Sadly Edith Jacques had a short life. She died in 1968.

Nicely sung but the conductor doesn't have much of a feel for Massenet....and that last number needs a guitar!
Yes indeed ! But I rather like the slow tempo of the Romanesca antica (however, a lot of the ensemble scenes are taken at a slow tempo, which sometimes is not very effective for the music).
There is a good movie/opera recording of this opera with Xavier Depraz as Don Quichotte, Henri Bedex as Sancho and Andrée Gabriel as Dulcinée... but it has a lot of cuts for such a short opera !

Thanks so much for this. In spite of the cuts, especially affecting Dulcinee's music and even including her opening number, it was very well done. Loved the hyperactive chorus....and the donkey, of course! Who was the conductor? Pierre Dervaux's father?
@@griselidis1 Yes, it could have been ideal without the cuts. It is a pity they haven't recorded Denise Scharley in extended extract of this opera, she must have been terrific in this role (as must have been Lucienne Delvaux, the belgian contralto)
Pierre and Georges names don't share the same orthographe and they were only 15 years appart (Pierre Dervaux, 1917-1992 and Georges Derveaux, 1902-1977). Germaine Cernay (Mezzo) and Germaine Corney (Soprano) were in a similar situation, often being confused.
