    They do have a very thick quality to them. They are almost more like mud flows than flash floods because of the amount of sediment and debris they are carrying. The reason the head waters tend to look a lot "thicker" is because the front of the flood is traveling a bit slower than the rest of the flood. This acts like a conveyor belt and carries a lot of debris up to the front "wall" which is fighting often dry almost flat ground to travel. Thank you! :)

    Very nice footage, well done. It was interesting to note how the first part of the flood often seems to be semi-solid mud and debris. I'd never seen one before.

  • @rankinstudio
    @rankinstudio  16 років тому +5

    Yes, its a flash flood carrying a lot of debris from miles up stream. The debris gets transported to the front "Wall" of the flood and causes it to slow a bit, also causing more debris to catch up. Its a cycle and makes for an interesting view. That is comprised of water, mud, rocks, bushes, and trees.

    I am a student at the U of Utah. I just went on to youtube looking for flash floods and actually thought about going to Southern Utah and filming them. I am glad that you have already done this! Sounds really fun!

    Thanks for posting this video. I've never seen a flash flood in person, but I always hear how dangerous they are. I think the footage from the second flood is pretty evident of how fast and powerful they are.

    Love this one too. Great angles really puts one there on the action. Great work with these. It is the first time I have seen footage of the approach of a flash flood, and you have it here multiple times. Truely awesome. Keep it up!

    Thank you for making me understand how arroyos/flashfloods work. Creeks in Ohio don't behave that way. They get dangerous, but they don't go from dry to roaaring in a heartbeat. Amazing.

    wow, the sediment load in these flash floods is amazing. its easy to see how just these periodic events can carve out huge canyons in these types of regions.

    Similar to what we see in New Mexico. My friends and I got stranded on a stretch of highway between two floods and had to wait for the water to subside and for giant boulders to get cleared out of the road. The power of water is truly amazing.

    The way the water moves, it reminds me of a centipede. My dad recently got caught up in a flash flood, and wasn't thinking when he opened the door and water poured into my mom's new 2012 Hyundia.

    They can last 8 - 12 - 24 hours depending how long the rain lasts. I've seen them go longer. Really depends on the persistence of the storm.

    Quite remarkable footage; gives you an idea of the relentless power of flowing water and mud. Did you see film of the massive flash flooding in Towoomba (Queensland) earlier this year? This was described as an "inland Tsumani". An entire small town downstream was erased from the face of the Earth in the blink of an eye. Some of the dead have still not been located. Nature can be ferocious.

    It is interesting watching the various clips you have compiled here. Some seem to be rather thick and don't move as freely as a purely water based flow would. Others seem to flow more like a lahar. I imagine it is quite exciting to be on the spot when one of these events happens.

    People are killed every year because they pitch their tents and camp in dry creek beds like these on clear nights.... only to be washed away by torrents of water! Great shots Rankinstudio!! I wish I had the one on video I witnessed in the Grand Canyon a few years back! We had studied these flash floods, and camped on high ground, but it was a beautiful starry night, and within 3 minutes from hearing it coming, it became an unbelievable torrent! It was pushing logs and bolders! Thanks!
