Really useful. Just received mine today and your guidance was very helpful in making me decide on this product and suggesting how to attach it to a bike rack. Cheers
I believe Garmin sells a License plate kit that allows for the BC40 to be mounted above the License plate. That would also solve your bike rack problem. Costs about 30 Euros (I am in Europe).
How could any manufacturer even contemplate selling an expensive camera that is so easy to steal and most buyers end up having to create a Heath Robinson car mount? I have just bought their Sat nav and am looking whether to purchase a BC 40 Camera and was surprised to find there is no dedicated glass mount to mount the camera inside the rear window!
Who doesn't love a useless mirror!? 🤔😂 Looks a nice bit of kit and there's nothing wrong with that image, it's more than clear enough. Clever thinking with the bike rack/camera angle work around. Looks the part. 👍😊
Great video! Any insights on how safe this device is in hot summers ? I'm a bit concerned about the lithium ion battery catching fire in extreme temperatures ?
Very interesting video - thank you. I have an Avtex Tourer 2 sat nav which is made by Garmin and compatible with the BC40. My concerns were :- would it be easy for the camera to bounce out of it's plastic holder when driving ? and it seems very easy to steal should you forget to remove every time you stop.
I thought exactly the same thing but it is really solid in the holder however to stop it being stolen I have filed 2 slots into the base where it meets to bike rack and put 2 cable ties through as this will stop it falling off and also put off someone trying to steal it, you can see they cable ties in the video at about 3.28
Can this sat nav camera be mounted high on the back of a motorhome about 2.5 meters up and tilt slightly downwards, I have looked at some pictures and it seems to have a plastic stopper so can only point straight or upwards? I guess you could mount it upside down but will that show a picture the wrong way on the sat nav?
I’m considering this now. And though it’s possible to mount it to the top of an RV, Garmin says the maximum functional distance between camera and monitor/GPS unit is 25 feet.
I'm interested in the recording function of this camera with the Garmin dashcam. Do you know if it continuously records front view and rear view at the same time?
Mines been left on the van all year round in as low as -3 and still works, I finally changed the batteries after a year but it was still working I just thought it was time to change them
@@WhatWouldGordonDo Thank you! To my other question the answer is yes: you can pair up to 4 cameras. But you cant see them at the same time nor choosing one directly, only sequentially. This idea is brilliant but needs some work.
@@WhatWouldGordonDo What I am really looking for is a system similar to Adasisan 360 View (not sure if it will happen though). You see your car all the time from "above" but also the road (front rear left right, depending what gear you are or if you turn the blink), so drive assistant plus parking assistant but also records and also serves as parking mode. 4 in 1 so to speak :)
So Elvis lives and drives a Bongo😁 sorry couldn't resist........do you drive in your blue suede shoes, no bumpy roads though or you'll be all shook up. Careful where you drive though, cos you will end up in the ghetto. The good thing about having a home on wheels is that you don't have to stay in the heartbreak hotel. Looks a good bit of kit you have bought. Great review. Thanks
Thanks that has really made my day, I nearly spat my custard cream out, the irony of it all is that I actually cut my own hair and normally have a number 3 all over but I chose the lockdown haircut elvis look which Mrs B finds highly amusing 👍
Sweet, wireless is the only way to go! Hey are you using lithium batteries or regular alkaline? And how long have they lasted? Do you use rechargeables?
Does it really take 2 seconds to find the camera? Sounds short but not when waiting to reverse? Can the camera come on automatically when reversing or only manually?
It can turn on automatically but it takes longer for the sensors to realise that you are going backwards but yes it does take 2 secs to manually turn it on
Hi i wonder how the night vision is like when using the rear view camera? Does it have light support to brighten up at night? Thank you in advance for your answer.
What Would Gordon Do? Thank you for your answer. It helped me to choose whether or not I’m going to buy the camera since it’s very costly on its own and you have to purchase a separate GPS navigation system to pair up with it. I found a secondhand navigator system which cost me a little amount I might purchase the camera then. So much thank you for your video and answers. It helped me a lot.
You say you can have, for instance, 3 cameras at once? Have you tried it? I suppose you can only select one at a time in the Garmin screen? Thank you! P.S: It also would be nice if the camera(s) could be voice controlled though. EDIT: I just read they have -- do they?
If someone wants to take it they will even if you zip tie it on but it is so quick to remove and refit that I take it off when not using the van and put it back on when I am using it
Same could be said for youtube, Facebook and Instagram not using your mic and search habits to tailor adverts lol, me not wanting people to know where my vehicle is parked is my choice and I'm happy with it but thanks for watching
@@WhatWouldGordonDo Well no, a vehicle is many orders of magnitude harder to steal than a device clipped to a number plate. Cars have immobilisers and alarm systems. This Garmin device is a theft concern. Why some who have bought this device have fabricated their own attachment devices and used theft proof security screws. Something Garmin themselves could have done. It might be easy to unclipped when you leave the vehicle but that's going to get tiresome very quickly. And of course you have to carry it around with you. The other points not in this devices favour are that the time for this device to boot up is lengthy and some owners have said that's an inconvenience. The other point is that few people leave their Garmin Sat Navs permanently set up. They are not used for most journeys which are familiar. In fact here in the UK if you leave a Sat Nav in your car, set up and ready to go, you are asking for a smashed window and it to be stolen. Thus, with no Sat Nav in use for most of the journeys people do, that are familiar, there's no back up camera functioning either. And it's local, familiar, short range journeys where back up cameras are used most. For the above reasons, if you need a reversing camera, better to buy a dedicated, perfectly mounted device that isn't much more expensive.
I bought B30 instead of B40 and hook up on top of the back door. It works perfect and now I can see behind the car when backing up.

I love his pronunciation of by-wak. It took me a while to realize he meant bike rack.
Thanks, im pretty sure if you had videos up I could pick holes in your pronunciation of certain words as well but glad you liked the video 👍
Thank you for all your hard work.
Thank you kindly.
Good explanation and tutorial as always.
Cheers m8.
Good explanation. Just bought one and these tips really helped. Thanks

Unfortunately I bought one of these but its a Japanese import van and the license plates are an odd size
That is frustrating and interesting at the same time to learn

Very thorough video. Thank you!
Useful video - many thanks!
Do you have to use a Garmin wireless camera or will the GPS work with any wireless camera?
What mount are you using for the sat nav?
I love my garmin don't think i can drive without it anymore hehe. do voice command work with the camera?
Why not make a bracket whit hinge. But great video! I ordered now camera and Garmin Camper 895

It's actually 7 inches. Or 17.7 centimetres. Not 6.1 inches
720p probably looks better on the 5 inch
Thankyou for the detailed demonstration

You can invert the picture and you can adjust the angle of the camera, there is a stop but it gives you about 170degree movement

I have mine linked to my satnav as it is in the video and there is no option to record any of the footage it is only a live feed

Nice video. If you really want to over engineer the bracket then make it so that you can tilt the camera. No two brackets needed. 😉

Suction cup garmin mount stuck to the cubby box above the radio

The Camera has a really good quality, but there should be something who locks it into the Car, because it's easy to get stolen by strangers.
