Oh my goodness! I’d always cooked my Japanese sweet potatoes in my instant pot. Never again! Baked this way, they are literally “crack”! Cold, eaten out of hand for breakfast with broccoli, amazingly delicious!!!’ Thank you, Chels!!
I’m jealous of the variety you can get!
Agreed!
I can only get the Beauregard ones
@@shawnastinnett1584 Same :(.
The same here. We only got the oranje one and the purple one 🙄
@@ManuelaChristina1 same here in Ontario, Canada. Orange sweet potatoes!!
Me too! I did find he Japanese ones at Trader Joe’s here in Ohio.
I absolutely love you. I’m so so happy I found your channel!! I love the way you break everything down to make it super simple to stay on track. I’ve been STRUGGLING the past few months to get back to eating WFPB. I’ve watched a bunch of different UA-cam videos trying to get motivated, but a lot of what’s out there seems to be these super complicated recipes. But you make it simple and fun, and have made me feel like it’s possible to do this after all. Thank you so much 💖💖
The noise is real girl 😂 that’s why I listen every podcast episode that you put out because I know you make a huge effort to record without noise love from New York USA ❤️💕🙋🏻♀️😘
I had my first taste of sweet potato cut and baked similar to your method seasoned with S & P and whoa-Nelly!! damn good! I put a thin smear of hummus and added a sprinkle of toasted sesame seed! WOW! Absolutely incredible. Its the first time eating this potato type with its skin. Nice chew texture, incredible flavor! I love all potatoes so I'm excited to see how my life changes. 400ºF for about an hour. THANK YOU!! 😘
New Zealand has such nice produce
I think you're my favorite wfpb youtuber. You're my kinda chick. Keep posting these I always look forward to it!
You now have me obsessed with Japanese sweet potatoes. It’s hard to find them where I live and are expensive when I do, but so worth it!!! Yesterday I spent $21 on them! Thank you for the amazing recommendations. Love your accent! I’m in the US.
I recently just tried the Japanese sweet potato and the sweet potato thats white outside and purple inside. They were amazing. Definitely a game changer for me. Sad I have trouble finding them close to me.
I’m not a mom but I still always park next to the cart return 😂😂😂
Me too
This is the most informative video on sweet potatoes. Thank you!
This Is very timely for me. My babies just about to turn 5 months and sweet potato is going to be his first food.
Thanks for all the comparisons. Good to see the before cooking and after, and get an idea of taste.
Have you ever tried the Purple Flesh Sweet Potatoes? The have them in Okinawa, Japan and Hawaii. They are called Okinawan Sweet Potatoes or Hawaiian Sweet Potatoes. They are delicious and full of antioxidants.
Expensive $3 a lb in New York
Red kumara have always been my favourite! They taste like roasted chestnuts when you roast them! I also love the purple kumara which look like beetroot when they’re cooked
I almost passed this video, but I'm so glad I didn't! I learned a lot! I live on the northeast coast of the U.S. I can get a small variety of sweet potatoes if I go to a Whole Foods grocery store. I adore hannah yams. Thanks for the great content! I also very much enjoy your podcast!
I’m outside of Houston, far from Whole Foods, grateful for a Trader Joe’s , not so far. They have Japanese sweet p…..pricy.
I love all of your content! I can’t explain how much all of your videos have helped me get started with my weight loss. ❤️
I love this deep dive into sweet potato varieties! Great video Chelsea! Thanks for sharing.
Yes, Thank you for explaining the different potatoes! So helpful! Love your videos! So true!!!
This video is the most helpful for sweet potato information! Thank you!
Love your video, so informative!
Really informative video! Thanks so much!
So glad I found you!
I love how informative your videos are and I love your humour and how you keep things so light hearted
Thank you so much for sharing 🤗🤗🤗🤗
Loved this video !! Very informative... more like this would be wonderful! Maybe recipe ideas using sweet potato xx
Hi, In depth and informative. Thank you ❣ 🥰😊🥰
So helpful! Thank you ☺️
Thank you Chelsea. Really helpful video.
Really terrific video! I love love love Japanese sweet potatoes. They can be a bit difficult to find, but I stock up. Great information 😊 🌱
Perfect, great information!
Excellent info, thank you 😊.
Chelsea, I owe you my thanks. I was used to orange flesh sweet potatoes but only on the holidays; Thanksgiving and Christmas! But since wanting to begin WFPB eating, I came to realize sweet potatoes are a staple food. I didn't know which others I'd like. So, I went shopping at an Asian market and bought 1 of each. It was the best money I'd spent in a long time. I love a white fleshed light orangie/reddish skinned variety sort of like the Hannah, but its flesh looks slightly greenish after baking. It is so yum. I like it warm or cool. And they travel so well. I don't think I would have ever found it if it wasn't for you. Thanks! 🎉😊
Hi Chelsea, Satsumaimo is Japanese. It means a potato (imo)’from the Satsuma region of Japan (it’s in the southern part of Japan, now called Kagoshima. It is purple on the outside and when you bake it, the inside is golden and very sweet.
This made me so happy to watch
Thank you for this super informative video! I’m still trying to like sweet potatoes!
Here in France we've only had easy access to the old orange Sweet potatoes for maybe the last 10 yrs. Maybe in the next 20 yrs we'll have others as well but since I'm 75 yrs old, I doubt I'll ever see them. lol Stay safe
its the same here in Austria. Big hug from Vienna
@@mitstarkeleben2618 My thoughts exactly ! Am also in France :) Would love to try this Japanese sweet potato
I love cooking my sweet potatoes this way! I do the squish test also. :) The only thing I do differently is leave the skin on and take it off after cooking if it isn't very nice. I will have to try peeling mine. Thank you!
I'm just binge watching your channel, have just made your recipe with the nutrional yeast garlic, soy sauce and siracha mixed together and smothered over pumpkin and orange numeral it was so yum., kumera are quite reasonable at the moment I'm thinking of buying a lot and storing them by wrapping in newspaper..love your channel
100% 😘
I know you don't count calories to get into a calorie deficit. But, I like you showing me the information and how you found it on My Fitness Pal app. Fresh from the typical American diet I don't know how you make such HUGE amounts of food in a meal and its only 500 cals! That's amazing, and it looks SO delicious! From watching yours and Tia @HungryVegan Mama I am getting a sense of how much VOLUME of food I can and should be eating to stay full and still be in a calorie deficit. Foods like avocado are calorie dense. Still figuring things out. I'm watching your video "How many calories should you eat to lose fat."
Great video- thank you!!♥️♥️🙏🏻
The Beauregard are the ones we have around here, mostly. I steam them in my Instantpot, halved. Then I keep them in the fridge and eat them as dessert. It reminds me of pumpkin pie!
That is a great idea Wandadiane!
Thank you very much! Got it now!
This is awesome! I will have to look in The shops in Australia. I also love making air fried chips out of them with herbs and spices.
Just baked some of the japanese sweet potatoes after watching your Top 5 vegan weight loss foods and following your pinned card to this one. Can't wait to eat it tonight for dinner
I actually find Japanese sweet potato too sweet on a savoury dish. It could be a dessert in its own right
I really needed to see this video!! I'm excited to try this method out sunday on my prep day!
That was helpful. Thanks! I thought that beauregards were the only type and I don't like the texture of those. But I have been on the lookout for other varieties and have been having some luck at Asian markets. I will give more varieties a chance.
Hi Chelsea, new subscriber here, have been binge watching. I am vegan myself but my weight has been creeping up during the past year and I want to lose some. Your videos are so encouraging and inspiring and I love your positive and bubbly personality . I am wondering about omega 3 oils though, does one get enough on an oil free diet? Much love from Germany. 🥕🥦🥒🥬🍅
Thanks so much for your video! I never knew there were so many different kinds of sweet potato. I live in the UK and we only see the standard Beauregard ones.. I am currently half way through a weight loss challenge, and eat a lot of sweet potatoes. I would love to see more available over here. I’ll look out for them. 🙂🙏🏻❤️
Great video!
Thank you for specifying that yams are Asian centric! I’m from Canada and I’m always like what makes this a sweet potato or a yam? In the stores I don’t know which is which and I never know how to find the ones I like haha. I think you’re right tho, it’s the purple ones that are good ! I rarely I’d ever see those ones!
Hannah yam is my favorite too kiddo!!
Your videos are so helpful thank you 😊 I've just put some kumera in the oven 🤣
Japanese are my favorite.. I hear alot of people talk about purple sweet potatoes maybe cause the color lol and nope they aren't as good... I'm in America and yup the first orange sweet potato is the standard potato here. Easy to buy and find
Thanks for doing the kumura calories
I love that your little girl takes the chips to eat. That's exactly how mine act. 🤷♀️😂
My favorite is purple sweet potatoes but they are only available in fall around where I live, and only at Trader Joe’s. They’re so pretty and bright purple inside!
That was super interesting. I’ve only ever eaten The orange sweet potato 🍠 until I saw the video of you going to the market and you were eating the purple skin sweet potato in the car. So I went out and bought some, baked it and OMG how delicious. Plus I was always scared to eat too much sweet potato or any potato really. I sooo love this calorie deficit eating 😍😍😍
100% 😘
Hi! ❤️ your videos! Where is your Hummus recipe/video, please? TY
Yes!! Eating these Japanese sweet potatoes absolutely stops me from eating processed crap the rest of the day. I eat 2lbs in the morning with 1 on broccoli and I’m so content
Cool thanx for the info always failed at sweet potatoes fries or diced ( like recipes suggested) without added oil was dry and not good. I thought the potatoes where bad but now realize it’s not a good technique for sweet potatoes, always had a great result cutting them in half and baking them skin side up -the end perfect to stuff with all the vegan goodness!
How long do these stay good in the refrigerator once they’re cooked? They’re sooooooo good!!!
OMG how great is that ?! 🥔 🎉 🤩 Here in rural Germany only those that are orange on the inside are available and unfortunately they are also expensive 😔
Love the Japanese variety and Hawaiian 🌺
ha I do wish we had more than 2 varieties in Au ! but yes I'll take the Japanese over the orange
I love the Hannah and Japanese sweet potato. Would love to try Hawaiian but not available in Canada
My diet sucks. My Dog is dying and I'll spend another Christmas alone. But i do like Sweet Potatoes and need something to focus on. Hopeful this might help reset my life
You made me laugh out loud when you said "wash it". 🤣
I really miss the amazing kumara in NZ - the orange variety you get from here in the UK (US grown) are just not the same.
Really educational -I didn’t know that there are so many varieties -I can only get the Beauregard here-
Ty❣️
I am Cornish snd live in Cornwall Great Britain and we can only get Sweet potato’s of the Beauregard Kumara variety and of course lots of white potato’s though not all the same variety you have. I do really like the Beauregard Kumara variety thank you for letting us know what this variety is called and the only variety we can buy here down in the tale end of Great Britain 🇬🇧 🤗 ps I wash skins leave on and bake in oven sometimes I bake as wedges in oven.
I love sweet potatoes! So good with blueberries for breakfast or for lunch with broccoli. Really good.
Thank you for this Video. I am not vegan But searching for Snacks That are healthy and low in calories for weoghtloss. Will definetly try this out. 💕 Love & ☮️ from Germany
Orange sweet potato today in Melbourne $1.30kg! This video is just perfect
I have to try your "squish" test!
Trinidad here we have yams and sweet patatoes and yes they are completly two diffrent things
Chelsea, I would love to know where did you get your shoes in this shopping trip? I am in NZ too.
I roast mine whole. I don't have convection oven so I set the temp at 425 F. I want to try the Hawaiian sweet potatoes. I have to order some.
Love the variety of sweet potato’s you can get. Do you not season with salt n pepper and no oil before baking?
No oil; no salt. I like my taters naked
@@ChelseaMae 😂😂
Do u eat them cold? How would u heat them up? I tried microwave but just got really tough?
For those struggling to find these varieties... Check you import stores! 🥔🍠
If I were to batch cook them, how would I store them for the next day? Would they be mushy?
moved out of the city-NO variety of potatoes like you have....I could eat them so much more. I got SICK of potatoes. Can still stomach the yukon gold, and sometimes sweet potatoes if not real stringy-ugh. The cute baby fingerlings, I used to like but now the little purple ones make me sick! I thought it was odd until I met someone who said she also gets super nauseated and throws up after eating the fingerling purple ones...maybe due to being genetically modified, who knows. Prefer the organic anyway...will have to make a city trip one day which is almost 2 hrs, just to load up on Japanese taters again! Yours look SO yummy when prepared!
Do u put any spices or salt on them when h eat them?
Did you serve the rice cold with the frozen peas? 😮
We only have the one variety where I live in England. The one that goes really orange and mushy 😆 Really interesting to see all the different ones. Thanks Chelsea Mae ❤🙏😘
In Africa we just call it white/purple/orange sweet potatoes in Afrikaans we call it "patats"
I absolutely hate sweet potatoes any suggestions on making them taste better? I know they are really good for you and I'd like to incorporate them in my diet.
What about the purple kind??
Do you eat them cold?
I wished we could get different varieties, can only get the orange flesh ones
Wasn't the calories for the sweet potatoes per 100g? Therefore their calories would be 4x (approx) more?
hi chels!! what’s a good calculator i can use to know how many calories i need? i feel like lots online suggest too low!! thanks xx
Use a tdee calculator.
You can actually get real yams at Asian markets in every city I have lived in US. They are usually in some weird part of the store and heavily waxed but they are there. Also parking your car next to the cart return is a good way to have your car become a cart ram...
Your mike is picking up your voice very well, even with the sounds of kids or bikes in the background. I can still hear you fine. You do, however, blast my ears to pieces when you yell at the motorbikes to pipe down, because you’re so close to the mike.😂
What's your favourite type of sweet potato?
The Stokes purple sweet potatoes are my current fave! They’re hard to find though. Japanese are my next fave
Definitely the Japanese sweet potato! We can only get that and the traditional orange fleshed one
For sure Japanese and the purple ones
Japanese all day
But the ones that are dark purple on the inside could easily pass for candy they're so sweet
I love the white sweet potato and we also have a purple sweet potato that’s bright purple inside. It’s very dense. I think it is a Japanese variety, but I’m not sure. One tip I learned from Healthy Emmie’s YT channel is to freeze the sweet potatoes in an open container after you’ve baked them if you’re not going to eat them in a few days, and then microwave them frozen for 2 minutes and they come out perfect! I bake a bunch and leave a few in the fridge and freeze the rest, since it’s just my husband and me. I never would have guessed it works but it does!
Wow I cook my sweet potatoes at 415-420 degrees Fahrenheit for 1 hour 20 min and then I leave them in the oven while it cools and they are never that squishy. But I also don’t ever cut them in half or in chunks
Yams totally different. 😁
🤩
