    @02:05:05 Edward, instead of going for crude market and getting green for whooping 34, you should have gone for upgrades. Take the one that gives free secondary action for 20, block additional upgrade and use free additional action to go to market 1...and buy the 4 greens you needed for half the price. I know it's much easier from this point of view though 😂

    I've had the chance to watch it played live and to play it twice. It has a lot going for it. The amount that I improved from the first game to the second makes me want to play again and explore other strategies.

    Our last game had a runaway leader because of the ability to block off Upgrades, since the first couple of rounds for everyone is straight up buying pipe tiles and crude to get some cash flow going, once enough cash was made from selling to Refined Markets by round 3 or so one of our players bought 2 Upgrades thus blocking off all but 1 for the rest of that year. By early year 2 he was able to gain level 2 Upgrade in Machines thus blocking the good Upgrades again and was uncatchable by end of year 2.

    I love this game. I’m so bad at creating an efficient pipe network.

    2:29:45 I'm pretty sure you can't place your worker on a machine tile to run all the pipelines connected to it. Or did I miss a rule?

    I really liked the game, although a little abstract for my taste. It would be nice to have a World map representing the pipeline network, and when you build a pipeline that matches the length and colour of one of the pipelines on the map you can claim it to get some bonuses, special contracts or similar. Even you could interconnect contracts with the pipelines in the World map, and when you claim a pipeline you can block the access to the related contract, or steal it from other player that has already completed it. BTW, I like cutthroat games 😉

      A world map would be weird. I get the look of the game isn’t for everyone for sure. I am on the opposite end of the spectrum, I love when games use mainly graphic design as the artwork. It looks so clean and organized. Again, these are just looks. The actual gameplay, I have no clue as I haven’t played the game. As far as the visual layout, it makes sense if it was their intentions. The pipelines under the city is fitting because that’s where a lot of the inter workings of a city are. Cutthroat games are fun but they don’t really sell well which is why many aren’t published or sell well. It’s unfortunate but people are people and most can’t handle a savage defeat.

    Without the bonus actions, how many turns do you make per game? Is it only 18?

    • @rhubarb1073
      @rhubarb1073 5 років тому

      Yup. 18 actions. If you don't take advantage of machines, contracts, and paying for secondary actions, you're not going to be getting much done.

  • @HenryRSeymour

    Just to clarify, if a pipeline is connected to a machine you will always get to score it twice, correct?

    This game does not give you much opening moves. you must do exactly 2 things as your first move since initial money is tight and you must run your engine early in the game. Either straight up buy a couple of pipes or buy a couple of cheap crude oil barrels. I was really hoping for a diverse number of opening moves but this game just offers very little for me. Also, the gameplay feels like brass and viticulture combined and does not offer unique gaming experience for me since I own both.

    Thank you for another great play through, pity that the theme of this game leaves me completely uninterested. Good luck on the KS campaign!

      From reading the rules, I believe they changed purchasing upgrades from a Max of 2, to as many as you want to purchase.

    This playthrough made me cancel my pledge. I was hoping for a bit more strategic depth but the tile laying seems to be the prominent part with the other actions purely an accessory. Interaction seems low and the upgrade system a bit clunky. Maybe you guys just played a very basic game and I am missing all the strategy. Also for an economic game the money does not circulate much and the loans seem rather pointless (with the odd choice of being unable to repay them). Solid pass, but thank you for the show.

    • @rhubarb1073

      IMO this game's a lot more strategic than you think it is. Laying pipes is important, but from my experience most of the strategy comes from trying to get the most out of your actions. If your strat in this game is to build build build build, then run sell run sell run sell, you're gonna burn through your actions and not make any money. The fun here is to look at the end game bonuses, choose a strat that fixates on those, and set up your pipes just enough to have an engine that can fulfill that. Building machines and having contracts are crucial, so you can take a board action, run your pipes, and sell some oil in one turn. I've played it maybe 6 times, but every time has been an entirely different scenario.

      @@rhubarb1073 _"from my experience most of the strategy comes from trying to get the most out of your actions."_
      That applies to literally every single (at least euro) board game ever.

    • @rhubarb1073
      @rhubarb1073 3 роки тому

      @@markanderson100 yeah it's true but in pipeline really milking your actions is absolutely necessary. If you don't know how to manage them well you end up getting nothing done. I haven't played this shit in a while now but I remember higher level games ending up with wayyy more points (or whatever) than people who have only played 10 or so games

    • @markanderson100
      @markanderson100 3 роки тому +1

      @@rhubarb1073 I see what you're trying to say, but again, that's literally every game that doesn't have output randomness.
      Not sure if you're new to modern board gaming hobby or how much experience you have with a variety of board games, but what you're claiming to be unique to Pipeline isn't so at all.
