On the surface your experience appears to be the same to his, but we don't know all and every variable that ensured that you did not turn out like him. It's all so complex. I had an incredibly abusive upbringing as well. My parents would often beat and yell at me even if it was for something as trivial as getting a C+ on a single subject. Sometimes they would even deprive me of sleep forcing me to stand up on my 2 feet throughout the night. My school life was hell as well. From 2nd to 12th grade I've been brutally bullied. 2nd to 8th grade I was constantly beaten, teased, and mocked just because of my autistic traits (e.g. lack of eye contact and difficulty reading body language). In high school I was shunned, ostracized, and excluded like there was no tomorrow also because of my autistic traits. During those years virtually nobody did a damn thing to improve my quality of life. No intervention, nothing. Yet, the thought of murdering anybody never crossed my mind. And it very likely never will.

the idea that a terrible upbringing is at least partly responsible for their crimes is a worn out reason for people resorting to those act of violence. I'm anti capital punishment person but we need to stop this line of reasoning.

I feel for John's son, but this father committed a crime. There's a mother, father that won't see their kid again because of his father's actions. The law was broken, the punishment has been set.
