Back in 1968 and 1969, I was having a drink with Brian Jacks. I noticed that he was smoking a cigarette. We all smoked at that time. Looking for inspirational guidance, I asked him how long before an international competition he would give up smoking. To my surprise, he replied: "well, about two minutes!!" Great man. Great athlete.Used to throw me around like a rag doll.
The Superstars that was on over Christmas last year was an insult to those who appeared in this era and also to the memory of David Vine and Ron Pickering.
Those Squat thrusts look like a paraplegic trying to get off the floor and those dips were a bit short, he'd have probably done 70-80 with proper form which is incredible. 50 and over is extremely hard.
By leaning forward he reduces the range of movement considerably. That is fair enough. He moves too fast to tell if he is locking out to start with but he sure ain't towards the end when he slows down.
As a member of my local judo club I did 50 squat thrusts 3 times a week...probably the reason I am still alive considering how much i drink and smoke now
Have to say Jacks dips looked very shallow!! The guy is a legend but I think the techniques were exploited and exaggerated his achievement! Didn't see much 90 degrees action at all!! As for sliding squats..... Taking the piss
Loved watching Superstars when I was younger

Pain is an illusion...the desire to win can overcome the pain...for a while
But not forever
Brian Jacks = Legend
Ask a gymnast if even one of those is a ‘dip’
Greatest parlour trick ever.

Good stuff! Have any more Superstars videos?
Brian Jacks was probably the fittest person in the UK ever.

Mark G never straightened his arms! Cheat!
Mark G partials or not...the speed and volume he did those dips and squats requires insane levels of fitness and mental stamina
If Jacks had been a footballer he'd have been the white maradonna. He was a complete and natural athlete with power, agility and a massive heart.
This is when the bbc did sport well
Brian jacks was a god amongst men
Except Daley Thompson trashed Brain Jacks in the Weightlifting! And Brain never straightened his arms in those dips. Poor form!
Brilliantly entertaining tv
Ugh, we have to do this in PE now, my mum was telling me about it, we have to do all the exercise, without the famous athletes
Brian Jacks must be good with the ladies
Schekter, what a lad.
Iconic show with an equally iconic theme tune, which the Americans nicked.🙄🙄
@krakenwave I would say yes!
sorry but his dips are nowhere near as deep as the other guy's were.
@kmburss Well said. An inspiration to so many.
Never locked his arms once terrible form, he couldn't do 50 proper dips
Kkuk84 Yep I agree. We all used to say it at the time too. "He's not straightening his arms"
Dips were fine other wise they wouldn't have counted
keith Fielding beat JAcks and JAcks never did superstars again ...
