    Thank you for this, David. I've been reading multiple books I bought and watching your videos (along with several others, i.e. Frederick Dunn, Bug Farmer, etc.) to learn as much as I can for the last 3 or 4 years. I got into this initially because I'm trying to get the agricultural exemption here in Texas, but I genuinely am excited about it and just got my first two packages last month. I've already bought all the hives (I have 9 total hives, even though I only need 6) and even built nice heavy-duty stands for them. This year it was time to start filling them but instead of going full bore, I figured I'd just start with two packages to make sure I can do this. Indeed, I feel a little anxiety about calling myself a "beekeeper" considering the local "club" always has meetings while I'm at work so I gave up on that avenue and have resorted to videos and books. My wife is an amazing gardener (all kinds, vegetable, fruit, flowers, ground cover, etc.) and knows the value of bees so she goes out with me to do inspections. She was so excited to spot both queens in our last inspection!

    What do you do if you split a hive keep the old queen but for some reason she gets bee balled and now I have two hive neither have queens

  • @ericcaldwell9854
    @ericcaldwell9854 2 місяці тому +12

    Splitting... leave queen in the original or move her with resources to the new colony? I have heard both answers, each from sources I would consider "knowledgeable and reputable". It is comforting to hear that both or acceptable. I think I will try to mimic nature and move her to the new colony. But if for some reason I can't (can't find her, for example), I won't panic. I'll check later for eggs and adjust accordingly if necessary. Thank you for the encouragement.

    Year two for me! I had a bad teacher last year, amazing teacher this year. I'm hyped! Got 3 hives so far this year (2 swarms, 1 package). Hive 1 lost it's queen and my teacher gave me another queen :)

    I thought my hive, double deep was doing well very populated, I put on a super to give them more space and start drawing new comb. I missed seeing a swarm cell upon inspection. The queen had laid out 14 frames of brood. Thought this would be great for the nectar flow and have a good honey production. Didn't realize the queen ran out of space and I missed seeing the queen cell they maid. They swarmed. I did catch the swarm and got them into a new 10 frame box. the swarm was huge and filled the entire box, 25,000 bees. The mother hive still has a heavy population, 25,000 bees and now hoping that it is strong enough to maintain the brood that is capped. I am hoping that the new queen gets mated. So all was stressful and overwhelming. Catching the swarm was the easy part. The stressful part is not knowing if the mother hive will recover and if the virgin queen will emerge healthy and get mated

    Your helping me so much. I really appreciate the time you take to help a newbie. I get my bees in may and I have my first box all set up and ready for them. I’m excited and nervous at the same time but your videos have given me the confidence to dive and look forward to the day when I can say I’m a bee keeper.

    Darnit David, you hit the nail on the head. I'm a first year beekeeper getting my packages in May and watching scouts check out my swarm trap. For the last 2 weeks, I've been telling myself I'm not a professional I don't have 1000 colonies these pressures aren't mine. I'm a beginner looking to start a personal journey all my own, and I want to enjoy as much of it as possible. Thank you for such a thoughtful and kind video.

      I installed 2 packages of bees first time 8 years ago and then 5 years ago respectively. Both absconded for different reasons, one of which i could have avoided. I never had any problems working with them. I even put them the my box without even a hat or gloves.
      So now i decided to get an overwintered hive. Last Saturday I went to pick it up at night and the beekeeper said this Hive is already split once this year and they're getting ready to split again, so you need to put an empty box on it tonight, and if you can, take a frame of brood out of this box and put it in the top box. My thought was what the heck? It was a near fiasco opening a full hive AT NIGHT, and no way did i attempt to take out a frame of brood under those conditions. I got stung multiple times, but it's okay. Sunday I'm actually going to suit up and get my smoker going and open the hive for the first time for real. I'll tell you what, I can tell the difference between package bees that don't have a hive to defend and one that does.!!

      @user-ee9ym9qc7u 2 місяці тому

      I'll be starting my packages in 5 frame nucs with drawn comb so I'm counting on the queen being able to lay upon release. If I'm super lucky and catch a swarm in time I may even add some open brood. Enjoy working your new bees on Sunday I'm so excited for the first time I suit up to work bees. 🐝 🐝 🐝

    In my opinion. I would encourage every new beekeeper to get a package for their first time. Why!!!!! It’s a rush. Your first time, bee’s everywhere! Flying all over, not yet a true colony. Everything is new. The queen is new. The bees know there is a queen but they are new to her, you the beekeeper new to all of it!!! It’s a rush!!! I would even go as far as saying it’s like a “right of passage”!! Lol! This is my 3rd year as a beekeeper. I still could not tell you what each part of a bees leg is called or the scientistic name it’s called. But I consistently look things up, learn this or that. Then try to put it into practice when I’m out in my new yard. Try to solve problems with this hive or that hive. It’s not rocket science….. but problem solving. But you have to understand the problem before you can solve it. Have to read, ask, research, and willing to swallow pride and ask more experienced beekeepers.

    When can you start moving them closer together?
