Interesting- I stumbled across the Maono A04 and it’s also pretty decent for the price. Seems like they make mics that are pretty easy to recommend for anyone who’s looking to jump into better-than-built-in audio.

@@Podcastage that is weird! I just got it last month so I figured you got it recently too. I will say, those Maono reps are resilient. I turned down reviewing this on a few occasions, but they kept coming back. I agreed to do one as long as I got an additional mic to giveaway 😂. However, giveaways have become a bit of a headache recently. I have had several people try to pose as the winner… Luckily they didn’t get away with it. I can’t imagine trying to do a giveaway with how many subs you have. I am sure there would be a tremendous amount of BS. It sucks that some people have to ruin the fun for everyone.

@@AudioHotline I refuse to work with them based on the never ending emails. If that's how annoying they are before they've sent you anything, I can't even begin to imagine how awful they are once they've sent you something. I just bought this last year because someone recommended it and I can't turn down an XLR/USB dynamic, but the e-mails always put me off. Then I figured, fuck it. It's sitting htere gathering dust. Let's give it a go. Borg brain moment I guess.

Very nice review, which I enjoyed even though I bought a Maono AU-HD300T before I saw your review. I wanted a dynamic mic because I'm in a noisy environment; I have a condenser mic, an ancient Teac, but it picks up way too much noise (outside traffic, air cond, etc.)
This mic has a great cardioid pattern, when I've got it set up it rejects almost all the exterior noises I don't want, so it's perfect for me doing voice work. I'd still like an audio interface, though I'm using both Voicemeeter Banana and Audacity, so I get pretty clean sound in the end.
After seeing & hearing all the comparisons, I'm happier than ever with this mic! Yes, the Shure & the Neumann did sound a bit better- but at their prices, that's no wonder. For my needs the Maono is the bee's knees!

To be perfectly honest, the comparisons to the U87Ai isn't useless.
It provides a reference against one of the most common voiceover mics out there for folks who are less educated. Also outlines the real difference between cheaper mics and more expensive ones.
Start comparing everything to the SM7B as well as the 87!

  • @Jayrod64

The Samson Q2u has been my main microphone for almost 6 months now. It has better handling noise rejection in my opinion, and I just really love the way it sounds. The Samson Q2u easily one of the best USB/XLR Microphones in it's price range. It does indeed sound hotter than the Maono, but it honestly sounds better to my ears.

I'm curious as to why manufacturers keep making USB dynamic mics with low volume pre-amps.
That pretty much necessitates something like a cloudlifter and an interface anyway to add enough clean gain, which kind of defeats the purpose of a cheap USB mic.

Nice "radio voice" mic, actually. Way better than the scratchy treble of the Q2U or the wooly Q9U, not as bright as the ATR2100s, not to mention very low noise. I bet pitting this against some popular podcasting mics may yield some surprising results. Just who knows whether current production samples are still behaving like this in the USB audio department.

This mic is sold for less than $60 in my country. Whereas samson q2u is sold at $90. Maybe maono decided to catchup the market by releasing the same type of mic at affordable price. The dollar conversion save me a few thousands on mic. Comparing INR 3412 for maono to INR 6900 for samson q2u. Audio Technica 2100x cost more than a dynamic mic plus an interface cost.

My preferences for the voice after a quick listen: the Shure mv7 far ahead, then for sounds with some sibilance the ATR210???X then this more "mid tone" Maono with those nice accessories. The first Audio Technica USB sounds bad for vocals. The Q9U was also really bad without mid-boost. When playing heavy, the Mono AU-HD300T made the strings of the acoustic sound dead like they were stretched from age and need replacing. The Behringer XM8500 for $20 (XLR, not USB) sounds better for acoustic as well as possibly electric guitar recording. Can't argue with all the "free" accessories included with the mic.

I'd recommend ordering from some place that would allow for some kind of return. I think you might be able to get away with it in discord. Discord has an auto gain feature if I'm not mistaken, and even if they don't, there's the option for those on the call to give you a bit of boost which should be sufficient. But still, I'd suggest buying from some place that has a good return policy and if you end up thinking it's too quiet, then you can return it and try a different mic. Good luck.

Does anyone know that if you have a SHURE SM-57 if you need a pre-amp to use it for vocals. I know the SM-58 is better for vocals, but I'm looking for an all around mic mostly for instruments and sometimes for vocals (with a windshield/pop filter). Also, do you need an audio interface with it?

Quite impressed with this for spoken word considering how cheap it is.

The Q9u sounds the worst, it's already only £99 on the UK Amazon. The Maono sounds like a condenser, similar to Blue Yeti, picks up a bit more of the room echo than the other dynamics. The Q2u needs a pop filter to remove the harsh sibilants.

Does anyone know if this mic 🎤 is compatible with chrome book lap top? That is my issue finding a mic that actually works with my lap top.

    Maono AU-HD300T
Samson Q2u: Seemed much more present. Makes the Maono seem mufffled.
ATR2100-USB: Better than the Maono but not great.
ATR2100X-USB: Also not great. Maybe not as good as the ATR2100-USB.
Q9u: Better than the Maono, but sounded off.
    MV7: Worse than the Maono.
U87: Sounded "farther away" than some of the others.
Listening on DT-770 Pro headphones plugged into a FocusRite 2i2 3rd gen.
