories
He was a great multi sports commentator but for me his Athletics commentary is just a bit behind Ron Pickering…but then Athletics was Ron’s whole life! Daley even lived in his house! 😃
Coleman and Pickering calling a track race could do it better than anybody...way back then and even now! Best American commentator on track was Dick Bank...a close second to the two Brits...in my opinion!
I always thought his commentary was the most appreciative of the brilliance of George Best - he was also wonderful during Lillian Board's races, both her defeat in Mexico 68 and her amazing win in 69 over Collette Besson. David made a magnificent contribution to the enjoyment of sport in the UK.
The greatest commentator ever. His commentary of the Ladies 400m relay from the Euro Champs of 1969 matched the race where Lillian Board did the seemingly impossible in beating Olympic Champion Besson .
@@keithbate9405 Yes- it's here on UA-cam and I find myself getting teary whenever I watch it, largely because of Lillian's amazing performance and knowing what happened to her the following year, but also very much because of David's wonderfully emotional commentary. PS I wish someone would do a documentary on Lillian, to tell new generations about our Golden Girl. Pep[;e would be amazed to see how magical she was, both as an athlete and a person, with her lovely self-deprecating humour.
@@ysgol3 Lillian already had the cancer that was to take her life by those championships. That is why she ran the 800m rather than her favourite 400m. Yes it is amazing to me also that the younger generations are largely unaware of her.
@@keithbate9405 Hi again, I'm not sure that she had it in 1969, of course it may have already have been in her by then. As you'll know she was unwell with no diagnosis for most of 1970, missing the Edinburgh Commonwealth Games as a result, until that devastating diagnosis and her (controversial to say the least) treatment in that German clinic. I understand though that this was a last desperate resort after she was given a terminal diagnosis in England. So so sad, I remember the news of her death on Boxing day 1970 so well, I was only 10 and was very very upset about it.
@@ysgol3 I read at the time of Lillian's death that she had been experiencing some issues in 1969 that affected her training for the Euro's in 1969. She could not do the training she needed for her favourite 400m. That is why she ran the 800m. A longer distance true but not at the same pace as a 400m. This is why she started to have medical tests and later Cancer was identified in her body. But it had been present for some time. Hence it was too late for medical treatment that may have saved her life.
The tone of David Coleman Voice is legendary in the Ann Packer race. My favourite has to be when Chelsea play Arsenal and Peter Osgood scores and he says “you don’t blame goalkeepers, you congratulate the scorer” absolute Class.
Thanks for this contribution, important that David's voice is still heard. Where's his commentary of those iconic Ali fights, or of the Munich Olympics, where his qualities as a journalist were very much in evidence? If anyone knows, I'd appreciate a post.
Nice tribute! In answer to the question below, I don't think he ever commentated on boxing (it was usually Harry Carpenter for the BBC) although he did interview Ali on Sportsnight once.
What a brilliant array of sports commentators the BBC had in those days, Coleman, Pickering, Carpenter, Morgan, Wolstenholme, McClaren, Vine ,Brooks -Ward, O Sullevan, Walker, Davies,Motson, Arlott ,West,Benaud,Maskell, Longhurst, Alliss, they were the very best.

Never forget his comment during the 800m "Steve Ovett in fourth place, those blue eyes like chips of ice!"
A legend. No-one could conjure emotion like david Coleman.
Just watched again in 2023 and Ann Packer just gave me the same goosebumps as when I was 7 in 1964

the voice was superbly modulated, the sense of drama and theatre in every statement, the gold standard for the rest of us to follow

Nobody compares
"Ovett.... eyes like blue chips of ice".....
Fabulous Ann packer ❤️
Very true.....
That 10,000 metres was unbelievable the crowd , throwing cushions on the track , going berserk.

Interesting list of participants in the Moscow 1980 1500m - East Germany, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia ... all gone - Great Britain remains ...?!
Perhaps only nominatively ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The Best. 👍🏅🏃🏻
Legend
Brilliant the best ever
Superb commentator. Only Richie Benaud in any sport I rate better
With muscles like that she ain't no 'girl'!
It did seem ovett happy to be 1st but looked beaten into 3rd because he couldn't beat coe instead of fighting for 2nd.
Or hed been out on the raz celebrating the 800 win....even
Ovett said he had lost his edge after winning his gold in the 800m and just wanted to go home.
