The Book Thief is well hyped and for GOOD REASON. It truly is incredible and has made me snot-nose cry every time I’ve read it. If you haven’t read it already, I would LOVE to see you read it!
YES!!!
YES!!!!!!
I came here to comment this book too, and so happy to see other people already recommending it. Fave book of all time.
Oh brother I have this on my list to read next month and I am scared!
Me too!
You need to read Pachinko!!! Such a beautiful historical fiction
Also a generational story! ❤️
Oh I totally agree! If I'm not mistaken, she has already read it? 🤗
Oooh that’s my favourite!!
YES!!
Agreed. This is the book that made me realize historical fiction is my favourite book genre. The story was so realistic and it was written wonderfully. It made me go through so many different emotions. Not only was the story so realistic, the characters were too. I love that book!!
My favorite historical fiction (and possibly favorite book of all time) is A Thousand Splendid Suns. It's gorgeous and tragic and both inspiring and infuriating, but it's a masterpiece.
one of my favourites too! :) Have you read The Kite Runner, another great one!
@@marijakuncic I loved those 2 books so much as well! Khaled Hosseini is probably one of my favourite author !
i agree its one of my favourite books
IM READING THE KITE RUNNER BY THE SAME AUTHOR, SO GOOD
A Thousand Splendid Suns ripped my freaking heart out! 😭😭😭
The Kite Runner by Kahled Hossein is in my opinion soooo good 💙 perfect historical fiction
hi hi ive read a thousand splendid suns and i gave it a 4 star because it was way too painful so now i have some prejudice keeping me from reading the kite runner do you think i should anyway or is it just not for me
@@Luisa-sl5wj hi Luisa, I would say don't read the Kite Runner if you found A thousand splendid Suns too painful. Both are so so emotional which is related to trauma. If you don't want to feel sad and hurt, then I would recommend reading it!
For historical fiction, The House of the Spirits and One Hundred Years of Solitude are two absolute favs ♡
House of Spirts is on my list
I am aiming for 100 years of solitude as well
Yes! and "one hundred years of solitude" is also a generational story so I think you would love it Noelle!
The House of Spirits is a good generational one too!
I'd like Noelle to read One hundred years of Solitude as well!
My favorite historical fictions are Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, and the Nightingale by Kristen Hannah. I didn't really like All the Light We Cannot See tbh but I know a lot of people do!
I second all three of those recs!!
Yesss the Nightingale
I second these recs!!!
The book thief is such a gorgeous book! Wow! The nightingale is on my tbr!
Read Salt to the Sea a couple of weeks ago and it's one of my favourite reads this year
Middlemarch liveshow could be at the end of August so that people can read it during 2 months if needed 💗
I'd prefer the vlog but August is definitely a better option 🙂
Agreed!! I bought Middlemarch after you mentioned it a little while ago. It’s CHONKY!! I definitely will need a good bit of time to get through it.
Reading Middlemarch is on my list..August best. Would love a VLOG!
Agreed ! Would love a vlog just bc of time zones but definitely in august:)
Middlemarch is on my list as well. August is good.
Book thief is an amazing story narrated by Death itself so I highly reccomend it although it is definitely not a light read
The stationery shop by Marjan Kamali and Pachinko by Min Jin Lee are just beautiful
Yes!!
Second Pachinko
Third Pachinko
A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles is a great historical fiction novel if you haven’t read it!
yesssss!
I second this one! I don't even like the genre, but it's excellent.
Historical Fiction: The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society!!! 📚📚📚 Great book and great movie adaptation!
Omg this book is one of top 5 ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I adore this book!!!!
I actually couldn't get through it. Different strokes for different folks. :)
I’m obsessed
YES PLEASE
Would definitely say The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah is a must read for historical fiction!
she’s read it already!
Yes!!!! I love this women empowerment book!! 💖💖💖
The kite runner is possibly my favorite historical fiction novel ever, it's a really beautiful book full of many descriptions and events that will leave you feeling ever emotion possible to feel.
I LOVED Project Hail Mary! The intricacy of the science details was amazing but written in an easy to read way. I thought it was such a fascinating read!
For historical fiction, it's gotta be The Great Alone by Kristen Hannah. My favorite of hers, even above The Nightingale! (And narrated by none other than the one and only Julia Whelan!)
The great alone! Yesss!
Is it on audible (not the plus catalogue)?
@@user-qu8zs7vs1x Yes! And also on Libby & Hoopla!
I have been wanting to read Middlemarch - this could be my chance! I vote for August!
Mee toooo I’ve just got it !
I'd be up for reading this in August as well!
What is "middle march" about ???
Same!! I've been wanting to read this since spring! I also vote for august :D
I have just bought Middlemarch so yes please !!
The Tattooist of Auschwitz and the other books in the series are really great, and based closely on true stories.
100000%
The Shadow of the Wind is SUCH a good book for historical fiction! Especially if you like stories that go through the generations of a family (in this case multiple families). It is exquisite, heartbreaking, but also heartwarming. Highly recommend!
A Thousand Splendid Suns, The Great Alone, and The Rose Code are my fave historical fiction books of all time!!
Second the Rose Code!!
@@allisonrakowski7271 Just read it and loved it! Totally recommend!
I literally have the Great Alone and Rose Code at my house right now from the library! So excited!
The Shadow of the Wind is one of my favorite historical fiction books! I would love to see a reading vlog for Middlemarch. I’ve always wanted to read it but don’t have the time at present.
I am so there for the Middlemarch read along/book club thing! I’d maybe say everyone try and read it in July and august and then do the live show towards the end of august so everyone has time to read it who’s taking part no matter their reading speed?!?
Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys is an incredible historical fiction💛
Yes, I couldn't agree more!! Between Shades of Gray by Ruta is amazing as well.
I HIGHLY recommend A Tree Grows In Brooklyn by Betty Smith! It’s historical fiction and semi autobiographical. I read it for the first time earlier this year and it’s now one of my favorite books of all time and I think you would love it!
I was waiting for someone to mention Betty smith! My fav historical fiction as well!
The Alice Network is one of my favourite historical fictions and everyone I’ve recommended it to has loved it!
Kate Quinn is so consistently great and i love that one!
It was wonderful!
At Night All Blood is Black by David Diop is INCREDIBLE. Jack Edwards recommended this and it didn’t miss. It’s about these two friends from a small village fight in WWI for France and one friend begs the main character to kill him after being horribly injured. He goes against his wishes and allows him to die a slow, agonizing death, and the story follows the protagonist grappling with the grief and the guilt. It’s so so beautiful, HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
YES!!! The language also was STUNNING!!
Atonement by Ian McEwan and Brooklyn by Colm Toibin are so good, and a perfect fit for historical fiction
The Poisonwood Bible is my fav historical fiction!
Oh man, i forgot about that one, it's been many years since I read it. SO SO GOOD!!
I loved this book so much !!
I am so excited for you to read All The Light We Cannot See!! You'll love it!!!!!!!
As soon as she pulled this one up I got so excited for her future self!
I’m so excited for her!!!!
Historical fiction:
A thousand words for rain
A thousand splendid sun
Kite runner
The ambassadors daughter
The book of lost name
The kommandants girl
The women in Moscow
Crime and punishment
The lost girls of paris
Dragonfly
oh those books of Khaled Hosseini are amazing indeed!
The Kite Runner!
The kite runner!!
They aren't quick reads but Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel and The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro are beautiful and my all time favorite historical fiction novels.
Remains of the day is one of my favorite books of all time!!
The goldfinch. It’s been staring at me from my shelf for over 2 years & I decided now was the time I became a new woman and finally read it 😂
So excited to see the genre-blogs, here are some of my favorites in those genres!
Historical fiction:
The Book Thief (Zusak)
The Heart's Invisible Furies (Boyne)
A Thousand Splendid Suns (Hosseini)
Pachinko (Lee)
Sci-fi:
Kindred (Butler)
The Book of the Unnamed Midwife (Elison)
Flowers for Algernon (Keyes)
Wayfarer series, #2 is my favorite (Chambers)
I love A Thousand Splendid Suns so much ! I’m so happy to hear that it is one of your favorite as well !
I loved Kindred by Octavia Butler!
@@notyvette444 I just read it this year, so good! I just realised it fits as a historical fiction as well as a Sci-fi 😅
Kindred is such a great read
The Rose Code by Kate Quinn is my fav WWII historical fiction of all time
it's SOOO good!!!
I would love a reading vlog for Middlemarch, because I really want to read it this summer. However I have no idea if I can commit to read it in any sort of timeline 😅 other than “summer”
For historical fiction, The Alice Network is incredibly underrated imo :)
So good and underrated
I am BEGGING you to please please please read "Memoirs of a Geisha" by Arthur Golden. The writing is ridiculously beautiful and it really makes you feel like you're in Japan.
Seriously.... look at this writing:
“Was life nothing more than a storm that constantly washed away what had been there only a moment before, and left behind something barren and unrecognizable?”
I think Project Hail Mary is a great time. I listened to it and the narrator is fabulous.
Some of my all time favorite historical fiction books are written by Lisa See, and so far none have topped The Island of Sea Women. It covers generations of incredible women, multiple conflicts and wars, and generational trauma in Korea. It’s focused on the all-female free dive collectives on Jeju island so there’s a ton of ocean and sea life imagery perfect for summer. Highly recommend!
LOVED The Island of Sea Women
Highly recommend anything by Ruta Sepetys for historical fiction! She is an amazing historical fiction author. The parts of history she covers in her books are usually parts that a lot of the world has forgotten about/that are not as well known or covered by the mainstream historical fiction genre. I read her book The Fountains of Silence about Spain in the 1940s/50s and absolutely loved it!
I'd read Middlemarch, I've done it before also for uni and it's a book I've been wanting to read again for a couple of years. I'd prefer August because of the amount of books I planned for June and July.
Before the coffee gets cold was one of my fav reads of last year. I cried so much reading it ♡
Sci-fi Rec: ‘Watchers’ by Dean Koontz. The characters are 🤌🏼 especially the dog. Trust me lol.
Hi Noelle!! You should definitely read any book by Kate Morton (especially “The forgotten garden” and “The lake house”). Her books are technically historical fiction but they also have the mystery element to it.😊
I second the lake house! Haven’t read the other one (yet!)
I wanted to recommend Forgotten Garden as well, my favorite.
For historical fiction I recommend “shadow of the wind” set in Barcelona, is mysterious and has a great romantic subplot. Is a book about books, the main character finds the last copy of a forbidden book by an unknown author while someone is trying to burn all what’s left from this authors works.
That sounds soooo good
My 3 fave historical fictions: The book thief by Markus Zusak (there's a reason for the hype, the film adaptation was also fabulous), Next year in Havana by Channel Cleeton (dual timeline: one being during the Cuban revolution), and Once upon a wardrobe by Patti Callahan (new fave of mine, released last year, set in the 1950's and has much to do with the "The lion, the witch, and the wardrobe" by C.S. lewis. This one made me cry).
The best historical fiction I’ve ever read was A Thousand Splendid Suns!!
i had no interest in reading heartstopper but i watched the show and it’s literally so good and cute and now i want the books 😩❗️ the show made me so happy inside
I love the Six Tudor Queens books by Alison Weir! My grandma loved the Tudors and I’m so sad I didn’t get to share them with her before she passed :( so now I’m here hoping I can spread the word about them to anyone who might like the Tudors!
The Book Thief is absolutely incredible, highly recommend that one. I also love A Gentleman in Moscow, Devil in The White City, and Pachinko (but I’m pretty sure you’ve read this one).
For historical fiction I highly recommend "The Miniaturist by Jesse Burton", set in Amsterdam in 1686-87; there is a mini-series TV adaptation and the sequel for it is going to be published later this year! 💕
Definitely recommend Atonement for a good historical fiction, also the movie is spectacular!
Oh my goodness! Yes! I love Historical Fiction. I just recently found, The Personal Librarian in my local library book sale, and that is the book that I can't wait to start. My favorite historical fictions: The Book Thief, The Nightingale, Before We Were Yours, ALL books by Ruta Sepetys (Between Shades of Grey, Salt To The Sea, The Fountains of Silence), and Pachinko. Looking forward to the historical fiction vid!
Before We Were Yours, YES!
For historical fiction, I cannot recommend Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein enough! So far it's my top read of the year!
yes yeS YES and the audiobook is great as well!
Some of my favourite diverse historical fiction books are:
- The Mercies by Kiran Millwood Hargrave and Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo (both are sapphic and the last one has a Chinese American main character)
- Everything by Sarah Waters but especially Fingersmith or Tipping the Velvet (sapphic too)
- Tin Man by Sarah Winman (gay)
-The watchmaker of filligree street - Natasha Pulley (gay and bit of steampunk)
and I love everything by Ruta Sepetys and the book thief but those were already mentioned a lot
Yes to Last Night at the Telegraph club!
I second the mercies 🙋
Tipping the Velvet is so memorable to me! Sapphic, but also the grittiness of Victorian London - give me more of that!
fingersmith is amazing
The island of missing a tress is a historical fiction I read this year and fell head over heels for!
i’m planning on reading A Little Life FINALLY… i’m an english major so during the year i have absolutely no time to read for pleasure, especially a book that long
Fates and Furies is absolutely devastating for so many reasons!
All the light we cannot see is amazing
Wolf hall - please read the trilogy! The first book can be hard because there’s a lot of internal narration but it’s truly an incredible series
best historical fiction book i've ever read, in fact the best book i've ever read at all, is The Binding by Bridget Collins. the time period isn't specified but likely mid-1800s. the less you know going in the better, trust me. also it's magical realism.
I HIGHLY recommend ‘Hot Milk’ by Deborah Levy. It’s a short lil thing but it’s one of my favourite reads so far in 2022. It’s so summery and set near the sea. There’s also a stolen fish 🤷🏻♂️ it’s a dark take on mother and daughter relationships and it’s about wanting more out of life. ITS SO GOOD
Yes yes yes! Swimming Home is also a good Summer Levy novel.
Love all the historical fiction recs! Some I love are Burial Rites by Hannah Kent, Pachinko by Min Jin Lee, Peach Blossom Spring by Melissa Fu, and of course The Book Thief. Also loved All the light we cannot see and currently reading Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr.
came here to say Burial Rites!
Historical fiction recs: The House of Spirits, The Shadow of the Wind, Cloud Cuckoo Land, The Beautiful Ones
Totally second Cloud Cuckoo Land, especially if you enjoy All the Light We Cannot See as they’re both by Anthony Doerr!
All The Light We Cannot See it's one of my comfort reads. I read it with a friend and it was pretty amazing! I loved it so much, it was such a good read, really emotional!
A reading vlog for Middlemarch would be fab, because I don’t want to read it, but want to see you read it 😅❤
I definitely vote for a reading vlog for Middlemarch, but that's purely for my own selfish reasons 😂 I know I won't make it to the live show, but I can watch a reading vlog any time.
What the Wind Knows! It's a time travel romance set in Dublin during the Easter Uprising of the early 1900's. The romance at the core was absolutely beautiful and overall it's reminiscent of Outlander, so if you enjoyed that I think this will be right up your alley.
Not sure if you’ve read it or not, but Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon is one of my favorite historical fiction books.
Favorite historical fiction - The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek
I’ve had Seven Days in June on my tbr because of your recs… I’m determined to get to it by the end of this month!!
It’s absolutely amazing! enjoy!!
HIGHLY recommend One Hundred Years of Solitude…one of my all time favorite books. And I can’t remember if you’ve read Beasts of a Little Land but it’s incredible, I think you’d love it based on your love of Pachinko!
YES to One Hundred Years of Solitude. That book is always in my brain and I read it years ago.
Historical fiction recommendation: The Light between Oceans.
Noelle, please please please read it. It's fabulous and very emotional. Tears alert.
I would prefer a Middlemarch reading vlog over a livestream 😚! Technically doing both would also be possible 😉
One of my favs to this day is “The Danish Girl”, pretty famous for the movie but I don’t see a lot of people talk about the actual book! It’s based on the life of the real Lily, but it reads like fiction and since it’s June… you know 🥰💕
I am one of those people that like the great alone more than the nightingale by Kristin Hannah. The great alone is one of the best historical fictions I have ever read
Middlemarch is definitely on my tbr for this summer as well! My vacation is half in July, half in August, so either works!
Also, I just turned on my brand new a/c for the first time about three hours ago, and they have been the comfiest three hours OF. MY. LIFE.
My favorite historical fiction is a blend with romance and with dual timelines, but it's The Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley. It's such a unique time frame. Like I knew nothing about the Jacobites before reading the book and the follow up (The Firebird). And now I want to re-read it. Again. Lol
I've been waiting to read Seven Days In June in June 11 months!!! And I finally did. It was amazing ♥
I´ve been saving Emily Henry´s books for this summer!!
The Nightingale and Lovely War are my two favorite historical fictions that I always recommend!
For historical fiction, I just finished The Stationery Shop by Marjan Kamali and absolutely loved it!!!! Another favourite is Next Year in Havana by Chanel Cleeton
I also just read The Stationery Shop and really enjoyed it!
I JUST READ "BEFORE THE COFFEE GETS COLD" AND IT IS SO GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD you're gonna love it
500 comments?! Doubtful you’ll be seeing this but, for what it’s worth, I wanted to suggest what @emmie did when she read War and Peace. She uploaded a reading vlog every 500 pages and also had a live show for the book. I loved this idea because it kept us all abreast with her progress and also gave us space to share our final thoughts. It WILL mean a lot of work for you but, as a viewer and someone who would potentially be reading along, that format really worked for me. Lots of love❤️
Fun fact:
Middle March was out of Brazilian catalog and has been just published in a wonderful crowd funding campaign. We are more than 1.000 readers joining to read it through July and August and there are two UA-camrs doing this project.
It’s not summer here though!
It will be in Portuguese otherwise you could join us :)
If you do read it this summer I’ll be here joining you as well!!!
"Before the coffee gets cold" is so perfect. It pulls perfectly on your heartstrings.
I’ve been waiting all year to read People We Meet on Vacation from a fun summer location… currently reading it from an island in Greece and it was so worth the wait! The ~vibes~ on and off the page have been immaculate 🥰
That is such a fun read! Great place to read it!
Just read a book set in Cyprus that I loved! A Good Year by Polis Loizou
I've just finished All Systems Red by Martha Wells. It's fun sci-fi, a short intro to the series:)
I just finished The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes and it was incredible! It's set in 1930's Kentucky and follows 5 women, from different backgrounds, who run a library that deliver books by horse through the mountains. I would definitely recommend it! (check trigger warnings)
The House at the Edge of Night is my favorite multi-generational historical fiction. It's great for summer because it is set on a small Italian island and is also about how stories are passed down and bring us together.
The Book Thief
Favorite historical fiction for me is Pachinko! What I am really trying to read this summer is Legends and Lattes.
Ruta Sepetys is the queen of historical fiction! I’ve loved every book she’s written. If I had to recommend one to start with, I’d say “Salt to the Sea” or “Between Shades of Grey”.
I DNF’d “All the Light We Cannot See”. Just couldn’t get on board.
My favourites:
The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende
Orlando by Virginia Woolf
Girl with a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier
I look forward to seeing the Middlemarch reading vlog - I won't have time to read it this summer, I'm afraid!
Fingersmith by Sarah Waters & The Pillar of the Earth by Ken Follett, are the two historical fiction books I highly highly recommend
i’ve been wanting to read Middlemarch and bought a used copy a few months ago! A reading vlog or live show would be great because it will motivate me to finally get around to it! i think the end of august is the best time :)
You can’t go wrong with a reading vlog plus I won’t be able to read it :(so would love to see what you come up with when you say you’ve got ideas!! :)
Excited to hear your thoughts on All the light we cannot see, absolutely adored that booked. I do love historical fiction and some of my favourites are The Nightingale which I know you read, Ths book thief, The kite runner, The huntress, Hum if you don't know the words, Burial rites.
I would love to read Middlemarch with you since it’s been on my tbr for so long!
As historical fiction I can really recommend the Mercies by Kiran millwood Hargrave! Based in Northern Norway in the seventeenth century, it is about the witch-hunt there. There are also queer characters in the book, and some well written romance!
Middlemarch has been on my shelf for sooo long. A livestream would be amazing.
I just finished "The Stand-In" and I LOVED IT. I'm glad I picked it up, despite not seeing/hearing too much about it. It was super cute and touching. My mental health has been a hurdle lately, and this book also helped with that, being both light and meaningful.
for historical fiction - Code Name Verity. I love this book so much. It is told in two halves by two female friends in WWII.
