I started playing guitar because of Grant Green! The album was "Feeling the Spirit".
Tons of Thanks Rick! ( George Benson had every Grant Green Album before his success)

I'm really impressed that, not only did you figure out these licks by ear, but you also transcribed them to music notation. That's a great skillset.

All of your lessons are great Rick!! I especially appreciate them because I grew up listening to live music by some these great musicians in the 50's, 60's and 70's. I knew Grant Green. He was an amazing guitarist. Keep up the good work brother!

So, I mainly play funk and r&b ish guitar. Always trying to keep it tight and rhythmic, even during solos and lead lines. I have been transcribing Grants album that has Herbie on keys, Feelin' the Spirit. Mostly because I love how Herbie outlines w rhythm and I really liked Grants solos on it. They are boppy, but not in the way that gets annoying like (don't h8 me) Bird licks lol. Anywho, I had just finished Joshua Fit and was looking up lead sheets for the next track and I saw a chart for a song called 'Aint it funky now' and I noticed...it looked an awful lot like a punched up James Brown chart .....well turns out it fuckin was lmao. I almost fell over. Here I have been learning this fellas solos because they were kinda funky jazzy leads and then boom...I learn he has actual Funk tunes. And 3 albums of live funk. Needless to say, my time transcribing and studying Grant has been increased lol.
It's a nice break from my Scofield study, which has been ongoing for about 4 years now lol. If anyone's reading this and hasn't checked out Scary Goldings album w/ Scofield.....you gotta check it out. It's absolute top tier material. I almost wish I could unlearn it, just to learn it all again haha

Nice licks. I have always liked Grant Green's Final Comedown track, very funky. If I am not mistaken the third lick is used in that track. I believe this track only uses one chord. If that is true the licks used must be clever to make it sound so musical. More licks from the Final Comedown would be fun to learn.

Check out GG's biography if you can find it, written by his daughter-in-law. He was living in Detroit in the 70s and playing locally. He struggled with drug addiction and died while on tour at the age of 43. Drugs, booze and the mafia did some serious damage to musicians.

This is great, and the tone is bang on, but the fingerings of the high notes don't look right for Grant, who played a non-cutaway L7 from '64 through the early '70s (except for a couple sessions on a non-cutaway Epiphone) with very limited access beyond the 12th fret.
He did play a 330 prior to '64, with better high fret access.
