SADE...........I have the original album and indeed it is realy early good...........thanks for the advice on the album from Kristen...recorded with tube gear , may sound very good and have that human touch that is so usualy so well preserved by vacuum tube technology.......
This is interesting, since I have a version of this. I hope you get better quickly! I apologize for my comment about this amp project before. I wrongly thought this would take to long & get the channel sidetracked from your build from scratch projects & hopefully more info on your tape decks. That would be interesting about a turntable project. I have a vintage Technics that I got at a thrift store, that has volunteers with electronics experience that check things over, it has worked well for me & upgraded the cartridge to a Nagaoka & a Puffin phono amp. Take care & it's great you are halfway to 17K subscribers!
Great Monday monologue and looking forward to seeing this amp living again, regarding the technics sl1200 gr , I bought a new one about 6 yrs ago and I can tell you it ain't no dj deck nor was it aimed at that market, these things are a masterpiece TT , and dead silent due to the motor design, ive had all sorts of high end turntable and nothing comes close to the quality sound of these !! If you enjoy jazz and fun jazz go take a listen to the fabulous Jazz Sabbath 😊😊
I just wish they had done this 1300G with all the tech, including the mag tone arm, of the 1200G but is the sleeker styling. For now I'm gonna enjoy my 100C with the upgraded OC9XML cart.
The 1300 does look pretty but looking at the spec and price NAH definitely not, as i said the sl1200 is the most capable tt ive had , i had so many dislikes for the rega stuff i was glad to have sold it all on , the only rega i had that was good was the one i heavily modified, with a 2" thick solid bamboo plinth and motor upgrade it was almost a keeper's 😅@SkunkieDesignsElectronics
I agree with you in general about Bose. They have fallen a long way from the days of the Founder. I do have a pair of their discontinued bluetooth sunglasses that do sound very good for open ear listening. But, if they ever stop working, impossible to fix! Back in College my room mate had a pair of 901s. They did sound very good but, had little experience with listening to other highend speakers at the time, except the Dahlquist dq10 I heard at the time in a local Hi Fi store at the same time. I see used ones fetch a high price even today!
Ah well, that's how my bench looked like yesterday as well 🙂 The new EL34 amp (with Thermionic Lab OPTs) is finished now. Time to do some measurements and listen comparisons with the other one that has ISO FC12S in it.
Wowzas the Thermionic Lab OPTs make some bass (compared to ISO FC12s which are no slouch to begin with). I used "SE-OPT-5K:4/8R 25W UL VEB" and first impressions are real good.
My rega 3 is still at work here, new motor thow but 30 years old, son gett a audio note kit4 with 6v6 tubes in the post,so then i have another reserve amp.
My suggestion on the turntable is to start by energizing the motor to spin the platter without an LP playing and then listen for any noise floor that is above your room noise. This will eliminate the motor and wow-flutter (assuming for direct-drive as in your model)... As with most of the legacy products we were brought up on, the old ways are a ting of the past once corporate bean counters who have no attachment to the history get involved, Sad fact of where this society is going... Considering that folks who buy and can afford Mac and S/F, this will in my opinion, could be disastrous and difficult to convince the audiophile community...
Hi Stephe, I hope you get well soon. Regarding Bose, the biggest fear is indeed what may happen to the support for McIntosh legacy products. Even more so, if they will loose that know how and can't even undo their errors. But there is not much we can do. We will have to sit this out and envision that Bose will do the right thing. If they are smart they will structure their new empire like a holding and let McIntosh do what they do best.
1300g is superb. It was going to be my next turntable, but I was offered a 1200g. The 1200g is silent. The rumble just disappears. Ignore the DJ crap on there. The performance is incredible. The GR2 has the best/newest motor. Some argue better than the 1200g. You can always change the tonearm!
Sade was great, and I had her "best of" CD and LP but then got the whole LP box set. The Technics SL-1200GR2 is a fine turntable, but I've relegated mine to my secondary system and don't really use it as I prefer my TEAC TN-5BB with the AT-OC9XML cartridge.
@@SkunkieDesignsElectronics Yep, it's a good one, and now I'm intrigued by the AT-OC9XSL Special Line Contact version. I might get one if I can find it on sale.
I'm not sure that the Bose purchase of McIntosh is going to be a bad thing. I own a McIntosh amp and preamp and I'm not sure who owns the company now, but at one time they were owned by Clarion and as far as I know the quality never changed. Time will tell : )
At least Bose is a privately owned entity, not a private equitity group. Odds are far greater that Mac will survive as an audio company and not a cash cow for some bean counter led group.
I have a question about the ST70 & would love to hear your comments on the next update or in the comments. I mentioned that with my restored one the only wires left that are cloth covered are the ones coming out of the original transformers, which of course can't be replaced. Since I had an issue with a short on these old wires (which the restorer kindly replaced) do you think the only way I won't possibly have an issue with the original wires out of the transformers shorting would be to replace the transformers? Thanks!
You might be able to open them up and just replace those wires? Or someone experienced with transformers may be able to. I honestly would just wait and see if they ever become an issue.
With your modding ability, I'd bet you could easily fabricate a custom armboard for your 100C and then put a nicer tonearm on the table. Modding is the very spirit of your core IMO. The coreless motor is perfect with accurate enough speed (equal to 1300G). Maybe increase the platter weight (and dampening) with a KAB polymat, basically a CNC aluminum plate sandwiched in teflon. It's intended to be used with the stock Technics mat. Many great tonearms to choose from and it may end up smoking the 1300G. I've had SL-1200 MK2 variants and a GR. The jump to GR was lackluster. Maybe a jump from 100C to 1300G would be the same .... lackluster, especially since the coreless motor was the most critical cahnge from old to new, and you already have it with 100C. Think of all the vinyl you could buy with the difference in cost and of course the challenge and learning from the "mod" ... ;) .... as well as entering a new rabbit hole ... lol.
This just shows that Bose understands changes in customer demands and Mac kept serving graying and dying generation. Dudes, your kids love music, but they won't be buying McIntosh any time soon.
BTW, Thanks for not having a big fat podcast microphone in your face. People are going to look back in a few years and cringe at how ridiculous they look, when a decent lav works fine.
I think you would be better off getting a turntable from a dedicated turntable manufacturer like VPI or Rega. Please don't commit to the Technics unless and until you have had the opportunity to audition something from a company who cares only about audio quality.
I was considering it but changed my mind. There isn't enough difference to consider this 1300G an "upgrade". And I've listened to a couple of Rega tables, they are OK but I wasn't blown away by them.
McInBose....This purchase is very different then past purchases as Audio has matured, the market has changed (GenX, Y, A,B,C) and we have a Real company (Bose) with $$$$'s that MacIntosh can but axed. It's the car manufacture business that I would focus on and get out of crap Jeep (plus let's be frank, we do not make quality cars) and go fully into Porsche. McIntosh legacy products is a losing business, and the bean counters will see this. Yes, this keeps the cult happy and while Day turns into Night, this will change in this transaction or another.
We all know what happens when a big corporation buys a respected and famous brand.........Marantz , Leak , Luxman and so many others ..........Luxman was sold to Alpine , happily they went independant again and manufacture again in Japan....... Who ever was a big fan /customer of Mac wil have seconds thought from now on .... I never bought an ST70 because of the rarity and pricetag of the original driver tube ( 7199 )....the russian version is not equivalent to the real tube...... Good healing to your problem Steph .
"You know me, I can't leave well enough alone" - sure do, Stephe, sure do. It is an affliction a few of us suffer from...

I love the detailed videos. Bring them on!
Great stuff Stephe! Merry Christmas!
A friend of mine called it "McInbose" - made me laugh. Anyway, great video as always--thanks for the updates.
Love your vids
Thanks for another year of great content Stephe. Merry Christmas.
Merry Christmas to you too!
I restored an ST -35 to original, had a VTA ST-70 and a pair of the Bob Latino M-125s. Amazing, everyone of them!! 🙂
I really enjoy those soldering videos. Never underestimate the sonic qualities of a modified ST-70.

Yeah I hope this ST70 comes along quickly :)
To go along with your British themed speakers, take a look at Vertere Acoustics Turntables, astonishingly good!

Right, if they end legacy support for higher short term profits, that would kill the brand IMHO.
Hey Stephe, check out the Thorens 1600 or 1610 😎
Interesting, I'll have to check them out.
Will the improved Boseintosh Wave radio be next?
There was news that Bose is bringing back the 901s.
Have you looked at the Luxman PD-151 turntable? It might be an interesting alternative to the 1200/1300.

IMO - Bose is one of those companies the spends as much (or more) $$ on marketing as they do R & D. Say goodbye to McIntosh.
