Great looking eggplant. I grow one eggplant in an 18 gallon container. Eggplant can live up to 8 years and get over 5 ft tall. However, they become less productive as they get older, so I usually only keep them about 3 years.
Hi Gary, I have sweet peppermint growing in a bed a little distance from my eggplants. No flea beetles on my eggplant; theyre infesting my mint. I grow mint because I use it a lot in my drinking water and evening social cocktails. I realized that the little black dots on my mint leaves are flea beetles and my eggplant bushes are perfectly fine and happy:):):). So, I finally decided to plant more mint in another area of my garden to enjoy for myself. Live and learn and compromise for the good of all LOL....
Interesting. I have mint around in other places. Maybe Ill pot more up for next year. Hi Gary. I planted one eggplant this year for the first time. I'm in zone 7 as well. I started with a transplant I purchased. It started off terribly. The bugs were getting to it and it looked as if I lost the battle. I removed it from that bed and placed it in my front bed(lots of sun) and placed my makeshift greenhouse (large cutoff plastic bottle)over it to get strong. It did the trick!! It turned out great!!🤗🤗. It's as tall as I am and I just removed two fruits. Large and beautiful. Haven't had a problem with bugs since, thank goodness. I like the feel of the leaves, like suede 😌. One plant and I have at least 9 fruits growing.
Nice job in changing location. They love the heat and I think that did it. Hi Gary, thanks for the invite. I have concerns for my eggplant. Should I cut it down to the ground since it's becoming colder? How can I keep it safe throughout the winter?
Hi there. Can you explain how you made the makeshift greenhouse? I'm in the tropics & for some reason most of the gardeners here struggle to get our eggplant (we call them melongene or locally 'baigan'), to bear. They grow great, bear endless flowers but never bear. The commercial farmers get yield because they load up theirs with inorganic pesticides & fertilizers. I don't want to go that route. I like the ideas in this video & in the comments.
We grow everything as organic as possible for our own use. Flea beetles have been a problem many times. The only thing I have found to work is a dust like you use BUT I put a large black plastic bag over the plant. I dust in the evening, cover the plant then I wait till about noon so its nice and warm in there and they are active. Then I pull it off and rinse. It has worked well for many years.
I use the bag trick too at times. Bag in the evening remove in the morning and rinse. I was at Lowe's buying pepper plants, and accidently picked up/bought an eggplant. This was very helpful. I didn't know it needed staking up like the tomato plants. So far it is growing great. Thank you.

Super helpful advice. Especially regarding fertilizer and the nitrogen content when plants are in the leaf stage. I am growing eggplants from seed for the first time this year and they are about 3 inches high. This is where I have come to find advice on UA-cam and found your advice helpful.

Gary I never grew egg plant before as I didn't think I liked to eat it ( even though I had never tasted it in my life). When I started my vege garden I asked a great friend, who is a Horticulturist with so many Degrees & Masters it makes my head swim, what seeds would he like me to grow for him- he asked me to grow Mediterranean Egg Plant so I did & WOW you have never seen anything like my egg plants from seed. I had to give so many away as quite mature plants as I knew I could never grow & look after that many, but the ones I planted in my vege garden are just amazing & I have made / given to neighbors & canned so many recipes with them it is just insane. I use Neem Oil (organic of course) to stop all problems I ever have. My point is you have helped me also experiment ( like he did) & go out of my comfort zone- so Thank You. Cheers Denise- Australia
Soooo good. Experimenting is the key to having fun and learning. I am still experimenting. Good luck in you summer season now. I have large 5 gallon empty water jugs that we cut the bottom off. We keep them covered till they are quite large. We then use spinosyn spray. I put an egg in the bottom of the hole. Also my organic home made fertilizer.

Make eggplant choka with these. Rub them down with oil and roast over medium open flame until charred. Keep turning them to ensure even cooking. When done, remove the outer skin, leaving just the inside of the eggplant and cut off the stem (this part is messy and you don't always get all the charred pieces out). Smash with a fork or potato smasher then add grated garlic, grated or finely chopped onions, some hot pepper (optional) and salt (all these ingredients to taste, you can also saute these if you don't like them raw)... Finally, heat some oil in a frying pan until very hot (usually about a 1/4 cup for a very large eggplant but you can use less), pour this over the eggplant and mix or put the eggplant into the frying pan after the oil has been heated and mix (be careful with this step). Typically served with sada roti in Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹, however you can have it with pita bread, chipatti or even bread or bakes. Locally we call eggplants by two popular names; melongene or bhaigan (by-gun). Keep your videos coming.... Here's a link to a local cook demonstrating it with a slightly different version.. ua-cam.com/video/L8Z_5rDV1n8/v-deo.html
Got the first flowers on my two eggplants this week. Not going to do much this year, however, I'll try again next year and hope they will flower and set fruit earlier.

Spider mites infect my eggplants. I have black beauty type. I have 2 plants that have been in the same spot for 3 years, this will be their 4 th year. . I am in zone 10b and can have eggplant year round. I spray with neem oil recipe you have posted. I trim them down in the spring and surprisingly they come back up. I use Jobes tomato vegetable fertilizer, they do well with it. I give them miracle grow early spring or late winter, depends on our California seasons. Thanks for these extra tips.

Thanks for your video it was very informative. Don't know if I missed what you said about yellowing leaves but I live in the Caribbean and I planted some eggplant from seeds, they've grown to the point where they're only giving me flowers and the leaves are yellowing mostly at the bottom. It's great that the fertilizer recommendations stay reasonably unchanged between different vegetables, because I grow all my stuff in few big pots and the plants in a same pot kind of need to deal with the same fertilizer and routines😅 I don't know what is wrong with the fertilizer manufacturers that they just fail to bring npk 5-5-5 fertilizers to the store shelves! Not even the garden centers had what I was looking for🤨 I had the nugget of knowledge that I should look for a fertilizer with a high middle number for my chilis and there wasn't one. The stuff they sell to consumers always has so much nitrogen in them that I get too much leafy growth. Finally I got something from Amazon...Fish, blood and bone 3-9-3 and liquid water solubles 6-7-11 and 4-3-6. I think this next season will be great!
Plants are pretty much happy as long as NPK is present. The middle number keep it simple and often cheaper. Glad to share. And best way to do things is to prune a few of a variety and see how they do things in your garden. Earn 15% by becoming a Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop Affiliate. Much of what I buy is 4-4-4. or like 4-4-8 or 4-6-4 or 5-3-5 or etc. Ecoscraps was one of the only companies that I saw with a straight up 5-5-5 fertilizer. I use a fertilizer thats called Perfect Blend Biotic its a 4-4-4 organic commercial grade fertilizer a little more advanced than the standard stuff at stores and it has everything including trace minerals for heavy feeding crops.

What is the suggested treatment of lace winged ..its occupied my bittergourd plant... snd also.of small white flies which often I see when I shake the leaves..plz suggest.
I planted eggplant for the first time and I never experienced any problems but this year I was so frustrated and angry when the snail chopped the whole plant the remaining I saw leaves with yellow darkish spots without thinking I just took the sanitizer which has alcohol and add little dish soap and spray them and OMG I killed all six plants do you think they can be revived but I started afresh planting new ones what a blow for me😭😭😭🇿🇦

I just saw a video where the gardener stated it’s best to pick the eggplant before it gets too big… When they have lots of seeds, it means they were planted too late.
Egg plants are resilient there is absolutely no need for pesticides if you do the following have inground composting and attract Birds. Avoiding pesticides but I agree with iron phosphate as it becomes fertiliser!

I have a problem getting eggplant seeds to germinate. I tried several types of seeds from different sources, and yet I totally fail every time. I used a ready-made seed starting mix, made my own seed starting mix using peat moss and vermiculite (3-1), and even tried a potting mix. Not a single seed would germinate. Is there any reason why my eggplant is so stubborn???
Hmm, I dont know why. Try putting like 5 seeds in each space and maybe use a heating mat. Got a Japanese eggplant starter from a local nursery in April. It is June and it hasn't grown. It is in a raised bed with organic potting soil amended with compost. I've never grown eggplant before but shouldn't it be starting to blossom by now let alone be bigger than 8 inches?
If it is warm yes. Give it some water soluble fertilizer and the warm weather should get it going. Introduction to Creating an Edible Landscape: ua-cam.com/video/iOMJ_rbFupM/v-deo.html

My eggplant is still coming in and it’s November. Can they keep producing thru winter?
Great looking eggplant. I grow one eggplant in an 18 gallon container. Eggplant can live up to 8 years and get over 5 ft tall. However, they become less productive as they get older, so I usually only keep them about 3 years.
wow I had no idea!
Thanks

Thanks in advance for your advice :).

Much of what I buy is 4-4-4. or like 4-4-8 or 4-6-4 or 5-3-5 or etc. Ecoscraps was one of the only companies that I saw with a straight up 5-5-5 fertilizer. I use a fertilizer thats called Perfect Blend Biotic its a 4-4-4 organic commercial grade fertilizer a little more advanced than the standard stuff at stores and it has everything including trace minerals for heavy feeding crops.
a recent study showed that moths/ nocturnal butterflies are one of the more important pollinators that pollinate over night. study by richard walson published in biology letters

I planted eggplant for the first time and I never experienced any problems but this year I was so frustrated and angry when the snail chopped the whole plant the remaining I saw leaves with yellow darkish spots without thinking I just took the sanitizer which has alcohol and add little dish soap and spray them and OMG I killed all six plants do you think they can be revived but I started afresh planting new ones what a blow for me😭😭😭🇿🇦
Give them a big drink of water soluble nitrogen. I the leaves can come back if the stem is okay.

Can I use Neem Oil instead of Peppermint Oil to mix with water to spray on the plant ?
You can. They do different things.
