Thank you Sam. A timely review. My mother Daphne Pamela , passed away on 1st May, aged 90. Her love of red roses, and such a little lady in stature but as tough as the Pecket. A model I shall save up for, even though I model in N . This is a great video . Super super super. Love the channel. Keep reviewing Peckets . 🙏

    Pecket Mfg Co : "Lining?"
    Daphne : " *yes* "
Cute and beautiful thing, it's a display piece on its own. Very sad to know that the real one exists and is in bad shape :(

    Dear Sam
a suggestion when doing a loco review and you put the loco down on the track to do a test run, well we cannot see what you are doing when you turn the knob, e.g. the loco stops but was it the loco or was it you turning the power off. My suggestion is to have showing on the screen a volts and an amps meter as you do this test so we can see how much each loco draws

If I was still modelling in 00, I'd definitely get me one of these gorgeous babies. I would, though, also try to organize a semi-permanently-coupled 'shunter's truck' situation with extra pickups, like the Sentinel. Since it's an industrial loco, that would be justifiable. The livery colour looks very much like Midland red, and I've always thought that MR livery looks great on any loco. Almost as good as the Armstrong/Dean GWR livery...
Thanks for showing us this lovely little loco.

I can never get enough of the W4 Pecketts. I love pugs in general, and the Pecketts are such high quality little shunters. I really want one, once I either find the money or find a good deal on a used one.
edit: on the subject of reviewing more Pecketts, if you ever wanted to do a really uneconomical video, you could always get all the different liveries you don't have, and review the various liveries. Maybe do it as some sort of a raffle, where people can buy tickets to enter, and then after you review all the various liveries, you raffle off some of them to recoup costs? I know I'd be willing to chuck a little money at a chance of getting a Peckett, and I bet you could get enough raffle entries to break even.

I got Niclausse for cheap from Amazon a couple of months ago, and is gorgeous. Took me long enough, because I wanted Dodo from the first batch but they all sold out too quickly. I'd love a Daphne, but I don't think I can justify such a small thing for such a high price. I do still have 2 spare 4-pin chips requiring locos though...
My Niclausse runs very well, although it was run in on a club layout that hadn't had a track clean in ages, so it needed a wheel clean before it would reliably run slowly. It does cut out a bit on a peco large crossover (insulfrog), but can haul the 9-wagon rake of KR Models' Consett Iron Ore wagons with resin loads plus a brake van with ease (who needs a 9F?)

Hi All. Love the Colour of that little Loco.
Having had an 'Aunt Daphne', I maybe forced to buy one. Why..!?
Amusingly "Aunt Daphne' was Terrified of Flying Birds. ( Yep, Absolutely Wet Knickers and Screaming.)
Once, when allowing my Budgie to Fly free. Daphne walked in..! When the Budgie flew over Daphne, she turned about the Same Colour and Screamed like a Trains whistle..!
So I must have one of these to Remember Daphne..!
Cheers All. Kim in Oz. 😎
Ps. Up to that Point None of my Family knew about Aunt D's. Issue with Birds.
My Budgie was always in his Cage and Covered for future Visits..!

Someone really could break into the market with cheaper, railroad/lima standard locos. I'm old, my eyesight doesn't require high detail product I can't see anymore and I'm tired of being ripped off by the Big Two. I frankly wouldn't care if I was buying breach of copyright/lawsuit knockoffs (think Fender or Gibson guitar replicas) at this point. Ridiculous and totally off-putting to young folk who haven't the expendable income that the target demographics for Hornby and Bachmann have. What happens when the grey legions pass away?

I've just received my Daphne a few days ago from Collett's Models of Exmouth. The owner did it for me including postage for £106.75 so that improves the value for money rating greatly.
I to ordered it early last year based upon its colour. Actually it's colour is described as Tytherington Stone Co purple ! That's as much purple as the ochre colour Terriers were described as Improved Engine Green.
I ordered mine originally for a mate in Canada because they are big into Christmas model village displays over there and his had a loop of track around it. The red colour is perfect for Christmas I thought, but no, he preferred the blue 6-wheel B2. So I ordered both locos cus I liked the red myself.
I also own a pale green W4, and am now eyeing up the blue and red open back cab one named Bear.
How can one resist these cute locos ?
As for the brass coloured plastic, Hornby needs to do themselves a favour by stopping using that coarse metal flake gold paint and use a fine metallic. Alclad II does superb metallic paints for anyone wanting to improve the look of these components.

Yeah I agree with you Sam they are great loco's, However I would give a lower quality score as my own experience hasnt been as good.
Daphne was the second Peckett in a row for me to have one of the pickups not touching the wheels at all from new making them pretty unreliable.
I know its an easy fix but I shouldn't have to fix 2 brand new loco's straight out of the box otherwise there are excellent.
Though on the pickup subject I've noticed a few loco's that are brand new arriving with me where 1 or more pickups are not touching the wheels not just from Hornby either, might be worth for yourself to keep an eye out for it.

At that price, the valves should have been metal and turned, and the buffers sprung. Hornby cheapskating again where they really shouldn't. Agreed it looks lovely and runs very nicely.

    • @andrewdking
      @andrewdking 2 роки тому +2

Not possible. Components can only be turned on a lathe if it has a common axis, hence the whistle on the cab roof. The dome is an assembly of parts moulded as a single piece, hence its painted plastic. It would look much better if Hornby used a finer metallic paint.
The buffers if you look (similar to their Terrier) are aligned to the chassis, so no room for a typical spring mechanism. Its not cheap skating, just common engineering sense.

@@pettra1 you will find my comments all over Sam's reviews. If there is one manufacturer who really does overcharge its Heljan. I think you will find Hornby and Bachmann are in the same ballpark price wise. Sam moans at both of them

Every time I go to get a new loco I normally consider a Peckett but I always get something else personally I prefer the light green one with red siderods but that’s just my opinion. Great review Sam 😁 (also I saw this loco at the St. Helens transport museum in 2014 I think)

That would be Niclausse, the first one I bought cus it was the prettiest green one at their initial introduction by Hornby

Very nice Sam Pecketts are cute because of their small size and fun fact I’ve actually driven a Peckett or at least an engine very similar to a Peckett in real life and see the steam train I’ll be driving in August it will probably be a saddle tank engine and a longer run and hopefully pulling some coaches so hopefully this train driving experience will be even better than the last one because of the bigger loco and more carriages and longer run, take care cheers :)

These are not made in HO scale are they? I've seen plenty of HO scale 0-4-0s from other manufactures but, at least here in the US, they tend to lean heavily towards the all black visuals, this one looks absolutely fantastic with the bright colors (regardless of whether or not that is realistic)

    Pointless story time:
I am an industrial loco fan and when this model was announced it was revolutionary - a RTR industrial 0-4-0ST?! Amazing!
Well anyway I couldn't decide which one to go for and pre-ordered all 3 opting to base it on physical appearance when they arrived...
Anyway I bought all 3... So what about the Hawthorn Leslie?... I'd rather not talk about it any more....

I agree this is a wonderful engine - what amazingly intricate lining. It just needs etched nameplates. With inflation, the price is okay.

It's sad to see the state the real Daphne is in. Such a small locomotive, surely money can be found to restore it. Perhaps Hornby could use some of its rip off pricing money to fund a full restoration.

i like the peckett it is nicely done and it is
to bad that hornby `s build qality on the other models lacks the nice build quality that the peckett has.
thanks for a great review on a nicely made peckett.
