- Today I want to talk to you about the Harley Davidson Iron 883 as a daily driver/commuter.
I break down the HD Iron 883's ability to ride the back roads as well as extended highway trips.
I have a few recommendations for a longer commute but, a stock Iron 883 fulfills all of my needs as a daily commuter.

I did 13000 miles in 9months commuting on a 2004 883, a car driver knocked me off and ended our affair;
I am at present commuting 58miles a day on a 1992 xl1200, she's into the garage this week to have rocker box oil leaks repaired, but both motorcycle definitely up to the job

I have a 2017, it is a blast to ride down some of the roads here. I ride daily and it never disappoints. For some reason though, I have a really hard time trying to convince it that 70 is way over the speed limit but it seems happy there. Most of the time I am fine with no windshield, but I will still be adding one soon for those longer rides. I will have to say that it is the best thing I have put between my legs in a while! I so love my Harley!
My 883 2018 is my daily ride to work. Given the traffic congestions in the Philippines even in our rural area, the iron is still easy and light enough to maneuver. I scraped my footpegs 2x, in a twisties going up to our summer capital ,BaguioCity.
The first time i scrapped my pegs scared the crap outta me

cool bikes I daily ride and my sportster has gotten me through so much weather and miles over the past 10 months, it was an 883 body but the engine was swapped to a 1200 (not bore kit actually swapped) but now I've upgraded to a heritage softail. 6 speed 96 cubic in. I just needed something bigger for my height and saddlebags i love it. just like watching these sportster videos because it what got me into buying one

I have just finalised the paperwork on an brand new 2019 iron, im in Australia so for me its a 15k purchase, your vid summed up the reasons i chose the sporty in the fisrt place ,, the speed limit in aus on most roads is 100kph, so im pretty sure im going to be fine 🙂,

My son bought his first bike in Dec 2020, an 883, for pleasure, but also commute. Lives in San Francisco Bay Area , worst traffic there is. Absolutely loves it, style, ride, great first bike. I just upgraded to SE 1200 for Christmas , it added more power and he keeps the style he loves. He’s 6’3”, 180. And he fits well. Has about a 25 mile commute mostly freeway.

I ride mine to work every day on the interstate at 70 mph and it does great! I have the 2020 883.. I would love something a little bigger but I am good for now

I happen to ride a 1995 1200 & love it & commute with it. A buddy of mine has an Iron & that bike is awesome, it's everything you described & then some. We both ride our bikes pretty hard & they beg for more & never let us down. The Iron can do anything you want it to, commute, twisties or all day rides, new sub here, nice vid!

I’ve been commuting on a 1200 for years, rpm’s at 70 is 3200. I’d lose the fork bag though, it’s a air restriction to the top end. A swing arm bag works well.

Great video and review. I commute 44 miles one way each day in the summer time on my Sporty 1200. I love it. I have scraped my pegs several times but you have really be leaning over to do it. It can be scary but it’s a lot fine. Be safe. 👍

I have an 07 883 custom. I use it for commuting and it is perfect for commuting. I did put bags, windshield, python slip-ons, and a backrest.
I’d like to add a step up seat and passenger pegs so my wife can ride every now and then. I’ve got a swing arm bag coming to make it easier to carry my camera equipment. After that I just want to do some cosmetic enhancements and maybe a stage one.

I bought an 883 in 06& put 20000 miles on it the first year. I used that bike for 8 years commuting. Did I mention I'm a drywall finisher so if you saw me on my commute I might have a grip full of hand tools & a pair of stilts strapped to my bike rain or shine in Washington state. I wore that bike out ,worth every penny.

I have the ‘22 year (gunship grey) model, love it. My only true gripe about the bike is really the stock seat and suspension. With the seat I feel like at higher speeds I will slip off, and with suspension (because I am a bigger guy) I can feel those ghost potholes deep in my lower spine x.x otherwise than that, very great MC if you like being a minimalist : such as myself.

I commute 80 miles daily, mostly highway. On my XL883C , It's good during slower traffic for lane splitting , though when the pace picks up more power is desired. Out here in Northern California most folks travel highways at about 85mph where the 883 is just about wrung out. Plus it's not the plushest bike on POTHOLES ! So finally my VStrom1000 and FJR1300 are my preferred high-speed mile munching machines for surviving crazy commutes !! But then , riding on smooth canyon roads during the weekend sure is and always has been Excellent Therapy for the Wild Workweek Worries & there the Sportster soothes my soul like no other bike does. Just add more travel and cush via Progressive Suspension Fork springs and 13.5" shocks..... ahhhhhhh, now that's just right .
Looking at buying this bike. Good to know about how it’s handles and performs at high speed. Worried about scrapping the pegs or exhaust.

You can definitely commute on a Sporty, I did. I'm over 6 feet tall and the only problem that I've ever had was with mid controls. As long as I have forward controls, I'm plenty comfortable and have never had any problem on the highway. You're doing a great job on your vids! Keep it up brother and keep the shiny side up!
@@ZackFirstPersonThe forward controls that I put on my Sporty are Harley Davidson brand. My wife has aftermarket ones ( I can't remember the brand) on her Sporty, and mine are a little longer than her's.

But my 2005 Sportster 1200 custom in 2013 and since then have put over 60,000 miles on it using it mainly as a commuter bike and just riding whenever the hell I can. I've worn it out and now this year I'm going to have to go ahead and rebooting it new swing arm bushings I'm going to put a new front end on it for 2016 48 so it'll have the beefier front forks and wider front wheel. But yes you can use a Sportster for a commuter bike
Hi Zack. I own a brand new 2018 Iron 883 I only just bought it as old stock. It was sitting in the showroom & they wanted to restock. My Iron idols at 1000 & 100ks / 60mph is 3000 on the nose. Yours does seem to revving high. What do you idol at?

Sorry dude just looked it up. 60mph is 96.5 kph. So I'm no mechanic just a enthusiasts but our bikes are running at different revs.

Hey this is a great video, I drive about 40 min to work 90% highway 10% city. I live in NJ and during my commute i go the opposite way of traffic each time so the Instate is usually just me and a couple others. I live in NJ and I’m taking my safe course test next week. I was thinking on getting a iron and driving it around the city i live in and once i get used to it use it as a daily in the summer to get to work. Do you think this bike would be a decent bike to start with ?

I literally just bought one of these for my daily commute. I don’t ever use the freeway so I was like hey! Get a motorcycle. I’ve had it since July 1st. I just got my endorsement today so I’m finally legal. I can’t stop riding it. I think of things to do so I have to go ride around

I daily commuted to London on my sportster for 14 years, all year round, 90 miles a day. She has now done 96000 miles and still has the original clutch. I might change it at 100.000 whether she needs it or not 😊😊
A sissy bar might also be good for larger items and you could use a bungee cord things down.

Yes, you can daily drive/commute on a 2019 Harley Davidson Iron 883. But you won't look good doing it, because of all that black. For the same reason nobody will see you because you just blend in with the road. It's just a flat black blob. I ride a 2006 1200C on a pretty much daily basis. It has bright shiny silver paint, lots of bright polished aluminum, and tons of chrome. It has aftermarket slip ons, and the carburetor has been retuned for them. Easy to do when all you have to deal with are jets, needles, and a pilot screw. No computer tuners to deal with. I live near Phoenix, AZ, the hottest place in the country, and my engine does not overheat. The main reason Harley engines overheat is because they are being run way too lean. That bike is probably running somewhere close to 14:1 air/fuel ratio. My 2006 is in the 12:1 range, a significant difference when it comes to engine temperature.

Here in New Jersey there’s so much traffic all at various speeds and I have been on a few different highways 80+ miles an hour with no problem. The highest speed I’ve ever taken the iron is it 92 miles an hour and the RPMs are at about 5000 to 5100 RPMs.
Just in case if you’re wondering how fast your iron can go the 883 has a top speed of 113 miles an hour.

F.N.G Moto The red line starts at 5500 rpm and maxes out at 8000. I never hit 5500. Even if on a rare occasion you go 80mph all day long on the highway you’re at about 4200 rpm. The bike is tuned to handle that no problem

Get a pair of jeans. Buy 1 quart black water based latex paint. Liberally paint the jeans (and jean jacket) with the paint (outside only). Let dry and cure for two days. Apply another coat and again cure for two days. Latex water based paint is rubberized and non toxic. The clothing becomes water proof and wind proof and resembles leather. And, you can use any color you want. It will be slightly stiffish until the bend places form to use. Make water release holes in the bottom of the cuffs. You can make a red collar and wrist wind guards for ease of sight by other drivers if proffered. redo any places water finds a way in. It can all be done over and touched up at any time if need be.
I put a larger by 2 teeth front final drive sprocket. Just a bit better for freeway and about $150 bucks a nice modification.

The Sportsters are a good line. I had a 1200 custom which I gave up. It didn't suit my commute. 110 miles round trip into Manhattan then back to the suburbs. The problem was the first 5 miles of my afternoon trip home. Start of rush hours. It would take up to 90 minutes to accomplish. Were it not for this kind of tortuous grind I would still have my custom.
Wow! That’s an impressive commute. Do you still ride? If so, what did you get instead of the custom?
Went back to a metric, Vulcan 900 to be exact. I loved that Sportster. Put over 12k on the odometer in one season. I do miss it. But that 5 mile grind was killing her. By the end of that season the torture began to take its toll. Coil burned out, drive belt damaged, intake seals melted, rocker box gaskets shot, crankcase vent shot, springplate in clutch pack grenades, clutch basket bearing damaged with shrapnel, brakes wore out, front brake line leaking, plugs needed replacement, both throttle cables worn out. I did all the labor, close to $1K in parts. Worst part was waiting for stuff on backorder, sometimes over a month. After all this I couldn't put myself or that bike through this again.
Harley's are excellent machines, a work of art in some cases, but they simply aren't suited to a daily bumper to bumper grind lasting an hour or more. A commute like yours would have been a blessing.
Antonio Franqui I actually looked at a 900 Vulcan before I purchased my Iron. That is a very slick machine and is built very well. I think you made a well thought out decision.
I think my only complaint for me on commute with the Iron 883 would be the seat as my daily drive is pretty (just under 100 miles round trip) far. My 2016 Iron 883 didn't have the most comfortable seat stock however the one on my 2019 Iron 1200 is way better. I'm not sure if it was improved on the 2019 Iron 883, but it sure doesn't seem so much from what I've seen.
The seat isn’t terrible. But I am looking forward to replacing it.

Interestingly enough, Zack..... at your 80 mph, my Bolt 950 is turning 4,299 rpm's in 5th gear as well..... but my top end is 5800 rpm. I really think HD should have made those engines to top out at anything over 5252 rpm's,( torque = HP).... say even 5500.... Then I might have bought the 1200 Super Low that I wanted instead. ( yep , its my fave HD).....Seems that HD has some weird idea that an under square engine, (Bore < Stroke), can't rev high, Yet Yamaha did so with the 250 Viragos, ( 8000 rpm on them).
With the 950 I have, it's pretty much a square engine, Bore ~= Stroke, ~ 5800 to 6000 RPM= rev limiter. And my Bolt is 27" unladen seat to ground, mid controls, 37 degree lean both ways before pegs scrape. Sounds like an HD, Looks like an HD sportster. Can do the same external mods, and 57 MPG ain't too shabby either when running it hard. .....So if you went from a Ninja to HD and then if you decide HD isn't your cuppa tea, try wandering over to Yamaha, ( they still sell the Strykers (~80 cu in ?? ), down your way apparently....), otherwise try the XVS950 Bolt.

I would recommend it only because it fits me so well and it’s exactly what I was looking for. I love the aftermarket availability. I’d go with whichever one fits you the best and does what you want

Ducati is one of the most unreliable motorcycle brands out there. If you actually do buy a Ducati, any Ducati for that matter do a Google search first on the reliability.
Looks like you're not allowed to lane split, that helps in traffic. It's legal in Australia. Take it easy🍻🤙
Nope I’m not. California is the only state where you’re allowed to lane split as far as I know.
With all of California’s laws and over regulations it seems so odd that California allows lane splitting, because it is very dangerous.

What highway you rideing on
I'm thinking about getting a bike for commuting to college which is like a 30-45 min drive on the highway. is this a good bike for that or should I do like a Honda CB300r or Duke 390?
I don’t think you would have an issue on an iron. But there’s a lot to take into account. Do you experience a lot of stand still traffic? If so, I’d go with a liquid cooled engine. Also, do you think you’d like a sport bike more or a cruiser style?
Zack First Person uh so I live I GA and attent Georgia State university, so I have to drive to college everyday and I’m driving in the interstate 90% of the time. That’s why I was trying to decide which one would be the best. If you could tell me your opinion and why that would be highly appreciated.
I haven’t experienced the other bikes so it’s hard for me to compare. I can tell you I had a ninja and I didn’t like riding it long distance. I wouldn’t think twice about taking my iron on a multi state trip.
For daily commuting, a scooter is better. No gears, and plenty of storage. Scooters today will do highway speeds without a problem.
The sporster 883 is plenty.the old 1200 shovelheads were not as powerful as the 883 trust me.
So I've never owed a bike before, and I don't really know shit, EXCEPT that I think the iron 883 looks perfect to me and I will own one. I know they're a good bike to start out on which is perfect, however I have a few questions. I will definitely be using it to go to work every day, the only thing is, it will be my only means of transportation. How does it do in the rain? How about the winter? I see some people say not possible, however I see some say it's absolutely do able. So what's the deal?
I got caught in a thunderstorm a while back and the bike did fine. It was really crappy for me because I wasn’t prepared. You always need to be more cautious when the roads are wet but I didn’t have a problem with the bike. I haven’t ridden it in the winter so I can’t really say first hand how well it does.
I ride all year round and it is doable, just prepare yourself especially on rainy days with proper gear and easy on the throttle. The only time I'm not riding my bike is when I'm doing alot of overtime, you do not want to ride nor should you, if you are mentally and physically tired, your awareness needs to be there 100%. If you have to ask yourself, "should I take my bike today", don't.

Did you replace your gaskets when you installed or did you run the stock ones?
I should have replaced them but I didn’t. I don’t have any leaks but I’m sure I’ll have to replace them at some point.
