In this video Canadian Guitarist/producer Dean Wolfe reacts to Babymetal- first time too!
A LITTLE ABOUT ME: I'm Dean Wolfe, a mostly self-taught Canadian guitarist/composer/multi-instrumentalist/singer/producer/performer. I started out as a full time musician on the road at age 17 for two years, but went part-time ever since while holding day careers including as a chef and in spiritual health care while raising a family.
I've recorded hundreds of my own songs- many being used in media and award winning documentaries etc. I've been in several bands including a prog/jazz fusion act nFuze, performing in International Jazz festivals and jazz clubs. I abandoned the prog genre more or less back in the 1990s but have returned to it now with vigour a full 30 years later- so much prog I've ignored and quite frankly didn't have any idea about. My own prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i detoured into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk and acoustic fingerstyle guitar and ambient electric as well).

Nice pick for the first reaction. If you continue reacting to Babymetal, you'll discover that all their songs are different and that Babymetal is really a live performance group, more like a touring Broadway show.

"Stand up and shout, Shout!, Justice Forever!" - (Road of Resistance) -
BABYMETAL believe that if a song sounds too much like one genre, then it's not a BABYMETAL song.
You can definitely feel the speed metal component in this one though.
This performance was at Saitama Super Arena (SSA) in January 2015, with a sold out crowd of over 20,000.
Guitarists that night were Takayoshi Ohmura and Leda Cygnus. The bassist was BOH, and the drummer was Hideki Aoyama.
Along with guitarist Mikio Fujioka (RIP), that's pretty much the classic Kami Band setup, BABYMETAL's supporting musicians for live shows.
I'm a huge fan of lead singer Su-metal (Suzuka Nakamoto, or "Su"), although I know some folks take a while to get used to her vocals.
I love the contrast. And her solo songs, like 'Rondo of Nightmare' are truly epic.

Good first reaction and welcome to the BABYMETAL Galaxy. Don't let the name put you off, it is basically a pun:
Their name 'BABYMETAL' is not about their age (although when they started in 2010 they were aged 12 and 11 so it probably did play a part too). The name was chosen for two reasons:
    - to symbolize that they gave birth to a new genre of metal music (kawaii metal)
    - because the writing (and pronunciation) in Japanese is nearly identical to the writing of "heavy metal" (and they love a pun):
    BABYMETAL = ベビメタル (be-bi-me-ta-ru)
    heavy metal = ヘビメタル (he-bi-me-ta-ru)
This performance was in January 2015 at Saitama Super Arena with a sold out crowd of over 20,000. The girls (Su-metal, lead vocals, Yuimetal and Moametal, backing vocals, harmonies, dance and in charge of leading the crowd, getting everybody involved) were aged 17, 15 and 15 at that time. Their biggest headline shows to date were at Tokyo Dome in 2016 - they sold it out two nights running - 55,000 people each night.
Herman Li and Sam Totman from DragonForce did the guitar arrangements for this song and played on the studio recording for the album version, so this is pretty much straight speed/power metal. This was the Kami Band's interpretation of the instrumentals.
The Kami Band are their support for all live performances and are among the very best session musicians to be found in Japan. They do rotate in and out depending on their own responsibilities and projects etc, but they have had the same hard core of about half a dozen musicians since 2013 - in this video they were Leda Cygnus and Takayoshi Ohmura on guitars, BOH on his 6 string bass and Hideki Aoyama on drums. Others you are likely to see in other videos are Mikio Fujioka (RIP January 2018) and ISAO, both guitarists.
The song is about forging your own road, not necessarily going the easy way or following the path already made by somebody else, so if the way you want to go has never been explored you may have to get past the resistance of the undergrowth, obstacles, hurdles and things blocking your way etc to find your own way.
It could easily be used to describe BABYMETAL's own story - they could have followed the well trodden path of J-Pop and been very successful, but they chose to go with Metal ... but again they didn't just follow the same old format of every other metal band, they have done it their own way and it hasn't always been an easy route to follow.
So yes their roots are in JPop so your instinct about that wasn't wrong, what they have done is fuse metal with the JPop aesthetics - not as a gimmick, it was intended to give a new take or a fresh spin to a genre that had become a bit stale and, at the time they were formed, wasn't doing well in Japan, just maybe to attract a new audience of people who would probably have never been exposed to metal otherwise and to get them used to the instrumentals, but with vocals they were more comfortable with and then just maybe they would find things among the more traditional metal bands they might like too.
The whole idea was formed and developed around the vocal talents of Su-metal - their producer is a lifelong metalhead. He saw her performing with her previous JPop trio and was so impressed by the power of her vocals and her stage presence, despite her very tender years at that time, that he thought she might even be able to front a metal band and not have trouble being heard above the loud music. He also wanted to try something else that hadn't been done in metal and he added the dance element having Su-metal supported by her two young friends Yumetal and Moametal.
They have about 50 songs now, each one is different - they have songs in virtually every metal genre (including Prog Metal - I assume the next track you referred to will be 'Tales of the Destinies' - hopefully you have found the Babymetal Reactor Resource channel for the live version and you haven't been given a link to a horrible compilation video - they only ever played it live one time, that was at the Tokyo Dome).
They will also mix or blend in many other musical styles and genres (not just pop) with the metal - often when you least expect it.
Some songs are good hard metal, some lean towards their JPop roots and they do everything in between. You will have to look very hard to find any two songs that sound alike - you may find two or three in a similar style (like power metal or whatever), but the next one will be completely different.
It is possible you may not like one song if it is too 'poppy' for your tastes - no problem, we can't all like everything they do (but listen again, it may grow on you). If not try another song - it will be different and maybe it will be one you'll love, there is no way of telling which way it will go until you try it.
What you can't do with BABYMETAL is slot them neatly into just one genre, they refuse to go into just one box or pigeonhole and just when you think you've worked out what they are they will throw you another curve ball and do something completely different.

I always find it rather funny how people like to equate being a "gimmick" as to be the opposite of being talented/good, especially in the music industry.... Sometimes a gimmick is whats needed to break the mold, look at KISS and Slipknot, though they might not be considered gimmick now, but their whole presentation and look was can definitely be seen as a gimmick when it started.... Babymetal is definitely a gimmick, but more than that, it was a handcrafted supergroup. The producer Koba, wanted to refresh the metal scene, so he found the best young talented vocalist he can find (Su) and paired her with her two friends (Yui and Moa) who would be backup singers/dancers/hypewomen to get the crowd involved, and then found the best session musicians in Japan to form the Kamiband to back them up in live shows.... If you look at the some of the best guitarist, bassist, drummers in Japans rock/metal scene, you would find some of them have played in the Kamiband at one time or another. Babymetal definitely kicked open the door for all the recent female Japanese metal/rock bands you've been listening to..... I think Saki from Nemophila said in interview that Babymetal's success is what paved the road for female jrock/metal groups to have greater recognition overseas. And Babymetal is not what you would consider to be a traditional band... Lovebite, Band Maid, Aldious, TriDENT those are bands but Babymetal is a rock opera broadway show. Legend 1997 (not the year the concert was held, but the bday concert of Su who was born in 1997) and Legend S XX Baptism are the best examples of the rock show aspect of Babymetal. Babymetal's metal creds were in question when they started, but having been defended, supported, toured with, and/or collaborated by the likes of Rob Zombie, Cory Taylor, Rob Halford, Red Hot Chili Pepper, Metallica, Sabaton, Bring Me The Horizon, their Metal cred is only questioned by a very small minority. Have fun exploring the rest of their stuff. I'm sure the fans will send you a lot of suggestions. 😁😁😁😁😁🤘🦊🤘

The concept of Babymetal is referring to a blend of "Pop" and "Metal" to create a new genre of music = Kawaii Metal, or "Cute Metal". You will find the "poppier" elements in their earlier songs where they are quite young...they are over 10 years in now, and the oldest (the main vocalist Su Metal) is in her mid twenties. Anyways, very unique and as an old metal head of 59, just what I needed to keep me interested in the genre,

She is 24years old now . She belongs to the biggest entertainment company in Japan and is a famous singer and talent from when a child .
When you have a hard time , you should listen 'no rain no rainbow' by BABYMETAL . Your soul would be fulfilled by the God blessing , I think .

Not sure which video to leave the comments on. 🤔 haha
Babymetal is a fusion of J-pop and metal so the vocals will always be more pop oriented. The ladies of Babymetal are the vocalists/dancers so they very rarely play any instruments. The fact that they don't play instruments confuses people for some reason, which has always been odd to me since they are the vocalists. I mean no offense by the remark. Lots of people have that issue.
I'm assuming the next song is Tales of the Destinies. That's definitely their big prog rock song and it's a good one. If you dive any deeper, you will find all kinds of different genre mash-ups but they are always well done.
I totally understand if it's not for you in the end. Babymetal is not conventional metal so it's not going to be for everyone.

Rob Halford doesn't play an instrument, Bruce Dickinson doesn't play, Ozzy doesn't play an instrument. Many other examples. Why should it matter if lead vocal/dance and 2 scream/dance don't play an instrument.
BABYMETAL have brought me back to metal with a fresh new concept and I have fallen deep into the foxhole.

funny how you put off listening to Babymetal but you have listened to Band-Maid and Lovebites and others. how ironic. Babymetal and their success opened the door for those groups you have listened to. Babymetal was started to help bring the Japanese metal scene back and you see how strong it is now. Thanks to Babymetal. they created their own genre and then some. they pushed the norms of what is suppose to be to what actually sounds cool. you can have a different opinion and that is fine but if you look back at their history you will see that these bands you talk about were started after Babymetal started getting popular. and FYI Su the lead singer was 17 years old and the other 2 were 15. at this point 2015 Babymetal had been a band since 2010 when Su was 12 and the others were 11 years old.

NIce reaction! BM are always difficult to anticipate. Their music comes out of the mind of their producer Kei Kobayashi and it's very eclectic; you'll get prog rock, death metal, pop, ska and even dubstep. I think of a BM performance as half way between a rock concert and a Broadway show and The Kami Band and the Babymetal girls are professional performers putting on a show. As you go deeper down the "foxhole" I think you'll appreciate the band even more, Su's singing and the way Moa and Yui control the crowd. In this concert Moa and Yui are 15 and Su is 17, so they are still kids, and I'm always surprised by how they can control a crowd of 20000 fans.
"Road of Resistance" is about fighting and resisting even if you can't see the way ahead and it reminds us that there are things worth fighting for - so it's an appropriate song for the times. It was the song that sold me on BM because I ended it as an emotional wreck. They take you from one pinnacle to another and just keep on going. But for me the real hero of this song is the drummer, Hideki Aoyama, I think this song averages over 200 BPM. I wonder what's the collective number of calories expended by BM and the Kami Band in this performance.
The song has a strong "Dragonforce vibe" because Dragonforce's Li and Totman worked on it and play it on the album, but I like this live Kami Band version more. The concert has a great stage set up and the famous Yui leap over Moa during IDZ.
At the end of the crowd "wows" I love the combination of the insanely fast guitar riff and the dance sequence that ends with the girls standing strongly and outlined by the lights, that's where I really get the chills. It shows how well the Babymetal team works to bring together music, singing, dancing and stage and lighting design.
BM's prog rock content is really, "Tales of the Destinies" and "The One" and it's Koba's homage to Dream Theatre.

React to "Karate" at Download festival in Britain. After they broke out internationally in 2014 at the Sonisphere festival they went to be the Japanese band/group to chart on Billboard in 53 YEARS!!! They have toured with Metallica, Lady Gaga, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Korn. They are metal in a category all their own. They were first Japanese band/group to perform in the Wembley Arena and they sold-out the LA Forum in 2019!

      @@pentagrammaton6793 i disagree.
They bring every good aspect of metal into their concerts, while doing a por of experimental stuff with their music, they are not like any other band in the world that's why they are so good.
But i like how respectfull you were, stay metal.
