Inside the Tombs - Pompeii Part 2 🇮🇹

  • The necropolis is set on the sides of a road that runs parallel with the city walls. There are several burial monuments that exemplify the most popular models at the beginning of the 1st century BC, the period when the necropolis began to be visited, and 79 AD. These include the tomb of Eumachia, the priestess who financed the construction of a large building in the Forum dedicated to Augustan Concord and Piety. Here, inside an enclosure, there is the high basis over which a semi-circular (exedra) opens up, inside of which the burial chamber is found.
Two tombs are seen on the sides of the tomb of Eumachia, with a basis surmounted by an aedicula that hosts the statues of the deceased. However, the simplicity distinguishes the enclosed tombs in which the ashes of the deceased deposited in the urns are placed in earthen pits or in the base of the monument. The poorer tombs are evidenced by the presence of rough stone busts called "columelle". The cippus of Titus Suedius Clemens, the magistrate who was sent by Emperor Vespasian to rectify the unauthorised constructions in the city after the earthquake of 62 AD, can be seen from near the centre of the intersection of the road that goes from Nocera gate and the path along which the Necropolis is found.
    Date of excavation: 1954-1956; 1996-1997. #cemetery #pompeii #naples

The significance of this tradegy is palpable as you walk amongst these poor victims of such an ungodly natural disaster. To know it encompassed an entire city and more for miles beyond, it is hard to wrap one's head around it. You have given me a gift, I can never repay. It is difficult to observe, yet one cannot help but pray for the souls of all the deceased. May they rest in everlasting peace.

How humbling to see these pictures. The frailty of man against nature's insurmountable events. Absolutely haunting.

I went to Pompeii back in 1984 when I was in the U.S. navy. So much has been excavated since then. Would love to see it again one day.

Thank you Dan for an amazing video. It is surprising to see the burial customs haven't change that much in so many years. We still have mausoleums with families buried together, individual Small tombs with their ID stones. Very beautiful.

Noticed most of the bodies were facing the same way and some looked like they were trying to shield another person. Sad but I’m amazed at the same time.Thank you for filming. You showed us more than history books. Very lush and green there. Looks to be taken care of !

Watched part 1 and 2, totally amazing! Thank you so much. My prayers are with Italy right now, specifically the Campagna region, hoping that the Campi Flegrei volcano situation doesn't escalate.

Absolutely stunning grave yard. The statues are phenomenal. My Granda's nickname was Pompeii and its on his headstone. He got called into WW2 when he was 18 and i believe he was from Portsmouth. Cracking place Dan,thanks 👌🏻

Wow. Incredible. 20 B.C. Seems almost impossible they would still look like that. I guess because the statues were covered. Incredible. History before your eyes.

Good video. Have you considered the local war cemeteries? My grandfather's buried just outside Naples and although I haven't been there for 40+ years I remember it being a lovely peaceful place.

Very Enjoyable seeing these ancient burial sites of over 2000 years ago featuring higher up people of the Roman times. Also, I find it fascinating that the Roman Empire spread all the way to Britain as well as shown here.

We didn't see these when my friend and I went to Pompeii (but then we did get roped into a guided tour to see just a few of the popular sites - the brothel, some of penises that were carved everywhere, the Beware of the Dog house, etc) but I'd love to go back and see some of the things we missed, the Necropolis amongst them. The plaster casts of the bodies are so poignant aren't they? And I think it's amazing how much new stuff is being uncovered seemingly almost on a daily basis. Did you get to see the bodies at Herculaneum on this trip?

Why would you stand up on a wall that is clearly crumbling to take a look over the edge. True enough that was what it was meant for many hundreds of years ago but not in 2024.
