Driving Ron! - Project Ron Episode 9
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 жов 2024
- This is it! In the final episode of our build series, Mike takes Ron on a drive down scenic Highway 141 in Colorado to really get a feel for how all the modifications have transformed this car on the street. Don't worry, we also get some time at our local kart track, Grand Junction Motor Speedway, to compare how the performance upgrades feel when pushed a little harder.
What was your favorite part of the build series? Let us know in the comments!

best series for the best miata generation
Thank you, so glad you enjoyed it!
This was a positively fantastic build series and the benefits of each modification were very well explained! I enjoyed it tremedously! Would love to see a similar build series for the ND generation.
Awesome, thank you! We'll keep that in mind when picking our next car!
Would love to see an ITB NA, or turbo 2.5 NC ;)
Awesome series for inspiration! What if you do an Electric conversion Miata? That would probably be controversial and fun 😂
We keep toying with that idea :)
Seeing how Ron followed my NBs build pretty closely I can agree with you on the driving enjoyment and the versatility of the car with these modifications. have the bracing and turbo kit to go still but can see how they will be the icing on the cake for my Lil Hot Rod... Love the series guys you can do more of these please 😄
Right on!
Well put together and thoughtful upgrades. Would have been interested to see lap times on stock vs. modified Ron.
Thanks for the input! Scheduling did not permit that for this series, maybe we can look into doing that for the next one!
ND build series next plesse
Thanks for the suggestion!
I have been an automotive journalist for over 20 years and I have driven so many different types of cars and I still turn to the Miata as my personal car for fun. I had to regrettably sell my NB1 for the down payment for my house, however I will gladly be bidding on Ron once he is available! RMAP
Ron’s auction is live.
I have to say that driving it more aggressively to really show us the capabilities would have been great IMO. Nonetheless, great series and build.
Y’all should get a project miata and restore it! Like a full on restoration from beater to exquisite!
As I start my miata search and journey I am loving all the great content from the FM channel, great knowledge and technical details. I am looking to build a daily streetable track car. But this video just came across as the biggest sales pitch.
This could of been the best build series ever! But it wasnt.. what was it missing in my opinion was objectivity! What do i mean well you track the car first then u install a part and see what it does against the clock which is objective and then u can give us you subjective opinion, imagine then u keep doing that with other miata’s and keep track of the track times you can do this forever. It would be so cool.
Sorry this wasn't your cup of tea, but Ron was never meant to be a full track car, so we weren't concerned about shaving seconds off the lap times. Thanks for the input, we'll keep it in mind for future videos!
@@FlyinMiataVideo thats a bummer man, you would think miata enthusiast would like to see a car that is practically made for the track be tracked in a build dont you think? But hey it is what it is keep at it its still entertaining.
@@FlyinMiataVideo Even for a street car, tracking the car first to establish baselines would be beneficial in determining the practical good of any performance mod. Outside of improved feel, Miata enthusiasts want to better their numbers, whether on the track or street. And if a mod does neither of those, it just adds weight.
Throwing a catalog of stuff at the car and saying it’s faster and feels better doesn’t tell much of a story about the incremental changes being made.
What a great series of videos, and what a fantastic Miata you ended up with. I look forward to seeing Ron in person at Miata Reunion in a few weeks.
Pity the knee panel is still not sitting right 😀 A problem many NB owners will be familiar with.
Thanks! Glad to know you enjoyed it!
Great series. Maybe do a series on the Mazdaspeed specific upgrade paths. Also would buy a 330mm cypher wheel if it were to become available.
Thanks for the suggestions!
NC1 natural aspirated tuned for max power! Lower, for track.
Love a project!
Ron was such a blast to see come together!
It would be interesting to see you guys build a time attack miata.
We did back in 2002-03, before it was called "Time attack". The car was called Track Dog, and it ran in a series called the Open Track Challenge that was basically 7 days of back-to-back time attack at different tracks. Finished 2nd and 3rd in the two years we contested, if memory serves.
@@FlyinMiataVideo ooh I gotta see if I can find any info on it. I've been considering going that route in the future and I've been absorbing as much information as I can :) Thanks for the great content as always!
@@Jack-ti5ro There's not that much out there about the car anymore. Someday we'll put the build diary back online. Stroker engine, big turbo, water injection, intercooler sprayer, widebody, vented hood, vented rear window, functional wing, big splitter - all stuff that's not that unusual now but was pretty wild at the time.
Great series!, I learned a lot on each modification and we'll explain.
Maybe next time an NC.
Cheers from Spain!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the suggestion!
the kogekis look fantastic
Thanks! We're a big fan of the new silver color!
Simple Retro NA, Turbo NC, Bolt on ND
Thanks for the suggestions! Have you seen our shop NA Bob? It's got our full turbo kit, and a retro inspired dash complete with a NA6 dash and custom gauges by Revilimiter.

Cool
Yo FM please build a supercharged NA8 or NA6 Miata, that would be amazing to see
Big bore stroker and ITB on a 1.8
The Targa Miata was in that configuration for a while.
NC PRHT please. I would like to see how you guys would tackle the rollbar/seat height issue. Thanks
That's easy. We'd install one of our exclusive Transformer roll bars.
Great build , Could you do the same on a NC
Thanks! We'll keep that suggestion in mind for the next series!
So not including the cost of the car itself, how much was the entire build?
Are you going to post a parts list/total for the build, along with performance gains? It would be handy for a ' my NB plus xyz gets you this'. I know most of the gains are subjective; feel etc but some data coupled with that would be great.
We're planning to do a parts list and parts breakdown. You can see dyno charts for the Stage 1 turbo kit on our website here:
flyinmiata.com/products/stage-1-turbo-system-nb-chassis
None of the other parts are really power adders, and since Mike discusses extensively in the videos on subjective feel and differences the parts make while driving, we think recovering all that information is a little bit repetitive.
@@FlyinMiataVideo completely understand that point, sometimes bulleting the information makes the information easily digestible for customers and is an excellent tool for your sales department. That being said, excellent series, and as always I absolutely love all the instructive videos you all produce.
Do you guys know if an ND 2.0 engine + transmission fits into NAs and NBs?
Anything is possible with enough time and money, but it's not that easy. The ND computers use CAN and are tied into almost every aspect of the car. To get the engine to run right, there are dozens of systems that must be added, which means tons and tons of wiring. There are easier swaps that would give you better HP gains.
Do you think the adds value to the car or would keeping it original let it hold it's value better? I know it depends on what buyer is looking for but just wondering in general. I've been hesitant to do upgrades like this because I've read it's more valuable in general keeping it stock. Thoughts?
Depends on the buyer. In general unmolested cars hold their value better. Most of the mods they did are reversable, so it could be taken back to stock.
I've kept all the factory components for upgrades I did so that should I ever sell the car, the new owner can return it to stock should they so choose.
It really depends on the car and market and finding the right buyer. This car is a 1-of-a-kind, NB project put together by our crew at Flyin Miata, not some random modified project car off FB marketplace, so you know it's put together right. We've gone through and done all the needed maintenance, and used quality parts installed by our experienced mechanics to give a confidence that is hard to find on the independent market. Since FM doesn't build cars for customers anymore, this will also be a very unique opportunity for someone to buy a very special car built by us, which should help the value in this particular instance.
I will never understand why you didn’t put a large black handlebar mustache across the front bumper along with the other vinyl. Also, a “Stay Classy San Diego” bumper sticker would have been the pièce de résistance. 😂
There may be a hidden surprise under the front bumper cover...
@@FlyinMiataVideo “Boy… that escalated quickly!”
How much I´d have to spend on parts to have all these upgrades? And what would be the ball park for the labor to have them installed?
We plan on doing a future video on the parts cost, but we can't speak to labor costs since different shops will charge different rates, and the condition of the car could play into the charges.
Did the sound insulation do anything in regards to reducing NVH or road noise?
Absolutely! The insulation kit eliminates most of the road noise, while the boom mat takes care of vibrations.
Have you done an “NA” build?
This is the first ever video build we've done, but we've built many NA's both for customers and the shop. You can see more info on our last full NA build, Cape Bob, here:
ua-cam.com/video/9QtHG4KYhtM/v-deo.htmlsi=jE7QcXQyCtfn_XTc
Was it max boost for nb? Would it be safe to preload the acuator to get 8psi?
We're not able to go over our EO CARB limit which is 8 psi. The max boost varies on every build and it's most important to make sure you maintain good AFRs. If your fueling is good and you're under 8 psi, you can add the included washers to preload the wastegate some. We go over this in the instructions (pg 39) in more detail. s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/instructions.flyinmiata/turbos/NANB_turbo_kit_22-1XXXX.pdf
Are you bringing Ron to Sonoma?
Yep, we'll have Ron on display in our booth at Miata Reunion. Come by and say Hi!
@@FlyinMiataVideo See you there!
3:12 is that an upcoming Project ND?
That's Andy, our turbo-charged shop ND. You can see him on many other videos here on our channel and multiple magazine features such as the infamous 15 HR Road and Track Miata torture test article.

Usually available on our website. Sign up for product notifications to get notified as soon as we get more inventory. Feel free to reach out to our support team if you have any specific questions! Thanks!
flyinmiata.com/products/stage-1-turbo-system-nb-chassis
How many hp do you have with this setup?
And what is the cost off all the project?
We have not put this car on a dyno, but based on similar builds we expect approximately 180 hp at the wheels, give or take. Keep an eye out for a future video for costs.
@@FlyinMiataVideo Has Ron been dyno'd yet?
@@toddcouch1579 No, we never took Ron to a dyno. There's no tuning involved with our Stage 1 Turbo kits, so taking it to a dyno simply isn't necessary.
I offer my bone stock NB for a k24 project series.
What is Ron's final weight after all the modifications?
Ron came in at just over 2,400 lbs.
Would you be able to run this with an AC?
of course! This car retains the AC, power steering, cruise control and VVT.
@@FlyinMiataVideo That’s amazing! Thank you for replying so quickly and job well done on project Ron.
Suggestion, PAINT IT GREEN 💚
But then we couldn't call it "Ron Burgundy"!
That crappy graphics kit leads me to believe they were just throwing the catalog at this car willy nilly.
We had a goal to build a comfortable, friendly street car that greatly improved the driving feel and performance capabilities of the car, while keeping an oem level quality. There were many other parts for the car we could have used, such as vents, wings, etc, but we didn't think they were appropriate for this build. The car is being taken to shows and used to promote our channel and products, so we wanted it to grab attention and promote the vendors who helped with parts for the build. It was anything but a willy nilly build. Every Miata is unique, and everyone has their own unique tastes, so we know the build and graphics may not be for everyone :)
ND.
Does Ron have LSD?
Yep, factory LSD that came with the 6-speed sport brake package.
First, let's see a kswap
I'd honestly love to see any larger 4 cylinder swap(2.4L+) that is less than 5k total to do and net 200whp with a stock ecu and carb legal. Would be an awesome and reliably alternative to a turbo/sc build.
Not CARB compliant, and no one seems to want to spend the money to make a compliant kit.
@@aygwm I don't live in California. I can care less about carb compliance.
@@johncanale3454 The companies that sell parts (like us) do.
@@FlyinMiataVideo so no race cars?
Have there been any updates regarding when and where Project Ron will be available for purchase?
We've submitted the car to be sold on Bring a Trailer (bringatrailer.com/) but it's hard to say when they'll get around to putting it on the auction block. We'll make a bunch of noise about it, I'm sure. Thanks for the interest.
Do an NC next or a Exocet!!! 🤯🙌
The NC is very tempting!
