I Discovered a Lost World on Google Earth
Вставка
- Опубліковано 20 чер 2024
- When I first learned of this place, I became obsessed. It is the most mysterious and impossible to reach place in the American West.
So, I set out backpacking to learn more about the people and things who once lived here.
What I found, might change the way you think about American History.
Make sure to subscribe for the following episodes, and a deeper dive into this incredible place.

Google Earth 🤝 amazing discoveries
Indeed. Thanks Googs 😘
Hii Google really like you, and man the channel of this guy is really incredible one day i wish to visit this places too
It feels surreal to have one person posting comments posing as Google.
stop spying people please
Google can you fix the ad blocking on youtube? if someone chooses to block an advertisement, it doesn't get blocked. Thank you
I live in Colorado and around 1979 I was in high school I saw a black and white reel to reel film in geology class that showed what Glen Canyon was like before it was filled. That video exists somewhere. It was amazing and broke my heart. It is one of the most memorable things I’ve ever seen.
Yeah... I remember when I put down the chapter in "Desert solitaire" by Ed Abbey. Its strange feeling such profound loss for something you never knew and isn't a living person. But, It was a living place.
Please keep telling your story! I think you have to be willing to cry a lot to even look at it for what it is. The heartbreak is real.
That is so interesting! Would love to see that film.
@@the_pov_channel i read that book years ago as a kid. Fantastic book. Nobody these days knows about it. You should make a video about it. I haven't seen anyone other than my dad speak about it.
Funny intro and the best camping spot I’ve ever seen.
almost gave me a heart attack falling off that ledge😭
Mission accomplished
i got the tummy feeling when your in rollercoaster 😅😅. i did not expect him to just jump
I camped Lake Powell in the 70's and the side canyons were phenomenal then. One of the most beautiful places I've ever been as well. Nature has a way of revealing its truth to those who ask and I'm very much looking forward to see what it shows you. You channel is amazing.
One of my favorite channels, always interesting and beautiful places. Some I've seen and many are new, all are so good to see
One of my most treasured possessions is a book from 1963 “the place no one knew” by Eliot Porter and published by the sierra club. Library of Congress catalogue number- 66-15340. It won the Carey-Thomas award in 1964. The photos are amazing . I hope you can find a copy somewhere even to just look at the photos. We have heard rumors here in AZ that possibly Glen Canyon dam would be removed . As it should be. Thanks for sharing your adventures
Thank you for sharing this, I'm going to find it. Onward...
so cool
also on the internet archive!
Amazon has a used copy right now…
I found a copy after seeing it mentioned here so many times. It wasnt cheap but I ordered it. quite excited about it. Thank you for the suggestion
Criminally underrated channel. Keep up the great work! :)
Isn't it though? It's like our little secret and we were here when it was born. I hope we get to watch him for decades.
Not by me! Nolan is an artist and his excursions are genuine, experiential, works of art.
I prefer smaller channels myself. They're charming and more intimate, like this one.
Doesn't that look like the framing of a big house with a black roof on it. Start looking center far right (TS)0:36.
@@JohnAtomicstotally agree with you. I like the term underviewed better...but you're right, who cares?
This channel is a hidden gem . I love adventures and nature and this is such a great channel for me
I'm right there with you I love this kid!
Same
I'm always amazed at how fearless your dog is. I always wonder what puppy thinks of your adventures.
Puppy loves that!
Too close to the edge for my comfort
He loves them more than I do.
@@thegallantsaint2034
Me too..
I know I’m holding my breathe every time he films looking over the edge or when his loyal companion is right up against the edge also.
😬😬😬
I think it’s my fears for heights.
Love the channel too.
You're very fortunate to have such a great dog as a companion on your explorations. Love your content! ❤
I agree. Couldnt do it without Toohey
@the_pov_channel I worry about your Dog falling. I traveled that area in early 70's, wish I had the drone back then.
That's his Samwise Gamgee 🤣
The amount of times I tense up and tell you to be careful next to those ledges rivals the amount of times I tell my students to be quiet.
Oh I know! In the first few minutes I thought he had taken his deathfall into the river. But it was just business as usual.
Definitely precarious.
Hahaaa 😆
Your students have a right to speak. You should probably shut up more, you'd learn a thing or two about students. 😇❤
-Yours Truly, that child who was more intelligent than the adult teacher assigned to teach me and not afraid to show you up. 😇❤
@@slyguythreeonetwonine3172 You sound insufferable.
That must be one happy dog going on all these adventures.
Also I love watching this channel grow, it deserves it.
This and desert drifter has been two of my most watched channels, I just love the beautiful nature
Water is a great way to hide things, at the same time providing water to where it's needed. It has been said, just the Grand canyon alone can paint a different kind of history to what we were taught in school if people were allowed to explore it.
It has been said only by people who don't know any better. The dam wasn't built to hide history but to store water.
Just go explore it then it’s free
Wonderful drone footage in that amazing landscape. Can't believe where you camped overnight....talk about on the edge...lol...thanks for another great video 🐕
Definitely one of the coolest spots I have camped
The POV channel has the best format. You hang out in the darndest places you obviously don't have vertigo. Always look forward to seeing you on your channel pops up
Well said
Thanks a ton
Wow! I have no words for this existential experience you've shared with us🙏. Thank you and your pup whose calming presence is just as beautiful as the views!🫶
I feel the same as you about glen canyon ❤ thank you for making such an awesome video. One of the best channels on you tube currently!
Your youtube channel is my greatest internet discovery

Curious about the temperature. Really enjoy your quiet and peaceful drone footage. Thanks for pointing out about dams.
It gets really really hot then really really cold 👍
1:16 my heart stopped for a sec 😂
Mine too! I choked on my dinner.
@@cerberus6654 🤣🤣🤣
I’d recommend going on a boat ride to the Rainbow Bridge Arch. It’s quite an experience. You’ll see dinosaur tracks there!
Omg! My tummy was queezy with you so close to the edge. Its mind boggling how people traveled and lived there. 😢 sad that it was hidden. What an explorer you are. Thank you for sharing your adventures ❤ from Grandma in Peru 🇵🇪
Hello Peruvian grandma! Beautiful country you live in. I agree. Thanks for watching
i grew up in the everglades and now live in the midwest- i have never seen landscapes like this in person before. your channel makes me want to do a southwest national park tour!
Highly recommend the national parks out here. Theres too many to see and all are beautiful in their own way.
Duuuuude this is epic. I didn't know there was all this history under the lake! Why would they do this? I looked it up and the project was approved in April 1956. Why was this such a priority then? They clearly knew they would be flooding history away, and then did just that. Also I am seeing the original purpose of the lake, to "control flooding" is now obsolete. So it can be drained yet there is strong opposition to that, for now. I like how you ended the video, it's true! One day these canyons will be revealed again
It seems to have been intentional to flood ancient ruins 😞
Energy + water storage was the main goal on paper. It is the 2nd largest reservoir in the US in a very resource constrained area. Thats all they cared about back then . However, it has dramatically backfired on the water front. Due to the huge surface area, we lose an insane amount of water to evaporation here every year. It's a large part of why the Colorado has diminished. Yep it'll come back. Question is- how soon
Wow that's wild. Looking it up, the reservoir was at its highest in 1983 and is now 185 feet down from that highest fill. I didn't know that much had already evaporated! That's 40 years to evaporate 185 feet. Not sure how deep it is now but I'd estimate another 20+ years to evaporate the vast majority... I see another article saying on June 13 this year, 40,000 acre-feet of water leaked out of the reservoir 🤔
@coolbaj, many lakes that were man-made in the West had this happen. Because native people lived along creeks and when the creeks were dammed, so much was washed underneath. We find Native pottery sherds around all our lakes here in Arizona, and wonder how much is under the water.
I’m a 67 year old grandma. I hope future generations of Americans will continue efforts to restore Glen Canyon and Hetch Hetchy valley in Yosemite to their rightful glory. Wish I could have seen this happen in my lifetime.
Beautiful scenery. I watched a documentary, probably on YT, that had clips of old footage of the canyon before it was flooded. It was incredibly beautiful. So sad it’s hidden but nice it’s re-emerging. But that will be at the expense of people in the west who need the water.
Btw, I wondered if your tent was anchored in a way not visible? I’ll bet the winds up there can be fierce at times…
Your channel really opened up my interest in rocks and canyons, thanks for bringing me some release from my depression!
So glad to hear that. Nature and exercise has helped me with that more than anything in my life. Get out there and stay safe
This content is insanely well crafted and offered with such a profound dedication and love to the subject, it takes my breath away
So incredibly dramatic/almost unbelievable shapes and colors and textures. I hope you will be exploring on foot down in the Glen as it emerges - and take us along with you. Best wishes and luck to you and dog!
Heartbreaking the destruction of a natural Eden, there will have been relict species in there that may never be seen again. Thankyou for sharing this and making people aware how our actions impact the planet.
Lots and lots of endemic species
I PRAY that you get it completed before this winter ! I suspect that this winter is a changing point not only for our Nation but for the planet. GOD SPEED, our guide and Friend. Blessings, Grace and Peace ....
This is my new favorite UA-cam channel! The geology, the history, phenomenal camera shots, the detailed exploration, the brave pup, the interesting narration and editing. Love it! ❤🤌
Cheers and thank you!
+1 sub... I literally found you when you uploaded this video.. I'm going to binge watch all
Ayyy love to hear it. Thanks fam
Excellent... well done, as a narrator, history, visual, the journey, documentation... DON'T STOP... 👍
You walk too close to the edge, but what is life without a little risk. Your life flashed before all of our eyes as you jumped in tot he water!! 😱 I think given the water is gradually receding, and water has a way of preserving things, there is a chance some of the historic ruins and artifacts may be still intact. Probably important to document as much as possible as the waters peel back, as the exposure will have them decay quite rapidly. Can't wait to see more.
last century, governments across the globe built dams to flood ancient ruins. like three gorges dam and the aswan dam.
this behavior sickens me
@@velvetvideo
Yes, it sickens me too!!!
Hi, can you give me all the examples that you know? Thanks.
Another one is Hetch Hetchy Reservoir, supposed to have flooded an area equivalent to Yosemite Valley
@@Mr_Friendly_B
@@chriswhite2151 Thank you but he said "governments across the globe built dams to flood ancient ruins". Do you have any example outside the US?
I really hope you make this canyon a series. I'm very interested in seeing before & after photos and videos through the progress. I thoroughly enjoy your videos. Keep up the great content, fellow Fisher!
Can't thank you enough for your references and insight to these beautiful canyons from long ago, people's now long gone, we can only imagine their lives,
Love that you have your dog with you too. Scotland 🏴 UK
Thanks 🫡
Man, as per usual, you deliver a video of the highest quality. Man, that dog brightens the video every time he photo bombs the shot. We all could use some more adventure doge in our lives.
I LOVE these amazing videos. Serious question...in all your explorations of these extraordinary places, have you ever seen anything on land, or in the sky, that you couldn't explain?
Always looking. In the sky, yes.
Your work is just as great as National Geographic photography and documentaries. Loved this one. Thank you for sharing.
agreed!
All that water and no lush forests, wildlife etc... strange.
Try to find a copy of a book called" Glen canyon, images of a lost world" by Tad Nichols. He rafted the canyon many times with the great Katie Lee, and Frank Wright. Also find any interviews with Katie Lee.
I have and it is on the way. Cant wait. Thanks for the suggestion
@@the_pov_channelHere’s another one: The Colorado River Through Glen Canyon Before Lake Powell: Historic Photo Journal 1872-1964 (Amazon)
Absolutely beautiful. I used to live in that region. There's so much to explore and see there, you couldn't see it all in 100 lifetimes. Thanks, Nolan.
Wow! Great intro, followed by another captivating video that leaves me wanting to visit the SW so bad
Gorgeous work, beautiful place - I had no idea~ Thanks for taking us along
Glad I could share something with you
I’ve been a huge Edward Abbey fan for years and I am so impressed by your discoveries. Thank you so much! 🐾
Wow, phenomenal filming on this video. Thank you for taking us all along with you. ❤
That was awesome. You scared me to death. Good work! 😅😊
Fantastic video, thank you. I used to go there, boating, as a kid. It was stunning then, I cannot begin to imagine the history that has been lost, and the history yet to be found. It's important, what you are doing, documenting what is there today.
Looking forward to more videos on this beautiful reemerging world. Your dog is the perfect travel companion.
TY so much for being a free spirit and an explorer. TY for bringing us a few glimpses from your wonderful travels. I have learned so much about the flatlands and the canyons of USA through your eyes.
I wish you the best in your adventures!
glad you're out there having fun I'll just sit here AT MY FUCKIGN JOB WITH MY FUCKING MISERABLE LIFE AND I FUCKING HATE EVERYTHING. Keep it up!
Trust me dude, I was there for a long time. Hang in there and keep that passion project alive. And it's not all fun. I now sit at a computer for longer than I used to 😂 But I cant complain.
Outstanding Bro! WOW! I have to say I am also quite impressed with your companion, your Dog. He really is special too. Thanks 4 sharin. This pry is the only way I will get to see this. I love your show. Thanks again Bro.❤❤❤
Thank you, The canyons and mesa tops around the Colorado are by far my favorite place on earth! You covered it wonderfully!
Just found your channel you are an artist and adventurer blew me away this vid im 71 and very active motorcycle adventure rider ive traveled the GLEN canyon and every turn is amazing will go back this year and camp, hike, ride great vid brother. you got a sub!
Fantastic video. Subscribed
I read Abbeys books as a teenager, made me feel like I was there. I highly recommend Desert Solitaire! If I recall he said Powell would have been furious about that "damned lake" being named after him!
yep
Tes reportages ont ce nouveau point de vue que le regard commun ignorait et tu vas exactement où il faut . Merci de partager ces moments et je pense que Dewey vis dans une autre dimension que ses semblables 🎬 🤩👌
The Escalante River was always my favorite at Lake Powell. It would take you weeks to follow it all the way to the town of Escalante. These days, the water only goes up 1/2 mile before the river dries up. The river used to actually flow into the lake. It it extremely remote and almost impossible to traverse.
Thank you SO MUCH for this great production. Every human must see this. I've been there many times, and to many areas surrounding the lake and canyon; but I know I've just barely scratched the surface. With this vid, I feel like I know a whole lot more. I do understand though that there's much more to see and learn about this wondrous place. Thanks again!
Wow, just discovered your channel POV. Fantastic footage. There is most certainly Mystery in that land. And I feel you are going to find it.....
You get my first like and subscribe of the day. Be safe ,watch yourself out there.
Always an awesome adventure with. Thanks for sharing this with us you
I’m so happy to have found your channel. Epic and definitely worth watching every second.❤
Thank you Nolan... Awesome videography and story as usual. But this time, beyond the heebie-jeebies, you nearly succeeded in giving me a heart attack! 😱
This is freaking sick. I cannot believe how vast it is and how deep these canyons are. That overhead shot really shows off the geology its amazing.
I appreciate our modern electric world but hopefully as new energy production is established some damns can be removed and their original state restored
You and Desert Drifter are my favourite US Southwest exploration channels. Thanks for taking us to places we can only dream of actually visiting. Love the video!
I subscribed, you shared to the whole world 🌎 the places we couldn't reach. Thank you so much.

AWESOMENESS in spades!!!!! Mind boggling views, the stuff of dreams. Thanking you for this incredible journey, from an old woman. Love your beautiful obedient dog XOXOXOXO
Can’t wait to see a ‘Drain Lake Powell’ episode!
I grew up in that area from 1957-67 during the years Glen Canyon Dam was being built. We drove often to see the progress of the dam and my dad loved fishing/camping at Lee's Ferry. They wouldn't build it today & cover those sacred historic sites. We hear talk at times of taking down the dam but don't know if it'll ever happen.
Beautiful spot but i get dizzy watching your drone footage .love your work
10:02 That shot of the boat (jetski?) was epic !

"You can't see anything from a car; you've got to get out of the goddamn contraption and walk, better yet crawl, on hands and knees, over the sandstone and through the thornbrush and cactus. When traces of blood begin to mark your trail, you'll see something, maybe." - Ed Abbey
I have always felt the Grand Canyon held more mystery then we are allowed to know. Thank you for exploring for us!
So fascinating. Thank you for sharing your adventures and your knowledge. ❤
1:59 that second jump looked like it was headed for a back smack 😆
Yes, it was . I actually miscalculated how far down the water was because last time I was there, the water was far higher. Hence the flops
I really enjoy your videos. I have a serious ambition to do what you do, and explore that wilderness. Just the idea of stumbling across some ancient place, just to stand there and feel deep time around me. Amazing.
Wow.... thank you for sharing such a beautiful place with me as I will probably never get to see that with my own eyes. Keep up the great work. Love your videos. You just got another subscriber.
Thank you soo much for the hike into E.din
Yes, like the grand, I'm sure there's stuff in Glen they really don't want us to see. Those arches under water looking down on them was from another world. Now that I battle with the Plantar sore heel syndrome, don't think Ronnie's rump will be doing the hike for real. Great job.👌😎
For a renewal power source, people forget just how destructive hydroelectricity is. You need huge reservoirs which flood valleys and canyons, displace both humans and animals, interrupt the natural flow of the river for aquatic animals, sometimes even depriving large sections of the lower river of water. The Colorado River (as I understand it) barely makes it to the sea anymore. In Australia, the Snowy Hydro scheme & other dams has decreased the flow of the Murray, Murrumbidgee and Snowy Rivers anywhere from 40-80% (depending on how much rain there has been).
While I can agree Glen Canyon was beautiful and it is a great loss to have it swamped currently, Boating, especially house boating on Lake Powell is still one of the most amazing experiences in the WORLD. Get upriver from Page to sections like Rock Canyon and Escalante and you are literally cut off from the outside world. No cell phones or internet, less people. The experience is surreal. It must have been almost holy to the ancients. It still is to many. If there is anything to be said for the water, it is that it has made this area accessible to so many more than would go there w/out it. Great work on the video, love the channel. Keep exploring the LP area for us!
Thanks for sharing! You are appreciated! I would have never seen this if not for you!
Phenomenal! And there are likely Native Americans who know history and have been in that region prior to the dam. One account I have seen online covers incredible treachery at that time, having to do with the dam. What was promised was not given. You’re an extreme explorer fit for one of the biggest challenges ahead. Daunting! But not for Tooie (spelling for your dog), and for you!. Undaunted.
Absolutely there are. YT channel "Navajo Traditional teachings" has a very telling story on how the water rights were "negotiated" with the ample amount of Navajo that lived in Glen Canon . and yeah it was lived in for many many years
@@the_pov_channel yes, that is the one I saw. I wouldn’t be surprised if Wally and others begin contacting you. They may have some insights to share.
