I cant help but shed a tear every time I see this video. The music is very fitting- it sounds happy but simultaneously has a very faint sadness to it. Beautiful. I've found this video multiple times as I've been researching Glen Canyon to write about for school papers. I'm 25 years old and I have lived here by the Glen Canyon Dam all my life, but it wasn't until just a few years ago that I actually became interested in learning my local history. I think that since I grew up here, I was just kind of conditioned to the presence of the lake and didnt think to question it. Its been such a wonderful experience to learn about Glen Canyon. This video contains such rare footage. There are only a handful of people who captured this much quality footage of the place. Thank you so much for sharing!
My dad would appreciate your compliment. The trick now is getting the 20-30' of sand out of Cathedral. Water levels below 3570 just make a longer and longer beach. Everyone who goes there should take a bucket of sand from cathedral and dump it in the main channel.
@@concorde2003don’t worry as the water level of the god forsaken reservoir keeps dropping, Mother Nature will do her thing and all that sand will wash down the canyon as it’s done for millions of years. The power of water and wind is amazing and can erase the damage done by people.
Reminds me of hiking in the bottom of the Grand Canyon. It was so beautiful ! Can’t imagine if they damned up the Grand Canyon and the Colorado river thru there became a lake. That would be awful !
Beautiful! The transfer to digital looks great, even at 480p. Love the fade to black at 1:09 - looks like it had been done in-camera. Great treasure in gorgeous Kodachrome!
Hello! I'm a ranger at GCNRA and was wondering if I could use clips of this for a presentation on river running in the Glen Canyon, both pre and post dam. It's amazing that this clip has so much information behind it, as well as being run by Ken Slight, ol' Seldom Seen himself. Please let me know.
Hello dtoeppen, a very nice video from your father! Tip: You can edit your video with new music on UA-cam, YT offers free music. Find a suitable piece of music in the length of your video, which also fits musically. It can be copied over without any problems, the old music is deleted in the process. It would be a shame if this historical video could no longer be seen here! Kind regards, MrRheingold

Impressive footage. As of 2021 we're not far from reliving those days again soon.

I understand now it’s out of the water.
That's right!

That song is by OMD or Orchestral Manuevers in the Dark, a new wave band from the 80's. 👍
Man… I’ve been trying to find this exact video for years. I had seen it back in 2016.
Beautiful! I wish there was more footage 😪
Thank you so much for posting this video footage. How gorgeous and sad to see it before the dam.
Good transfer of 8MM to digital. I've been to CID twice at low reservoir water levels. The 1st time in 2014 and again last year 2019.
the canyon will return
Nice footage! fun to see. thanks for posting!
This place had all reasons to be a national park

Thanks for sharing. I read that some of this is exposed again because of the drought so I was curious about this.

What a beautiful place. Did you ever get any word about what the issue was with this video from YT?
Thanks for sharing. Your Dad was a pretty good camera man!

Vimeo is a much better more professional site for sure. BTW good to see old Bolex footage - got lots.
one of the most beautiful places on earth. wish they would take down the dam
hell of a thing to drown one of the most beautiful and unique places on earth. and in the name of what...progress?
#syphilization
Really enjoyed reading Desert Solitaire recently...great book. I have to see what Abbey was writing about.
I'm aware of this history. VERY interesting to see what natural beauty was lost as a result.
The extreme loss of west canyon.... glad its here. Wish I could go back to here. I want to walk thru it with the dripping spring wall... what a loss
Nice look at a wilderness that will never be enjoyed again.
Drain the lake!
beautiful. sad how an entire ecosystem got destroyed by greed at the highest level.
Monstrosity.
