Bahamas #9: In the SOUP (IFR) on the Last Leg!

  • Bye bye Huntsville, it's time to head home. There's some delay as we attempt to get our IFR release on the ground but we finally get it and have a nice departure into an 800 ft ceiling. We were able to find the perfect cruising altitude between layers in smooth air. As we cross thru Nashville Approach airspace there was a humorous interaction between the controller and a King Air. By the time we hit Illinois, the weather was clear. In descent for landing we found some turbulence and had a bumpy/gusty landing.
Thank you all for your continued support and we look forward to more 2019 flying adventures!

Lol it reminded me of the old story about the pilot that answered altitude when the controller said say altitude. Finally the controller came back with- say cancelling IFR. Controller for the win :D

I landed at Niles Michigan (3TR) on my way to Traverse City last year with a swirling wind coming around a group of trees west of runway 33. Felt just like your landing, I was on the ground for a second or so, then got lifted about 5 feet by a gust. Added a little power for a cushion and landed again. :-) My wife gave me this quizzical look. It was one of those "I hope no one saw that" moments. Pretty cool fuel stop as we landed behind a beautiful Howard piloted by a gentleman who was probably in his mid seventies along with his wife. I helped them push to the pumps and then to parking. A sudden gust with a little extra speed happens to all of us. Hey, it keeps us on our toes and our responses sharp. Great video, great trip, thanks for bringing us along.

Like riding a bull....I can relate. Gusts 25 and at least 15 crosswind component. Of course I wasn't in the cockpit with you but I thought the landing was fine. Rarely have I seen a pilot land as consistently smooth as you do. End of an epic Bahamas adventure. Thank you Kevin and Jamie for allowing my wife and I to ride along, awesome footage !

Hello Kevin, this was a fantastic video !! Jaime was an excellent co- pilot, flying at 8000 was a blast, love the airspeed of your 310, thanks for some nice camera out the side windows, plane sounds great as usual, now I would love to comment on your landing !! You nailed that landing with bull winds and you know it !! I was tense watching, first time for me, I knew you were going to have those winds coming in, that plane was being pushed left, then when you touched down your right wing came up some, you handled both outstanding !! As I said before, you and that 310 are one !!!

Great video of the return trip. I really enjoyed the Bahama series of videos. Tough to get back to reality after such a great vacation but I’m sure you missed the kids. I went on a lot of deployments in my military career and the best part was seeing our two young boys come racing up to me on the ramp as I de-planed the C-130 or the C-5, C-141, etc. etc. I haven’t seen your video with your kids yet but it’s on my list. Happy New Year to you both.

Nice flight! I fly a Cherokee 180 N72CD out of Aurora. Heard you coming back from Bessie's a while back as we were going up. A suggestion on the radio static. Spray some Corrosion X in the jack. Learned that from Neil, the airport manager from Marshall County who has since passed. He did all the emergency repairs for Beechcraft at Oshkosh. He forgot more than 99% mechanics know. It's worth a try, I did it and haven't had a problem since.

Somebody probably already told you this, but getting the telephone hookup for getting your clearances only works if you have a quick finger. 4 clicks in just half a second means pushing the mike button just about as fast as you can say, "1,2,3,4". I spent 26 years talking on a radio. People in "scanner land", were listening unless we were on the scrambler. In my field things sometimes went from boredom to wide open in zero seconds, so the occasional slip was gonna happen.
Details of which will have to wait until a more private form of communication is available LOL.
I doubt the King Air Pilot will slip up again like that...not for a long time.
