40 years ago I towed my 22 ft ski boat on that road nearly every weekend heading to Apache lake to camp and ski. There were definitely some sketchy sections but it was always passable. If my memory is correct, Fishcreek hill was the toughest section. Anyone have that same experience, memory?
@@sparkymac3320 Nothing more exciting than dragging (or should I say being pushed) your pontoon boat down Fish Creek hill in the days before anti-lock brakes and meeting a Kansas snowbird coming up and he's afraid of sliding off the edge so he stays in the middle of the road. Yes sir, good times.
I remember it, they have a sign for no trailers and 4x4 required now. Honestly tho its not the road to be having lots of big boat trailers on slowing down traffic imo but 4x4 required is a little bit of a stretch unless ita rainy maybe.
Took my Camry from TF to Roosevelt 16 years ago and it was washboard graded the entire way. Nothing wrong with a little adventure in a car, but ya. Stay off this trail people. They relocated the fallen boulders at Fish Creek to another section farther down that requires a rock crawling rig to pass. No turnaround either, so it's back to Fish Creek overlook in reverse for 12 miles.
Just remember there are 13 single lane bridges on that drive. The violent geologic history makes for an amazing scenic experience. That road should never be paved.
I have been taking my 20 foot boat on apache trail since 2006. The road today is in way better shape than it has ever been. There is no reason to keep small boats from being trailered.
Great news that it will open for high clearance vehicles, and appreciate ADOT finding the funds to make it happen. Before criticizing the $33m for the complete reopening of this SR read the plan to see what we get for the money. 250 vehicles a day on average used this road before it was closed. Bet we could find a number of expensive to build SR roads in Arizona that get far less traffic.
This cracks me up that ADOT guy We've been driving that road longer than he's been alive with regular cars. If it had wheels, we drove on it. You don't need a high clearance vehicle. The new generation engineers
That road is a trail whenever it rains there’s waterfalls and floods you’re better off not even taking the road and especially if you’re driving a motorhome or pulling a boat
Hey, this road has always been 'travel at your risk' with rock walls overhead, nothing new just making it a public announcement -- have so very missed access to the northern areas of the Superstitions. Gotta get back there this season.
@@its-andrew-yAwesome thanks. I imagine if it got wet or muddy might be different story. But sounds like the truck should be just fine. Drive carefully and some common sense!
The road should’ve been repaired years ago. It’s unsafe having only only one way IN/OUT to Apache Lake, Canyon Lake, Tortilla Flat and all the campgrounds. In the event of a fire, hundreds of people could be trapped waiting for a helicopter ride. The police have to drive 3 hours through either Globe or the Tonto Basin to respond to Apache Lake, unless they come by helicopter.
You were the one who tried to sue Aqua Net after burning your eyelashes off trying to burn ants, weren’t you? Since we can’t fix stupid, we should at least fix the road for you.

Been thru there many times, and love it, even with the snowbirds plugging up the road. I think it's B.S. that ADOT kept it closed for so long.

Thank you all for the wonderful service to humanity
paid me 15 million i would've taken care of them rocks lol
Some rocks fell on our dirt road, looks like we're going to need $33,000,000 to address the issue.
$33M?...that sounds ridiculous!
Yeah that's pretty wild. If they said they were going make it a two lane road and pave it for 33 million THAT would sound reasonable
FINALLY!!!!! Thank you!!!!!
I truly appreciate the work you all have done to get this back up and running.
Why didn’t you ask the population to chip in…? I know I would have to see improvements.
The road is literally smoother now than it was in the 30 years I've been going down it. It'll be nothing but camrys and teslas in no time.

Does anyone know if they are allowing hiking from the gate to the fish creek bridge just passing that big boulder?
We were not allowed to pass on foot two weeks ago.
