What absolutely sold me on him as an antagonist was him saying "you didn't value ANY of them." He wasn't angry about Puss just being alive, he was angry about him never *appreciating* and living 8 arrogant lives instead.
such good writing by dreamworks.
I agree. I am still going to ask for fun. Why should Death care whether someone valued his life? You die either way.
The lack of growth really irk’d him. This gift being squandered.
Bro he had me when he not only made puss bleed but made him bleed that shit was insane
it gives the idea that he isn't just pissed off with his existence like any old boring antag; his sole purpose as the villain was to show how valuable puss's life (or, well, lives) really is. notice the scene when he finally saw how much puss valued his last life to the point that he physically fought death right in the face for it, he backed away; it goes to show that he only hunted him down until he learned to value his own lives. i think the whole "i love the smell of fear" is a pretty cool metaphor from the writers that if you fear death all your life, you'll never learn to appreciate it while you're still alive. you'll constantly run away, trying to keep that fear and hold it deep down. that's why he enjoyed it so much whenever puss got scared for his life; he knows that he can manipulate and basically ruin a person's life just by his existence (or in other words, just the mention of death. some people get horrified by the idea of it)
but like in all of our lives, we sooner or later have to confront death. dreamworks W, 10/10.
If this isn't Dreamworks' best antagonist, he's definitely up there 😊
Up there to take him away. 😏
Definitely up there with the Kung Fu Panda villains.

I love it how Puss never defeated Death.... because no one can defeat death, he just got more time.
Such a well written character.
He beat his fear of death
He beat Death. Just not by killing him. If all you see is living and dying then you miss the point. It's about honesty. Deaths expectations were not matching reality. This is the same reason Puss lost at first. In the end Death knew he couldn't kill Puss under those conditions. If he did it would be over a lie. Death is too "Straight up" for that.
He beat death, in the sense where he realized that he should value and cherish his life and not wish for more.
Nobody but Jesus can defeat death
Because Death is not alive!, you can't see him on the map because he's not alive
He wasn’t a villain, never was, he’s a force of nature.
He is an antagonist
@@proisborn Jack Horner was an antagonist, death comes for us all, therefore he is a force of nature.
@@renna495 People use nature as an excuse too much. Death is a sadist. He takes pleasure in the suffering of others yet pushes them to do better while presenting the options. By "nature" most people fail to do such things. Death is a wiser, smarter wolf. That has seen much and learned much. He's a teacher and he knows to play. While trying to get others to do the same. Because if you don't learn to play in the worst then is life worth living in the first place? Death has seen so much he's not even surprised when Puss crawls through the toilet. At which point even a sadist (such as myself) finds Puss too pathetic to kill. Death taught Puss by breaking them down until they were worse then dead. That's when people learn.
As for Jack, he's more one that knows about apathy. He's logical and will brush off a judgemental hypocrite giving into fear and hate when they lose control. The cricket was doing ok until that point. Observation without judgement will go further. If all people do is teach grudges and resentment then that's why Jack exists. they learn it from somewhere. From every "nice" hypocrite that dares to pretend they're innocent. From every fool that dares to pretend they understand when they didn't pay attention. In this Jack and Death have that in common. That hypocrites blind to their own sense of "good" are creating the path of destruction from ignorance. Jack and Death at least mean and intend what they do. And they're done with regret. Done being miserable just because others judge them when they don't even try to understand. Who even asks?
@@Veldazandtea I think you missed the whole speech that he laid out about him being death, he didn’t mean it metaphorically or or poetically or theoretically or in any other fancy way, he’s death. Straight. Up. Which is a natural thing, everyone dies, you can argue in the sense that he was trying to take him early, but you cannot deny that he is a naturally occurring process in everything living, im not saying he is nature, but he is a part of the process of life, he is the end, he is a force of nature in this scenario.
He's villainous in the context of the movie, since he's hunting Puss early
"I was there to witness all of them", and he was actually there during all of puss in boots deaths. Such a well written and creepily cool character.

When death said “and you didn’t value ANY of them” with such resentment.. it was chilling fr. Makes u think about ur life too. Deaths motives are written perfectly, the fact that he’s so angry about the multiple lives and not having valued a single one goes so well with the message of the story. It’s hard not to love the way the film is woven together seamlessly.
The way he says “I find the very idea of nine lives.. ABSURD” he sounds legitimately angry. Such a good movie
When Death said that to Puss, he was right. Puss was so overconfident in his battles and adventures that he never really cared if he died due to his nine lives. I love how the whistle becomes sinister and haunting the more you hear it, but then after the last battle, all the tension from it disappears, it almost sounds nostalgic?
Fun fact: If you listen to them both closely or play them side by side, the earlier whistles compared to the last one are different! Every other time he whistles, it's lower and more sinister, whereas the last one is definitely higher and more of a welcome send-off. I dunno if it was transposed to a major key or just shifted in register or something else, but it's higher nonetheless :D
@@Complexicon_of_a_Startist i saw a comment that explains this so il just paste it here: the whistler in mythology: the further away it sounds, the closer he actually is. And at the ending, the whistle sounded close as he was walking away.

One thing I really love about this that's the mark of an experienced editor, is that the music isn't overbearing and in our face and the clips are perfectly chosen and blended together. There are plenty of videos out there where some genertic epic music is added in that doesn't fit the scenes and it's just so distracting it pulls you out of the moment. In this video your focus keeps getting pulled towards what's being shown to you and you only kinda feel the perfect music in the background that enhances what you are seeing, but doesn't try to changeit. I love that after their final interaction, the death whistle changes in pitch and almost sounds like it switched from a minor to a major scale. The whistle is ominous and creepy the whole movie and it sounds more uplifting and optimistic after Death and Puss’ final battle. Cool little detail.
I keep saying it's like a lullaby! :D Difference is in whether you're ready to go to sleep yet, or not. Whether you feel life is being stolen from you, or instead, that you're finally going to rest in peace when Death comes.
Funny enough, that melody is the one used to present puss for the first time, in Shrek if I'm not wrong
It sounds the same
@@mikatteba225 Nah, I noticed it too! There's a distinct key change in the last whistle compared to the others, like the phrase has a less foreboding tone to it.
Keep a keen ear out for it, and you'll hear it clear as night to day.
@@malevolution7041 I think that's because it's in a different key the last time-A major vs usually G major. A major has two extra sharps, meaning that the notes lean a little higher (F# and Gb are NOT the same note, even though they're the same key on a piano-there's very subtle differences and can be best shown in context), usually giving off a more uplifting tone.
This is the first time we see Puss actually afraid of someone. And out of all of them, it had to be Death himself. It’s poetic honestly.
Just DEATH straight up.
he was scared of shrek
@@AdoptedPoo not to blame him, until he met death himself shrek was the most powerfull being of the shrekverse
Ironic to be precise 😅
couldn't have said it better myself, Trump.
Even if Death claims he is not a metaphor or a symbol, but straight up Death itself. The whole message of the movie works wonderfully metaphorically. Puss, blessed by many lives, was cocky and arrogant, simply because death was not a big deal for him. But at every single new life, he literally came closer and closer to Death. By ignoring Death, and playing around with it, he became extremely close to it. And for once in his whole life he had to not take things as granted, learning that's how you actually beat Death; by enjoying every second of your life.
Nice analyzation.
Well anytime Death is depicted with a body in any story he becomes metaphorical by default, so by stating that he's not metaphorical death he reverts back to Death: The Force of Nature, the thing that cannot be escaped from nor defeated. Which is certainly important to the overall story because if he didn't state it, people might do silly things like theorize how Puss could have beaten Death or something.

This is an amazing interpretation.
"learning that's how you actually beat Death; by enjoying every second of your life."
And for a moment here I thought you had learned the lesson of the movie. Pity.

When this character shows up again its going to break the internet
I love the start of the final fight, when Death says "lives flashing before your eyes?" In this sadictically mocking tone. Puss looking up, smiling, and accepting his fate by saying "no, just one" gets me everytime. Puss knows that that is his last chance. Hes either going to win, or die trying. These two lines alone give you a true sense of character development.
Especially since in the first encounter Death said the same thing to him once Puss was touched by his blade and he ran away in cowardice. That time he knew there was no running so he fought. True character development indeed.
What I really love about that line is that when Death says that line, it shows him with Kitty and Perito. he grew to appreciate the life he has had with them and he stands up to fight for a life he values compared to running away. He found a life worth fighting for.

@@shivin6997 I never implied _Shrek_ wasn’t fantastic; it is. It is an absolute classic that created some of the best memories of my young life. To this day, I don’t think many family films even come within the same galaxy of _Shrek’s_ comedic wit; the jokes still hit just as hard 20 years later.
However… I just don’t happen to be quite as much of a ‘fan’ of _Shrek_ as I am of Dreamworks’ other IPs like _Kung Fu Panda_ or _How To Train Your Dragon,_ or Disney’s films during their 90s renaissance, or Pixar’s late-2000s golden age. As funny as the jokes in _Shrek_ still are, there comes a point I start to crave a different direction altogether, and 2011’s _Puss In Boots_ was where I started to feel a little bit tired of the Shrek formula; the first spinoff just felt like a worse Shrek film when I was already a bit weary. *That’s* why _The Last Wish_ is even closer to my heart than the Shrek films; I didn’t expect to enjoy another film about Puss In Boots, let alone *love* it. The way the first musical number and the monster fight play out is the most energetic opening sequence I’ve seen in a film since 2004’s _The Incredibles,_ and the sheer vibrance of facial expressions, ‘camera’ angles, and overall animation is something I’ve always dreamed of but never expected out of a 3D CGI work, recapturing the kind of snappy yet meticulously stylized energy I so dearly missed from Disney films like _The Lion King_ and _The Emperor’s New Groove_ or Dreamworks’ 2D classic _The Road to El Dorado._ Beyond visuals, _The Last Wish_ perfectly exudes a sense of adventure like the original _Shrek_ and _Shrek 2,_ and flawlessly executes high-energy fight scenes and tackles more serious themes like _Kung Fu Panda._
I can respect your opinion that the _Shrek_ films are superior to _The Last Wish._ But being that Shrek himself hasn’t had a film since 2010, I think you’d agree that _The Last Wish_ easily is the best film Dreamworks has made in the last 10 years and is one of the best animated films of the past 10 years in general.

Death did do his duty, he brought death to Puss's ego.
Imagine being able to say the words "Goodbye death" and it NOT be a family guy skit.
The way that the cracking crystal at 0:47 frames the face of Death in a skull right after he introduces himself, then explodes (seemingly) from the sheer weight of his demonic stare is a touch of class. Paired with that perfect voice acting, this character is an unforgettable villain!
ye i noticed too, also added some small shards as fang silhouettes around his mouth, like a sabertooth cat.
@@Elysia119 You're right, didn't see the fangs! Great visual storytelling.
This is why I love animation. It makes more room for these kinds of details
This movie is crawling with god tier visual storytelling stuff.
Holy shit, That's fucking badass. I didn't notice when I watched it.
I love Death. He doesn't have a "tragic past" that made him a villain. He's not even truly the villain, since taking people's lives is his job when it's their time to go. And he was simply tired of Puss not savoring his lives, and he even seemed satisfied when Puss learned his lesson. DreamWorks is amazing at making stories.
Edit: I came back to this video to watch it again, and I just thought of something. So, as we know, puss has, or had, nine lives, and is now down to one. But how many does Kitty have left?
I've heard people argue about whether Death is honorable and others arguing that he's not because he just decides to take Puss's ninth life. And then I realized that was the point. Death isn't fair. You can do everything right and still die to some stupid thing you had no control over. Death has no principles. He is unconcerned with right or wrong. His only real motivation here is pride. Puss insulted his pride and that's all that mattered here. If Puss acted like he had gotten one over on him, he'd have probably just gone out of his way to torture Puss some more to rub it in.
Because he's not a villain, he's an antagonist. An opposing force to the protagonist. People tend to use villain and antagonist interchangeably, most of the time they are but not always.
@@afqwa423well said
He said he wanted to take his 9th life early because Boots didn't appreciate the other 8. It was not really about being fair or not, it was about being appreciative of the one life you got because you can die at any time. The death character IS fair because he seems to only kill early if you're arrogant and provoke him. Once Boots got courage and was humble he told him ok, live on, but he'll be back some day, of course he will.
Something to note, we've never seen the character before but he says he was there meaning he made himself known to boots to take action himself. So while characters can die on their own like Boots did 8 times, the death character CAN if he wants just come for them himself. So Death itself is at random but a Death persona character is also real in this universe.
@@afqwa423death is the ultimate fairness.
Specifically because it isn’t fair.
It’s unfair to everyone because it can come at any time to anyone for any reason.
You can’t run from it, you can’t escape it, you can’t even really delay it because no matter how hard you try it can take you at any time.
And in the end it comes for everyone.

This line just shows how Puss got humbled in the face of Death. Death's satisfaction was just really Puss learning to live life. Bravo to the writers!
*I came here
Death had zero satisfaction in that moment. His satisfaction was going to come from taking the final life of someone who had nine of them and didn’t value any of them. But suddenly that someone valued their life, and as much as he wanted to finish his hunt, he knew it would go against his moral code as Death. He basically got blue-balled by the whole thing but had to live with it.

Dude rewatching this masterpiece of editing to a masterpiece of a movie gave me chills, death is one of the coolest characters in any film i've seen.
Dreamworks should hire you to make the trailer for the next puss in boots, that edit honestly has trailer quality
The fact that Puss fought for his damn life at the end (something he never had done before), fighting death knowing he won't win but would rather fight because his life now, to him, has value.
It is just something that kept repeating in the back of my mind in that scene: _"He is fighting to live."_
If you don't fight for your life, death comes for you
One of the things death said was "you didn't value any of them" as in Puss didn't value any of his other 8 lives.
In the end he proved to death that he did indeed value his life by fighting for it.
Z
@@davidmdertu1267 Well I would say, It was a wake up call for Puss as he really didn't value his past lives but he started valuing his last one because of "death"

This is now the third video in a row I've watched of yours today... how are you THIS good at editing? I've gotten goosebumps from all of your edits so far, you are underrated!
I absolutely love the little detail of Death's whistle changing from minor to major. It was minor when he was chasing after Puss and preying on his fear, and then it switches to a far more comforting major scale after Puss accepts that he'll meet Death again, but he'll live out his last life gratefully. Its so genius.
It doesn't change to major though
I also noticed this, felt like such nice closure between Death and Puss
u sure?
Death's whistling is actually based on the legend of The Silbón, a legend associated with the Los Llanos region of Colombia and Venezuela.
The whistle is always in major; it shifts from G major to A major. The whistling is disturbing most of the time primarily because it's dissonant with the background music or there is none in the first place. It stops being disturbing once the background music starts complementing it and harmonizing with it.
"Everyone thinks they'll be the one to defeat me, but no one's defeated me yet." Damn, Death's still never been beaten. The writers didn't undermine his unstoppable nature to make Puss look like a hero, they committed to Death as an undeniable force of nature right up to the end.
*no one’s escaped me yet.
Jesus defeated death. He died and rose on the third day! Everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life in heaven! Repent to Jesus, ask him for forgiveness for your sins because he has the power over death and life.

As a Brazilian, I must say, I feel grateful for the sensational job Wagner Moura did dubbing the wolf. His voice fit the villain perfectly. 👌🏼

@@dallastexas8934 When he spoke in Spanish in the film it was impossible not to remember Pablo. Lol
@@dallastexas8934 One sad observation; here in Brazil Wagner did not dub himself. He had a full schedule and could not do the dubbing in Portuguese. Someone else ended up doing the job. So if you want to hear his version, you will have to watch it in English with Portuguese subtitles. :(
I've been saying this ever since I was a kid; DreamWorks can, at the very least, be just as good as Disney movies, if not BETTER. This movie, along with the entire Shrek franchise proves just that.
I don’t think there ever be any doubt they couldn’t make amazing movies on par with Disney. It’s just that like anyone, or any studio, sometimes slumps happen. Sometimes executives don’t want to take risks or care about their audience or trust their creators. And sometimes they do. Disney and Pixar has been going through a slump, where they’ll release amazing movies and then not so amazing movies.
It seems DW might’ve come out of their slump. And when that happens, it elevates the industry as a whole. I’m excited for what DW and the industry will produce going forward
Dreamworks doesn't always hit but when they do, they are the best (How to train a dragon, Shrek, Kong Fu Panda etc)
Shrek the third:
(BTW love Dreamworks movies more than most Disney movies but don't forget that sometimes they make mistakes too)
That’s hilarious that you think Disney is better than dreamworks everything Disney has made has been dog shit unlike dreamworks

Death is honestly one of the best villains I’ve seen in awhile. From the design to the voice acting, he seems so familiar and near yet so unsettling and unconquerable. I felt some form of genuine fear/anxiety the first time I looked at him, his eyes especially.
It's the black sclera (white parts of the eye) along with his pupils turning white whenever there was a flash of light. It gives him a far more unhinged expression, as if he's about to explode at any second. But he never does. He's always in utter control of himself and it's terrifying.
this edit is INSANE, for a moment i was thinking it was an official trailer, i love it
He may be an antagonist in a literary sense, but he's no villain. He's not out to cause harm or do evil. He's an immutable force of nature as old as time, whose simply gone out of his way to teach a lesson.
He's just Death. Straight up.
Blud he overstepped the boundaries of his job specifically to mentally torture and kill Puss for not appreciating his past lives, relishing every second of toying with him.
He willingly made this choice and lesson or not those are still inherently evil acts, especially to push all on one gato.
You can't just say he's not out to cause harm or do evil and then the movie literally shows him causing harm and doing evil bruh. 💀
easter egg at 0:09, you can see that puss has emptied 8 cups, and has his last full cup in his hands. This signifies that puss has lost 8 of 9 lives

The second ‘Pick it up’ was such a great callback, to show how much Puss has grown throughout the movie. DreamWorks and Sony Pictures might become the new Disney and Pixar if they continue making bangers like Last Wish and Spiderverse.
