I was around when unknown road came out. it was tottally mindblowing.
Glad you gave straight ahead the respek it deserves. It’s one we blasted at the skatepark for probably two solid years straight
Wow. Pennywise wrote some of their best tracks for All or Nothing! Sounds amazing. The singing along to the drums in Hear Your Voice is awesome.
I was in the 5th grade when straight ahead was my album and pennywise really made me an different individual till this day
I feel like Straight Ahead is the albums most Pennywise fans overlook. I could be wrong but I am always seeing love for the older stuff and of course Land of the Free. But Straight Ahead should be up there
Thanks guys. As a long term fan this was fun to follow along.
Straight ahead was my first album I got into also. Love this one so much!
Same for both of us too, I think that is why I have it over Full Circle.. Listening back though it's really close between the 2 of them.
To me Pennywise post-Straight Ahead is a different band
The albums run together for me after. The first five albums have very distinct sound and personality from each other.
And this is probably the single most important band that shaped me into who I am today. Debatable if thats a good thing or not! But yea…
Man, I guess this might come down to age and point of reference, but you guys are blowing my mind with these lists. I'm old (late 40s) and grew up on the coast as a skater and surfer. I had always been into 80s punk (bad brains, misfits, agent orange) and during the early 90s all the epitaph bands started getting featured on a popular surf video that made them blow up on the east and west coast underground. Bad Religion, Pennywise, NOFX, Offspring, Lagwagon, No Use (and somehow sublime) were all big in that scene. Many of these bands were quite derivative of Bad Religion (especially pennywise and and No Use) but I loved it. I had never heard warp speed punk that was so melodic. The pennywise self titled, unknown road, and killing time are the best in my opinion, at that point they sounded more like bad religion, I did not care for how their sound progressed. After full circle its kind of boring. And yea, Jim definitely had some low register Axl Rose moments on the unknown road ha.
John I'm sorry I audibly groaned when you said you were putting About Time in the B tier. Not sure if it's my personal nostalgia but there's always my go to PW record. I just really dig how metallic the production sounds, Fletcher's riffs fucking rip so hard and the songs just absolutely rule. Unknown Road in both C tiers was a surprise. PW is another one of those bands I loved when I was in high school and after I think Straight Ahead the repetitiveness just wore on me and I stopped. I think Land of the Free? was the last PW record I checked out and I knew I was done. I couldn't get into it, it all just sounded the same and the songs didn't resonate with me like they did on the older records.
I don't know why but I always have trouble going backwards in a band's catalog, because Straight Ahead/Full Circle was my introduction to the band I hold those higher than About Time. Maybe I am off with this, but I think About Time sounds a lot like those two, so when I heard it; it didn't grab me the way it would have if it was the first of the 3 that I heard. With that said, About Time definitely rips and it is a fantastic record. As always, thanks for watching Andrew, we really appreciate it!!
@@PunkRockRadar Yeah man I can see how it might be difficult to go backwards and find the feelings about the older records don't match the albums that got you into a band. I find that the difference in your list and mine almost exclusively has to do with our age difference. About Time was 95 when I was 15 and my first exposure to PW was on the first few Punk-O_Rama comps so yeah Dying to Know and Open Door was my intro to the band. Love these videos man, got me listening to or thinking about bands I haven't gone back to in a long time. I'm not surprised you're swapping to an every other week with these tier lists, I can't imagine how taxing it must be to cram so much much into a handful of days. Excited to see what's next next week.
@@PunkRockRadar Also consider me hella stoked if your next two lists are Trio and the Souls. I definitely have both of their logos tattooed on me like the walking stereotype that I am.
Definitely, after Straight Ahead it just all sounded like a melodic mesh. That thrashy vibe was gone.
Great episode! Love pennywise. I’m pulled towards certain albums over others, but generally love their sound.
Unknown Road at C is criminal man….Jim’s voice is one of the coolest parts of it. He is doing something different and it was amazing
100% Straight Ahead is S-Tier. Gun to head, would probably choose it as favorite album of all time. Summer of 2000, this was the only album I listened to... my introduction to Pennywise.
Man...All or Nothing is S tier and I have been listening to these guys since unknown road...
My top 3 pennywise albums are
1.All or Nothing
2.Full Circle
3.About Time
D tier is 88...Yesterday's and Fuse
Fun watch tho guys!
Thanks for checking out the video! No idea what happened on the Fuse, complete dud all around, weird that it happened when they were pretty close to peak popularity. At least it's an outlier in the catalog
I agree on Reason To Believe being underrated. That record was the last one I liked and the best since Land of the Free IMO. Pennywise is a band that held down my #2 favorite band spot for a long time and then really fell off as my tastes changed. As discussed, they sound pretty much the same throughout their entire catalogue and every record is lyrically trite. I can only take so much generic "FIGHT THE SYSTEM! REVOLUTION!" Still have fond memories of them though and enjoyed going back to listen to some of these records after watching this. Keep up the good work!
Yeah Reason to Believe was a good comeback after the Fuse, maybe lacked some of the energy of the early records, but overall a good listen. Thanks for watching!
I rewatched this video because PW is my favorite band and, even if I think that Land of the free? and Never gonna die are some of the greatest PW albums, they don't sound at all the same. Never gonna die is really fast and got a old school twist and Land of the free? is slower, darker, more "cerebral" or "robotic" (don't know if you know what I mean by that). For me, Never gonna die is the modern version of the 1991 self-titled album and Land of the free was really a mature shift in their sound. Keep up the good work guys!
Thanks so much for watching, Pennywise is one of my all time favorite bands as well, i can listen to all these albums all day long. Love Never Gonna Die and I really hope we get another new one soon!
Dunno about unknown roand and maybe i'm biased.. because i listened to unknown road when i'm in jail and is my only cd brought by girlfriend.. But this cd save my life.. period
It's a good album, I think if we had listened to it when it came out instead of several years later we would both have different opinions on it. It's tough to dive in to a discography when your start point is the middle. I think the production quality of PW undeniably goes up especially starting at Straight Ahead and since the style doesn't differ too much, we found ourselves sticking with the newer material during the PW heyday, but always cool to see different perspectives and stories, thanks for watching!
There’s a reason unknown road about time and full circle are so beloved. Pennywise probably the most consistent punk band of the early mid nineties. Straight ahead was viewed as let down unfairly, I think because alien was such a departure. Which I grew to love. That said can’t have ahead of full circle. Feel like Land of the free was return to that consist pennywise for better or worse
I suppose it really depends on which album you are introduced to first. For me, it was self-titled and Unknown Road. Unknown Road hit differently, just the energy and the kind of urgency behind the raw philosophy of the songs and lyrics. Those first two albums had that, and nothing after re-captured it except for a few songs on their newest album. Straight Ahead is a banger, though. All or Nothing I feel is musically on-point but it doesn't have that trademark passion. It sounds like Pennywise with slick hardcore stylization.
Yeah I can totally see that, if I heard Unknown Road when it came out it would probably have the same effect. Thanks so much for checking out the video!
Yep, self titled was my first. Heard a few of those songs on a Taylor Steele surf video when we were in high school and were hooked. That album, unknown road, and about time were the soundtracks to my high school / undergrad surf sessions.
This is so hard - having to put some in all tiers. So many A albums for me. About Time has to be S-tier. 'Searching' is such an underrated song on there.
I tuned out after The Fuse...another band I have to revisit because of you two 😆
The Fuse was bad, I don't blame you for tuning out after that, but definitely check out the latest one! Thanks as always for watching!
John's list is on point
Pretty weird how nostalgia has an effect on fav records. My introduction to PW was The Fuse, and that is still my favorite album haha.
Yeah it definitely does, happened to me with Bad Religion where my first record was No Substance
All or nothing full circle and straight ahead S tier
zoli was INSANE and live, they were absolutely impecable playing new and old songs. Saw them 7x and one of them was with Zoli in Brazil, 2011. One of the best shows I’ve ever seen was with Zoli, the band was SUPER tight, so much energy. It was a perfect performance
But if it’s PW with him or not, it’s their fault haha
I wish I didn't sleep on the Zoli record for so long, I rediscovered it when we decided to do the list. It is definitely awesome, so much energy and you can feel that they were all really into it
Can u guys rank the Strung Out discography please?! 🤗....they're one of my if not my fav skate punk bands and their discography is really good... ALOTTT better then pennywise IMO ...love ur channel i literally just found it randomly 2day...keep up the great work!
Thanks so much for watching! We will 100% be doing Strung Out at some point, one of my all time favorite bands.
I think the pennywise album from land of the free forward is awesome
We've got another PW video coming out next week too - I agree BTW
I kinda stopped listening to them after "Straight Ahead" 'cause i think they went downhill...damn i'm old. I'm gonna give a chance and check out their "newer"(post 2000) stuff. Btw, in "Unknown Road" Jim presents his best melodical singing in my opinion. As a vocalist, i love singing the songs from this album! My fave, for sure.
Thanks for checking out the video! The latest record is pretty damn good man, definitely give it a listen
Agreed 100%
I'm old too, and the first 3 major albums are the only ones I ever go back to and I loved them in the early mid 90s when i was in college.
Must talk about another underrated song when discussing Full Circle: 'Broken' is fantastic.
Both tier list are good!!
"Never gonna die" is a A/S. 😍😍 What a comeback!
It's so good! I hope we get another PW album this year. fingers crossed
All Or Nothing is their best album and it's not even a competition honestly. No disrespect to Jim because end of the day any PW is at least good PW, but AON is just peak musicianship, peak production, peak speed, peak songwriting and of course Zoli who is a killer vocalist for this style.
I don't disagree, just didn't feel like a Pennywise album. Hard to rank it against what has become such a consistent sound. But yeah the record sounds fantastic!
I remember when my friend bought Straight Ahead and it all sounded the same, song to song, nothing stood out to me. I didnt buy any more albums after Full Circle because I was so dissapointed. Honestly I think the album art ruined it for me as well, I absolutely hated it and i dont know why. I think it just reminded of other bands I didnt like. S tier for me would be Unknown Road and About Time. It would be twisting my arm not to put self titled in A over S because of the nostalgia. As I've gotten older the newer albums I appreciate more. The Zoli one I would have a hard time saying is PW but it absolutely rocks.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks Land of the free is S tier. Idt even Pennywise thinks it's S tier, they're not even playing it as part of their album a night shindig. They hardly play anything off it anymore except Fuck Authority.
Yeah I saw those 5 shows, It's wild because it just had the 20th anniversary repress and everything, would have been perfect timing for a show... But yes, it is definitely S Tier, it's my favorite PW album by far.
@@PunkRockRadar I forgot about that! I don't understand why they skipped on that album.
For me personally all Pennywise albums are great but they didn’t solidify their style until About Time. Before that they had some great songs that are certainly classic PW but there are also a number of songs that don’t quite gel. From About Time onward its like they became focused on exactly who they are and what they wanted to be.
I agree, About Time is definitely the turning point. The early album are OK but the late 90s early 00s albums are untouchable
Glad I stumbled upon you guys. Hard to find people doing these punk bands. I run 7RockLists on Twitter and cannot get people that listen to post 80s punk :(
I have also done a Top70 Pennywise tracks: music.ua-cam.com/play/PLA-IizFuPTB__TPZPnZbqZcguUv2oS6yg.html&si=r3Lmp_5TcrRHvwXX
Awesome, I'll definitely check the list out!
Agree on Yesterdays being near bottom.
Almost just had a heart attack when you put self titled in C
For sure, I died a little inside
No Reason is definitely better than The Fuse... very interested to see where All or Nothing goes. It is S tier for me.
Has there ever been a NOFX tier list?
It was the very first video we ever did. I took it down since it was pretty awful. Going to re-do it once the new record comes out in November though. There is a link to watch the original in our discord channel though
@@PunkRockRadar Oh no I'll just wait for the new one lol. These videos are fun to listen to while I'm at work man lol. I'd be able to talk about this shit all day. Land of the Free came out while I was in high school and is also my favorite, and I have to think that plays a factor for sure! I also totally agree, I have called them the MOST repetitive punk band basically. They were one of the punk bands that introduced me to the genre, so they'll always have a place in my life... but I've discovered at least, IDK FORTY bands in the genre who I like better. For instance, I didn't start listening to NUFAN really until three years ago, and I like them better lol.
Didn't Jim recommend Zoli?
This is gonna be a rough ride when you put another 🐐in C
What in the world!?
I saw Pennywise like 13 times in concert and the only songs from Land of the free that they ever played was Fuck Authority and The World, so this album is not the principal reason why people go to their shows, most of their shows is songs from Straight Ahead, About Time and Self titled.
Yeah you are definitely right, After the show we were checking set lists on line and that is certainly the case. The bulk of shows we saw them were from 2001 - 2004 so I think that may be skewing our memories slightly.
Happy to see you made some researches ;)
From the Ashes has a very different sound compared to those before it. It was not well received at the time. Even by me. BUt going back it is actually one of the most consistent albums for me now. But yeah - lacking the absolute balltearer tracks.
Pennywise are much Better than nofx
I would agree currently but I think Nofx's back catalog is stronger
Obviously the albuns will sound the same, 'cause is another album from the the same band.
Can't argue with that statement. Thanks for watching!
@@PunkRockRadar You're welcome dude
Yea, I think that is kind of expected from this genre as well, I mean did you expect pennywise to start sounding like Led Zep or maybe some rap metal ha. Most of the time when punk bands change too much it's not for the better. I mean NOFX made the same album for 20 years and most of them were good.
Agree with Never Gonna Die down low. It sounds flat. The production is NOT great.
