Good composition in woodland photography can often be complicated and challenging, so I thought it would be useful to talk through one of my recent photos from a local woodland and give some tips along the way. I then complete the process by going through my photo editing process in Adobe Lightroom and finally printing the image on some Fotospeed matt paper.
As I mentioned, Meg has been very well so we've not been out much in recent weeks. She had a lump removed from her leg which thankfully turned out to be a benign tumour. She's now fully recovered, happy and loving life again :-). We're looking forward to a lot more photography and filming as we transition into autumn!

Superb video, no-one does woodland better than you.
Much appreciated, Colin :-)
Very nice. I really enjoyed seeing your whole process from field to print. Also, the tips you included will come in quite handy - I’ve been struggling with my images being too dark. Thanks again, and keep up the great work.
Many thanks, Greg. Glad you enjoyed it :)
Great vlog this Simon, really appreciated the insight to your e2e workflow. Good to see Meg back out too 😊
Great tutorial video Simon, that's a lovely image you took in July. I've started using Capture One for my Fujifilm images, its a great piece of software but it puts extra steps in my workflow.
Thanks, Malcolm! I've been using C1 too but I've a lot to learn. It's certainly better for Fuji files.
@@SimonBaxterPhotography It certainly is. I get a much more detail without it looking artifacty, and about a stop better dynamic range than LR . I've only bought the Fujifilm version, so Canon is still all LR.
Great episode mate. Lovely start to a Sat morn.
Cheers buddy! Much appreciated :)
This was a masterclass in landscape photography, thank you.
Another great video Simon. Please keep these coming, informative and full of plenty learning points. 👍
Thank you, Chris!
Very enjoyable video. Keen to get out in the bush but the NZ undergrowth is quite a lot denser. Was the final print A2 or A3?
The one I showed was actually A2. Thanks :)
Oh, there's Meg... And that photography guy:) Seriously, the best video I've seen in a long time! I've been in kind of a slump lately, but after this video it's of to my local woodland. Thank you for the inspiration:)
Much appreciated! Glad it helped :)
I feel like this video changed my life. it answered quite a few little questions for me that added up in a big way. good job.
Thanks for showing us your editing and printing process. I’d be up for an in depth video on printing. For example, I see that you print from Photoshop rather then Lightroom. Also interested in your method for output sharpening for print.
Meg is absolutely gorgeous - woof! 🐶
Fantastic video Simon, brilliant vlog and amazing composition. So nice to see your thought process from start to finish! Hope Meg is all well!
Thank you very much! Meg is 100% now :-)
As someone who is new to woodland photography, it is great to watch your process from start to finish. It was interesting to see how you develop your image in lightroom and the final print looks superb. You are an inspiration Simon.
Thank you very much, Stephen!
Many thanks, Simon, for sharing your video, together with your very helpful commentary.
A really good and informative video from you!
I watched the whole video and I have to say that it's always nice to see the thought process of different photographers because you can learn a lot!
Good Job
I notice you have the tripod extremely high which I understand why but how do you focus? Manually or auto?
Your videos are so inspiring and make me want to into the woodlands in my local area of British Columbia. keep inspiring and keep producing the long beginning to end videos.
Thank you very much, Mike :-)
Another fantastic video. Editing videos are not boring though. I have always thought that there was some form of black magic in your editing so it is nice to see it from start to finish and what great results!
Thanks, Alistair. No black magic :) In fact, there was more editing in this shot than most of my images.
Enjoyed the video as always. I found the editing process very helpful
Very informative and stimulating to see the whole journey from scouting to print ...more like that please!
Really Interesting seeing your process on this image. Lovely Photograph.
I normally switch off straight away when we sit in the classroom NOT because I don’t want to learn but because I just can’t take it in and remember stuff. On this time I sat through your hole video love your work some of if not the best forest work out there amazing
Many thanks, Paul! Glad you enjoyed it :-)
Very nice images and interesting post processing technique. I'm glad Meg is up and around and feeling better.
Thanks for a great video Simon, very informative... Do you mind sharing where you go for frames.. Thanks
Hey, Simon, I absolutely loved the video as always, thanks for uploading such great stuff!
I just want to ask you one question, do you think that the calibration of the SpyderX is a lot better than the Spyder8's?
Hi Thiago. Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. Hmmm, I can't see I noticed any noticeable difference compared to the Spyder5Pro, tbh.
@@SimonBaxterPhotography Many thanks!
You got just ONE thing wrong, Simon, that seeing the editing can be a bit boring... For me at least, that is the absolutely most exciting part bar none. Totally invaluable. I could watch it all day long! Lovely photo as always. Cheers!
As ever so much love and enthusiasm is shown, which produces a wonderful composition which most of us probably never see. Excellent detailed video from start to finish. As ever my wife send her best wishes to Meg, a video without her is just not a Simon Baxter Video. Made my day watching this, thank you.
Thank you very much, Martin :-)
Meg looks well
Amen! I hate squandering sensor area. But, I very seldom use standard aspect ratios except for portraits-sometimes. My framing of landscapes and cityscapes are determined by the subject. * Downside up doesn't work for me. I lose my orientation and can't make heads or tails out of the image. * Spider X works well for me too. * I used some mat paper until I found Hahnemuhles's pearls, and Canson's luster and semigloss papers. l Also! I've been experimenting with the Orton effect on some portraits. It looks good in some applications. I first heard about the Orton effect from your videos.
Excellent thanks for sharing I personally love editing tutorials not being very techie I find them very very helpful indeed thank you I inspire to be half as good as you
Hi Simon I am a big fan of your photography and volg which you present here. I see that Joe Cornish has a big impact on your photography and the entire creative process. You have to learn from the best. greetings and waiting for the next episode. Christopher
Thank you. He was certainly a big influence in the beginning and I very much enjoy our outings and conversations. These days I try to carve my own path to ensure I'm true to my own vision :)

Of course, your photography is one of a kind, I have been observing it since your first episode on UA-cam, and that is why I respect you very much and I watch your videos with great attention (despite my poor English). You yourself are an inspiration to many many people. Thank you Simon
Ouhhh, please tell us where you actually focused? Where and what focusing settings you are usually use?! Really appreciate your help! Thanks 🤔
Hi Simon. Would you be kind enough to share what type black photo box you put your prints in and where I can buy them? Thanks in advance.
Who said you have to sit and close your eyes to meditate. This whole process of yours seems very spiritual to me.
I started photographing a little over 60 years ago with film, of course. So, getting everything right in camera is ingrained in my thinking and work flow. The end result is better for this work flow.
Enjoyed that a lot, just a small touches and not over editing.
That small amount of Orton effect I think I learned from Thomas Heaton, and he was saying that he learned from someone who loves woodland Photography, I think he was talking about you 😅. I love it too and make it but as you said just a little bit and not over applying it.
Thanks for sharing ✌️🙏
Many thanks, glad you enjoyed it! :-)
I don't think they do it the same way though.
Great content. Love your channel. Greetings from British Columbia, Canada
Great idea with the drink bottles, you respect nature so much 👍🏽
Many thanks. It's the gift we need to give back to :-)
Lots of nuggets there to take away, good stuff 👍
Cheers, Simon!
Excellent
Love this I made, thanks for sharing your work and edit flow.
Beautiful composition and work ( as always ) ,it push me to make always better photos . Glad Meg is Ok.P.S. I've ordered the bottle .
Fantastic! Many thanks for ordering :-)
I learnt so much from this video. It is amazing Simon. Many thanks
Always looking forward to your videos.
Glad you are back and Meg is doing well.
Super another video. 👍👍👍👍
The way you approach your photography would suit you going to a large format film set up. Not a popular ideology once you've fallen in love with what digital offers but as far as photography as a craft offers I think you would enjoy the process.
I'm inclined to agree, to be honest. Maybe Ben Horne will convince me :) Although the size and weight would be an issue for me.
@@SimonBaxterPhotography Offer Thomas a bargain price on the Intrepid he never uses and publicly shame him into giving it up for cheap...!
How did you know where your edges would be while in the field. I have to guess at what size image to capture and then crop during my edit.
Simon, I think different photographers go different ways for that. I for example listen hardly to my emotions, when I'm out in the nature and see the scene then through MY eyes :) So I know already out there how I'll roughly process the image afterwards.
But there exist definitely more right answers, more possible processes. Thank you for telling your way in the video and: Amazing photo by the way ;)
Of course there is no right or wrong way and everyone should approach photography in whatever way suits them. However, it's often the case that emotion plays a bigger role in people's work than they perhaps realise. Being more consciously aware of your emotional connection most certainly helps - particularly in complex environments, such as woodland.
@@SimonBaxterPhotography Yes, definitely. From my experience I am convinced that the emotions play a MAJOR role - unconciously, but they can be triggered conciously. This is why I will gently start to talk about this in my coming videos.
Great video, Simon! 'Always interesting to hear other's discussions of composition and editing style & workflow.
Your videos won’t play. Bummed.
I know this was posted a while ago but thank you!!! Really like all the info!
That`s a great video!! Whar the apect ratio before you did printing?
Welcome back! Wonderful video. Glad Meg is doing better!
Very enjoyable Simon particularly hearing your thoughts on composition and framing. Glad to see Meg is doing well too
Many thanks, Scotty :-)
So happy Meg is well and thank you for another great video.
Thank you for these videos I am learning ☺ nice dog
another cracking video simon, really enjoyed your editing and what you do to stamp your very own style.thank you for letting us see this.look forward to seeing more video's like this again, great develpment of your channel to include this.thank you.
Thanks, Derek. Pleased you enjoyed it :-)
as ever tremendous stuff.
Cheers, Gregatron! :)
Very good Simon. Just curious, is there a way to set the 4 by 5 aspect ratio in Sony cameras?
Many thanks! I'm afraid not but I wish there was. The grid pattern does the job though :)
Beautiful photo Simon. I'm so glad you cloned out that branch....it was bugging me through the hole video.
Great to have both you and Meg back. Really interesting video. Always wondered how you managed to get that unique atmospheric look to your photos. Beautiful.
Thanks, Barry :-)
Very sorry to hear that Meg hasn't been well. So glad to see you both back. Thank you for the editing info. Beautiful image. Looking forward to more videos.
Many thanks :-)
Beautiful image Simon, and great to get this insight into your thought process.
Thanks for showing your editing process, and glad to see you and Meg back.
Enjoyed the editing and printing process thank you.
Excellent video Simon. Pleased to hear that Meg is fine after an illness. Really enjoyed your thought process. I keep forgetting to edit on a white background. It's an age thing you understand so I'm now going to alter my preferences in LR and PS to correct that. LOve thos water bottles. May put one on my birthday list.
Many thanks, Martin! I hope someone buys you a birthday bottle ;-)
Hello Simon, that was quite remarkable, such an ordinary scene, which became an image of quality ...
Hi Allan, That's very kind - thank you!
Simon Baxter Furthermore, I must point I liked the various tips on processing which I will adopt...
Really excellent video and a great final image.
Outstanding video!! A Simon Baxter creation from start to finish is a whole lot of insightful information. Best 20 min education I ever received. Thanks, really enjoyed it and so great to see Meg back out in the field!!!!!!!
Thank you very much :-)
Thats what I call a good learning curve for anybody who is interested in photography, no matter how advanced you are there is something in this video lesson for everybody. I see many photography video's on here and most are very enjoyable, but to see a somebody do a shoot from start to finish. I often wonder about some photographers whether they actually print any of their pictures at all, which seems a pointless exercise. Well done Simon, that was most enjoyable...
Much appreciated, Des. Thank you :-)
A pleasure to watch... thank you
This is the first video I've watched of yours Simon, really enjoyed it, love your approach, subbed straight away, thank you.
Thanks for watching! Hope you enjoy the rest :-)
What a great all round video….👍
Absolutely loved this Simon. That photograph is stunning, and you had me watching from start to finish.
Thanks 👍
That's great to know, Ben! Thank you :)
Excellent video. Thank you so much. I don’t find editing videos boring at all and I enjoyed watching you create the final result. Glad Meg is well again.
Than you very much! I'm glad you enjoyed it :-)
More of these please and thank you!! 🤗😁
Really useful to see your working process and thoughts as you edit, cheers 👍
Thanks for a great explanation of how you put this comp together especially to consider aspect ratio and getting it right in camera, now I have even more to think about and experiment with!
Good to follow your workflow too Simon.
Thank you, Carl!!
Great video Simon. Interesting to see how you go about taking your shots when among so much chaos. Hows Meg doing? Hopefully all good.
Many thanks, Steven! Meg is good thanks - back to 100% and entertaining client ;)
Love it, learned a lot here, especially enjoyed the editing part.
one can learn a lot just watching this closely a few times.
Welcome back Simon. ...good to see you after long gap.
Excellent video and beautiful image. I really liked the thought process you described in the field and how you decided on an aspect ratio and composition. The editing session was also very insightful (not boring at all) and clearly shows how you edit for your style. Thank you!!
Many thanks, Larry. Glad you enjoyed it :-)
Great stuff Simon , very much enjoyed that . Nice to see that Meg is ok . Lovely print
Thank you, Andrew :-)
Thanks for sharing these insights Simon. Enjoy the understated style your bring to your images and channel and how you stay true to your principles. 👏
Thanks, Warren. Much appreciated.
Simon-- Thanks again for the education from start to finish. Composition is challenging for me and this helps greatly and is saved to my library. Glad I stayed to the end to see Meg chomping away and dashing toward camera. Made me laugh! Thanks also for the recurring planet health awareness focus as well. Best to you and your loved ones for health and happiness!
Many thanks, Michele! Glad it was enjoyable and useful. Thanks again and all the best :)
Fantastic work, Simon!
Always an inspiration. Great video and beautiful image! Glad Meg is back in action!
Cheers, William. Always appreciated!
An exceptional tutorial! I so enjoyed seeing the entire process from the envision to the print. Thank you Simon and love to Meg. Be well.
Many thanks, as always, Linde :)
A bit longer run time but fully worthwhile. Thank you for sharing this with us. Do hope that Meg makes a complete recovery from whatever has been bothering. Her energy seemed a bit lower in this video.
Thank you. She is fully recovered but she had to be on the leash near the photo location because of a nearby drop :)
An excellent video Simon.
It's always interesting to see other artists "from concept to print" method. Not all that dissimilar to how I work myself when working on landscapes, but the subtle differences are what give your images such impact!
Those stainless bottles are a beautiful piece too, I'll be looking to order one soon!
It's good to see Meg out and about again too. I've got two Springer Spaniels and when they're under the weather it breaks my heart.
Keep up the great work Simon, I love following along!
Thank you very much, as always, Gareth :-)
24:45 I think this photo has a religious element in it.
Great video Simon! And another great example that you are a very skilled woodland photographer!
Many thanks, Tomas :-)
Yor processing of a already great Image, made it to a first class print. Great video Simon. Btw, nice to see you and Meg in the woods again.
Many thanks! Glad you enjoyed it and seeing Meg :)
I would have tried to get rid of that straight sapling in the middle which forks at the top. IMHO, it is too obvious and clutters the middle.
You mean the birch tree? I wouldn't entertain the thought of trying to edit it out. If I thought it was a problem then I'd simply not take the photo. You have to embrace and work with imperfection in woodland. Photography isn't about butchering reality to fit our own illusion of perfection, IMO.
It’s great to see you and Meg back out in the forest. Thank you for sharing your thought processes from beginning to end - I learn so much every time I tune in.
Thanks, Chris :-)
Another excellent video Simon. You don't mention Sharpening, you leave it a the default Lightroom setting or even reduce it. ?
Thanks, Daron! Yes, I leave it at the default input sharpening :)
Great Job!! thanks
more like this would be just fine Simon.
What is the reason to merge two layers (at 20:47) if top (blurred) layer has "Normal" blend mode and opacity 100%? It looks redundant.
