Using a Blow-off Tube for Home Fermentation

  • When you have a vigorous fermentation there's a chance that you will "blow the top" off your fermentor. To avoid this use a blow off tube to give your fermentation more room to move! Using a blow off tubing has many advantages over a simple air lock. First you avoid having your fermenter covered in sticky yeast glop. Second it's a surefire way to keep the air out of your brew. and third the tubing is easy to clean.

    When I was a kid my dad had a big demijohn (30liters) and when I was standing next to it the bottle exploded - the glass broke into pieces. I was obviously blamed for it... I wish I could go back in time and show him your video!

    this is the only video I've seen on UA-cam where someone was smart enough to just say "shove the blow off tube in the fermenter and the other end in a bucket of sanitizer"
    I have to create a blow off this morning for my one gallon brew. did just that.

    I switched to doing this awhile ago because i had an air lock clog up and cause my lid to blow off once. I don't know why everyone doesn't just use the tube method. So much better.

    My third batch of home brewed beer left me dealing with krausen on the floor, walls and ceiling at 4AM after a blowout (the popping sound woke me up from another room). I wonder how many viewers are here after a similar experience... if only I knew beforehand. My ceiling looks almost back to normal now, a little bleach solution should take care of the last bit of discoloration. I hope the beer will still be good, it's still fermenting, but past the point where another blowout is a risk.

    Thank you very much for the info, I just wish my explosion happened while supply store was open, why does this stuff have to happen at midnight......... :(

    Thank you for showing what happened when you don’t use a blowoff tube.

    After a big mess, this looks like a far better option. Using a wide tube makes a lot of sense because then it can't get clogged up.

    I wish I would have watched this before I went out and got a large blow off tube for my 6 gallon better bottle. Is there a bung that might fit the tube to my better bottle?

    What's the size of the tubing for the glass carboy?

    bet I am not the only Hot Pepper Fermenter visiting this video - I am trying to perfect my process for 1 gallon ferments of hot peppers from my garden - this year I am fermenting in 1 gallon carboys to ensure my process is flawless before going to larger carboys next year but I am having trouble keeping enough water over the top of my peppers because peppers float - so there's always an inch or so of space at the top of my carboy with peppers sticking up about my brine - I am actually trying to learn how to pass water through the airlock / bubbler that I have - I also may opt to do some tubes into a bucket but guessing that pepper ferments don't produced the level of C02 that you brewers are dealing with.

    Isn't there a better way than just a 'snug fit' cause when the tube is sanitized it gets slippery.

    Maye stupid question, but if its blow out yeast do I have enough yeast to ferment with? I had a mess a couple of days ago and it blew of like 1 litre from my 59l batch and after this my fermentation seems to go from hero to zero :(

    Does anyone know if a blowout happens does the wort in the primary fermenter need to be thrown out? Our wort has basically stopped the fermentation process from what we can tell.

    • @BrewingTV
      @BrewingTV  3 роки тому +1

      You shouldn't have to throw out your wort just b/c of a blowoff. Only if anything fell back into the wort that could potentially contaminate it. Most likely, you're good to go and continue racking and/or packaging.

    I had the sanitizer begin to creep up the blow off tube toward the beer. Has this happened to anyone else?

  • @ahmedzunayed7528
    @ahmedzunayed7528 Рік тому +2

    why sanitizer?

    • @BrewingTV
      @BrewingTV  6 місяців тому +1

      In case for some reason the liquid gets pulled back into the fermenter you'd rather it be sanitizer solution than water that might have unknown bacteria, etc it in. Same for regular airlocks... or actually for airlocks, I specifically use bottom shelf vodka or whisky just to keep it more sterile than any possible water that might get in there.

    Hi, how much sanitizer should one use for a 5 gallon wort?

    • @BrewingTV
      @BrewingTV  6 місяців тому +1

      You don't add sanitizer directly to wort. But if you're asking how much sanitizer to use to make a sanitizer solution, products like StarSan suggest 1oz to 5 gallons of water.

    Really? That big bucket? Can’t use a 500ml water bottle? Where you gonna fit all that gear? 🤦🏽‍♂️
