  • Time to see if there’s any life left in the 1969 Mercedes 280SE. Monkey Wrench Mike shows you how to rebuild a very expensive fuel pump after sitting for decades (the pump, not Mike). Can he get it running??

Nice job Mike I have to tell you nobody is better than me taking things apart. And having to go buy a new one cause I couldn’t put back together! Great skills Mike.

    Impressive, Mike!
I had to pause for a moment to put on one of the four T-shirts I bought.
I wasn't disappointed after putting on my Monkey Wrench Mike T-shirt as this is a great DIY repair.
    Again, impressive! :)
EDIT: My dining room table is filled with BMW and road bike parts.
    I don't mind.
My storage shed is getting full of my other BMW parts so my road bike parts, and a few BMW parts, remain on my dining room table.

Mike, could I suggest that you get a 1 gallon can of Gunk carburetor cleaner?
You could be soaking parts while doing other things, and you would insure that your parts are completely clean, inside and out.
    Good video, as usual 👍

That is the easy electric pump. The mechanical and the condition of the injectors is a whole different story. But I am rooting for ya.

So if the electric pump was fouled with varnish, I'm guessing the mechanical pump, distribution lines, and injectors are in the same condition and will need the same attention. You're doing a great job Mike! Looks like you still have a lot of work ahead. I checked the Tube and it appears there's good information to help you.

Thanks for another one, Mike! Good job again as well. Know what, Harbor Freight does sell an inexpensive pretty good ULTRASONIC CLEANER that you can soak a bunch of the things you touch on many of your cars. (That's what the repair place puts you lawnmower carburetor in to make it new again) - just sayin! Also, for the hell of it. have the POS (red) connected THEN the GROUND when you do stuff like this - I found out it does matter. We will all be happy to hear you turn the key as we listen to her run! - SHORTLY - Sonny (CT)

I love the way this pump is rebuild-able and not just crimp-fit together. I'd have to mark the pieces before I took it apart tho or if it was possible to get it back together wrong I'd do it for sure. 8-(

I would have tested the motor while it was apart just to make sure it works before reassembly. Those cookies are going to taste great when you bake with that pan next time!

This is a testament to older, repairable Mercedes technology. With a little bit of skill, and a lot of patience, many of the electrical parts on older Mercedes can be repaired and restored, and this includes windows and headlight switches, alternators, starters, and obviously pumps. Why is this? When new, any of these cars were shipped to 3rd world countries where parts and service were difficult to obtain. Today, we live in a throw away society where everything is throw away, including the major assembly, the car.

  • @johnulrich5572

Love the fact that older Mercedes used slot-head screws for so many things. Made roadside repairs easier. You can improvise a slot head scew driver - not so much with a phillips. Great video. So much more satisfying to rebuld instead of replace.

It's amazing what QTips get used for. I liked using pipe cleaners. Have you looked for them lately? I found them with crafts at Wal-Mart. The one thing I appreciate about you is you like to keep the cars as original as possible.

Nice job. But its dangerous to work on carbs and fuel pumps inside the house but that one was so old it didnt have any gas left in it. My dad was a captain on the Wichita fire department and he told me never to do that. But yours was not a big deal no fumes. Just varnish.

  • @montyholland3357
    @montyholland3357 4 роки тому +5

That there is some craftsmanship, thats a real fuel pump. God i wish they still made pumps like that. Not the plastic POS they have these days. I think that scary face isnt the car being haunted, it janis trying suck gas thru that pump. Like sucking icecream thru a straw. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🤟🏻 Mike

Great video and thanks for all the details. Did you have any issues with soldering the terminals on and off. I’m guessing not since the pump purrs like a kitten. Any tips on replacing the o rings with the terminals?

Just watch the solder and make sure it doesn’t drip on the support plate. And lube the o-rinds for re-assembly. Good luck!!
