It is really frustrating that there are barely any studies on curly hair. So many people have curly hair and have no idea how to take care of it properly, and so end up brushing it out in an effort to make it look 'tidier', but just end up damaging it further and making it look unkempt and messy. If there was more readily available information about how to properly care for curly hair, more people who have it would be able to make it look tidy, defined, shiny and healthy. Of course prejudices will still exist, especially toward people of colour, but if there was more correct education then we may have less people thinking that it is untidy or messy, and more people being able to realise how attractive curly hair is, especially since it takes way more energy and time to groom properly.

Curly hair is purely a result of the form of the root of the hair, not the result of dirt or lack of care.

I got WAY MORE attention from men after cutting my hair to chin length! I cut it just because I thought the style was cute. I was so surprised when more men started approaching me, and now I get a lot of compliments in public - not just people saying “I like your hair” but also saying “you’re very beautiful” in a way I never experienced with longer hair.
I think it’s because I have very soft facial features and a more delicate bone structure that get hidden by long hair. My friend who has more angular features looks incredible with voluminous, long hair, but not me. Basically, if I take the conventional advice that long hair is more attractive, I’m shooting myself in the foot because I have the sort of face that will blend in if I don’t make space for it. It also helps that my hair is thick/wavy, and I keep it looking healthy/styled.
If you think your face might stand out more (in a good way) with short hair but are afraid to lose attractiveness points, I’d advise at least considering the risk because it may really pay off.

    • @brooke9297
      @brooke9297 3 роки тому +21

Also, though, short hair is a "hot girl" hair style at the moment, with loads of people over the past year or so doing the hot girl chin-length bob. If you're young-looking and can already be considered attractive, it'll be great as long as that style is on trend - and maybe after, depending on how it looks and meshes with your style :) .

Shorter hair is seen as more conservative for older people, just like revealing clothing long hair worn loose is often seen as a sign of women wanting to be "sexy".And older women are often stripped from their sexuality in our society. Of interest: in colonial Louisiana, women of colour were required to wear headscarves, because their hair and the more elaborate styles they did were seen as threatening to the beauty of white women. This was present on plantations as well, where white women felt threatened by the hair of women who were enslaved. And so a huge process of *making* Afro hair seem inferior had to occur-it wasn’t automatic, or innate. It was also a trend in the 18th century for white upper class people to replicate Afro hair.

I’m amazed that hair thickness (specifically density and evenness along the bottom) was not further addressed here. Not blaming the creators of the video but rather the researchers. In my opinion it is just as important (if not more so) than length. It is more of an indicator of genes, health, and youth than length is honestly. And that’s across the board, regardless of hair type. Of course, length can add femininity and disguise or distract from masculinity, but I think most people would take a thick, curly bob over long, straight, low density hair with thinning and broken ends. Maybe one day there will be enough research to create a part 2 which further includes thickness and Afro hair!

As a white woman with naturally curly hair I will say, based on my own experience, that natural curly hair and curled hair with an iron gain two different responses. Natural curly hair is still considered "unprofessional" looking and seen as less attractive, regardless of race, while curled hair is seen as very attractive.
My theory for this is curly hair can be more unruly, and it's state is subjected to by the elements, so throughout the day the way your hair looks can change leading to more frizz or expansion, while curled hair has a sleeker appearance and won't change the moment the environment changes and is less susceptible to frizzing. Curled hair also has more gloss to it since the hair is being essentially straightened and then curled by the heat of the iron, laying the strands down flat, while naturally curly hair has kinked and rougher strands which makes the light less likely to bounce off from it.

@@Womenmatter2009I completely agree. A superficial channel trying to explain to people what it is to be considered attractive. There’s a lot of subtility in beauty, and it’s subjective. Some would argue that it’s not, but these are only influenced by society’s standards. If magazines tell us that straight hair only are attractive, these people will all agree that women with straight hair are attractive, but they will change their minds as soon as magazines start shaming straight hair (just an example).
Also, not all studies are to be taken seriously, and some of them are fake studies that are here to reinforce the standard set by the beauty industry (I mean, it needs to control what you perceive to be attractive so you give your money away for products, surgeries and so on).

Afterwards an article came out discussing that, and to summarize it was concluded that we Americans are excited about Lucy Liu's looks not because she is really beautiful (though she is definitely not ugly, I would say she is average/plain looking), but because she is Asian. In other words it's more publicly acceptable to say that she is beautiful than to say that we have a fetish for Asian women. 😬

I think it brought out some of my better features, as opposed to my long hairstyle. Some people also see short hair as 'edgy'. Hairstyles really do bring out either your best or worst features depending on how they're done, and everyone probably has a specific short and long hairstyle that suits them perfectly and that will make them look attractive. I’m a Black woman with a very thick, kinky, medium-length Afro. I tend to keep it styled very simply-crown braid, high or low bun, a styled Afro, and sometimes a braid-out that I style in updos. I straighten it infrequently, and wear it shoulder length with soft waves at the ends.
This is where it gets interesting. I have photos of myself with all my hairstyles on dating apps when I use them. With apps that let users like individual photos, the MOST popular hairstyle is a straight-from-the-sixties beehive look with sideswept bangs that’s one of my go-to updos when my hair is in a braidout. In the photo I’m also wearing a vintage cocktail dress and slightly 60s-inspired makeup. The same photo is the most liked photo I’ve ever posted on Instagram. I wear a less exaggerated version of that hairdo often irl, with scarves, headbands, or decorative hairpins, and it’s what garners the most attention in average urban multiracial settings. I’m talking double takes, jaw drops, free drinks, people thinking I’m a model, and in one instance, a man running down a corridor stopping to say “you’re stunning!” and continuing to run wherever he was going.
TL:DR-There’s a reason why updos/heavily stylized hair have been the most common women’s hairstyles throughout history and across cultures. It’s universally popular and can be made to suit any hair type and face with the addition of decorations or extra hair. I’d love to see this studied.

Since longer hair would generally be considered a yin feature, depending on how straight or wavy/curly it is, shorter styles may suit some of the more yang types in these systems. these videos are so interesting! I find them helpful. As a 29yr old Black American woman, my objective in following this channel is to learn how to be as attractive as possible lol... sounds odd, but is very effective! In my observation, hair weaves never look as healthy/natural as natural hair because theyre too dense and the textures arent natural. Personally, I think I look most beautiful when my natural hair is glossy/moisturized and the thin parts of my hairline are lightly enhanced to appear thicker. I have a widows peak, which is quirky and unique, so i try to embrace it and part accordingly. My profile picture is about 5yrs old when I moved to NYC and began experimenting with half-wigs, which gave me the option to increase the length of my hair while maintaining a natural hairline... the issue with these is the volume though- its just too much hair! Naturally, the hair on my head is THICK! I have a lot of hairs per inch... and so does my Italian/Polish boyfriend- his hair is dense, and even he remarks that I have a LOT of natural hair... although I happen to know that he prefers the ringlets of type 3 hair of latinas. His mom and sister have densely thick wavy medium-length European hair... tbh, I believe he subconsciously knows that our kids would have the hair he finds most attractive, and this is interesting to me! I mean, obviously we date who we date because we love them, like them, are attracted to them, whatever, but scientifically, there are reasons WHY we like what we like

It's taken me so many years of trial and error to make my hair manageable. It's fine, wavy, frizzy and extremely dry. I have found that using a mild shampoo on the roots only once a week is the only thing that works for my hair and to wash the lengths with water only. I use a leave in cream conditioner and serum on the lengths because even water seems to make my hair a little dry after washing. Then I use a small amount of hair gel and I brush my hair with a paddle brush and scrunch it a little. My natural wave pattern forms and I can use a paddle brush a few times that day and it doesn't disrupt it, it simply just untangles my hair. I probably brush my hair 2-3 times a day. I get highlights once a year and that's the only time my hair sees an all over conditioner and shampoo. I don't have to deal with build up because it seems that water just washes the products I use away. For the first time in my life I have smooth shiny hair with attractive waves that is manageable and not breaking off and not frizzy. I tried the wavy girl method and it made my hair have the texture of dry vermicelli. It was also ridiculously tangled because I was told not to brush my hair and use a wide tooth comb. A paddle brush with lots of bristles seems to work the best on my hair which goes against all the commonly held knowledge of wavy hair. Nothing that has claimed to have all the answers has ever worked for me. I have had to find my own method.

personally, i feel like longer hair would suit me bc my eyebrows are short, so it makes my forehead look bigger than it actually is. but with shrinkage, most afro hair appears shorter than it really is. so even at mid back length, it's still "short" 🙁 i guess i'm growing my hair to thigh-length.

You need to get a blunt cut to where it's longer on the top & shorter on the bottom. This will give you more hangtime & make your hair appear longer. I also blow my hair out & then style. Wet setting the hair will make the shrinkage worse. No heat damage as a blow dryer only gets to 150 degrees on low.

As a guy, womans natural hair color is almost always the best. anything that looks unnatural is bad except highlights or colors that look mostly natural and fit with the natural color and hair texture. if you have dark blonde hair, a lighter color or lighter highlights on top look great to me, but I wouldnt like it on a woman with brown or black hair. for darker hair things like silver highlights would still look great to me, but its the only exception. if its an artificial color, it shouldnt look unnaturally uniform, it needs to fit your ethnicity or other facial features like eyes and eyebrows and resemble a naturally existing color.

Anyway since this is the 3rd video he's done on hair, I already know what his answer is going to be. On women with an attractive face it's not going to matter, whereas it will be a boost for women that are not attractive.... Oh and it has to be long and curly. From all the videos it appears length matters more than style or texture.

Interesting video! I'm curious about the history of hair straightening in East Asia. While naturally straight hair is pretty common among Asians, wavy or 'frizzy' hair is not uncommon at all. Sometimes too, Asian women with naturally straight but not 'flat hair' (hair that appears 'wide') will use a straightening iron to make the hair sit flat. Japan even invented one of the most successful hair straightening methods in the world.

And my curly hair is now touching my shoulder. This hair gave me confidence. And it elevated my look. I started getting second looks, wholesome compliments from men and women. I think I will forever stick to curly hair. Sure, most days it's hard to tame. But on good days, I look charming AF, this is me just being genuinely confident.

If symmetry is ideal for biological beauty, why do many people look better with their hair parted to one side or the other rather than in the centre? Does the location of the hair-part have an influence on how we perceive the balance between facial proportions in asymmetrical faces?

In Brihat Samhita, the preferred hair density for men and women in ancient India was very wiry hair since it showed intellect and the sindoor (red vermillion) showed more in ones head. Natural selection in Ancient India might breed the same hair regimes in Indian populations today, with a larger forehead and more wiry hair becoming more prominent.

Interesting video although I absolutely disagree with the statement that we look better with our natural hair.. this is simply not true. Some faces and body types can pull off hair that does or look as tidy.. others look much better with super sleek tidy hair. Alyona from the channel Aly Art talks about this and presents a great explanation depending on Kibbe Types.. and she’s absolutely spot on with her analysis. This also depends on the colouration of skin, eyes and hair, structure, build and essence of the body. I also know this from personal experience.. I know do not look my best in my own natural hair colour and texture however I have learned to understand what looks good on me and what does not.
