- When I first learned of this place, I became obsessed. It is the most mysterious and impossible to reach place in the American West.
So, I set out backpacking to learn more about the people and things who once lived here.
What I found, might change the way you think about American History.
Make sure to subscribe for the following episodes, and a deeper dive into this incredible place.

Google Earth 🤝 amazing discoveries
Indeed. Thanks Googs 😘
Hii Google really like you, and man the channel of this guy is really incredible one day i wish to visit this places too
It feels surreal to have one person posting comments posing as Google.
stop spying people please
Google can you fix the ad blocking on youtube? if someone chooses to block an advertisement, it doesn't get blocked. Thank you
Criminally underrated channel. Keep up the great work! :)
Isn't it though? It's like our little secret and we were here when it was born. I hope we get to watch him for decades.
Not by me! Nolan is an artist and his excursions are genuine, experiential, works of art.
I prefer smaller channels myself. They're charming and more intimate, like this one.
Doesn't that look like the framing of a big house with a black roof on it. Start looking center far right (TS)0:36.
@@Cantmuskittotally agree with you. I like the term underviewed better...but you're right, who cares?
almost gave me a heart attack falling off that ledge😭
Mission accomplished
i got the tummy feeling when your in rollercoaster 😅😅. i did not expect him to just jump
This channel is a hidden gem . I love adventures and nature and this is such a great channel for me
I'm right there with you I love this kid!
Same
That must be one happy dog going on all these adventures.
Also I love watching this channel grow, it deserves it.
You're very fortunate to have such a great dog as a companion on your explorations. Love your content! ❤
I agree. Couldnt do it without Toohey
@the_pov_channel I worry about your Dog falling. I traveled that area in early 70's, wish I had the drone back then.
That's his Samwise Gamgee 🤣
It would be nice if you showed some affection to your loyal companion once in a while...
This and desert drifter has been two of my most watched channels, I just love the beautiful nature
Trek Planner is decent. Not as dramatic but still kinda cool
I camped Lake Powell in the 70's and the side canyons were phenomenal then. One of the most beautiful places I've ever been as well. Nature has a way of revealing its truth to those who ask and I'm very much looking forward to see what it shows you. You channel is amazing.
One of my favorite channels, always interesting and beautiful places. Some I've seen and many are new, all are so good to see
I'm always amazed at how fearless your dog is. I always wonder what puppy thinks of your adventures.
Puppy loves that!
Too close to the edge for my comfort
He loves them more than I do.

Me too..
I know I’m holding my breathe every time he films looking over the edge or when his loyal companion is right up against the edge also.
😬😬😬
I think it’s my fears for heights.
Love the channel too.
@@thegallantsaint2034 Bingo, I'm sure I'll never see a horrible plunge yet I'm still anxious about it. It actually distracts me when the pooch is looking back at the drone with a 1000 drop a couple feet away.
I know a Navajo family whos land is under lake Foul...they never recovered from the loss of grazing land for their livestock.
The amount of times I tense up and tell you to be careful next to those ledges rivals the amount of times I tell my students to be quiet.
Oh I know! In the first few minutes I thought he had taken his deathfall into the river. But it was just business as usual.
Definitely precarious.

Wow! I have no words for this existential experience you've shared with us🙏. Thank you and your pup whose calming presence is just as beautiful as the views!🫶
One of my most treasured possessions is a book from 1963 “the place no one knew” by Eliot Porter and published by the sierra club. Library of Congress catalogue number- 66-15340. It won the Carey-Thomas award in 1964. The photos are amazing . I hope you can find a copy somewhere even to just look at the photos. We have heard rumors here in AZ that possibly Glen Canyon dam would be removed . As it should be. Thanks for sharing your adventures
Thank you for sharing this, I'm going to find it. Onward...

also on the internet archive!
Amazon has a used copy right now…
I found a copy after seeing it mentioned here so many times. It wasnt cheap but I ordered it. quite excited about it. Thank you for the suggestion

This content is insanely well crafted and offered with such a profound dedication and love to the subject, it takes my breath away
Omg! My tummy was queezy with you so close to the edge. Its mind boggling how people traveled and lived there. 😢 sad that it was hidden. What an explorer you are. Thank you for sharing your adventures ❤ from Grandma in Peru 🇵🇪
Hello Peruvian grandma! Beautiful country you live in. I agree. Thanks for watching
Wonderful drone footage in that amazing landscape. Can't believe where you camped overnight....talk about on the edge...lol...thanks for another great video 🐕
Definitely one of the coolest spots I have camped
I feel the same as you about glen canyon ❤ thank you for making such an awesome video. One of the best channels on you tube currently!
Can't thank you enough for your references and insight to these beautiful canyons from long ago, people's now long gone, we can only imagine their lives,
Love that you have your dog with you too. Scotland 🏴 UK

Curious about the temperature. Really enjoy your quiet and peaceful drone footage. Thanks for pointing out about dams.
It gets really really hot then really really cold 👍
This is my new favorite UA-cam channel! The geology, the history, phenomenal camera shots, the detailed exploration, the brave pup, the interesting narration and editing. Love it! ❤🤌
Cheers and thank you!
i grew up in the everglades and now live in the midwest- i have never seen landscapes like this in person before. your channel makes me want to do a southwest national park tour!
Highly recommend the national parks out here. Theres too many to see and all are beautiful in their own way.
For a renewal power source, people forget just how destructive hydroelectricity is. You need huge reservoirs which flood valleys and canyons, displace both humans and animals, interrupt the natural flow of the river for aquatic animals, sometimes even depriving large sections of the lower river of water. The Colorado River (as I understand it) barely makes it to the sea anymore. In Australia, the Snowy Hydro scheme & other dams has decreased the flow of the Murray, Murrumbidgee and Snowy Rivers anywhere from 40-80% (depending on how much rain there has been).
Water is a great way to hide things, at the same time providing water to where it's needed. It has been said, just the Grand canyon alone can paint a different kind of history to what we were taught in school if people were allowed to explore it.
It has been said only by people who don't know any better. The dam wasn't built to hide history but to store water.
Just go explore it then it’s free
Wow, phenomenal filming on this video. Thank you for taking us all along with you. ❤
Your youtube channel is my greatest internet discovery

Bruce Berger has a great book called "There Was A River", mostly a compilation. He rafted down it in '62, and ended up stumbling onto the set of "The Greatest Story Ever Told". Turns out the River Jordan scene was filmed on the Colorado! On page 38, he tells a friend's (named Remo) story of going down the river and being able to float into a feature called "Music Temple". They reached a cleft that was 75 feet above water when Berger explored the temple in '62. When Remo explored it, the cleft was reachable by water. He and his group found a ledge barely protected by an overhang, full of artifacts from the Basketmaker III culture. A year later, the cleft was 10 feet underwater.
The whole section about Glen Canyon is ~60 pages and fascinating. Check it out sometime!
Excellent... well done, as a narrator, history, visual, the journey, documentation... DON'T STOP... 👍
Fantastic video, thank you. I used to go there, boating, as a kid. It was stunning then, I cannot begin to imagine the history that has been lost, and the history yet to be found. It's important, what you are doing, documenting what is there today.
So incredibly dramatic/almost unbelievable shapes and colors and textures. I hope you will be exploring on foot down in the Glen as it emerges - and take us along with you. Best wishes and luck to you and dog!
Wow, thanks for sharing. Eternally grateful ❤
last century, governments across the globe built dams to flood ancient ruins. like three gorges dam and the aswan dam.
this behavior sickens me
@@velvetvideo
Yes, it sickens me too!!!
Hi, can you give me all the examples that you know? Thanks.
Another one is Hetch Hetchy Reservoir, supposed to have flooded an area equivalent to Yosemite Valley

@@chriswhite2151 Thank you but he said "governments across the globe built dams to flood ancient ruins". Do you have any example outside the US?

So glad to hear that. Nature and exercise has helped me with that more than anything in my life. Get out there and stay safe

Heartbreaking the destruction of a natural Eden, there will have been relict species in there that may never be seen again. Thankyou for sharing this and making people aware how our actions impact the planet.
Lots and lots of endemic species
Gorgeous work, beautiful place - I had no idea~ Thanks for taking us along
Glad I could share something with you
Beautiful scenery. I watched a documentary, probably on YT, that had clips of old footage of the canyon before it was flooded. It was incredibly beautiful. So sad it’s hidden but nice it’s re-emerging. But that will be at the expense of people in the west who need the water.
Btw, I wondered if your tent was anchored in a way not visible? I’ll bet the winds up there can be fierce at times…
Absolutely beautiful. I used to live in that region. There's so much to explore and see there, you couldn't see it all in 100 lifetimes. Thanks, Nolan.
I’d recommend going on a boat ride to the Rainbow Bridge Arch. It’s quite an experience. You’ll see dinosaur tracks there!
Duuuuude this is epic. I didn't know there was all this history under the lake! Why would they do this? I looked it up and the project was approved in April 1956. Why was this such a priority then? They clearly knew they would be flooding history away, and then did just that. Also I am seeing the original purpose of the lake, to "control flooding" is now obsolete. So it can be drained yet there is strong opposition to that, for now. I like how you ended the video, it's true! One day these canyons will be revealed again
It seems to have been intentional to flood ancient ruins 😞
Energy + water storage was the main goal on paper. It is the 2nd largest reservoir in the US in a very resource constrained area. Thats all they cared about back then . However, it has dramatically backfired on the water front. Due to the huge surface area, we lose an insane amount of water to evaporation here every year. It's a large part of why the Colorado has diminished. Yep it'll come back. Question is- how soon
Wow that's wild. Looking it up, the reservoir was at its highest in 1983 and is now 185 feet down from that highest fill. I didn't know that much had already evaporated! That's 40 years to evaporate 185 feet. Not sure how deep it is now but I'd estimate another 20+ years to evaporate the vast majority... I see another article saying on June 13 this year, 40,000 acre-feet of water leaked out of the reservoir 🤔
@coolbaj, many lakes that were man-made in the West had this happen. Because native people lived along creeks and when the creeks were dammed, so much was washed underneath. We find Native pottery sherds around all our lakes here in Arizona, and wonder how much is under the water.
I’m a 67 year old grandma. I hope future generations of Americans will continue efforts to restore Glen Canyon and Hetch Hetchy valley in Yosemite to their rightful glory. Wish I could have seen this happen in my lifetime.
The old photos of the pre-damn canyons: those places are emanating a power I have not felt in a VERY long time. I will need to meditate upon those frames further. You, sir, are a gift. Thank you for this beautiful video.
Yep. More pics to be found online that are fascinating

I read Abbeys books as a teenager, made me feel like I was there. I highly recommend Desert Solitaire! If I recall he said Powell would have been furious about that "damned lake" being named after him!

Tes reportages ont ce nouveau point de vue que le regard commun ignorait et tu vas exactement où il faut . Merci de partager ces moments et je pense que Dewey vis dans une autre dimension que ses semblables 🎬 🤩👌
My father was doing the electrical work before this dam was finished and he came home telling of the civilization that was once there, He said the ruins there showed of a prior civilization that
left behind a lot of old relics. He felt bad that it was being covered up and not recognized by those in charge, since then I’ve found that most dams and golf courses cover prior civilizations not recorded, our true history is hidden and not in our texts books.
You have an amazing eye and incredible editing skills. If Hollywood hadn't already gone to s***, I'd suggest you could be the next great cinematographer there. Keep up the great work. Love the dog.
You walk too close to the edge, but what is life without a little risk. Your life flashed before all of our eyes as you jumped in tot he water!! 😱 I think given the water is gradually receding, and water has a way of preserving things, there is a chance some of the historic ruins and artifacts may be still intact. Probably important to document as much as possible as the waters peel back, as the exposure will have them decay quite rapidly. Can't wait to see more.
This is AWESOME! You find the coolest places.
You and Desert Drifter are my favourite US Southwest exploration channels. Thanks for taking us to places we can only dream of actually visiting. Love the video!

I grew up in that area from 1957-67 during the years Glen Canyon Dam was being built. We drove often to see the progress of the dam and my dad loved fishing/camping at Lee's Ferry. They wouldn't build it today & cover those sacred historic sites. We hear talk at times of taking down the dam but don't know if it'll ever happen.
My parents were river runners on the Colorado before the Glen Canyon Dam. They obviously felt that Lake Powell was a mistake and would talk about the wonderful formations that were submerged. However it didn't damper there love for southern Utah and they passed that on to me. It's by far my favorite place on earth.
Thank you Nolan... Awesome videography and story as usual. But this time, beyond the heebie-jeebies, you nearly succeeded in giving me a heart attack! 😱

This is freaking sick. I cannot believe how vast it is and how deep these canyons are. That overhead shot really shows off the geology its amazing.
I appreciate our modern electric world but hopefully as new energy production is established some damns can be removed and their original state restored
Beautiful spot but i get dizzy watching your drone footage .love your work
Phenomenal! And there are likely Native Americans who know history and have been in that region prior to the dam. One account I have seen online covers incredible treachery at that time, having to do with the dam. What was promised was not given. You’re an extreme explorer fit for one of the biggest challenges ahead. Daunting! But not for Tooie (spelling for your dog), and for you!. Undaunted.
Absolutely there are. YT channel "Navajo Traditional teachings" has a very telling story on how the water rights were "negotiated" with the ample amount of Navajo that lived in Glen Canon . and yeah it was lived in for many many years
@@the_pov_channel yes, that is the one I saw. I wouldn’t be surprised if Wally and others begin contacting you. They may have some insights to share.
Superbly researched and crafted narrative !!!
The Escalante River was always my favorite at Lake Powell. It would take you weeks to follow it all the way to the town of Escalante. These days, the water only goes up 1/2 mile before the river dries up. The river used to actually flow into the lake. It it extremely remote and almost impossible to traverse.
So fascinating. Thank you for sharing your adventures and your knowledge. ❤
Wow, I never knew all that about Glenn Canyon. Thanks for taking us on this journey.Such beautiful scenery, history.
Across a couple of years, I've seen a few of your videos. The Sky Island video lead me to here, which is when I subscribed. How you were able to capture a small piece of Glen Canyon just floored me.
You should be glad to know that others feel very similarly, about restoring Glen Canyon to its original state. The western drought has obviously lowered the water levels for both Lake Powell and Lake Mead. It's very unlikely that either reservoir will ever be close to full again. So over the next couple of decades the Bureau of Reclamation has very hard decisions to make, to sacrifice one to save the other, not just for water but electricity generation too.
If Lake Powell reaches dead pool levels for several years consecutively, political pressure will built to simply demolish the Glen Canyon Dam to save Lake Mead.
Sometimes the government doesn’t give a damn (no pun intended) about nature, especially back then.
That canyon and surrounding wilderness is spectacular.
Such beauty! Thanks for the beautiful drone footage & the history of this area. Amazing channel. ❤ your channel & your best friend who hikes & explores with you most of the time. ❤ 🐕🐕🦺👍

I live in Colorado and around 1979 I was in high school I saw a black and white reel to reel film in geology class that showed what Glen Canyon was like before it was filled. That video exists somewhere. It was amazing and broke my heart. It is one of the most memorable things I’ve ever seen.
Yeah... I remember when I put down the chapter in "Desert solitaire" by Ed Abbey. Its strange feeling such profound loss for something you never knew and isn't a living person. But, It was a living place.

@@the_pov_channel There's a word for this "Hiraeth" It's not really translatable.....but it's a homesickness, or mournful longing for a place or home that is gone, no longer exists, existed only in antiquity, or perhaps never at all. A pull or mourning, or longing. It's a Welsh word.
