This is a demo video I put together myself of footage I've shot over the last few years chasing flash floods in southern utah. This footage is available for commercial use. For rates, contact David Rankin at David@rankinstudio.com

They do have a very thick quality to them. They are almost more like mud flows than flash floods because of the amount of sediment and debris they are carrying. The reason the head waters tend to look a lot "thicker" is because the front of the flood is traveling a bit slower than the rest of the flood. This acts like a conveyor belt and carries a lot of debris up to the front "wall" which is fighting often dry almost flat ground to travel. Thank you! :)
Very nice footage, well done. It was interesting to note how the first part of the flood often seems to be semi-solid mud and debris. I'd never seen one before.
Yes, its a flash flood carrying a lot of debris from miles up stream. The debris gets transported to the front "Wall" of the flood and causes it to slow a bit, also causing more debris to catch up. Its a cycle and makes for an interesting view. That is comprised of water, mud, rocks, bushes, and trees.
I am a student at the U of Utah. I just went on to youtube looking for flash floods and actually thought about going to Southern Utah and filming them. I am glad that you have already done this! Sounds really fun!
Thanks for posting this video. I've never seen a flash flood in person, but I always hear how dangerous they are. I think the footage from the second flood is pretty evident of how fast and powerful they are.
Wow, I've never seen anything like this! Thanks for sharing.
Love this one too. Great angles really puts one there on the action. Great work with these. It is the first time I have seen footage of the approach of a flash flood, and you have it here multiple times. Truely awesome. Keep it up!
Thank you so much for posting this. I've always wanted to know what the start of a flash flood looked like without being swept away !!
Thank you for making me understand how arroyos/flashfloods work. Creeks in Ohio don't behave that way. They get dangerous, but they don't go from dry to roaaring in a heartbeat. Amazing.
wow, the sediment load in these flash floods is amazing. its easy to see how just these periodic events can carve out huge canyons in these types of regions.
I live in Phoenix for 31 years and always wondered what the begining of a flash flood looked like! Thanks to you and the internet, I know now! :)
Amazing footage. The flood doesn't even look like it's moving that fast until you are right by it.
Wow! Been 4 wheeling in Arizona for years and have been stopped by flash floods but never seen the beginning of one. Awesome footage!
I didn't have much hope of finding REAL video of flash flooding- and here it is. Great job, thanks for sharing this!
the sound of the foam is so awesome :p and the rocks rolling over the bottom :) that's just natures rock and roll :)
amazing job capturing that its pretty rare to catch one like that, i like how you kept driving ahead of it and getting the good close up shots, good job.
I have to say it was A PRIVILEDGE watching your work!
Thank you so much for posting this. !!
Similar to what we see in New Mexico. My friends and I got stranded on a stretch of highway between two floods and had to wait for the water to subside and for giant boulders to get cleared out of the road. The power of water is truly amazing.
Awesome footage. Nice work dude!
Great footage! Thanks for sharing.
I have never seen the begining of a flash flood before. That was great....thanks for sharing!
fantastic shots
Epic footage. Wadi washes are sure a thing of beauty. thanks for running to stay in front of it!!!
thank you for sharing this amazing footage
The way the water moves, it reminds me of a centipede. My dad recently got caught up in a flash flood, and wasn't thinking when he opened the door and water poured into my mom's new 2012 Hyundia.
amazing footage, keep up the good work
amazing footage more of this please! keep up the good work :)
the crumbly one at 2:50 was my favorite. great video
They can last 8 - 12 - 24 hours depending how long the rain lasts. I've seen them go longer. Really depends on the persistence of the storm.
Cheers :)
you guys kept getting there at the perfect moment!
Amazing footage!
You deserve some kind of recognition for all the work that you must have gone through to race ahead of the flood waters so many times for multiple footages. Was that a handy motorbike I heard firing up?
Hey thanks :) I appreciate it. I have a lot of time invested into capturing these things!
Quite remarkable footage; gives you an idea of the relentless power of flowing water and mud. Did you see film of the massive flash flooding in Towoomba (Queensland) earlier this year? This was described as an "inland Tsumani". An entire small town downstream was erased from the face of the Earth in the blink of an eye. Some of the dead have still not been located. Nature can be ferocious.
Great video! It'd probably be amazing to see this from an aerial perspective.
great debris flow shots !!
thanks for risking you safety to let us see this amazing stuff :)
Awesome footage!
Really great video, Well done
I come from an area which does not have 'flash floods' ... so it was always difficutl to grasp just what that meant. NOW I get it. Thanks.. YOu are doing a great service. .. plus.. it's way cool... Take Care.
Kind of reminds me of the Universal Studios flood set except your footage is WAY MORE COOLER!!
Awesome video!
I've heard this happens in the desert and now I got to see it, great video.
that was amazing! thanks for not talking thru the whole thing too. very nice work!
Wow this is so cool!!! the sound is amazing
awesome footage, was on tenterhooks when i realised how close you had to be in order to catch this on film. two thumbs up.
Awesome videos!
Amazing footage! Thanks for sharing. I had no idea it works like that. I'd have thought it would slowly rise and not be a wall of water & debris.
The rumbling noise it makes is intense!
Wow!
Amazing images.
Wow. Sludge!
It's amazing how it moves so fast, even after it's caught all those plants/rocks/branches and a lot of earth in it, :D.
Would have loved to seen these for myself...sadly I live in England :(
Not much chance of getting to the desert XD
very very nice footage man, well done ,thanks for the efforts.
Amazing. I couldn't help thinking narrow canyon and there you are. End game for sure.
You could totally mud kayak on that stufF! Great vids, impressive nature. Hope you enjoy the desert enough for the both of us!
It will be a long time until I get to hike through them
wow thats amazing. thanks for putting it on :)
Cool. Astonishing how thick it is.
This is awesome. Its unbelievable how powerful mother nature is
@rankinstudio
It is interesting watching the various clips you have compiled here. Some seem to be rather thick and don't move as freely as a purely water based flow would. Others seem to flow more like a lahar. I imagine it is quite exciting to be on the spot when one of these events happens.
Great footage!
the zoom and the low camera angles make it look massive at points
Peaceful one second deadly the next. Amazing vid!
Great vid. What a blast!!!
Thank you for showing such scary footage. Flash flood is always happening in our islands since we get 400 inches of rain per year (Pohnpei, Micronesia). Keep up the good work.
Very nice videos of southwest flood events!
WOW.......the way is just carves everything in it's path and how soapy muddy it gets is just crazy! It roars over the land! Freaky! Very nice video!
very good coverage
I love when he films it coming at him and then jumps out at the last second.
the most amazing flash flood footoges I´ve ever seen
very interesting video.. great job!
excellent job keeping ahead amazing footage fantastic to see thanks for posting
Really cool videos dude.
Yes, it rains a lot before they come through. Most of the heavy rain can fall 40+ miles away and the floods can take up to 6 hours to arrive.
fantastic video !keep up good work, I like watching this !
Yes, its really amazing how many people loose their lives to these things each year. Hope some good footage will raise awareness.
wow nature at its best, I was caught in a flood like that in Nigeria and never really understood what was going on till now. great photography.
Rgards Mark (UK)
Thanks for the kind words. I remember being told about these also, but nobody I talked to could say they had seen a wall of water, so I decided to start filming them. If there was any doubt...it's gone now ;)
Cheers!
David
WOW!!!! thats AWESOME!!!! ive never seen one and it looks like clay amazing video(nice camera handling)
People are killed every year because they pitch their tents and camp in dry creek beds like these on clear nights.... only to be washed away by torrents of water! Great shots Rankinstudio!! I wish I had the one on video I witnessed in the Grand Canyon a few years back! We had studied these flash floods, and camped on high ground, but it was a beautiful starry night, and within 3 minutes from hearing it coming, it became an unbelievable torrent! It was pushing logs and bolders! Thanks!
great footage!!
great shot of the flash flood - rare to catch
awsum video, well done!!
That's awesome!
Amazing footage
great vids
Should be called a flash mud. This vid is supper cool thanks
that is cool. i love seeing stuff like that. mother nature is awsome
How often do such flash floods occur in S.Utah? Are they frequent or rare?I liked the film.
Awesome. Nice job and cool Jeep. I had a 74 Renegade back in the day. Great vehicle. Cheers, A
Awsome footage dude... was surprised to see all that mud and junk being pushed by it.
Interesting! Looks like a mud flow!
Timed them perfectly!
That's very together, finding out where to be when, and very brave standing right in its path. Kudos to you. Hope you get rewarded with this footage some day, and hope you have it in better res. Here is my local flood. I don't seem to know how to create a video response but you can search for Emerson Creek Flood.
Thanks :)
Yea, that thought has crossed my mind a few times also. Figure a way to pull it off lol.
Amazing footage. In some shots, I'm reminded of the movie "The Blob".
hell yeah!
awesome video....loved it!
Thank you :) They are an awesome thing
thanks for the cool video. honestly, i never believed flash floods like this were even possible. i guess i had to see it to believe it :p
Really nice! :)
that's crazy how it makes that rumbling sound!
The power of nature...amazing
