Documenting your journey is such a great idea. I love that you make these videos not only to document your journey but to help indie authors like myself. You have truly helped me Lyra. After watching some of your videos, I'm taking a step back to recollect myself and start planning out the long term instead of publishing on the fly. It's time for me to put together a plan.
Natalia Leigh eep!! I’m excited you’re here too! I’ve been watching your videos for awhile. ❤️ If you ever have any questions about things that I may have the answer to, feel free to reach out!
24 books (and presumably counting) is amazing! Funnily enough, like you I write and publish YA and recently started publishing romance under the name Diana Vale. Why I do like the freedom of self-publishing I do want to be traditionally published some day (hopefully within the next couple of years) and am working towards that with a current book I'm writing. Thank you for sharing!
Authortube and YT in general can be tough to crack. Social media has taken on trends and created algorithmic boxes for those trends which encourages creators to be less original. On top of all that, reaching other writers isn’t necessarily reaching future readers. It’s definitely a way creators can network and give one another a boost, support,etc....However, if this is the logical goal, how many are doing that? Anyway, I subscribed! Best of luck to the both of us finding our footing here. I’ve worked in the comic book and entertainment world for over a decade. Working on my own series of novels. Experience on most social media seems to be a double edged sword unless you’ve got an audience already. There’s a real bias concerning “rules” in general.
StoryDTechtive oh I totally agree about the reaching other writers doesn’t mean reaching readers. :) It is hard to break through on social media. All we can do is try our best and try to make a few friends along the way. Thanks so much for being here! Your background sounds interesting. I’m intrigued! ❤️
It’s a process, that’s for sure. Meantime, I’m experimenting and learning new things to hopefully make my videos interesting and creative. Film is just another storytelling medium, after all. It’s something I never thought I would be doing, but I’m finding it enjoyable...otherwise I probably would be blogging somewhere :)
This is awesome! One of the reasons I joined was to meet others with the same passion. I've met so many supportive people on here and it's honestly a lot of fun!
tropetrinitytrilogy aww yay! I totally agree. Being a writer can be lonely. :) Finding like-minded people and having a sense of community helps it not be so solitary. ❤️
This was awesome to watch. I know publishing is always changing depending on what is going on at the time and hearing about people's experiences are really helpful for people starting off.
I love your videos. This one made me cry because you spoke with love and sincerity. You're real and it shows. You have inspired me to start my own authortube. I've learned from just watching three videos. Thanks for sharing your videos with us.
Thanks for the explanation! I've been self published since 2013 and I thought I knew most media channels, and I'd never heard of AuthorTube! Appreciate the info!
Could you imagine if there was a place to get initiated into AuthorTube? Like some crazy epic fantasy ceremony? Full disclosure, I'm very green to this whole author thing. I just published a (sort of similar video) and like you joined because I love UA-cam and wanted to share/document my journey - also a little bit to join a community (this is the first one I found). Lots of people, myself included, also joined as part of a branding strategy/for building the author platform. However, someone in the comments on my video brought up a great point that even though lots of AuthorTubers use this as part of their marketing strategy yet the audience isn't broad enough/the right market (the viewers are Authors after all, not readers). Anyway... not really sure where I am going with this, but perhaps this plays into the point that you made regarding people using AuthorTube to validate their words? Anyways, great video! Thank you for sharing :)
Keylin Rivers haha, omg I know! Like we all have this secret handshake and password, like a sorority of sorts. One must recite the authortube rules by memory. LOL! Okay, maybe going a bit too far. But we’re creatives who make up stories...haha!! I think it’s good to use as a platform to build your personal brand, but I’m not sure how much it really does help with book sales. Authortube doesn’t have the same audience as booktube, but there is some sort of crossover somewhere. :) I think many make videos before they start publishing, gain a following whether small or large. So it helps validate their work of being a writer before the publishing process even happens. So there’s a platform to help boost confidence as they learn along the way. It’s not a bad thing at all and is probably really helpful in the beginning. But I tend to do things backwards, and since I’ve been there and done that, it’s kinda like well, I’ve already published a buttload, so that validates that I’m not bs-ing people and I have experience in this instead of learning along the way and acting as if it’s the holy grail. Just because a person has a lot of followers on authortube and published a book, doesn’t mean (IMO) they’re a great publishing resource, just means they’ve grows their UA-cam platform while publishing, but it may give a false sense of validation because they are talking about publishing and have a following so what they say is legit, right? LOL, that could’ve possibly made no sense at all. I need more coffee. Haha!! And yay!! Tell me where to get initiated. LOL. Glad you’re a part of authortube!
I'm glad you share your journey. I've been in authortube for a 1 year now and i struggled so much. I didnt know what I was doing! How could I give advice when I was still learning. I've recently decided my channel is to document my own indie journey, for myself first. And for others second. It's so much more freeing!
Peggy Spencer oh totally!! And you never know who you’re helping when you’re making videos about what you’re going through. You’d be surprised how many experience the same things and how relatable the struggles and triumphs are. Thanks for being here! ❤️❤️
I’ve considered making videos to document my own writing journey, but the process is so foreign to me. I mean, do I just record on my phone/iPad/laptop? Do I need an actual camera to record. I’m sure I’m overthinking it all, but that’s just me. I think it would be cool to document my beginning (debuting in the fall) and reflect on it in future years.
Dawn-Cora Mead you can totally use your phone! The cameras are great and it’s in your pocket. I don’t think there’s a reason to go invest in tons of equipment in the beginning. And if you find that you love it and really enjoy it, then treat yourself, but at first I don’t think it’s necessary.
I am documenting my writing journey on my channel with writing sprints/prompts. I also have things that make me happy and where positive vibes survive to keep the momentum going to work through all the struggles of being a writer or first time author. How do I get involved in author tube?
Great video! I want to document my journey with my own channel as you have said. I don't know anything about what it is to publish a book yet so maybe someone can journey with me :)
Oh absolutely!! It’s so much fun to be able to watch yourself grow. You can still talk about what you’re doing on your way to publication and writing and things. ❤️ Goodluck!
Thanks so much for being here! If you have any questions for me, feel free to ask! ❤️❤️
Just subscribed and am looking around for any Book Marketing tips. Thank you! Glad you're here.
Wow! 24? That's amazing! Congratulations and thanks for putting this video together.

Thank you for this, I'm working on my first novel and these videos have been such wonderful guidance.
Thank you so much for this great explanation! One of my friends mentioned #authortube tonight so I came to find out what's going on. You are awesome!
Really glad I found you! I can tell that you are part of the same school of thought as me.
Aww, thank you! Love meeting likeminded people!

I'm so glad I found this video. You've articulated a lot of the reasons why I'm excited to start my own AuthorTube channel. ^_^

Yes! I've gotten some comments lately that reflect that it's nice I'm being honest about it. It's a good impetus to keep going.
Peggy Spencer absolutely!! ❤️
Thanks so much for this! I start feeling that I wasn't doing this right.
I'm so glad I found your channel. Author Tube is mostly YA fantasy and I've been looking for someone writing romance!
Oh yay!! I’m so glad you’re here. And yes there are GOBBBSSSSS of fantasy/YA/traditional published authors here.
You are v cool.. Thank you for making videos
Thanks so much!
I like you already honesty is key
Absolutely! ❤️
Thank you!!!
I have thought about documenting my writing journey, but I keep changing my mind lol.
Do it! Even if it’s just for yourself. ❤️

All you gotta do is start uploading videos. There’s no gatekeeper! Excited for you. ❤️
Thank you!
So I’m working on an idea for a book. I am wondering if I should wait til I self publish a book before I start an author UA-cam channel?
Start now! One of my biggest regrets is not documenting from the beginning!
Thanks hun
❤️❤️❤️
Yea im the target audience lol new sub😊
I am new to author tube I would love to connect with other authors
You're in the right place!
so AUTHORTUBE is not a website? it just a writing channel you start?
Congrats on quitting your job to pursue your dream. #goals
Thank you so much!
So... This is on UA-cam?
Yep! It’s just a community where people chat about writing! If you search authortube a lot of stuff will come up!
Hello i need guidance in writing content. I want someone to advice me in content quality. Please
From what I've seen so far, Authortube appears to be a group of people come together to complain about things and attack other writers.
I'm pretty sure you just gave the definition of the internet as a whole.
Great video! I want to document my journey with my own channel as you have said. I don't know anything about what it is to publish a book yet so maybe someone can journey with me :)
