Isn't it about the only way we can go. Everything is energy and the energy has to be manifested in some way. It may not be correct the way it is put up but currently in my opinion it has to be something like that. They find that photons (electromagnetic waves) are energy carrying waves but how? They find that electrons are energy carrying waves but again how? I don't think that there are any particles at all at that scale.
We know that things appear solid when we touch it but we also know that it is build up of molecules that doesn't exactly fill up all the space. That doesn't appear to worry us. We know that molecules are made of atoms and there again even more space is empty and we don't complain. We know that again even more space again is empty between the particles that we think are there in the atom. Does it worry us? No we accept it all as a material. Why should it then worry that the smallest of what we call particles are not solid but some fluctuations of energy. The question is just how is that fluctuation build up?

I don't think that anything on that scale is proven or disproven as yet. If so please tell me what is energy, what is an electric field and what is a magnetic field. I don't mean how we measure it and how it shows up but what it actually is. What is it that is actually coming out from a positive or negative charge and what is it that is going between the North and the South poles on a magnet.
