    Thanks. I wish Accu-Stats matches would follow WPA rules for 10-ball. They always let a 10 early count as a win. When the rules are relaxed too much, it just becomes 9-ball with an extra ball.

    A pool hall in a different city than me does the rack of 10 ball with the 1 on top, 10 in the middle, and 2 and 3 in the corners. They also do a rule of no early 10s so if you combo the 10 it's a respot on the 10. Although some tournaments do the early 10 rule and the derby city big foot 10 ball tournament allows fluking

    Good video, as usual. You included strategy in 9-ball and 8-ball, so I kind of missed it here as well, regarding how players actually don't explicitly call safe in 10-ball. They usually call something that might go, in case they make a ball and somehow wind up with a shot on the next ball, either as a two way shot, or by accidentally not being able to hide the object ball they hit and somehow make another ball.

    I think I found something like a loophole in the 10 ball rules and wonder what you think about it.
    In WPA Rules section 9.7 "Wrongfully Pocketed Balls" one of the conditions to hand the shot back is stated as "... or pockets another ball, ..." and it is not specified as "object ball" (where it is mostly specified in most cases). So in a theoretical situation where it benefits (i.e. next ball is surrounded by other balls and a foul is imminent) the incoming player could hand the shot back to the opponent when the opponent has scratched, which means "another ball" (in this case it happens to be the cue ball) is pocketed.
    I couldn't find anything against this in the rules, but it will be very difficult to explain this in a real game situation :)
    By the way I discussed this with a head referee of our national federation, at first he got confused naturally, but he agreed with me at the end since the rule refers to any ball, not object balls.
    As I mentioned at the beginning, I really wonder your approach about this issue, since you are the most scientific person about pool that I know of :D

    • @DrDaveBilliards
      @DrDaveBilliards  2 місяці тому +2

      The rule should be clarified, but I think the intent is clear. “Pocketing another ball” in this context implies another object ball; otherwise, it would be written as “pocketing another ball or scratching.” But, again, I agree that the rule should be clarified to: “Pocketing another object ball.”

    • @MoTab78
      @MoTab78 2 місяці тому +2

      @@DrDaveBilliards Yes, I agree that the intent is not about a scratch and it should be clarified, also implementation of what I said is very absurd where the opponent is given a ball in hand after a scratch.
      But it is not clarified and the existing rule didn't specify it as "object ball" where it is commonly specified mostly throughout the rules even it is not needed.
      And I think this approach feels awkward, too, but also I think rules are rules and the rules does say "another ball" which includes the cue ball.
      Very confusing :D

    Hey Dr. Dave, thanks for the informative video! I've played 10-ball before with "call safe" rules, where if snooker your opponent while you intended to pocket a ball and miss, then your opponent can give the shot back. Are these rules at all familiar to you? I had always thought they were WPA until this video.

    Hi Dr. Dave, hoping your well! This 10 ball rule about the 10 ball always being respoted until the end of the game , Has that always been the case ? I'm sure I can remember Efren playing a 10 ball match a few years ago and he called a combination on the red 3 to pot the 10 ball, The shot was played perfectly and Efren won the rack! Is this a new 10 ball rule potting the 10 only at the end of the rack ? Best wishes to you! Ian, UK

    "Official Rules of Pool"? I assume the quotes are meant as a qualifier? The BCA, owned by CSI, is a pretty common format, and for example, the back two balls in the rack must be the 2 and 3. Also, an early 10, if called, is a win.
    Maybe, "The Official WPA Rules of Pool"?

    • @DrDaveBilliards
      @DrDaveBilliards  2 місяці тому +1

      The WPA rules are the official rules of pool. They are also published in the official BCA Rules Book. The BCAPL (owned by CSI), like all leagues, uses slightly different rules per the info here:

      @DrDaveBilliards seriously not trying to be argumentative, but who exactly decided on that title? Also, what major tournaments, like Derby City, use WPA?

    • @DrDaveBilliards
      @DrDaveBilliards  2 місяці тому +1

      @@MikeHughJass The WPA rules are standard worldwide and are used for most pro tournaments. Derby City is one of the few exceptions. I don’t know of a single other tournament that uses Derby City rules. The WPA rules are also published in the Billiard Congress of America”s official pool rules book.
