    As a Gas Station owner I already knew this, but not in this much detail or a diagram, I didn't know what the effect was called but I certainly knew it was mechanical. Here's something you may not know, the pump nozzle( the handle and everything besides the hose) is surprisingly cheap, while some models may run a little better or be built better they can be purchased for under $14. The safety mechanism does fail, but there aren't many ways to test pumps to see when they are going to fail, some may work for years or fail a week out of the box. This is why it is still a law for you to be attending the pump so it is not to overfill and not the owners fault that you were irresponsible. Here's a tip if you ever notice this mechanism going off when you know your tank is not full this is because the pump isn't all the way in your tank or something is blocking it causing gas to flow up the tube, you see their is often a metal flap in your newer cars between the outside air and the tank, so if this happens just take the pump out and reinsert it into the tank. Finally a safety tip, if under any circumstance a fire occurs at the pump don't remove the nozzle from your cars tank, your car will not explode, there isn't enough oxygen in the tank for the fuel to burn so just the fuel and gas on the outside catch fire leading you to believe the flame will reach the tank and blow up. It would eventually happen but not if you rush to the attendant and have them press the emergency stop button to prevent anymore gas from flowing and to activate the on site fire suppression system or any near by fire extinguisher.

      it also is stupid that most don't have a manual by hand shutoff like they used to. if what you said above were to happen in the past you could flip a lever were you store the nozzle to stop the flow.

    • @EqualsThreeable
      @EqualsThreeable Рік тому +1

      @@DCMAKER133 Actually the lever is still there on most dispensers. Its usually plastic, it detects when the nozzle is hung up. If you were to press it up for 2-3 seconds the flow would stop in all actualities. However, that is my experience with most dispensers I have come across.

    • @DCMAKER133
      @DCMAKER133 Рік тому +1

      @@EqualsThreeable the lever has been moved to inside the top hole where you push the nozzle into. That's not something you can easily push up with your hand compared to the old ones where you have to flip the base of the nozzle stand up and down. (At least from what I have seen and understand. I could be mistaken)

      He doesn't explain it very well. Seems like he only has a surface level understanding itself. "Fluid can be gas", I mean C'mon. I know he's talking about gasoline specifically. And not gas, as in the elemental state. But he should specify. It's little things like that which ad to confusion.

    • @iCommentify1
      @iCommentify1 3 роки тому +1

      @@janegoodall1837 Since gas (the elemental state) is considered a fluid in the context of physics/fluid mechanics, and "fluid" can mean liquids, gases, and plasmas, that is actually what I thought he meant when he said "And remember fluid can be gas, it can be liquid", not gas(oline). But... then he says "it doesn't have to be water or something", which seemed pointless. Now I saw your comment and I don't know what he meant anymore LOL

    • @mrjimi1
      @mrjimi1 3 роки тому +2

      @@janegoodall1837 No, what he is saying is that fluid dynamics works with gases, liquids and even solids, more specifically, that fluid does not mean liquid, we only associate it that way because liquids are more obviously fluids in our everyday lives. Though I'll grant you , he doesn't explain it very well. Honestly, this seems a fairly simple solution, not complex. As you fill the tank, the air in the tank has to go somewhere. The nozzle takes some of it and as there is less air in the tank the pressure coming up that tube lessens past some balance point and the trigger releases. It's ingenious in its simplicity. Like a thermostat. It takes a fairly simple concept and applies it it a useful way.

    He forgot to mention how the increase in air density or the movement of air in the pipe creates the vacuum that releases air from the diaphragm. Its more complex than that. You either have an electro mechanical valve that opens when the sensor senses increase pressure or a mechanical release valve that opens when a certain amount of pressure is put on it by the increased air pressure in the diaphragm. These mechanical valves are similar in design to the emergency valves on propane tanks or the air feed valves you use to put air in a tire.

Then Someone start to think: If i put this a container and keep supplying fire and fuel constantly, I can move things! Then people start to make better...and better engines... Lot´s of people loose heads, hands and fingers during the process... But essentially it was done this way...

      Guys could you explain the process in a bit more detail? I'm quite good in physics and I've been discussing the video with a friend who's a mechanical engineer graduate from Cambridge University but we still do not fully grasp the mechanism.. Thanks! :)

    • @sadhaka007
      @sadhaka007 10 років тому

      Stelios Serghiou Since there is low pressure on the other side of venturi, the air is sucked into the pipe (atmospheric pressure is higher than the pressure inside the nozzle). This air keeps the diaphragm inflated as well. When the petrol reaches the small hole, it tries to fill up the tube. But petrol being of higher density than air the suction process become harder and vacuum is created within the small tube. Since vacuum has lower pressure than the air pressure present in the inflated diaphragm, it discharges. The air in the diaphragm discharges or deflates which activated the auto shut off.

    That was a very confusing way to explain it, it is a lot simpler than you make it sound. Basically as you pump gas into your tank the air that is in the tank is displace and pushed up through a small hole in the nozzle, and into Basically a rubber boot. This diaphragm or rubber boot, while inflated, holds the shut off valve open. as the tank fills up, the amount of air being displaced decreases. At some point the amount of air being displaced is to low to hold the diaphragm, and the diaphragm collapses. Once it collapses the shut off plate falls down cutting off fuel.

    • @kingkevin267
      @kingkevin267 7 років тому +15

      Vlatko.R don't do that it is a waste of money and harmful to your car. When the pump first shuts off, there is still a small amount of space at the top. When you keep pumping you over flow the tank. That over flowed fuel is caught is what is the evaporative emissions system. As you pump fuel a small amount of fuel evaporates, and is released into the air. This fuel is harmful to the environment, and if built up enough could cause a explosion. To prevent that, they a charcoal canister by the tank. These vapors are caught by the charcoal inside the canister, and clean air is what is sent back into the pump, for the shut off. When you keep pumping you are no longer sending vapors into there, your sending straight liquid fuel. That fuel saturates the charcoal. The charcoal gets to saturated and no longer works. Then your check engine light comes on, and you need a new one. So not only you wasting money for fuel that isn't going into your tank, but your also possible damaging your car, the environment, and risking causing a explosion.

      GlzMo1234 Thought the same thing.
      - The explanation of the Venturi effect is wrong (The pressure before and after the "pinch" is equal. It drops IN the bottleneck not after)
      - Also density is not "heavy". Its either low or high.
      Not mentioning the akward "gags" at the beginning of the Video.
      When you want to do an explanatory Video please check your facts.
      Did i mention mention youre not funny?
      Just my 2 cents.

      +GlzMo1234 I shut it off after about 45 seconds. After he said (0:39) "after the pinch.. after it goes through the pinch it becomes compressed, and as its velocity speeds up, the pressure on the other side of the tube actually decreases".....
      After that mess of a sentence I couldn't bare to watch anymore. Let me explain why that sentence is so confusing (and just terrible) so you don't think I'm just randomly bashing the video.
      1. "and as it's velocity speeds up" -- Velocity doesn't speed up, the gas does.
      2. "and as it's velocity speeds up" -- The fact that this causes the velocity to increase requires explanation, or at least some form of acknowledgement.
      3. "the pressure on the other side of the tube" -- Where is the other side of the tube? Do you mean other side of the pinch? If so, which side is the 'other side'.

    I’m a an engineer and I used to work for the company that originally created that design. I can confirm that you are correct in your assessment of how it works. Also, most gas nozzles have a second diaphragm or plunger (not membrane) that deflects when there is pressure in the fuel line. It is used for prepay fill up. When you hit the prepay amount the dispenser shuts off, the pressure in the nozzle drops and that second diaphragm which is spring biased up will move and shut the nozzle off. There is a third shutoff in some nozzles that is called an attitude device. When a … moron… pulls a flowing nozzle out of a car’s fill pipe, a ball bearing blocks the pickup tube and shuts the nozzle off

    To me, it's counterintuitive that the pressure behind the narrowed tube would be lower. It seems like it should be higher. If you pinch off a hose the area behind it expands due to higher pressure.

    As a gas station attended I learned about this years ago, it still baffles my customers when some of them don't know you can do this. They are like, is it going to stop by itself? Now sometimes, rarely, but this mechanical stopping mechanism sometimes fails, if the diaphragm pocket of air is busted or the straw is busted, I've had overflow incidents. Customers always try to blame it on me, we replace them when they are expected to go, but no amount of safety guards can always prevent an incident. This is why, as a customer you are to always stand by the pump, no matter how cold it is; and I know it's cold in Michigan, you have to attend the pump. Put away your cell phone so you can be observant, turn off your engine, make sure you touch metal other than the pump if your car seat or shoes make you prone to static shocks. Finally, if it didn't need to be said before, and it shouldn't, no smoking anywhere on the premises, why would you?

    • @jacobmarciniec4143
      @jacobmarciniec4143 6 років тому +12

      Revi M Fadli The mix up is that "gas" has two definitions. "Gas" is a state of matter, just like "liquid" is a state of matter. But "gas" is also commonly used to refer to "gasoline", a (usually) liquid fuel. What confuses people even more is "fluid". People often use "fluid" and "liquid" as synonyms, but technically they are not. A fluid is anything that is in the gasious or liquid (or plasma, if you like) state of matter.
