  • Here's a soundclip of a 1940's Regal Small Jumbo that has been X-braced by Folkway's Mark Stutman.
The guitar sold prior to us listing it on our website, but we did manage to shoot this video with Jason Fowler a while ago, which hopefully shows a little bit of what it's all about.
The X brace conversion process has been documented in a blog post on our website. Here's a link to it, if you'd like to know more about what went into this restoration/modification:

Just came across this and blown away by the tonal characteristics. Great wood......proper execution... a fine example. Was this built at Gibson and labeled for Regal?

Nice to hear it. This guitar was built by Regal in the late 1940's. It was ladder braced originally, but was rebraced with scalloped X bracing that was styled after a 30's Martin OM. The top was thinned, the bridge replaced, the neck reset, and fingerboard reprofiled for playability. Way more work than the guitar was worth, but it was a fun covid lockdown project.

Beautiful, the bass sounds very warm and precise. Was it laterally braced originally this Regal ?

It was originally a ladder-braced guitar. The top was thinned by about 20% and then the top was rebraced with early 30's Martin OM proportions.
