  • In this video, Tom Mackie provides a landscape photography tutorial covering from capturing a great image to the final processing.
    This 'over the shoulder' video joins Tom on location in Norfolk UK, where he explains the lens he is using and why, the camera settings best suited to his shot and how he uses different types of composition ideas to overcome the bright and cloudless conditions to get the best results using his subject matter.
    Having captured a series of shots on location, Tom continues from his studio to show how he processes images using Lightroom, Zerene Stacker, Photoshop and Luminar 4.
    At the end of the video Tom shares his finished images.
    We hope you find this video useful and as ever, if you have any questions or want additional items covered in future videos, please just leave a comment below.

      It is a great location and we're lucky to have it on our doorstep, for now, as the erosion is working its way to the lighthouse.

      @@LandscapePhotographyiQ Thats a shame about the erosion, I no longer live in the UK, but as kid and into my 30 we stayed in the caravans on the top of the cliff at Happisburgh, so seen the lighthouse close up many times (even had the lighthouse beaming in the the caravan at night, thats makes it super tough to sleep), if they still do it, I highly recommend going up the church tower in the village and going up to the lens at the top of the light house, both have spectacular views. Im lucky to have some great images from both locations. But we always went on holiday to Norfolk and we always re visit Happisburgh and Bacton, in the years before I moved from the UK we stayed in Bacton and enjoyed the chips at Walcot, now in my early 50's I live in Canada. The last time I went to Happisburgh I was shocked to see the life boat ramp was gone and some dodge looking stair case to the beach, this was about 15 years ago now. I have so many pictures from that beach its unreal :) great channel by the way

      Ray, you would be shocked to see the coastline now. That dodgy looking staircase is gone now and there's a sloping gradient to the beach now, but it's only a matter of years and it will be gone as well. There's a WWII pillbox that is on the edge of the cliff now. I think another 20 years and the cliffs will be up to the lighthouse.

      @@LandscapePhotographyiQ Oh wow that has moved fast. Its sad but I'm sure Happisburgh is not alone with erosion along that stretch. Hope to get back to that place some day, Norfolk and Yorkshire was my holiday destination growing up. Happisburgh and Whitby Bay have fond memories of. Thanks for the update.

    Great to see you post production process, however in your video some parts of the tool bars were missing making it a bit hard for us newbies to follow your steps

      Sorry about that, I will pass it on to my production team so it doesn't happen again.

    I noticed you use a hoodloupe. I saw it in your equipment you use. I think I need one for those sunny days too.

    Some great tips Tom.
    Mind you I'm a Camera Raw and Photoshop person with a little Color efex pro (Done sparingly) type of person 🤣👍

      I used to use Color Efex Pro and liked the results except for the noise the filters introduced. I stopped using it as Luminar gives a much better and quicker result.

    Great to see the process from idea to final image Tom. Do you end up printing your final images?

      Glad you enjoyed the video Phil, most of my work is used in publications and products such as calendars, posters and puzzles. I have worked as a colour hand printer in the past printing on cibachrome, Type C and R materials. I used to have my own 24 inch digital roll printer, but to be honest it's more cost effective to use online printers.

    Do you have a method of evening out the sky due to the effect of the polarizer? So many very wide angle shots are trashed by dark sky on one side and light sky on the other.... Another great video Tom!!!

    • @LandscapePhotographyiQ
      @LandscapePhotographyiQ  3 роки тому

      Dave, I know what you mean about the problem of using a wide angle lens with a polariser. You often get a dark blotchy patch in the middle of the sky when using a wide-angle lens. As I mentioned in the video, I generally dial the polariser back from maximum. I also zoomed into about 50mm which helps as well as making the size of the lighthouse larger in the frame. In post, I often use the grad tool in Lightroom to even out the uneveness of the sky. As in my photo, there will naturally be a lighter part of the sky that is closer to the sun which I don't mind. Glad you enjoyed the video.

    Interesting video Tom. Is there a benefit of using Luminar instead of doing a similar edit in Lightroom?

    • @LandscapePhotographyiQ
      @LandscapePhotographyiQ  3 роки тому

      It's down to personal preference, but I find Luminar much quicker and intuitive using AI technology. Have a look at some of the videos I did using Luminar to get an idea.

    Hi Tom,
    I've visited this location numerous times and still love the images I achieve, the sky changes the farmers crops change. I still keep trying to get the milky way over the lighthouse have tried four times now and still not got what I wanted. Great images too.

      Many thanks Steven, I went out the other night for the milky way but it was too misty, though I did get some shooting stars. We're lucky to have such a nice lighthouse location on our doorstep.

    May I ask what function did you use to automatically shoot the series of photos with different focus points?

    • @LandscapePhotographyiQ
      @LandscapePhotographyiQ  3 роки тому

      On the Nikon D850 there is the focus shift shooting feature, though you can manually accomplish the same thing.

    • @williamchen8009
      @williamchen8009 3 роки тому

      @@LandscapePhotographyiQ Did some research, looks like my Canon 5D Mk III doesn't have that function, but yeah doing it manually isn't hard.
