I think the coolest thing about gear 5th is that the foreshadowing is pretty much every thing Luffy has ever done that didn’t make sense. Like “how he can use Ace’s moves” “why does milk make his teeth grow back” “why does gear 4th look like that” “why does inflating his arms make it heavier”. If the fruits real power is “pure imagination” then the answer is because Luffy thought it would work.
Brook can also make his teeth grow back by drinking milk, so that part was only a gag. I'm sure if all the crew were missing teeth, milk would do the same for them too.
The milk thing is a general one piece general folk stuff brook does it when they are about to meet with Capone is even memed by fans on sbs how in universe folks only need milk to fix their teeth and bones

I really dont mind the style or moves luffy does in g5. What i do mind is the constant laughter. Especially if you are up to date with manga. Luffy is just laughing his ass off while he saw his friend die. One piece fans say it fits luffy but thats not luffy. Luffy is the man that jokes around but when it comes to his friends is when he gets serious. Something that he learned from shanks and is crucial to his character development

Two things that confirm that a fresh kaido is beating a fresh g5 luffy is both yamato and kidd confirm that kaido must be feeling tired or drained after all the onslaught attacks he faced while luffy awakening basically revived and healed him. Luffy also got healed when he ate meat from caribou when he fell down to the surface.
G5 is really a disappointment. Oda shouldve stayed drawing OP in a normal way not in a cartoonish way, hes just saying he wants to be unique as an excuse for his blunder in G5. imagine luffy G5 fighting shanks/black beard in a looney toon way. OP fans just eating everything what oda throws at them.
It's my favorite form. It matches his personality, the aesthetic of one piece, and explains the strange abilities he seemingly manifests from nowhere. If he thinks it can happen it will. He has a goofy personality so his attacks are going to be goofy lmao. It harmonizes well with his character and makes a lot of sense being his awakening

I like Kaidos statements about Luffy when he awakened his fruit. Kaido said not only is he able to use armament coating with CoC coating, his awakening is like a zoan, but he can rubberize his surroundings like a paramecia. I think this is what the ability of 'freedom' and 'fighting however you want' truly means. Luffys next step in growth is combining his Gear forms 1-4 with the Nika transformation

Imo Gear 5th brings Luffy's power full circle: From East Blue to Water 7 Luffy relied on creative and sometimes ridiculous techniques to defeat his opponents Enis Lobby pushed him to his limits, forcing him to create 2 Gears and focus more on Powerful attacks and less creative techniques That trend continues up through the Paramount War has Luffy pushes himself to breaking point. Timeskip has Luffy Learning Haki which aids hims in the New World. He has returned to some goofiness but not much. The New World he continues to focus on his Haki and his Gears Wano and Onigashima force Luffy to take his Haki to new heights and then he Awakens Gear 5th essentially freed him from the constraints he had continued to pile up since Water 7. Now Luffy can Be his old Goofy self from East Blue but still retaining everything he learned
Yeah thematically I think it's really good for the story, Oda has always tried his best to make the story address serious themes without being too edgy. It's clear in how Luffy usually would have such goofy drawbacks in those forms, like turning small for a while or having a giant balloon body. To me his gear 5 form allows him to retain the creative attacks that were more common early on without reducing the intensity of the fight. I could see him eventually just using that form forever when he fights, automatically growing his limbs or muscles for specific attacks without the wind up and downsides.
His fruit power is not op. It is basically a paramecia-like ability (rubber) but he changes his appearance when awakens. If it still was a paramecia, the awakening would still be the same in terms of abilities the only difference is his looking would not change.
The proof it is not op is the fact nobody was able to awaken it in 800 years. Probably because previous users died in combat before they achieved awakening.
I can acknowledge he might be a “Chosen one” but not in the traditional sense. He’s not following a prophecy all he’s doing is completing someone’s fails work and carrying on their will.

Not only that, there's no explanation of how he earned it, and yes I heard all the lame excuses that the fandom has created that Oda has not confirmed. Now KOL sits here a lie about how much he loves this transformation and I found it interesting that when he was reviewing the trailer he paused it on the part where luffy was a black silhouettes looking like edge lord. He has overly hyped for that part of the transformation as if that was the actual form or transformation. I honestly dislike that luffy has a mythical zoan fruit in general. I hate when anime start off with a character that’s, “a nobody looking to make a name” and turns into “he was overpowered since the start of the series and just never knew he had the power”.I swear at this point Goku is the only anime protagonist that ACTUALLY works hard for a transformation. He wasn’t born special aside from being a saiyan he’s just a very hard worker. Most saiyans he comes across catch up to him easily or are already stronger than he is because Goku is low class. I hate character progressions like that, it’s so unsatisfying. That why characters like shanks are so interesting. One Piece has always been goofy. It’s fantastic. It doesn’t need to be serious or edgy. It’s a breath of fresh air. The all white is really cool. I don’t really like that’s it’s truly the “ Nika “ fruit but that’s whatever since he’s still rubber. I love the idea that this is his final form. And Its symbolism as Nika will be more important as we get further into the story. But I do agree that we should of had Nika name dropped much much earlier.

When I first saw that the Gomu fruit had been changed I felt pretty meh about it. But what if in the past the previous user be it JoyBoy or someone before him had used the awakening and thus “ Nika “ and it’s other names are just what the user was called in ancient times since the user would appear godlike to them. We see it all in the time in One Piece. Someone is dubbed or given an epithet based on perception such as “ Devil Child “ Nico Robin or “ God “ Usopp. Those names are only based on what others perceive and call it as such even if that isn’t what they truly are in reality. Nika was never a real God or deity. Just the awakened version of the rubber fruit. It appears that the fruit is really “ Nika “ in name only. Or how others such as the Gorosei perceive it. Luffy really doesn’t act like a Zoan type at all. He affects his environment in his awakened state, and he’s still rubber. The Sun God, Nika, and the warrior of Liberation are all names that others have dubbed the user. In reality the fruits true awakening is the embodiment of freedom. And what better way to compliment and embody that state of freedom than with a striking white form that sparks joy and hope? It’s still the Gomu fruit.
Props to Kol to address some of the issues, I was sick to hear GODA crazy foreshadowed nika since episode 1. I think there are a lot more of things wrong about gear 5 and the execution of that chapter. But yeah maybe Kaido was so strong the only way to beat him was with the legendary god fruit the gorosei was looking for years and was escaping on his own.
In my opinion, nobody can explain why gear 5 is so good fits to Luffy as Uzumaki Khan, when he was reacting on manga chapters of fight between Kaido and G5 Luffy.

I'm over the fact that I coped and seethed So much about this but the one thing I always liked about Luffy is that he had a crappy fruit that nobody thought was useful for over a thousand chapters and through sheer willpower and determination he made it into an awesome power and then Oda was just like JK he actually has this super overpowered god fruit. That was my sticking point at the time. The same people that shat on Naruto for having this child a prophecy destiny all seem to be praising the Nika thing even though it's pretty much the same narrative device.
I disagree on the note that the whole "chosen one" directly contradicts the plot of naruto coming from nothing and working his way up. While it was cool that despite him having a goofy ass fruit he worked on it to become OP, it was never an actual idea pushed by the narrative.

Then the zoan aspect is litterally his appearance and maybe his happiness whuch could be associated with his boost in energy and dopamine from the transformation

Yeah, Nika has really shaky footing. But I think the power is perfect, and I do legit think oda had the power in mind from day 1. Can very easily see him starting out with the idea for looney toons pirate man, then working backwards and nerfing it into the rubber fruit.
Even if it was just Rubber this power would still be something feasible. Viola has shown that Fruits are able to grant powers from puns, the whale tear thingies are due to a pun in Japanese. Going from there Luffy could pull of Gear 5th even if his fruit was just Rubber, since the name of the animation style that Gear 5th evokes is Rubberhose animation.

The power is great but its lore implication for the story is very problematic. Oda knows this and admitted that "most readers won't like it". I just don't understand this decision because Luffy can still have toon powers without retconning his devil fruit. I also don't understand Luffy going full hypermania during Gear 5. Oda just dug his grave for making Luffy's future fights difficult to write tension. Like Luffy can still feel cartoony with Gear 5 even if his demeanor is serious.

I hate this form because it solidifies Luffy as the basic “Chosen One” shonen protagonist archetype with the whole JoyBoy thing. It takes away from the main reason I watched 1000+ episodes of this show, which was seeing how a complete underdog in every sense of the word overcame ridiculous obstacles through sheer tenacity. Now I tell myself it doesn’t matter if Luffy was “defeated/killed” at any point in the story because we would have gotten this same result.

Personally for me I just didn't like the fruit type switching from a normal parameica to a mythical zoan loses the coolness of the fact Luffy made a no name fruit legendary
Sometimes legends hide with the ordinary but to get to legendary it still takes work. Luffy still cool because he worked his way to get to this point with all his creativity and release it’s full potential.
But the thing we missing is most fruits aren’t known or crazy until someone makes them crazy. Anyone can get the fruit but can they use it to it’s peak abilities. Most fruits align with personality and this fits luffy the most
Luffy still rubber, this god nonsense is just in the naming of the fruit. There is no toon force, its all rubber maniuplation, Luffy isn't rubber he has the properties of rubber and applies it to the environment, now able to become even more rubbery he can stretch using his will/haki without blowing into himself. He runs on air solidifying it because air is a substance a gas so hes just making platforms really quickly.

Thanks for pointing this out, This asspull transformation was the worst thing to ever happen to one piece since the introduction of time travel. It wouldn't have been so bad if oda didn't establish that it was a God fruit that pretty much retconned almost all of luffy's achievements and made him a God.
U need to do a deep dive and see how many hints were made along the way , I’ve read and seen all one piece material, and just like most people in the comments , it felt perfect . Like idk it just fit . People tryna say this was forced because they looking at is a only sun god nika, buttt yaw not paying attention to the JOYBOY aspect . Are we reading the same manga? Where did oda make luffy a god? He literally just clarified he ate a mythical zoan with the properties of of a certain god, by your logic Sengoku is also a god? Also how is it a retcon when it CLEARLY has drawbacks that are very detrimental to luffy’s health?? Maybe if you need a reread that oda already established that luffy fruit is pretty mid but since he used his imagination to maximize it's capabilities it became a great asset to him. That how he even awakened the fruit in the first place because he pushed it to it's limit while those in the past 800 years could not.
I like the form, but I can see why people dislike it. To me, I feel like a child watching Looney Tunes, The Flintstones, Tom and Jerry, and other old cartoon series(I mean this as a good thing obviously).

What about this for foreshadowing? Back in Loguetown, after Luffy survives the Buggy execution, Luffy is laughing out loud. Smoker makes a remark about him smiling at his death, then says, "it's like the heavens themselves didn't want him to die." Then Sanji and Zoro are standing there and I believe Sanji asks, "do you believe in God?" Now I can only honestly remember this in the anime, I would need some clarification in the manga but that whole scene is canon
One, it is confirmed that the D clan laugh and smile during death! Two yes it is pretty obvious that that lightning was dragon, he has wind based powers and an awakening of wind based powers is controlling the weather which in turn affects lightning etc

He’s been talking about Joyboy since Fishman island. In big mom flashback the were celebrating a event for their sun god and in the Nolan’s flashback their was a girl being sacrificed for their Sun God.

I’m writing to a 10 months old comment and I agree. Glad I dropped the series after big mam arc. Pretty low when Oda basically enjoys drawing ugly characters, now he makes his main character a god. Why not end the story already. Well he can’t. Got to milk this cow. Ppl always praise how much foreshadowing is in the story. Basically Oda already know how the story will go. His job is to satisfy the studio and stretch out this sucker. Of course it’s easy to drop hints along the way.
I like the new Nika form because it allows luffy to be himself while fighting. I get that people feel that its not as “serious” as other fruits 🤣🤣 but in a way it is a pretty serious df. And i feel that the “freedom” will allow for some crazy stunts
The thing i liked about the change from paramecia to zoan is that, i always found strange how luffys "paramecia" was the only paramecia that completely changed the user body all other paramecias that could do something similar gave the character a power to change the users body, but gomu gomu kinda "fused" luffy with rubber.
Honestly, the fruit being a Zoan also fixes a couple of plot holes that had been nagging me for a few years now. Luffy always had an unexplained healing factor that didn't make sense, almost lampshaded really, knowing he was in fact a Zoan explains those incidents very well.

Honestly I think the Gorosei just didn't know Luffy was Joy Boy until news of Wano and WCI reached them. People have to remember that the Gorosei are at the very top of the pyramid, so the details that they receive about events in the world are going to be high level. So they'll learn 'Monkey D Luffy broke into Impel Down' but they won't necessarily hear about his power set, because they don't need to. It's the job of the Marines to deal with Pirates, and Kong is the one delegated with keeping an eye on all that info and ensuring the Marines are doing their jobs. So it makes perfect sense that the Gorosei didn't really know / care / investigate Luffy until he showed himself to be a genuine threat / major contender in the world. That's when they'd realize he's joy boy and start hearing about his DF powers. It's just unrealistic to believe that the Gorosei receive reports about every pirate that enters the GL, and reads through detailed reports about the strengths and abilities of every single one. Even when Luffy was breaking into Impel Down / crashing the Marineford War, he was not a threat at all to the WG, so there's no reason they'd pay attention to him. Since they're so secretive about the existence of Joyboy and the Nika fruit, no one would have known to pass that information on to them, or realized Luffy was a major threat either.
Bruh he's the grandson of the hero of the marines adopted brother to son of the Pirate King Ace and son of the leader of the Revolutionary Army 🙁. The gorosei knew for sure who Luffy was and what his abilities were. My only guess is they never thought he would make it this far.

For the Gorousei, as you stated, even the gorousei might not know about nika, for sure, because of how much of a secret it is. Blue Scarf isn't even allowed to know the reason he has to make sure luffy dies to kaidou, or even that the gorousei want to make it look like luffy simply died while fighting kaidou, and not because they directly intervened. They don't want their involvement known, because they don't want anyone to realize that the df is the real problem, they don't want people to realize how valuable it actually is, since it always comes back, they don't want someone like dragon, kaidou, big mom, or blackbeard to actually hunt for, and acquire the nika ability. But also, for the nico robin bit, they stated that they believe that nico robin is likely already in the hands of their agents, they don't know that robin has continued to successfully evaded them when they sent out the orders to kill luffy, and after the war is over, they still think that robin will be brought to them. As for if the Gorousei could've been able to send someone to kill luffy at anytime, the Gorousei wouldn't take notice of him prior to Croc, there are millions of criminals in the OP world, you have to reach a certain level of infamy to even reach their sight. After croc, the Gorousei took notice of him, but they couldn't do anything to him at Alabasta, the Alabastan royalty were covering for him, and with bon clay taking their ship, it wasn't even certain that he was still on Alabasta. It took 3 days for them to issue his bounty, and he left without even seeing it, on the night it arrived, so there was no time for an admiral/cp9/cp0 to even show up by the time he left. There's also the issue that Shanks is trying to meet up with WB, which has the marines on edge, and the fact that half of the active CP9 agents are on a 5 year long undercover mission to retrieve the pluton blueprints, while the other half is already out assassinating rebel leaders, so, they seem to be short on capable manpower to just call upon, at any given time. It's possible to predict with a certain amount of accuracy which island they would head to next, but that's only if they're following the log pose, and don't have an eternal pose, which is how they got to jaya, robin stole an eternal pose from Masira to Jaya. They're only there for a single day, and when they leave, the last time they're seen, is when they're being blasted to the sky by the Knockup Stream, and they aren't seen for days afterwards, probably presumed to be dead. The next time they're spotted, maybe a week later, the only person that knows where they are and where they're going, is Aokiji. Aokiji is stated by Spandam, to have told him (Spandam), that robin was on a pirate ship headed for W7, it''s not specified that aokiji said that she's on the strawhat's crew (considering his relation to garp, it's likely aokiji withheld that info), and no one else knows that she is either. Even if it was specified, Spandam would only care about nico robin, because he wouldn't know the secret of the nika, so, spandam has no reason to tell the gorousei about luffy (spandam's an idiot). Post EL, both Aokiji and Garp are at W7, neither really tries to do anything to actually stop luffy. At TB, the Gorousei send Kuma, under the guise of helping Moria, but he allows them to survive, while claiming he dealt with them, and continues to do so at SA.
Yes it is . While he is in gear 5 you can’t feel the impact of him taking actual damage or really you can’t tell when he is taking actual GOOD amount of damage. When Luffy was fighting kaido in gear 5 it felt like it was an annoyance for Luffy more than a struggle.

In the uta special which is canaon he reacted to shanks crew as villans maybe showing he would be against pirate life and be marine. But since he met shanks he respected him and decided he wanted to be a pirate. Luffy ate the fruit because he saw it since we know zoans hae wills the fruit like what it saw in luffy and inticed him to eat it. Also the prophecy could litterally come from someone who saw into the future like that lady from fidhman island that said luffy will destroy fishman island. I tried to ignore that part but so much people are defending it nonsensically to me it’s headache inducing! The nika fruit has a habit of making itself impossible to be caught and they know this but they had no clue that its awakening was real and that it was a myth nor where its whereabouts were after shanks stole it until as early as post enies lobby(arlong,crocodile,smoker,aokiji and garp werent or didnt disclose luffys powers and if they did the info didnt reach the gorosei)they had kuma backup moria to take luffy in thriller bark and then their hands was full to prep dealing with whitebeard when luffy was in saboady and then after that luffy kept being saved by top tiers until 3d2y to where they thought he was dead until he blew his cover in dressrosa and luffy had garnered too many allies even fuji spared him cuz of the citizens and post dressrosa luffy been in yonkou territory, the gorosei are looking incompetent atm for not holding morgans accountable for that hear 5 picture on luffys bounty and for having greenbull being a joke of an admiral, and for their admirals not to stop sabo and the rev commanders but theres literally nothing they could of done better or different to stop luffy tbh

Gear 5 was the straw that broke my back with this show. I despise this transformation and everything it does to One Piece narratively and thematically. I enjoyed a show about an underdog succeeding on willpower, creativity, and perseverance. I do not enjoy a show about a predestined chosen one with unbeatable reality warping powers winning because he got lucky when he chose to eat a fruit.
Lets not try to polish turd. Say it as is.. Oda failed at storytelling. He focused too much on the fodders running and screaming and ran out of materials for the actual bits that mattered. So he rushes it with gear 5 and the “nika fruit” bs and left way too many unanswered questions which more than likely he will never get around to answering… because he will be back to covering more important stuff like… new fodders running around and screaming for 500 chapters.
Another hint to luffys devil fruits true nature is how gear 4th tank man and snake man. Are literally just Luccis transformations. Big kitty and skinny kitty. Which I always found pretty odd but now makes a whole lot of sense
Gear 5 is my favorite transmission I also do love gear 2 snake man & boundman too. But it's a preference. Flaming hair & the combat is ridiculously crazy & it fits him perfectly
for the first point i’d say it was more satisfactory in fulfilling joyboy instead of nika, just putting them as one so it’s not messing with anything, plus zunesha does say “joyboy has returned” and then luffy goes gear 5, i think that’s where the hype comes from
I think the coolest thing about gear 5th is that the foreshadowing is pretty much every thing Luffy has ever done that didn’t make sense. Like “how he can use Ace’s moves” “why does milk make his teeth grow back” “why does gear 4th look like that” “why does inflating his arms make it heavier”. If the fruits real power is “pure imagination” then the answer is because Luffy thought it would work.

Two things that confirm that a fresh kaido is beating a fresh g5 luffy is both yamato and kidd confirm that kaido must be feeling tired or drained after all the onslaught attacks he faced while luffy awakening basically revived and healed him. Luffy also got healed when he ate meat from caribou when he fell down to the surface.
His awakening didn’t heal him he was still full of blood and kept getting hurt during the last fight he did overpower kaido tho
G5 is really a disappointment.
Oda shouldve stayed drawing OP in a normal way not in a cartoonish way, hes just saying he wants to be unique as an excuse for his blunder in G5.

It's my favorite form. It matches his personality, the aesthetic of one piece, and explains the strange abilities he seemingly manifests from nowhere. If he thinks it can happen it will. He has a goofy personality so his attacks are going to be goofy lmao. It harmonizes well with his character and makes a lot of sense being his awakening
His power isn't imagination. It's just more powerful and varied rubber powers.

I like Kaidos statements about Luffy when he awakened his fruit. Kaido said not only is he able to use armament coating with CoC coating, his awakening is like a zoan, but he can rubberize his surroundings like a paramecia. I think this is what the ability of 'freedom' and 'fighting however you want' truly means. Luffys next step in growth is combining his Gear forms 1-4 with the Nika transformation

From East Blue to Water 7 Luffy relied on creative and sometimes ridiculous techniques to defeat his opponents
Enis Lobby pushed him to his limits, forcing him to create 2 Gears and focus more on Powerful attacks and less creative techniques
That trend continues up through the Paramount War has Luffy pushes himself to breaking point.
Timeskip has Luffy Learning Haki which aids hims in the New World. He has returned to some goofiness but not much.
The New World he continues to focus on his Haki and his Gears
Wano and Onigashima force Luffy to take his Haki to new heights and then he Awakens
Gear 5th essentially freed him from the constraints he had continued to pile up since Water 7. Now Luffy can Be his old Goofy self from East Blue but still retaining everything he learned
Yeah thematically I think it's really good for the story, Oda has always tried his best to make the story address serious themes without being too edgy. It's clear in how Luffy usually would have such goofy drawbacks in those forms, like turning small for a while or having a giant balloon body. To me his gear 5 form allows him to retain the creative attacks that were more common early on without reducing the intensity of the fight. I could see him eventually just using that form forever when he fights, automatically growing his limbs or muscles for specific attacks without the wind up and downsides.

His fruit power is not op. It is basically a paramecia-like ability (rubber) but he changes his appearance when awakens. If it still was a paramecia, the awakening would still be the same in terms of abilities the only difference is his looking would not change.
The proof it is not op is the fact nobody was able to awaken it in 800 years. Probably because previous users died in combat before they achieved awakening.
I can acknowledge he might be a “Chosen one” but not in the traditional sense. He’s not following a prophecy all he’s doing is completing someone’s fails work and carrying on their will.

The issue with gear 5 is probably the combination of the fact luffy fruit was this op mythical fruit all along and people didn't like it and the fact it wasn't sun wukong as corny as that would have been lol but I argue that gear 5th uniqueness is what makes it cool

He has overly hyped for that part of the transformation as if that was the actual form or transformation.

I honestly dislike that luffy has a mythical zoan fruit in general. I hate when anime start off with a character that’s, “a nobody looking to make a name” and turns into “he was overpowered since the start of the series and just never knew he had the power”.I swear at this point Goku is the only anime protagonist that ACTUALLY works hard for a transformation. He wasn’t born special aside from being a saiyan he’s just a very hard worker. Most saiyans he comes across catch up to him easily or are already stronger than he is because Goku is low class. I hate character progressions like that, it’s so unsatisfying. That why characters like shanks are so interesting. When I first saw that the Gomu fruit had been changed I felt pretty meh about it. But what if in the past the previous user be it JoyBoy or someone before him had used the awakening and thus “ Nika “ and it’s other names are just what the user was called in ancient times since the user would appear godlike to them. We see it all in the time in One Piece. Someone is dubbed or given an epithet based on perception such as “ Devil Child “ Nico Robin or “ God “ Usopp. Those names are only based on what others perceive and call it as such even if that isn’t what they truly are in reality. Nika was never a real God or deity. Just the awakened version of the rubber fruit. It appears that the fruit is really “ Nika “ in name only. Or how others such as the Gorosei perceive it. Luffy really doesn’t act like a Zoan type at all. He affects his environment in his awakened state, and he’s still rubber. The Sun God, Nika, and the warrior of Liberation are all names that others have dubbed the user. In reality the fruits true awakening is the embodiment of freedom. And what better way to compliment and embody that state of freedom than with a striking white form that sparks joy and hope? It’s still the Gomu fruit.

Props to Kol to address some of the issues, I was sick to hear GODA crazy foreshadowed nika since episode 1. I think there are a lot more of things wrong about gear 5 and the execution of that chapter. But yeah maybe Kaido was so strong the only way to beat him was with the legendary god fruit the gorosei was looking for years and was escaping on his own.

I'm over the fact that I coped and seethed So much about this but the one thing I always liked about Luffy is that he had a crappy fruit that nobody thought was useful for over a thousand chapters and through sheer willpower and determination he made it into an awesome power and then Oda was just like JK he actually has this super overpowered god fruit. Yeah, Nika has really shaky footing. But I think the power is perfect, and I do legit think oda had the power in mind from day 1. Can very easily see him starting out with the idea for looney toons pirate man, then working backwards and nerfing it into the rubber fruit.
Even if it was just Rubber this power would still be something feasible. Viola has shown that Fruits are able to grant powers from puns, the whale tear thingies are due to a pun in Japanese. Going from there Luffy could pull of Gear 5th even if his fruit was just Rubber, since the name of the animation style that Gear 5th evokes is Rubberhose animation.

I hate this form because it solidifies Luffy as the basic “Chosen One” shonen protagonist archetype with the whole JoyBoy thing. It takes away from the main reason I watched 1000+ episodes of this show, which was seeing how a complete underdog in every sense of the word overcame ridiculous obstacles through sheer tenacity. Smoker makes a remark about him smiling at his death, then says, "it's like the heavens themselves didn't want him to die." Then Sanji and Zoro are standing there and I believe Sanji asks, "do you believe in God?" Now I can only honestly remember this in the anime, I would need some clarification in the manga but that whole scene is canon

It’s clear that Oda has wanted this for Luffy for a long time, but I think he realized that he hadn’t foreshadowed it properly, so he did some last-minute foreshadowing in Wano.
He’s been talking about Joyboy since Fishman island. In big mom flashback the were celebrating a event for their sun god and in the Nolan’s flashback their was a girl being sacrificed for their Sun God.

I’m writing to a 10 months old comment and I agree. Glad I dropped the series after big mam arc. Pretty low when Oda basically enjoys drawing ugly characters, now he makes his main character a god. Why not end the story already. Well he can’t. Got to milk this cow.
Ppl always praise how much foreshadowing is in the story. Basically Oda already know how the story will go. His job is to satisfy the studio and stretch out this sucker. Of course it’s easy to drop hints along the way.

I like the new Nika form because it allows luffy to be himself while fighting. I get that people feel that its not as “serious” as other fruits 🤣🤣 but in a way it is a pretty serious df. And i feel that the “freedom” will allow for some crazy stunts

The thing i liked about the change from paramecia to zoan is that, i always found strange how luffys "paramecia" was the only paramecia that completely changed the user body all other paramecias that could do something similar gave the character a power to change the users body, but gomu gomu kinda "fused" luffy with rubber.
Honestly, the fruit being a Zoan also fixes a couple of plot holes that had been nagging me for a few years now. Luffy always had an unexplained healing factor that didn't make sense, almost lampshaded really, knowing he was in fact a Zoan explains those incidents very well.

Honestly I think the Gorosei just didn't know Luffy was Joy Boy until news of Wano and WCI reached them. People have to remember that the Gorosei are at the very top of the pyramid, so the details that they receive about events in the world are going to be high level. So they'll learn 'Monkey D Luffy broke into Impel Down' but they won't necessarily hear about his power set, because they don't need to. It's the job of the Marines to deal with Pirates, and Kong is the one delegated with keeping an eye on all that info and ensuring the Marines are doing their jobs. So it makes perfect sense that the Gorosei didn't really know / care / investigate Luffy until he showed himself to be a genuine threat / major contender in the world. That's when they'd realize he's joy boy and start hearing about his DF powers.
It's just unrealistic to believe that the Gorosei receive reports about every pirate that enters the GL, and reads through detailed reports about the strengths and abilities of every single one. Even when Luffy was breaking into Impel Down / crashing the Marineford War, he was not a threat at all to the WG, so there's no reason they'd pay attention to him. Since they're so secretive about the existence of Joyboy and the Nika fruit, no one would have known to pass that information on to them, or realized Luffy was a major threat either.

For the Gorousei, as you stated, even the gorousei might not know about nika, for sure, because of how much of a secret it is. Blue Scarf isn't even allowed to know the reason he has to make sure luffy dies to kaidou, or even that the gorousei want to make it look like luffy simply died while fighting kaidou, and not because they directly intervened. They don't want their involvement known, because they don't want anyone to realize that the df is the real problem, they don't want people to realize how valuable it actually is, since it always comes back, they don't want someone like dragon, kaidou, big mom, or blackbeard to actually hunt for, and acquire the nika ability. But also, for the nico robin bit, they stated that they believe that nico robin is likely already in the hands of their agents, they don't know that robin has continued to successfully evaded them when they sent out the orders to kill luffy, and after the war is over, they still think that robin will be brought to them.
As for if the Gorousei could've been able to send someone to kill luffy at anytime, the Gorousei wouldn't take notice of him prior to Croc, there are millions of criminals in the OP world, you have to reach a certain level of infamy to even reach their sight. After croc, the Gorousei took notice of him, but they couldn't do anything to him at Alabasta, the Alabastan royalty were covering for him, and with bon clay taking their ship, it wasn't even certain that he was still on Alabasta. It took 3 days for them to issue his bounty, and he left without even seeing it, on the night it arrived, so there was no time for an admiral/cp9/cp0 to even show up by the time he left. There's also the issue that Shanks is trying to meet up with WB, which has the marines on edge, and the fact that half of the active CP9 agents are on a 5 year long undercover mission to retrieve the pluton blueprints, while the other half is already out assassinating rebel leaders, so, they seem to be short on capable manpower to just call upon, at any given time. It's possible to predict with a certain amount of accuracy which island they would head to next, but that's only if they're following the log pose, and don't have an eternal pose, which is how they got to jaya, robin stole an eternal pose from Masira to Jaya. They're only there for a single day, and when they leave, the last time they're seen, is when they're being blasted to the sky by the Knockup Stream, and they aren't seen for days afterwards, probably presumed to be dead. The next time they're spotted, maybe a week later, the only person that knows where they are and where they're going, is Aokiji. Aokiji is stated by Spandam, to have told him (Spandam), that robin was on a pirate ship headed for W7, it''s not specified that aokiji said that she's on the strawhat's crew (considering his relation to garp, it's likely aokiji withheld that info), and no one else knows that she is either. Even if it was specified, Spandam would only care about nico robin, because he wouldn't know the secret of the nika, so, spandam has no reason to tell the gorousei about luffy (spandam's an idiot). Post EL, both Aokiji and Garp are at W7, neither really tries to do anything to actually stop luffy. At TB, the Gorousei send Kuma, under the guise of helping Moria, but he allows them to survive, while claiming he dealt with them, and continues to do so at SA.
Yes it is . While he is in gear 5 you can’t feel the impact of him taking actual damage or really you can’t tell when he is taking actual GOOD amount of damage. When Luffy was fighting kaido in gear 5 it felt like it was an annoyance for Luffy more than a struggle.
G5 didn’t last that long and luffy is know to take tons of hits

In the uta special which is canaon he reacted to shanks crew as villans maybe showing he would be against pirate life and be marine. But since he met shanks he respected him and decided he wanted to be a pirate. Luffy ate the fruit because he saw it since we know zoans hae wills the fruit like what it saw in luffy and inticed him to eat it. Also the prophecy could litterally come from someone who saw into the future like that lady from fidhman island that said luffy will destroy fishman island. 5 Elders are originally from Skypia, which would mean that they didn’t know what rubber was until they did, but then again They were too late.
I just think we need a Nika folklore song or something, to give context for his history and abilities.

So after thinking about it I feel the Gorosei failing may be meta contextual for the elder mindset in Japan from what I hear. Just a lot of hard headed old men who don't really see a reason to do things differently.. Them not hunting Luffy could be due to their hubris that they could snuff out anything of note that came to light..
The nika fruit has a habit of making itself impossible to be caught and they know this but they had no clue that its awakening was real and that it was a myth nor where its whereabouts were after shanks stole it until as early as post enies lobby(arlong,crocodile,smoker,aokiji and garp werent or didnt disclose luffys powers and if they did the info didnt reach the gorosei)they had kuma backup moria to take luffy in thriller bark and then their hands was full to prep dealing with whitebeard when luffy was in saboady and then after that luffy kept being saved by top tiers until 3d2y to where they thought he was dead until he blew his cover in dressrosa and luffy had garnered too many allies even fuji spared him cuz of the citizens and post dressrosa luffy been in yonkou territory, the gorosei are looking incompetent atm for not holding morgans accountable for that hear 5 picture on luffys bounty and for having greenbull being a joke of an admiral, and for their admirals not to stop sabo and the rev commanders but theres literally nothing they could of done better or different to stop luffy tbh

Gear 5 was the straw that broke my back with this show. I despise this transformation and everything it does to One Piece narratively and thematically.
I enjoyed a show about an underdog succeeding on willpower, creativity, and perseverance.
I do not enjoy a show about a predestined chosen one with unbeatable reality warping powers winning because he got lucky when he chose to eat a fruit.
Lets not try to polish turd. Say it as is.. Oda failed at storytelling. He focused too much on the fodders running and screaming and ran out of materials for the actual bits that mattered. So he rushes it with gear 5 and the “nika fruit” bs and left way too many unanswered questions which more than likely he will never get around to answering… because he will be back to covering more important stuff like… new fodders running around and screaming for 500 chapters.

for the first point i’d say it was more satisfactory in fulfilling joyboy instead of nika, just putting them as one so it’s not messing with anything, plus zunesha does say “joyboy has returned” and then luffy goes gear 5, i think that’s where the hype comes from
