I'll be honest, regardless of platform, games haven't been as good as they were in the 80s-2000s. Too much deadlines and crunches has ruined the magic games used to possess. Not a single game in the last 10 yrs has held my attention for more than a year whereas back in the day, several games I was playing for years on end.
They lost their way with Ghostwire & Hi-Fi Rush (praised by a minority... & ignored by most). In fact The Evil Within 2 failed to iterate correctly on the "great but flawed" original TEW1. They took great level design variety & a cool concept (horror in the mind) & reduced it down to a semi open world collectathon in a banal setting. They been accumulating commercial failures for xyz reasons, so the end was inevitable. The industry is screwed though because there's been a brain drain for a decade now. The great devs who made the best games are pretty much gone now. It's just DEI & AI now working on copy/paste rehashed tropes we've played a billion times already.
@colteastwood - this is as much your fault as it is Phil Spencer's. For month's you have been making videos championing everything Microsoft has been doing, not giving a critical eye to the negative impacts of Phil's decisions (aka Game Pass is the future of gaming / Xbox buying up every studio). You perpetually disregard anything worth criticizing about Xbox, which in turn allows people like Phil Spencer to not be held accountable, and that is why we are now potentially witnessing the destruction of Xbox. So many people have cautioned you time after time for using circular logic in your videos to justify things Xbox has been doing that not healthy for the industry as a whole or for Xbox gamers, but yet you refuse to take off the rosey colored glasses and acknowledge some of these concerns. You and the rest of the Xbox pundits are as much to blame for this and I hope this encourages you all to think more criticality about Phil Spencer's CEO spin talk and to start questioning what is really going on with Xbox, so you stop acting surprised when things like this continue to happen.

It is sad for Tango Games, they made interesting stuff. But the lead funder (resident evil creator) left at the time of HifiRush so maybe it is related. The other studios however... Not really a surprise.
This is exactly what is happening to the entire gaming industry. People are so much more indecisive these days with their precious time. You can’t just throw a studio under the bus because of a stinker game. Now if it’s three stinkers in a row we have a problem. But the team behind Red Fall was basically told to make a hollow cash grab game, that’s why many left the project and why the game was bad. The problem is the leadership at Xbox for not helping to lead their studios and their out of touch approach to what gamers want. If they haven’t delivered consistently good games within 11 years, I don’t think ABK will solve the problem.
As a PC gamer I've been apprehensive about all the studio acquisitions Microsoft has been making for a long time. I had a feeling from the beginning that they would either use it to screw over anybody not on an XBox console, or they would spread themselves too thin and end up doing more harm than good in the long run.
We do get a lot of the games anyway, but if some stupid, overzealous corporation snatches up every studio they can find and then starts shuttering them, nobody gets anything.

Actually Prey was created and released WELL before the Microsoft buyout. Microsoft has no reason to promote it. It wasn't their studio Bethesda was under the zenimax umbrella at that time. They were a third party developer for PC, Xbox and PS. So if you didn't hear of it that wasn't Xbox fault that was Zenimax and Bethesda.
I bought Evil Within 1 and 2 a few months ago, I loved the hell out of them, especially 2. It made me remember that this is the 10 year anniversary since its release. Unfortunate but people gotta realise that this is eto push their franchise titles (Elder Scrolls, Fallout) out quicker. the closed studios made no money for xbox
I just read that When Shinji left, he took a major part of the devs with him. That would certainly explain the closure if the core of the studio was no longer there and they were just left with the shell of their former selves. I think the problem isn't Phil but the shareholders that just want to see their investment grow. They don't want to ride out the storm, they just cut bait when things are not looking up.
I saw on Reddit that the problem with Tango was a little more complicated. Long story short, after HiFi Rush dropped, the founder of the studio, Shinji Mikami, left with most of the staff to start his new studio. It's a huge loss to close any studio, but if you lose most of the people, what can you do? The other thing is Arkane. Over the past year, every podcast and UA-camr who talks about how bad Xbox is right now has mentioned Redfall. This must have been terrifying for the developers, and I'm sure their morale was low. I hope they will basically transfer to other studios for a fresh star
"...if you lose most of the people, what can you do?" What does any business do when they lose people? They hire new people. You don't close your business because you lose your employees. Besides, Mikami used Hi-Fi Rush to train the new guy that he left in charge of Tango. So, Tango was in good hands still. The real problem is that Matt Booty didn't want to wait years for Tango's new game to come out. That's from a report I saw. He and Zenimax's studio head were pitched new games from Tango and Arkane, but when they were told that those games would take years to come out, the decision was made to close those two studios.
The closing of Arkane sounds logical (I'd much prefer these people were moved internally than laid off - they've proven capable with previous titles and are valuable assets), let's face how difficult it would have been to market anything coming from the studio that made Redfall. I know the game being bad is on leadership (they were made work on something they weren't really staffed to do), but the fact that their name would forever be associated with that is too much of a burden. As for the others, I really couldn't have seen it coming.
Gaming profits are in trouble because of their own shortsighted policies. Our ultra powerful next generation consoles HAVE BEEN COMPLETELY WASTED on HD remasters of games we have already played. The initial premise was okay 10 years ago. But now all we get is remasters. ESG politically correct CRAP has replaced risk taking and originality. When is the last time a game pushed the boundaries of what gaming can be in terms of not just entertainment but art? I still remember how I felt watching some of the in game cutscenes in the original Bioshock being completely IN AWE on my Xbox 360. Or how fresh it felt to use the thumbstick to mix up potions in a circle like a cauldron in Bayonetta?I haven’t felt a moment moment like that in years. That’s what gaming is missing. The early 2000s were full of that energy and gaming studios were practically printing money. Not just Xbox but gaming in general needs to go back to not apologizing for making products that push boundaries instead of making people feel comfortable or playing it safe. I’ll be waiting. Are you up for it? 💪🏿🇺🇸🔥🇺🇸🔥🇺🇸🔥✊🏿

@@javybeaz3236 It's no secret that their strategy is to do away with consoles altogether. They're going to be a publisher, and will get out of the console business. Just... not quite yet. It's coming though. In the next couple "generations".
Colt let's be honest the whole market is crazy right now but maybe it is time for them to seriously think about being a publisher to all platforms at this point. I would even consider a name change as well honestly for the hardware and studios. Instead of Xbox Studios change to Microsoft Studios, and for the hardware side take the Surface name. It appears that team is working on the hardware anyway. Regardless, I think it is clear to many now no matter how much a company has in financial power it doesn't mean an open checkbook or success. Each division at MS still has to pull their own weight and has financial obligations they need to meet. I still think Game Pass is a solid solution, but they need to find ways to get the numbers up for its success. Perhaps releasing games would help, lol. On the console side, I still think they need to provide a solution for those that don't like other platforms but to me it would depend on the numbers. If the news we are hearing is correct, it is in a big decline right now especially in EU. Whether that is true or not I do not know but I am sure Xbox does. Regardless of any of the things I mentioned, I think it is a sad day. Not only for the gamers that enjoyed those titles but to the many workers at those studios that may no longer have a job. You have to feel sorry for them and their families. Hopefully they will just move to other studios or projects without losing their jobs. Let's just hope everything works out for them. Thanks for the video.
I think the problem with Tango is that they were Japanese and the heads here in the US couldn’t give a rats ass about that market outside of the constant complaining that we gamers do about the lack of Japanese support.
I read somewhere that They’re closing the studios and moving the employees to differant ones. They’re still gonna work on games. I dont think pple put much effort into thinking about why. They’re merging studios i believe. Probably cos of financial costs.
Only some of the people are merging. I think they called it reprioritization of assets, or something along those lines. The others are being let go and they went on to say they would follow local laws regarding severance etc. Hopefully the ones let go, rather than merging, could still apply for these other studios, although you could argue if they'd even want to after this.
A little dramatic Colt "turmoil" lol its simple the games has to make money, period. HiFi Rush was a games award nominee and that didn’t save the studio. Obviously they were trying to make money when they put it on PS5 along with the others. It’s a reality that if you don’t sell, you won’t be around. Starfield sold, and HifiRush didn’t. We protect developers in times like this, but review bomb them when we get mad at them. We can’t have it both ways.
All of those studios are losing money. Not surprised at all. It's not like they shut them down just to be dicks. No matter how much the fans love a series, it doesn't matter when they are losing Microsoft money long term. Not surprised at all.
Arkane wanted to cancel Redfall (because it wasn't turning out well), but Microsoft pushed them to finish it because they wanted a live service game. So, Arkane is now paying for Microsoft's bad decision. You're okay with that? Also, do you remember when Microsoft said they were completely happy with Hi-Fi Rush's performance, and they were investing more in Tango? What happened to that? They didn't say Hi-Fi Rush was losing money or that Tango was losing them money.
The only reason Tango is axed is because they probably wanted to go third party.. and MS just decided to close them instead... I bet they will create a studio and make games for sony!
The answer is no they’ll be fine. It’s just a big corporation doing budget cuts to save money. There’s a solution to this problem and it’s simple just make great fantastic games without spending so much freaking money. We don’t need graphical masterpieces we just want good games.

Fork em, they don't deserve our business. Indie devs do it with almost nothing and make better games anyway.
Nope, I threw the white towel…
Sad…
It keeps getting worst and worst
I'll be honest, regardless of platform, games haven't been as good as they were in the 80s-2000s. Too much deadlines and crunches has ruined the magic games used to possess. Not a single game in the last 10 yrs has held my attention for more than a year whereas back in the day, several games I was playing for years on end.
I've lost faith too. Not going to bank on them getting it together anymore.
Tango Gameworks should not have been axed
What is going on with Xbox right now? What is going on indeed? What do you think is going on?

Jim Ryan was right. Gamepass is unsustainable
Preach. Again, it’s let down after let down and these one console champions do nothing but make excuse after excuse.

This is exactly what is happening to the entire gaming industry. People are so much more indecisive these days with their precious time. It's the tablets, the smartphones, the PCs, the consoles, the smart watches, and whatever else it out there. The entire entertainment world is too saturated with movies, short clips, TV shows, and video games. This is sink or swim. I don't blame XBOX, nor Microsoft. That's just how business works.
Saturo Iwata took a PAYCUT when the WiiU failed. Switch went on to crush. Xbox terminates its best developer and spends millions on legal fees to spend billions to buy another dev when they can't manage the devs they have.

Xbox will put their games on other platforms including competing consoles as PlayStation and Nintendo.
Sony will do the same with PC.

What happened to "not worried PC master race not being affected we get the games anyway" response to the acquisitions when people showed concern?
We do get a lot of the games anyway, but if some stupid, overzealous corporation snatches up every studio they can find and then starts shuttering them, nobody gets anything.
We're almost 4 years into this console generation and I'm not sure there's really 5 games that make it worth it.
On the ps5 side there are Hfw, returnal, stellar Blade, ff7 remake and rebirth, ff16, astro's playroom, spiderman 2 (haven't played it myself yet), ratchet and clank rift apart.
As for xbox I'd agree they haven't really got a title that stands out. I'm not trying to hate just the facts. The only title I would truly recommend on xbox side is the 2 Ori titles they really are worth playing. Good old fashioned 2d side scroller with modern beautiful graphics, decent sound track and story.
Ps honestly isn't much better. They lack variety and stellar blade was a dissapointment. I have next to no faith in either of these companies just playing old games now.

It's really sad for Arkane and Tango, Prey, Evil Within, Dishonored where great games but probably the talent who made those games already left..
I stopped paying for Gamepass as Microsoft need to focus on more Halo games. Having a game every 10 years is disgusting
"...if you lose most of the people, what can you do?"
What does any business do when they lose people?
Mean while, Nintendo had an investors phone call/meeting and are shouting success, with the president of the company ssying the next Nintendo system will be announced this fiscal year.
Sony and Microsoft are absolute shit lately
Xbox has been absolutely shit for over 10 years now. They just don’t understand gaming.
Nintendo is having one of the worst software years in over a decade, where PlayStation is having one of the best!?
Literally what are you smoking!? PlayStation has like 10 releases in 2024 that are performing phenomenally! Stop the lies.
Agreed both are doing horrible.. but I am not simpimg for any company.. but its funny seeing ponys in here acting like sony is better .. Sony has a whopping 2 more games than Xbox that I play .. thats nothing to brag over .. and they are the same games over and over .. they both need to get it together
Always gotta bring Sony into it, instead of recognizing the actual problems with Xbox
@saesang352 I am pretty sure we arw calling them both out.. guess you don't keep up with sony and the crap they just pulled with 2 games .. maybe it's cause we don't simp for a company and can call out everyone's crap .. also half the comments in here are from ponys so I am pretty sure they brought sony in here !!!
Tango Gameworks really hurt. I can't believe they are closing that studio. Major mistake!
Buying studios just to shutter them. These are indeed the dark ages of gaming....
Did the say anything about the people??
Lesser studios merged with the same ppl maybe.
They will NEVER catch PS. Its OVER. PS5, PS6 ,and PS7 will win too
The people from these studios are going into Zenimax and BGS. Of course not everyone, but the essential people who do the most contribution on a development scale.
@@javybeaz3236 It's no secret that their strategy is to do away with consoles altogether. They're going to be a publisher, and will get out of the console business. Just... not quite yet. It's coming though. In the next couple "generations".
@@Umael84 You expect Japanese from Japan to move over to USA? (TANGO)
Thanks for the video.
being all in on gaming doesn't mean keeping every studio open forever. people need to learn business.
Yet y'all here were ok with them buying up companies even you colt
I think that Tango couldn't find the proper leadership after those top 2 guys left.
Tango was done before they got bought out
I think the problem with Tango is that they were Japanese and the heads here in the US couldn’t give a rats ass about that market outside of the constant complaining that we gamers do about the lack of Japanese support.
Xbox has disappointed me
I read somewhere that They’re closing the studios and moving the employees to differant ones.
Sad news for all, feel sorry for all who have lost their jobs, hope they find new better paying jobs soon
The same people that review bombed RedFall are complaining that MS cut them. 🤔
Lol these guys live off of the Xbox doom and gloom.
Honestly I didn't care about the game the second I saw the aftermath lol. I'm Xbox but I'll call out Microsoft or the fanboys if I need to
Dont think the Xbox division wanted this, it looks like the big wigs in Microsoft have over ruled them.
they surely broke their promise of developer and creativity empowerment.
Fallout 4 is the hot game right now. A game almost 10 years old. Bridge consoles.
The only reason Tango is axed is because they probably wanted to go third party.. and MS just decided to close them instead... I bet they will create a studio and make games for sony!
Playstation guy here - definitely not gloating, never have, never will. It's just a sad, sad day all around (actually, the last year, in general...)
Make a great game (HiFi Rush) get shut down...
Make a bad game (Redfall) get shut down...
Cant have shit under Xbox.
PC it is…
Doesn't change anything, games from this now closed studios won't magically appear on PC. This affects both console and PC.
The answer is no they’ll be fine. It’s just a big corporation doing budget cuts to save money. There’s a solution to this problem and it’s simple just make great fantastic games without spending so much freaking money. We don’t need graphical masterpieces we just want good games.
You reap what you sow, Xbots.
These devs were very creative and talented people. Maybe they are making a Fallout studio
sure we need GTA online competitor from bethesda/xbox where every studio makes minigames to giant online environemnt... a bit a la ubi pirate game.
Im more and more worried external factors may ruin even GTA 6, flagship among games.
Evil Within 1 and 2. Were the Best, better then resident Evil. Spencers FIRED
@@javybeaz3236Evil Within 1 was literally the worst game of 8th gen. What are you even talking about? Are you high?
