    I proposed this same idea as a design project in architecture school back in 1989 when I lived in Atlanta. Let's hope it gets done. That area is a no man's land of unused and underutilized space in the heart of the city that has so much potential.

    This is so exciting! I just read an article today sharing that The Stitch is not the only interstate capping project being floated for the city. The proposed Midtown Connector would stretch from 10th Street to North Avenue with a 25-acre park over the interstate, while the long-simmering park over Georgia 400 would provide new greenspace in Buckhead.
    Along with the $900,000 for The Stitch, the USDOT also awarded $16 million to the Atlanta BeltLine to continue buildout of the Southside Trail.
    What an exciting time!

    This needs to happen yesterday! The connector should've been capped from the start. Would love to see this become an activated part of our city.

    Great idea! Love it! This area is currently just a postapocalyptic wasteland. A asphalt supplier's dream. Midtown and Downtown might as well be in separate cities right now, with the interstate running right through it.

    I feel like the Midtown connector project might be more useful at this point. I agree that the separation of downtown cause immense damage to communities, but ga tech college students are more likely to use the greenspace, and access to the growing west Midtown area is more important in modern atlanta. Hopefully, both projects can get done. You can never have enough greenspace. I am still concerned about that much traffic being underground and the health concerns, though. Might be cheaper to just dirt over the interstate and force people to use public transportation built in place of it within in the city. Traffic outcomes might end up being better in the long term.

    This money could be better spent (IMHO) by expanding MARTA from Bankhead to Howell Mill Road - that part of town could seriously benefit from a rail MARTA station

    How would they maintain the section of "capped" interstate? Like repaving and fixing potholes? What about all the exit ramps to get on or off the freeway? Perhaps a series of "green bridges" and new park space in between could suffice. It's too busy a thoroughfare to turn into this oasis

      Ever been to Boston after the big dig? All their streets are under ground and no problems. Take a trip to Boston check it out for yourself. Atlanta big cover will work also. Plenty of cities have done this Dallas among others. This is not new

    Will the expensive project cause the rent to increase for low income households? Will a portion of that money help the homeless in Atlanta? Will the infrastructure and roads be repaired with any of that money? That is more concerning to me over this new greenspace.

    Don’t like it! Why? I like the view of he city when your coming in to the city from the north on 75/85. It’s such a beautiful view of the city especially at night. I don’t want it to go away.

    • @Loud.Thoughts
      @Loud.Thoughts 3 роки тому +9

      But think about it, now you can enjoy that same view for longer chilling at the new park or public spaces created by this project for longer than just driving in the city. They’re not getting rid of the view, but enhancing it.

      From my understanding the construction will cover the interstate which means it (the interstate) will run under the city from one end to the next.
      Therefore the only view you will see from the interstate while driving through the city is an under ground tunnel. Which in my opinion ruins the view of the city.

    • @JamesMcBride1
      @JamesMcBride1 3 роки тому +5

      The area under the stich is already a patchwork of tunnels and would not impact the view you are referencing.

      I like that view too, but it's not livable space. Plus, with the way people drive, I doubt many folks are looking at the view.
