Hi Michael, I don't wish to be pendantic; however, I believe the chord progression is : the 1 (G major) to the 3 altered (B major) to the 4 (C major))... then the 4 as a minor ( Cminor).... am I mistaken? It is used in Beatles songs and a great use of it in "The Air that I breathe" by the Hollies and beautifully covered by KD Lang. Try following the root of each chord with its 3rd.
Yeah, Radiohead actually had to pay royalties to The Hollies due to Creep's similarly to The Air That I Breathe (mostly because they also borrowed part of the melody)
Yeah so - I screwed up big. The moment I listened back to this I was like OMG it’s BMA! How on death did I mess this up?! But these are live & unedited… and I’m human. So I posted it instead of doing it over and faking it. Regardless … the “hard 3” as I like to call it (3 ma) is such a great change and really elevates the tune. As Michael knese suggested, follow the 3rds. Having the D# is brutal and brilliant. Thx brother!!

I was there for this. Right in front of the stage between the barriers working for the festivals film crew. This cover surprised and blew everyone away. Such a great show.
He held back until it was time to climb that peak and drop that bomb. That desending finish was badass. When Prince lets go, nothing but pure emotional magic. His guitar playing has historically been criminally underrated.
There are a few musician who can cover any song and make them their own. Prince is one of those select few. Awesome cover by the one and only purple one
Prince doing Best Of You at the Super Bowl half time, after a few years of quasi-feuding with Foo Fighter is a Highlight performance for me. AND it's the third best performance in that halftime show.. so it tells you a lot about Prince, his talent, his choices and his tastes...
Wow, you finally found it. This is perhaps the greatest cover ever, and further proof Prince was the best there ever was. This one is a slow burn but such an amazing performance.
Prince blocked this for years from UA-cam. Radiohead was pissed because they said it was their song and he has no business trying to control it. They were honored he covered it and liked his version very much. But they were upset he controlled his version. Prince was always this way. He wanted to release only what he thought was worthy of release. He wished everyone to see him live and not via leaked footage. I respect him for this. But it did hurt him early on. But in the long run, prince was right again. He was always way ahead of his time and the curve.
Dont forget, Thom Yorke sings this but has 2 great guitarists on either side! One on rhythm, another on lead . Prince can rip all 3, genius level.🎸 Plus you know he can play those drums, synths anything he wanted . Sure Thom Yorke is very talented but limited, Nothing Compares to Prince.... maybe Jimi was on that Level....
I didn't start the same way most guitar players did, I discovered Prince in 1982 and he immediately made me want to play guitar. A lot of people don't realize this but Prince Mastered 28 different that's ridiculous and incredible.
I've hooked into Prince's ''Chaos & Disorder'' in the last few years. Recorded as a snub to the label and the producers, it's deliriously sardonic and bristling with raw energy. Rock and roll at its finest.
Prince didn't like singing negative lyrics, so he refrained from using the word "creep" when doing this cover. He loved the song, but disliked the negativity.
I remember hearing something about this when it was originally posted - Prince (and/or representatives) tried to do a copyright strike against it but some folks in Radiohead's camp said "hey it's our song, we want to see it!" so the recording remained available. This was before the automated copyright strikes, I'm sure. Unless that story was completely made-up, which is also possible (it is the internet, after all)
Prince did not allow any videos on youtube because he was in total control of the distribution of his music and he wanted to remove this video but Radiohead did not allow the removal of this video since the music right belonged to them
Miss Cora Coleman on the drums! She's actually one of my least favorite of Prince's drummers, but her timing is impeccable. I always love watching your reactions to Prince performances, so thank you for this one! There is also a performance of Prince's song "Shhh" from this Coachella show that features Miss CC a lot on drums. Prince's guitar work is stellar on that one as well.

I always thought EVH, SRV and Prince were the best guitarists and oddly enough they were all about the same age. My generation peaked rock guitar because the Beatles made us want to rear it up.
Prince, in my opinion was/is the Greatest of ALL TIME. In so many avenues. Look up greek beliefs as true entertainment genius. You needed to do all aspects. sing, write, dance, act, direct, produce, etc. Yup. "P"did it all. I cant think if any1 b4 or since
Prince is the best, and that's one of my favourite solos of his. But Michael, you gotta re-edit this and correct the second chord: B major, not Bminor. It's almost the hook of the whole tune.
That off beat pause with the hit was there in the original.. Prince just took it further cause he liked it and had the rhythm chops to do it.. Prince just loved good music and was good at making good music is what I wanna say...
He did. He misspoke a couple of times but corrected it. However, that *is* a B major they play and Michael is playing the expected minor. Later on I think he catches himself because by 7:30 he starts playing it major. I, III, IV, iv.

Why on earth would anyone think that? He just loved the song (a lot of people do) and it connects with a lot of people. It's certainly not Radiohead's favorite Radiohead song by a long shot. It's one of the most covered songs ever, and it's the lyrics more so than the song that so many people connect with.
I kind of hate this cover, and I love both Radiohead and Creep. He's playing the chord progression twice as fast as he's singing, so the melody and chords don't match.
I love Prince but this was kind of a boring cover tbh outside of the solo. Like compare his “emotion” behind the lyrics to that “Radiohead - Creep (Best Live Version)” video on UA-cam. One makes me actually cry (i.e., Radiohead) the other doesn’t make me feel anything

If you didn't wish to be pendantic, why did you?
It's not being pedantic to point that out - that's a pretty huge difference in harmony. Doesn't fit the definition of pedantic.

Supposedly Radiohead/Yorke fought to keep this up on UA-cam.
This is true. Read my comment. Yorke was upset that prince had control over this
The way that Prince can appear so casual but be so completely in command of the music and the space is amazing.

I think we are going to forgive MP the slip up on the III chord as he was channeling 80s sports star in the outfit today!

The first time I heard this Prince version, I realized it was better than the original. Prince took and owned this song, and live!
Na, it’s just different
Absolutely love your channel. Right quick, that's a major 3rd they're playing, not minor. I, III, IV, iv.
Edit: I see that you do go major by 7:30.
Michael, what makes Prince's playing style sound so raw, dirty and emotional? (asks a music novice)
Total mastery of melody paths and the emotional courage to go wherever his soul pulls him
Thank U from south-western France !
Great video and love this cover, ever since I first heard it. Question...the III sounds major to me...? Anyhow, thanks for doing this.
Specifically, that C to C minor, there's just something about it.
On drums is CC Coleman Dunham.

The B major gives that ring to the progression. Great video!
