CORRECTION, PASSAGE 1, QUESTION 2, SPOILERS BELOW.... .... .... ... .. ... ... ... The answer key says that "C" is correct but "A" or "C" could be correct. Some have argued that "D" should also be considered a possible answer but I still consider "D" incorrect because it does not imply that she can "easily" find a job, the person in the conversation does say "we can sign you up for the work-study program no problem", but that is NOT the same as easy finding a job. Thank you for bringing this to my attention and don't hesitate to ask and challenge any other answers :)
The argument I would like to make here is that in option A, the second part of the statement says finding a job, which is not specific to the work-study program and can be irrelevant. For option C, the professor never really implies that it is a good decision and only that they can "definitely" sign her up for the work study program, and also the fact that he tells her to try 10 hours a week first shows that he knows that she should be cautious to see if it is indeed a good decision. Which now leads to option D, clarifying why she can "easily" get on the work study program (since definitely means its mostly guaranteed) due to her good grades/ being a good student. Edit: I wanted to ask this, since in your reasoning I felt you made the point that the word "no problem" doesnt mean easy. But I would say it was the word "definitely" that implies that she would get it easily. If you do check this and make further points, can you give a few tips on how to avoid mixups like this if i did interpret this wrong? Since to me option D was the most direct and obvious connection.
@@akawolzie7157 thank you for your thoughtful comment, I think I understand your point and will address the following: "Which now leads to option D, clarifying why she can "easily" get on the work-study program (since definitely means its mostly guaranteed) due to her good grades/ being a good student." Choice D states "The student will easily be able to find a job on campus because she has good grades" --> good grades is not the same as being a good student. I have already explained the rationale for the other choices extensively. -- In regards to advice on mix-ups, they happen often, even to native speakers and TOEFL teachers like myself. When you encounter one, identify what the problem was and keep it in mind to avoid it next time, that's about all you can do really. Language is dense and contextual so there is no one rule I can give in a quick UA-cam comment to solve all your problems... unfortunately. Just take it one at a time.
Is been 2 years since i took the toefl, it was a crazy experience. I am now preparing for SAT and as an international student I am so lost as I was when I first took the toefl. That is why I came back here to feel some guidance again and good Lord is so nostalgic! It made me cry. You have no idea just how many young students all around the world rely on your content, we grow with no help or guidance whatsoever, the whole american dream of a decent education feels so hard and so far, many of us are the first generation on our whole blood to even get a chance to get higher education. The bravest risk it all and strike to travel all across the globe for a better future, with people like u as our only help and company, is a journey. I just wanted to say thank u man. Those proud claps you do, after a long day of hard work, gave me hope to keep going.
Hi Josh! Thank you for all the materials and joy you share with us. I got my results this week and scored 96/120, enough to go to the master's program I am admitted to. Thank you once again and wish you all the best. I also write to encourage people here: I had less than 1 month to prepare, a crazy routine working more than 8h/day, and the usual pressure we all have for many reasons. You can totally do it. Cheers from Brazil!
Hi My English is not very good but i tried to writting, so i have a questions, if i practice my English for one year, do You think i Will do a this exam?? I going to study pending 4 hours for day
I just got my TOEFL scores and would like to show my appreciation for your videos! I got 108 out of 120 and had only 2-3 days to prepare myself, which I did with the help of your youtube videos. Thank you so much!
@@fma3852 Hi! Since I only had a couple of days to prepare myself, I had to focus on my main weakness - that was speaking. I practiced all of the sessions with the help of UA-cam videos, but I focused more on speaking. TOEFL is a really long test so my main tip is to remain focused and calm. Go through the sessions after taking a minute to breath, and don’t let anxiety stress you out. What really helped me was to take smart notes; there are some videos about that too. You should focus on the important topics, especially on Writing and Speaking. For writing, I’d say you should read the questions first, not the entire text first because it would just make you waste time. Sometimes the answer really is the most obvious one! Hope this helps a little bit and good luck!!!!!
Hello! I'd like to take a moment to thank Josh for putting out such wonderful videos to help the students. I got my results a couple of days back. I scored a 114 ( R:30 L:26 S:29 W:29) . I only followed TST Prep and Notefull videos to achieve this score after studying for a week. I found the templates and tests helpful in my preparation. Thank you Josh!
That's why you need to take notes. The lectures are really long and so are the conversations. There are a lot of details, and you have questions about some of those details. Will be nearly impossible to answer if you don't have good notes for it. Learn more about note-taking in this article - tstprep.com/articles/toefl/taking-notes-for-the-listening-section-of-the-toefl-test/. Hope you find it useful!
@@fuchryy You can take notes whenever you like. The only exception is at the beginning of a section when they are reading directions (or during the 10-minute break time in the middle of the test)
Agree with you, same me either. I tested listening IELTS and my score was ban 4,5 for correct >15, but for toefl I got 12 correct. It’s hard for me to remember even I wrote the key words😢
I just tested on Saturday, July 23 and got my results yesterday...scored 108 overall. I prepared for a month, borrowed the TOEFL books from the library, and studied hard but the videos and online resources from TSL website made a HUGE difference. As a native speaker this is why I have a problem with the test. The first question in the real world could be b or c. "If I don't start paying of my student loans now I am going to be strapped for cash after graduation so I was hoping I would be able to join the work study program and get a job on campus." She states her reason which is basically " I want to start paying off my student loans" THEREFORE I want to join work study. The reason is so she can pay off loans, so she needs a job which is provided by work study. She probably would not be there in the first place if she didn't have to worry about the loans so, the rooted reason is not to work study, but is to pay off loans. Work study is just the means to do this. Unless I studied for how these questions are supposed to be answered, I wouldn't get a perfect score.
I want to take a short moment to thank you, Josh! Your free videos help a lot of students around the world to study abroad and follow their dreams! Can't get my head around how the answer for question 2 passage 1 is C. What does being a good student has to do with it being a good decision? he even warns her about how working might hurt her grades
Good question Argentino. This question type is "understand the function" and you have to focus on the repeated phrase in the question rather than the passage as a whole. In this case, for this particular excerpt, C is the best answer.
I agree. For Passage 1, Question 2, the answer C just doesn’t make any sense. The explanation doesn’t either. Sorry about saying this. Unless, the pause between “ you’re a smart student” and “ we can definitely sign you up…” a bit longer to make them more separated, to make the first part closer to the beginning of the conversation, the part about wanting to sign up for the work-study program, rather than to “we can definitely sign you up….”. Then the being smart part would be more relatable to her making a good decision. Just saying.
@@TSTPrep native american english here. That answer makes no sense, and neither does this explanation! A is clearly the best answer, and I'd even choose D over C. No speaker would ever mean C with the phrase in the question.

Hello everyone! My name is Alexandre Araújo de Carvalho. I am 35 years old. I am from Brazil. I have been studying English for three hours. Thank you so much.
Hi, Josh! I just came here to thank you and TST Prep for making all these amazing videos available. I scored 100 (R26, L26, S24, W24) in my first time taking the test. Now I am able to apply for the universities I want. I also want to express my opinion about the test day. As you said on the other video, it is important to practice doing the test in a noisy place. I didn't, so having people talking around me really distracted me during the test.
Thank you! For me it was mainly during the Reading section when people were arriving at the room while I was already doing the test. Also when I started the Writing section and some people were still in the Speaking section.
I took the TOEFL forty years ago and got an excellent score which gave me the confidence to go to university and complete an undergraduate degree. I have been speaking English almost exclusively since then. I did not do as well in this practice test as I thought I would. I am wondering if I got tired brain cells in my retirement years.
Haha and good question! Listening and reading academic passages in English is a much different skill than how we use language every day, so it would be perfectly natural to perform poorly on this test if you haven't been in school for a while, and this goes for the average native speaker as well. I don't think my parents would do great on the TOEFL, haha.

Hi Josh, thanks for your tests. I've done pretty much all of your Listenings and Readings now and I find that it's very noticeable that you often include multiple answer choices that say almost the same thing. For example, here in passage 5, task 1, answer options b and d. I can't understand why d should be wrong here. At the end of the lecture, the professor even repeats the various "steps" that led to life on earth. Even if they may not be complete. -> proteins from space -> photosenthysis etc.
You can find all answer explanations in the downloadable PDF in the description, but in general, there are some tricky questions and answer choices in the TOEFL iBT so be prepared for answer choices that are similar.
Am grateful for the videos you always share with us. Am preparing to do the test soon. Kindly wish me success. I know I'll get o great score and I pray to God to fulfill that🙏
I took this test because i have nothing to do in my free time and it turns out that i got only 6 wrong answers for total 28 questions. I've never really serious about learning english and until now i'm still sucks with speaking (everything actually). But since i took this test maybe i should take it seriously to learn english and enhance my communication skill. Wish me luck😊
There are some parts of the talk that I can't listen, maybe it must be because I'm not relating with some words. Thank you for the transcripts, it is helping me to improve my listening.
If you struggle a lot with the TOEFL Listening, I would suggest investing time in a site like LingQ where you can do some extensive listening that is not connected to the TOEFL, that way you can build your skills and vocabulary with content that is a little bit easier before moving ahead with the TOEFL.
Thank you for these videos that helped me a lot. On my first exam I got 75, on second 87 and tomorrow I have my final exam. I hope I could get somethng between 90-100
i always pass this tests with c1, but in the jobs they want "conversational" wich means street vocabulary, just to look more "native" doesn't matter if you really know what's happening
Hi there and sorry about your negative experience with job interviews. Yeah, this test is designed to see if you are ready to enroll in an English-speaking university, which is a bit different from casual conversations.
Hi Josh... First of all I would like to thank you for doing helpful series of videos. I have a problem regarding 2nd question of 2nd passage. In that question, the lecturer's following statement misled me to select D as the correct answer. "I think it is natural for us humans to believe we are the center of the universe". Can you elaborate on your argument to select A as the best answer between A and D. Obviously, B and C can be eliminated. Thanks.
Hi there and thank you for commenting. D could not be the answer because of the phrase "just made more sense." That is implying it made more sense to everyone. That essential makes the answer too extreme and unprovable. Also, there is direct evidence for A given by the professor. Listen to the passage again and let me know if you can hear it. :)
l got a 23/28 even though l didn't even know what a TOEFL test was yen minutes prior to starting this video (l'm Argentinian with English as my second language)... pretty good, one could argue. :D
Lecture 5- Q3) How does the professor Organize the lecture? Option c) can be counted? She list the series of events that occured earlier in Earth's history.
You can find all answer explanations in this document. I believe downloading and looking at that will be more helpful since it will have explanations to ALL of the answers, including the one you mentioned - drive.google.com/file/d/14PliZw_3DQnpQS4UVzccE0E2wFqdRYHs/view?usp=sharing
Hi, thanks for your video. It's really helpful. I want to ask you some questions On Passage: 1 I got 3 number correct answers 2 I got 4 number correct answers 3 I got 5 number correct answers 4 I got 3 number correct answers 5 I got 3 number correct answers from my answers, how to calculate that? thank you
At the end of this practice test, you will find an answer key, information to help determine your score, and explanations of the answers. drive.google.com/file/d/14PliZw_3DQnpQS4UVzccE0E2wFqdRYHs/view?usp=sharing

Please, where's the model answer, I couldn't find it to check my score ?
@@basmanabil5035 Here is the link - drive.google.com/file/d/14PliZw_3DQnpQS4UVzccE0E2wFqdRYHs/view?usp=sharing
Heyyy tomorrow is my tofel home edition exam please give me some tips!!!
Omg congrats was the test hard and can you give some tips I will really appreciate
@Giovanna Cuzziol Longo, congratulations! Happy to help and thanks for letting me know. This motivates me to do more!

Great news! Congratulations on your score. We are so happy to hear you can move on to the next phase of your life.
I can understand English but memorizing an entire conversation in a few seconds is a complete different matter..
@@TSTPrep is it ok to take a notes while during the test ?
@@fuchryy You can take notes whenever you like. The only exception is at the beginning of a section when they are reading directions (or during the 10-minute break time in the middle of the test)

Agree with you, same me either. I tested listening IELTS and my score was ban 4,5 for correct >15, but for toefl I got 12 correct. It’s hard for me to remember even I wrote the key words😢

I had the same reasoning and experience.

Hi Karen, congratulations on your score and thank you for your thoughtful comment.
Hey! Congratulations! The distraction was majorly during which of the sections?
Thank you! For me it was mainly during the Reading section when people were arriving at the room while I was already doing the test. Also when I started the Writing section and some people were still in the Speaking section.
"Who discorver uranus" this part will make me fail. :D
Hi Josh,
I want to say thank you for all these practices, templates and the materials you share with us.

Hi, Josh!! Thanks so much for your help! These tools are very useful!
at first, her English was too fast for me like "I figured I'd see if you want to blah blah..." but gradually became comfortable.
Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Hey ! I have started my practice from today . Thank you for this much better feel here :)

If you struggle a lot with the TOEFL Listening, I would suggest investing time in a site like LingQ where you can do some extensive listening that is not connected to the TOEFL, that way you can build your skills and vocabulary with content that is a little bit easier before moving ahead with the TOEFL.

i always pass this tests with c1, but in the jobs they want "conversational" wich means street vocabulary, just to look more "native" doesn't matter if you really know what's happening
Hi there and sorry about your negative experience with job interviews. Yeah, this test is designed to see if you are ready to enroll in an English-speaking university, which is a bit different from casual conversations.
@@TSTPrep it is C1, but still
If I knew that the test was this easy, I would always love that!
l got a 23/28 even though l didn't even know what a TOEFL test was yen minutes prior to starting this video (l'm Argentinian with English as my second language)... pretty good, one could argue. :D
