DIY Butterfly House & Black Swallowtail Butterfly or Parsley Caterpillar

  • Last year I found 4 big caterpillars on my parsley (I called them worms in the title because of the length of text for the title). I learned they would eventually turn into the beautiful Black Swallowtail Butterfly. They are also called the Parsley Caterpillar. If you look closely at your parsley in the spring, you may find these little guys too!!
When I saw three tiny black caterpillars this year, I took them inside and made the video of how they transformed over a time period of about 4 weeks. Enjoy!

I get giant swallowtail eggs and caterpillars from my lime tree and raise them inside. The predator population has grown so much in the past few years; I never see large caterpillars outside anymore! One danger, that I learned the hard way, was putting the cuttings in an open vase. The 'pillars fall off the leaves occasionally and drown. Now I put plastic wrap over the container top and poke holes in it for the stems! No fatalities since! Fun video! Thanks!

Please do point out that they need several hours to pump blood through their wings for the windgs to become study enough to fly...I live in Florida, and our anoles (aka lizards) will come by & eat them in a second if they can't fly yet...

A swallowtail dive bombed me yesterday and then laid some eggs upon my carrots. I only found three of the eggs, but I brought them in and have some parsley plants on their way to me. I’m so excited! Loved watching your caterpillars in action :)

I understand they need time for their wings to really dry well before they can fly. FYI they especially love curley parsley. Absolutely wonderful video. Thank you! 🐛🐛🐛🦋🦋🦋

The parsley is cut parsley, so I had to keep changing it out. Also, those little rascals would not fall into the water. They hang on tight and are actually very difficult to pull off. :))
Hopefully, you will "grow" some pretty butterflies too! :))

Sorry for all the comments but I love this video so much🙌🏻 I love that you didn’t kill the caterpillar and also that you knew so much about it and taught everyone how to do it! We used to do this to us kids and I forgot about it and I forgot those caterpillars turned into such beautiful butterflies! I just ordered some parsley so if I get any of them I’ll be doing the same thing. I liked watching the butterfly get up the strength and courage, and then FINALLY making his first flight.... and then that you went & picked it up was cute too. 😍✌🏼

Oh, I just replaced the "munchedon" parsley with fresh parsley. It is in a vase with water so it stays fresh until it needs to be replaced again. The container (which previously had spinach in it) had a bumpy bottom and I was afraid the vase might tip over, so I leveled it with cardboard (top of an egg carton worked for me).
    Hope this helps. :)

A bunch of these caterpillars were eating parsley I had growing in a big container. There were nine but a big frog came and ate all of them but ONE. There was a big frog in the container and all the caterpillars were gone but one so I'm guessing it ate them. I evicted the frog and last night the last caterpillar went into a chrysalis. I'm going to keep an eye on it and help make sure it gets to be a butterfly. I LOVE THIS VIDEO!!

I didn't realize the predators would take them: I had seven doing well on my parsley in the garden and then suddenly: they were ALL GONE. Could have been birds, skunks, not sure whatever else it could have been. Next time I'll cover their area in netting or perhaps bring the inside. I hope there is a next time:(

    • @triciabyrne7761
      @triciabyrne7761 4 роки тому

It most likely was birds. They will even eat them in the chrysalis stage. Netting or these plastic container or Amazon sells "butterfly houses" for as cheap as $12. Good luck1👍

Hi there, I am new at raising Caterpillars to butterflies. I just started at the beginning of August of this year. I started out with Monarchs and so far have raised and released 25 Monarch Butterflies. I then started collecting Black Swallowtail caterpillars. I have two that formed into their Chrysalis back in late August and hoping they emerge pretty soon. I need some advice, since Fall is only a couple weeks away. I have 10 Black Swallowtail Caterpillars that are basically just now going into their Chrysalis. They started forming their Chrysalis On September first. Do you think they’ll emerge into a butterfly before October, or am I gonna need to overwinter them? I honestly don’t want to stress with over wintering them. I’m not interested in overwintering them this year at least. Yet I do not want to kill them either? What should I do? I have 3 remaining Black Swallowtail Caterpillars left . Should I take them back outside and just wish them luck? I don’t know what to do? Any kind of advice would be much appreciated. Thank you.

I live in South FL, raise monarch caterpillars, and have found that the wasps are so harmful to both the tiny hatchlings and later to the larger cats that miraculously got past them. I even leave them in the habitat for several hours until they flap, and then they go out on to the porch screen for several more hours. I've released them in just a half day and they just sit on a flower anyway, risking everything I just saved them from. An anole ate the abdomen on one drying its wings. Never again.

Does the parsley in the vase have its own roots? Do you block it just in case the cats fall down in the water? I've got 4 anise swallowtails on a fennel plant, however, I've got wasps nearby. I am going to try to rescue them before they get prayed upon by the wasps.

They will eat your carrot tops, and it is possible a bird will eat the worms. You might want to bring them in and feed them parsley, carrot tops, or dill. It does not take them long to turn into a butterfly.

Releasing any butterfly before their wings are fully dry is NOT the right thing to do. They are sitting ducks for predators. If you are going to raise them, give them a fighting chance and release a minimum of 4 hours after eclosing. 🙄
