Great start from your rest Cam. This is one area I never paid any attention to: training and coaching. . I will take these recommendations from your mate there (steggles, reminds me of the bbq chooks we used plough thru after a day out in the surf ). Looking forward to the series....nice one fellas.
Regarding the last tip I meant to ask this on your video about building your base, but how did you calculate that massive Zone 2 of yours? All that I know how to do currently is do an FTP test to auto-generate each Zone.
Hi Matt, they were zones given to me post a lactate test. The lactate test protocol doesn't provide a tempo zone, which i'm still trying to get my head around. It basically combines zones 2 and 3. The reason why it does this, is because there is no definitive way a lactate test can define when you jump from zone 2 / endurance to zone 3 / tempo. That is why I run off my step test zones. Reflecting, I should have used those zones in the vid! Cam
@@CamNicholls so in your video on that when you said to stay in zone 2 is that really zone 2 and 3ish or strictly zone 2 by normal charts? I ask because the last FTP test I did came in around 240 so 150 ends up being my middle zone 2 target but I find myself constantly wanting to average about 180. Trying not to get carried away with over analyzing this stuff but 1. I'm a data geek and 2. I have limited time during the week and want to get the most out of my training without over doing it.
Would rather scratch the rear mech, the crank and chainset and possibly get dirt in the chain, all sensitive part but won't want to scratch the seat and hood, things that actually don't really damage quickly like that. c'mon seats are padded and so are the hoods(rubber)
So many Cycling Clubs could benefit their members if they followed this advice, alas too many egos get in the way and hills become a smashfest followed by a freewheeling session
@@CamNicholls Cam, I'm in the process of figuring out what action Camera to purchase! There's a couple in mind. The GoPro 7 or Omos. I ride in Michigan on Rail Trails. They are converted Rail road tracks that span all over Michigan. The asphalt trails are a blast and pass through many towns and cities and BREWERIES! I film with my phone currently and I'm really good at it, but it's time for an action video camera. By the way Cam, the first couple songs were awesome, friend! Thanks for your response, friend!

Cam, thanks once again for responding to my UA-cam text. I'm gonna end up purchasing the GoPro 7. It's a solid camera, indeed, but first I have to finish paying off my Dental bridge. I busted a couple of crowns munching on almonds!!! That's right, munching on frickin almonds!!! I had to have additional teeth removed so the dentist could have anchoring points for the blasted thing. Now I sound like Sid/slur my words, from the movie Ice Age when trying to pronounce certain words! 😂 I thought for sure I would have eventually crashed, and knocked out a few teeth while using my phone, recording my bike adventures, but instead it was the frickin almonds, mate, that did me in! 😂 Take care my friend and be careful on those roads.

Junk miles to me refers to going out there without a plan if you’re training for something, as they say in the video, a proper endurance ride takes discipline. You want that power consistently in zone 2 as much as possible, so that means concentrating and avoiding big descents and steep climbs. What you are training for, how much time you have to train (you need high volume for these zone 2 rides) and where in your plan you are (think periodisation) should determine if/how much of this type of training you should be doing.
@@CamNicholls Video from Dr seiler which is pretty compelling. You have to go slow, to go fast. www.canal-sport.fr/fr/insep-training-periodization-deep-root-cultural-heritage-and-innovative-paradigms-2013/insep-ei_13_10_va_pr_stephen_seiler-mov
What kind of training do you do while in-season? I’ve read good and bad things about doing a lot of VO2 max during the season, and that FTP training is the best bet to stay fresh for races. Also read that in-season FTP increases reduces lactic acid, which reduces the hydrogen ions that inhibit the regeneration of Creatine Phosphate (the main compound that fuels the ability to repeat max effort sprints). Any thoughts on in-season training?
Thanks for sharing the insights. The in season training for me normally aligns to the target event. Length/time and required efforts of the event. Then I would work zones 4-7 with efforts surrounding the target event requirements. So that would include VO2 max efforts, threshold ect. For me I love big ring work too. Ultimately, I think it’s what works best for you with training after you’ve tested some different methodologies. Provided it’s come from a good and proven source.
Guilty of most except steady riding and staying that way. I start off slow and stay that way. Hydration may have to be assessed on intensity and weather especially If your nature breaks are too often.
It would be nice to be young and skinny again, so as to ride road bike without being so conscientious about the weight that just won’t go down when your in the mid-sixties. Diet, excercise, just does’nt work at a certain age anymore for me. Keeps me on the far-less traveled roads for better seclusion.
Hey Tomas, thanks for the comment. According to my father you're still young in your 60's, so it depends on the way we look at these things! Good luck with the weight, I know you can bring it down. Cam
Tomas Jay I can’t speak for a 60 year old but with some minor changes over time it will count in the long run. Reminds me of this saying, Things don’t change, if things don’t change. Fitbits are a great way to make yourself accountable for how much calories you’re burning and sleeping. It’s all a journey and it’s never too late. 👌🏻🤗
Strength training is the way to go. Even for running, as you age, strength training becomes even more important to maintain muscle and will help with body composition.
Yes Mark, I agree, however, not everybody’s metabolism is the same. I definitely notice a big difference exercising from when I was thirty years old versus being sixty-five now. It’s much more difficult. And the fat does’nt seem to work off easy like it used to. Dieting is no picnic either. If I did’nt love to road bicycle so much...........

Why do some many people say " Going slow and long" is called "Junk Miles"
Because some people overdo it and it becomes junk. It's important to train your base fitness but don't over-index on it. Cam
