MotorWeek is the record holder of the history of the automobile industry.
When Rolls-Royce told me that the Rolls were made by hand in their factory tour VDO in th 2010th era, I didn't think so.
The 1992th Rolls-Royce Factory Tour VDO of MotorWeek show the real craftsmanship. Thank you MotorWeek.
PS. The new process is not bad but it is not craftsmanship.

I have a 1987 Silver Spur and I visited the factory (now exclusively Bentley) in 2016 (from the USA.)
Our host for the tour had been a leathersmith, working on seats since 1983, and, it turned out that he had crafted the seats in my car. (His initials were on the underside of the cushions)
You don't get that pride of ownership from a Yugo. They are quirky cars, and need constant attention, but, it's all worth it in the end..

I also like to know whats on underside of my cushions, just like any other normal guy.
I took apart whole my car and went to Mitsubishi plant for a tour.
Sadly, they did not knew, what happened to guy called "JAPAN"
      Take it easy, just joking!

Nice and expensive when they are new but depreciate a lot once they are used.

Hard to believe almost 30 years has passed since this segment first aired on Motor Week. It's baffling when Millies comment on how low tech (Doug DeMuro, you listening) these Rolls Royce are when they are 30 years old. Prestigious, elegant & rare they be.

The guy cutting the swath of leather has been eliminated by BMW..... they use photo optics and lasers to get the most cuts out of one swath of leather, then a precision cutting machine to do the cutting. More economical, and far more precise than the human eye.

The "coach built" body shells were actually built at Pressed Steel in Cowley Oxfordshire, a neighbouring facility to the Morris cars factory all owned by British Leyland, of course the end product was so bad they needed major rectification work done (missing welds, dented/rippled sheet metal, misaligned panels etc) before hand, if they attempted to try and improve the quality at Pressed Steel they ran the risk of strike action or sabotage from disgruntled workers

    • @joe6096
      @joe6096 3 роки тому +2

And that's why the British auto manufacturing business was even worse than it was in America in the 70s and 80s. Today I don't think a single English name is an English owned company. They're all owned by either Germany or India.

It was difficult for the workers at pressed steel to have much concern for quality control when they were paid a pittance and made to use knackered outdated equipment, while still being expected to knock out bodies at the same pace as a state of the art company like toyota. This is probably why the only british made cars with any quality say nissan on the badge.

Too bad the video didn't touch upon Rolls Royce's contribution to the war effort with their amazing engines that even ended up in the P-51 mustang I believe, also held many land speed records of the day. Screw the leather stiching & nicely sanded wood in the rolling sofas goes beyond that, amazing history to this company..

    • @larrylaffer3246

It was the prestige of the brand that sold it. Just look at that ugly purple, Thanos looking car they're trying to pass off as a Rollls; Unbelievable. Sure they didn't have all the fun do dads or bells and whistles of a Cadillac or Lincoln but that was never the point nor their audience. "Though fun fact they weren't the first to offer AC as a standard feature in a production car, it was AMC in 68 in their Ambassador line of cars. Unrelated I know just thought I'd mention it, AMC really needs to get more respect."
