I was told you never use a petroleum lubricant. You use silicon spray???

Another guy used a thick lithium lubricant on his hinges... Is that recommended? Or should we be using petroleum spray?

I have a basic question. I live in the snow belt (Michigan). I recently had to replace a basic 4-panel 2-stall garage door because the bottome panel had become damaged by rust. The rest of the door was perfect but I had to replace the entire door. No matter how careful I was to shovel snow away from the door, it is impossible to prevent moisture from causing rust. Is there anything that I can spray or apply to the bottom panel to prevent rust? It is a basic painted steel door. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

Whether it’s car body or a warship, exposed bare steel is going to rust. Basically, the steel has no paint or weather protection, and rust on steel is like cancer, speaking to the good parts. The bottom portion of your steel door needs a protective layer, no exposed area. Start with 2 layers of primer, then a top coat to the color you want, and keep repainting. Once rust starts even just one spot, you have to sand to bare metal or the rust comes back underneath to the surface. A car body shop sands to bare metal.
