Sorry guys but Mariah and Whitney could not come close to So Hyang. So Hyang did this arrangement with her team. This program is called Imortal Songs 2. Top Koean singers are invited and give a category to sing.
So Hyang is a devout Christian and gospel singer from South Korea. In her early 20's and newly married, she was diagnosed with early stage uterine cancer, which left her unable to have children. After being completely healed by God and her doctors, So Hyang's goal has been to use her voice to bring comfort to people who are experiencing difficult times. She IS NOT motivated by either money or fame. She has rejected numerous offers from major record labels. In addition to being a published author of several fiction books, she lectures about singing and vocal techniques at a South Korea university. So Hyang, her husband, and some assistants, arrange every aspect of her live performances; the music, backing vocals, staging, lighting, etc. She can sing all genres of music from ROCK to RAP (YES!!, she is a BADASS rapper).

I forgot to mention that during her cancer surgery two decades ago, So Hyang needed a blood transfusion. However, the blood received was contaminated, resulting in her contracting hepatitis B or C. This has made So Hyang suseptible to pneumonia. She has battled severe pneumonia eight times between 2016 - 2020. She has performed several times while not fully recovered from pneumonia and against the advice from her doctors because she did not want to disappoint the audience. Her technique is rock solid because the performances were still master class worthy.

I love watching Reactions when the re actors have no idea that they are listening to one of the best female vocalist on planet Earth. Many would say that she is the best( myself included) female vocalist on planet earth. The thing about So Hyang is that she is more than a singer. There is a spiritual aspect to her that can not be denied. The more that you listen to her the more you will find this aspect to be true. 김소향 (Kim, So-hyang) is a South Korean singer who uses 소향 (Sohyang) as her stage name. She's up there with Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Céline Dion, according to David Foster, who worked with all of them, plus other big names in the music industry, such as Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand, Stevie Wonder, and Michael Jackson. In fact, many vocal coaches and critics call her the Queen, and Dimash the King.

BTW, Whitney's former manager saw the DMC Festival video of Sohyang singing "I Have Nothing", and contacted Oprah Winfrey, who in turn, contacted David Foster. They were all amazed. Foster invited Sohyang to sing on his tour in Asia. She did 8 shows in 4 days in Tokyo. He and his ex-wife wrote that song. He co-arranged and produced it for Whitney for her album, and her performance in "The Bodyguard". Foster has won 16 Grammy Awards, including 3 for Producer of the Year, and has been nominated a total of 47 times.

Her full name is "김소향 (Kim, So-hyang)", but she leaves out her surname in her stage name, "소향 (Sohyang)". Here's the breakdown of the Hangul symbols in her full name:

Google Translate in Detect Language mode pronounces them decently. However, the proper pronunciation of her stage name can be heard before the start of her Immortal Songs 2 performance of "Bridge Over Troubled Water", when the host introduces her as "SOH hee-yahng". The "hee" part is very quick and subtle, almost like a puff of air after the "h" sound carried over from the stressed "SOH" syllable. Note that the "ahng" sound uses the first and last phonemes (syllable components) of "awe" and "song", respectively; it isn't "uhng" or "ohng" as too many non-Korean folks claim.

I am a big fan of music and legendary singers like Celine, Barbara, Whitney and Mariah. Even So Hyang grew up idolizing these same singers also that's why you hear some similarities when she sings. I will say this, So Hyang is the only singer that I heard could get me to become emotional whether it's goosebumps or tears and sometimes both at the same. So in my opinion, she is the best singer I have heard in my lifetime.

I love this woman's voice. I stumbled on one of her videos a couple years ago and was blown away. Here is my two cents on songs to check out: She's got two popular Whitney covers -- I Have Nothing in 2015 on the I Am [A] Singer Legend show, and I Will Always Love You on the Begin Again show in 2021. On the Immortal Songs 2 show, she Covers Bill Withers' Lean on Me with Michael Bolton judging and also a great version of You Raise Me Up. There are other versions on UA-cam, but the sound quality can be iffy on these. If the view count is in the millions, you probably got one with decent sound quality. A lot of the high view songs are a little older, but she was out a few years due to recurrent bouts of pneumonia. She also has a bunch of songs in Korean that are pretty awesome, but you might want to stick to the English language ones to start.
To us huge fans of So-hyang, we are not surprised that you guys are initial loss for words. It is a common occurrence for the first listeners. Her cover of "I Have Nothing" will leave you in awe! Heck pretty much anything she does willdo that. If you want to hear a gentler song from her look up "Love Poems" she did on a program called Beginagain. You can thank me later.
We all wonder if Sohyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself, with the input of her in-law family and musical assistants, teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks four languages: Korean, English, Vietnamese and Chinese, as well as reading French and Greek!

She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all eagerly worked with her when they were in Asia.
She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. In a South Korean television interview Sohyang conceded that she struggled with her desire for fame for a number of years, going into the basement in her home numerous times and closing the door so she could complain vehemently to God that He was holding her back from becoming famous due to her health problems and other unforeseeable events. Then she later saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her! And whether Sohyang likes it or not, fame has found her, run her over and then backed up and run over her again!

Sohyang is just the most amazing singer, Christian and human being. She is beautiful both inside and out, and so humble and genuine, with a stage charisma, facial expressions and smile that is off the charts.
In Korean dictionaries 소향--Sohyang--has several meanings.
• First is a type of Korean traditional music.
• Second is to burn incense on a burner.
• Third is to go toward.
But these meanings are rarely used today. Sohyang is also the name of a heroine in a Korean traditional novel. Yet for the definitive answer Sohyang has stated in an interview that her name means "enjoy the light." Her grandmother named her.

Well, one more gush. In an interview with a Turkish music producer Sohyang's assistants revealed (a bit to her chagrin, as she is a self-effacing person) that she can hit Eb7 and D7 in practise. However, she never goes above the 6th octave in performances. Since she starts at D3 that is more than a 4 octave range ... so how about them apples???! Oh, I just remembered, she is also a published fantasy novelist and has a theological treatise on the Book of Revelation in print. In addition, she is a very good stage actress, which she proved by playing Julie Andrews’ part in the South Korean stage production of “The Sound of Music.” Moreover, she sang the “Moana” part in the Korean version of the Disney film, does the musical vocals for many South Korean television dramas, and is a talented artist and cartoonist. She taught herself English by watching Disney's "The Little Mermaid" 'about one hundred times' when she was just a kid, speaks English with a _perfect_ North American accent and has an outgoing and bubbly personality.
She can also play the piano and guitar. Is there anything this genius level woman can’t do? Ironically, Sohyang stated in another interview that both she and her in-law family were surprised to discover that she could sing so excellently!
Though she is maybe 5' 4" and only about 100 pounds, Sohyang simply transcends the thresholds of music and takes you there with her. She becomes the song when she sings it, and then re-emerges when she is done. An experience like no other. I don’t know what else to say. I’ve spent _entire days_ listening to her, and shed more than a few tears of joy along the way.
I really must also compliment the choir, orchestra and audio/video production people Sohyang works with. They are all top notch from what I can see and hear, and that is important to note as these are _essential_ elements of any great musical production. The Korean people are easily as talented as anyone else.

Good reaction guys :) You literally just heard the best vocalist in the world; as in the most technically proficient singer. There's obvious subjectivity in whether you like someone's singing style and voice, but the only objective measure you can gauge is singing technique, which she is the best at. Some other recommendations include Lean on Me, I Have Nothing, Arirang Alone, Easy on Me, Everyone (search English subtitles), Dream. Keep up the good work!

The show is called “ Immortal Songs” by the Korean broadcast station( KBS) . You see a lot of great artists give outstanding live performances on the show. including Forestella! Sohyang powered all the way through after she changed her tone to chest voice.
Sohyang is two syllables, "So" Not Sue. Then "Hyang" should have the H and Y blending together.
As to the last sound part being 'ang or oung' I believe it should be somewhere in the middle of these two sounds, but us English speakers have a hard time making the sound so most people say "Young".
But "young" is wrong. "Hyang" has the letter 'a' instead of 'u'. It sounds like "ah" in "awesome".
