same! just sent the video to all my friends and family! its a big change, we gotta beat the masses to getting it so we avoid the rush!
I got it last summer when my DL expired. I had to take half day off to get it. DVMs are always busy.
1) You are not required to get it. If you don't fly or don't mind bringing your passport when flying. For Californians, must show real ID or passport to fly after Oct 1, 2020.
2) If you plan to get it, you have to go into a DMV and bring 3 forms of identification (DL/ID, social security card, and bank statement or utility statement). Make an appointment if you don't have time.
3) The cost is the same.
Trip Astute I got mine last year! It took about two hours even with an appointment only because I mistakenly got in the wrong line!

A friend of my mine was refused access to his bank account at Wells Fargo in N.C. because he didn't have a Federal Id. I personally think the bank teller was wong. Is this a big mistake? He did have a regular state issued driver's licenses.
I just renewed my license this year. I'm from Texas and mine has a gold circle with a white star on it. I just got Global Entry this year too and I was so excited!

@@TripAstute You bet man. I got my Global Entry & TSA Pre done in Vegas and was excited to use it on the flight from there to Reno but it was closed so I was very disappointed. When I flew from Reno home I got to use it and only had to take out my phone and wallet. It was so nice and well worth it since I got it free with my SPG Luxury card. Thanks for all the videos and help from them.

I am in CA and went to get the real ID and they asked for a second proof of residency on the spot, even though the website at the time only asked for one. Luckily I had my insurance documents in my glove box and went out to grab them.
Yeah, the rollout has been a very confusing, especially in CA. A friend of mine had the exact same experience here in Los Angeles! 😬

I applied for a REAL ID DL in California this year. I set an appointment on the DMV website and showed up an hour before I was scheduled. They took me right away and the process was fine for the most part. The only snag I hit was on the proof of residency. They requested at least 2 different documents. I had only 1 on hand, but then they asked if I had my car registration (this works for proof of residence). Thankfully, I did, so I ran to my car and grabbed it. It all worked out from there. It pays to save correspondence relating to your bank/credit cards (not the offers/invitations, but the ones you already have) with at least relatively recent dates leading up to the application.
On a separate note, for my DL and passport photos, I like to dress up in a suit. And I mean full suit. If you wear only the top, you might feel self-conscious. Plus, if you’re wearing a full suit, you’ll have an easier time exuding confidence that you’re a professional. My rationale is that you’ll be stuck with the photo for the next 5 years (10 for passports), so you should look as presentable as possible, even if only a small part of the suit shows up in the photo. But this is just my approach. You should do whatever you’re comfortable doing.
Yeah, I've heard similar stories from friends as well about not realizing the multiple proof of residency documents. It's confusing too since they just changed it to two this year, which I think it confused a lot of people.
Truthfears Guilty I got the DL with REAL ID. The DL is a REAL ID compliant document.

TSA release that passports are accepted for Domestic travels. Real ID is for control, nothing more.

Questions what if somebody is coming from Germany, Italy, Russia, Mexico and there coming to La, Chicago, Washington, Florida what gets done then? or if there returning home what happens now. If you live in Germany you can't go to a Dmv in Chicago what happens now?

A passport (both US and foreign) is considered a REAL ID, so anyone visiting should be ok. Also, you'll want to check your driver's license just to be safe. Since the rule doesn't officially go into effect until next year, you might still have an older license. That's what I have, and it should work until the rule is implemented.
My friend claimed that in the future to travel internationally, a passport and a real ID will need to be presented together. She claimed that it is stated in Miami airport. Does anyone know if this is true or if shes full of BS?
I don't think it's correct. A passport, by default, is a REAL ID. You will only need a REAL ID to travel domestically (without a passport).
When I got to the DMV to get the real ID waiting on the line they told everyone to go on the website to DMV.gov to register once you go thru the question they ask from you at the end they will give u a code number take a picture of that code number then when is time to see the worker for the paperwork they will ask for that code number then they will start to check if everything is ok then you pay 28.00 after that they will send u to take the picture since I am a senior I also took another picture for senior ID that one is free 😬

I live in Washington where we have Enhanced ID. After I looked up what was required on the DMV website, it was a piece of cake.

@@TripAstute Only border States and border Provinces (in Canada) offer Enhanced drivers licenses. I'm temporarily living in the greater Toronto area, Canada, for business, and know many people, both in New York and Ontario who have these. The primary purpose this was done, was to eliminate the need for frequent US and Canadian travelers in these border regions to always carry their passports with them (For example someone who just wants to drive across the border to go shopping, or visit a friend).
@@747-pilot Although only five states bordering Canada offer enhanced ID, any state can participate. Oregon talked about following Washington's lead in offering both an enhanced ID or standard ID. But in the end decided to go with the REAL ID or standard ID instead because it's cheaper to not put RFID chips in the cards. (which are required for enhanced ID)
@@rxtech-fg5on Oh, Ok so I was under the impression that border states/provinces had made a deal with each other. But even so (as you pointed out, in the case of Oregon), I would imagine that non-border states would not want to go through the hassle of implementing the enhanced DL, as there would not be that many takers. And, if I'm not mistaken, REAL ID cannot be used to cross the border, right? (either to go into Canada, or come back to the US)
@@747-pilot Yes, Normal Real ID doesn't work for international land/sea travel. Enhanced IDs meet the requirements for the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (like passport cards), which is more secure than Real ID. Therefore, Enhanced IDs are Real IDs, but non-enhanced Real IDs won't work for crossing borders.
Wondering how US citizens living abroad are able to apply if they have no permanent US residency? Or maybe it's not needed...?
It's probably not needed since you can technically use your passport as your REAL ID. Having a driver's license that is REAL ID compliant is more for convenience. 😊

Yeah, it is definitely a pain if you move around a lot. The good thing is that there are alternative REAL IDs that you can use (e.g., Passport Card, Global Entry card, etc.).

Once you have a Ca. Real ID drivers license, does it automatically come in the mail when renewing online or by mail? I got mine last year and was told that I have to renew my drivers license this September.
It's a good question. I have yet to get my REAL ID compliant CA drivers license. I would imagine that renewing an established REAL ID should be possible via mail, especially during these crazy times.
My MA Driver’s Licence doesn’t expire until 2022. Should I renew my Licence early since I might travel or need to enter a Federal Building after Oct 2020.
It might be worth getting it now. Though the only concern I would have is having to go to the DMV during the pandemic. Since the REAL ID requirement has been extended to at least Oct 2021, it might be worth waiting (to reduce any unnecessary exposure, especially at crowded DMVs).

If your license expired, you're probably in the same boat as me. I didn't have the option to get a REAL ID driver's license the last time I renewed, so mine is non-compliant (and I would guess your license may be as well). When you get back to the US, you'll want to visit the DMV and bring all the necessary documentation to get your updated license. Though keep in mind that you don't have to have a REAL ID driver's license since you can still use your passport as your REAL ID. Having a REAL ID driver's license is more of a convenience. 🤓

No, you still need a passport. The REAL ID is not meant to replace an actual passport. There is something called a Passport Card which can be used instead of a passport book for certain limited scenarios (e.g., border crossings into Mexico and Canada), but I still recommend carrying and using a traditional passport since it gives you the most options.
So question: my wife and I just got married, her name changed and we changed her name via the social security dept. My wife doesn’t drive, so she has a state I.D. instead, did I hear correctly that state I.D.’s are REAL ID ready? We live in AZ if that makes any difference...
Yes, you are correct. State IDs are REAL ID ready. It looks like Arizona calls them "Travel IDs" 😎: azdot.gov/motor-vehicles/driver-services/arizona-travel-id

The review status has been resolved. The DMV sent out letters to anyone that renewed prior to April 29th. All they need to do is sign the letter if it's the same address provided at the time of applying for REAL ID.
Please note that if the person uses a PO BOX - they need to provide 1 of the 2 residency documents need to have BOTH the PO BOX AND a Physical Address on one of them. The other may have either address.

Hi, what about green card is it valid to travel even if we have no real i.d licensed?
Green cards are REAL ID compliant, so it should work. The only exception could be an older green card. I believe they did a refresh of the design about 3-4 years ago, but I'm not sure if the older one is still compliant.
I never had passport my ID is bout to expire in like 2 months as I was trying to renew it online I was asked if i would like to get the standard ID or the new ID which can be used as a passport something not clear to me tho so if I get the real ID and wanna fly any country out of the US does the real ID works as exactly passport?? No, the REAL ID driver's license or state ID will allow you to board domestic flights. For international flights, you will still need a standard passport book. Though a passport book or passport card (which can only be used for specific land and sea entries) are both REAL ID compliant.

All of these videos leave out the most important verification! It's the Proof of Legal presence or citizenship. There has to be a very specific type of birth certificate. It cannot be just the short form birth certificate. It must have the names of both parents present. It must also have a raised seal or colored seal. Yes, a US passport can also be used but the passport also requires the same above stated birth certificate.

It might depend on your state. It seems like every state has different requirements to prove identity and residency.
Ok I just got mine… SSc, birth certificate, utility bill and W2. Not a big deal… how can you NOT have these simple items.
Yeah, it was pretty simple once I had all my documentation lined up. Though it did still require a visit to the DMV in California, which is not always a fun experience. 😂
What do you do if your homeless but still want to fly to see family? I have no resident documents . My license has my old address before being homeless? Does this mean homeless people living in there cars can’t fly? I know many.

Second, I am one who does not have a birth certificate.
My birth certificate is not valid, in that my first name is not listed. My middle name is listed as my first name.
My parents never fixed it, so the name I have had forever is not mine.
I have tried and tried to ask the board of records for my birth certificate, but they say it can't be found.
So what do I do?
Do you have any other form of federal ID? I think you can use a passport, for example, to prove your identity.

@Steve Bollman If you’re renewing your ID, it doesn’t cost extra. Only reason not to do if is if you don’t feel like going to the dmv.

You should check with your local DMV. For California (where we're based), it requires an actual visit to the DMV to show all the documentation before they will issue you a REAL ID.

Yeah, I've heard a lot of stories of people getting denied because their documentation isn't sufficient. I'm curious to see how the renewal process goes next year when my license expires. Just getting a veteran designation on my license was such a pain a few years ago! 😄

My California Drivers license expires in October 2021, and most likely it will be "renew by mail". I'll be damned if I take a day off, just to wait hours and hours at the DMV, and then another couple days to gather all the documentation needed, just so that I can use my license "to board a plane" (rollseyes). As it is, I had to waste a whole day, to go personally to the DMV to take a new updated picture, back in 2016 when I had to renew. Besides, I always carry my passport with me no matter where I travel! It is good that they give people an option, and don't force it down your throat!!

I think it depends on your DMV and your state's regulations. When I got my REAL ID drivers license last year, I did not have to do one. Though I did have to get one a few years ago when I was renewing my drivers license.

You can’t get into military bases with REAL ID! My wife works inside the base and I try to get in, in order to drop her off. The officers and soldiers don’t even know what REAL ID is. I told them, I thought I can enter with a REAL ID. They laugh and say, you better have a real id or else you’ll be in trouble.
I'm not surprised to hear that. I have a veteran designation on my REAL ID, and it definitely does not let me enter any military bases. I still have to use my old military ID. 😄
Why have all this REAL ID confusion when the U.S. could just have a federally issued Compulsory National Identity Card like they have in Europe, where 1 ID is all you need for everything and have Driver's licenses as a supplement to the main ID.
It's a valid point. Though Americans, in general, are very suspicious of federal ID programs (or anything managed by the federal government). It's not right or wrong, but it's part of the US culture. 😐

Here in Malaysia, every info is in our ID CARD. We use our ID CARD as a passport to enter Singapore and it started many years ago.

It's false I'm in Baltimore Maryland and I was required to get a real ID when I renewed my license and I said I wanted a regular license because I have a passport and they said I'm required to get one no exceptions.

I already had a real ID on my drivers license, since my license expired I paid $37,- to renew my license, DMV removed my real ID sign of my class C license, and mailed me a regular class C license, so I to visite DMV in person they charged me another $30,- to switch back my original drivers license with real ID sign on it , this is a real fraud, and new ways to rippingoff seniors in California ???????

I have heard that the Rmv is coming up with old tickets that people have paid off back from 1998 and their is not a thing you can do or say even though you paid them thay just want more money
SS# is not for purposes of ID. Already presented Birth Certificate when I applied for my first driver's license in the '60's. My SS# WAS my DL# til they advised against it. I'm going to say "no" to their little gold star. I don't need no steenking "real" ID. All I need is my DL. Oh, you forgot two pieces of mail verifying your address.

That is correct. When I filmed the video in April 2019, it was slated to take effect in 2020. Though that's now been extended to at least 2021.
Get a passport
Passport will definitely work as a REAL ID. Unfortunately, it's a bit bulky to carry. 🙁

What you didn't mention is that your birth certificate has to have a registration number on it. Mine doesn't. My husband's doesn't. But our city of birth will be glad to send us one for $28. Also, you better not have laminated your birth certificate OR your Social Security card. Unacceptable!!!! Lord forbid that you laminated these important docs to keep them from being damaged.
