Dear Mr. Shan, outstanding what you do, after desperate years of trying comping, I received the enlightenment from you, thank you so much, brilliant music skills and sense conveyed, you have a beautiful language as well
I've been struggling to learn how to comp jazz for YEARS and now that I finally found your channel it brings me hope that I'll be able to understand the art of comping. Thanks for the awesome video!
Thanks from a guitarist! Got some great perspective on the comping skills I’ve been working on AND some insight into the pianist (really great player) I’m so fortunate to sit in with regularly.
I just discovered your channel. Fantastic stuff! I’m upping my jazz piano game thanks to practicing along with your lessons. Thanks for sharing what you’ve learned!
Thanks! This is what I would love to learn more than anything. I am not interested too much in single not lines and licks. I just love listening to the guys who hold down those cool chords in the background.
I've actually been looking for tips on how to comp in the "how not to do it" style. One of the things I've been missing from guitar is that kind of full and lively sound. It's so simple on a guitar when you can just alter the stroke. Really want a similar vibe for the piano but like 90% of comping tutorials are "here's how to hit those understated jazz chords".
I like this a lot. Is there something I can watch that explains harmony voicings with vocalists? Like, should your highest not not be what the vocals are doing? Thanks
Great content. However you need to balance to audio levels to a standard (such as -14 LUFS). As it is, the ad content is about 300% LOUDER than your voice content.
This great advice! Pearls! I am on the fluency course now working on I’m in the mood for love and this will be things I need to adjust when I hear walking bass lines and the early and lates! Thank you so much Shan!
Nice video!! But is there a process how to get there. I mean, did you learned comping only from recordings or did you also worked with some books? My problem is that i hear so many great stuf on the recordings but its often a bit difficult to know exactly what their doing so. Any suggestions on how to approach this? Im not a complete beginner i do have several years of piano experience but as it comes to jazz, I probably will always feel like a beginner anyways 😅
Hi Richard, the main thing for me, is to know the chords, inversions and voicings. I sincerely believe that you can't learn jazz or accompanying from a book. Also, I find that transcribing just short little phrases helps improve the ear. Wishing you all the best with your playing! Shan
Brilliant. This is one of those videos that nobody else is doing, which makes it even more valuable!
more comping lesson please!

Thank you Esmeralda. You can do it!
Love your style, both musically and interpersonally. Very clear, calm delivery with great examples. Learned a lot - thank you!
Wow, thank you! I'm so pleased it helped and I wish you good jazz.
The first tip was something definitely I needed to hear. Hands together. Makes so much sense.
That makes so much difference when trying to swing. Glad it helped Samuel. 🙂
Hope your playing is going well.
The fact that these videos dont have 100x as many views is proof the algorithm is bad for educational content
The perfect hangover cure after my birthday party yesterday - a comping lesson! Thanks Shan - you’ve started my day with a smile.
Glad to be of service 🙂. A very happy birthday to you!

Wow , where did you find those chords progressions??
In the jazz language :)
