I used crayons in some of my drawings and they turned out very well! Even though people say that crayons are 'to cheap to use for REAL art' I've used them for several projects and they work just fine. The pigment is just fine and I think that it doesn't need to be expensive to be able to do a good job at colouring.
I used to use crayons all the time up until a few years ago. I think even in my senior project in high school, I used crayons to do some of the art :) I'm kind of want to get back into it again and see what I could do with them. Maybe a cool idea for a video/ drawing is to take an old drawing you did in crayon and re-draw it again in crayon. So it would be like a "draw this again" challenge, but you are still using the same medium.
Even though they are super cheap, they actually feel kind of expensive. They are pretty consistent with their lay down of pigment. They feel so smooth. And, they're super pigmented! That's awesome that you used them in your senior project, I wish I thought of that when I was doing my final assignments in art class! I'll have to try that crayon redraw challenge idea, that sounds cool! I think I only ever made 3-4 drawings with them in a sketchbook from 2015, then completely forgot about them. Maybe I'll dig them up one day and try to re-create them!
as a Crayola fanatic, the glitter crayons are normal colors from the regular roster with glitter in it, they used to have names but don't anymore. However the metallic colors are all individual and have their own colors. They've been in rotation since 2002 so I'm beginning to think of them as the new neon colors from when i was a kid, which stayed as these odd sort of specialty crayons and then were just integrated into rotation, rest in peace blizzard blue and magic mint. i'd like it if they'd unretire all fourteen colors so far, add 18 and get rid of the glitter crayons for a big box of 168 or an artists collection or something like that.
@@AbsoluteInfinitySQ when I made that comment no changes to the color rotation had need made sans Dandelion. Now they have 260 crayons, aside from fabric and construction paper crayons
120 is a great set too, it was probably a lot cheaper than 20 dollars! Haha. I wish I didn't have to buy it with the case and sharpener, the price would have been significantly lower.
Yeah, seems kind of strange that they make you buy the case and sharpener. My 120 pack came with a sharpener (a weird one that's like a crayon-man hybrid) and just a box that carries 3 smaller boxes.
Excellent review. Hey I just found it. You may already know by now...The 120 pack includes the neon colors, and you can buy the metallic and glitter separately, so you can get 152 without specifically buying the 152 pack. Thanks for your time. Oh, it's too late for your broken one but this may help someone else. You can use Gorilla glue to reattach broken tips. Then once you've colored your way down to the glue just sharpen it out. amvb.
I like to do colouring and crayons are my favourite medium. I know it's easier to do stuff with coloured pencils and I use those too. But I just love the softness of crayons.

A fantastic range of colours- although I don't envy you for swatching and labelling them all. Wow! I've experienced that crayons are quite difficult to blend and get smooth colour laydown because of the high wax content and relatively low pigment load compared to student/artist grade supplies. I wonder if you can counter the wax bloom and blend out using mineral spirits/paint thinner, or even possibly rubbing alcohol? It would be cool to see some experiments though :D I think it'd be really neat to see some wax resist work, or even batik (?) style work? :) I think crayons are really versatile. It makes me wonder how far the medium can be pushed ^_^
It was actually surprisingly fast - it took maybe half an hour? I had a system going by the end of it. Luckily crayons like to show their colour quite easily on the paper, so a simple circular motion was enough for a swatch :) They are difficult to blend for sure. I'm finding that the best way is to colour light with lots of layers, and only apply severe pressure when necessary. I'm really enjoying the grainy texture they're creating on the page. A crayon experiment video could be really cool. You guys come up with such neat video ideas, I want to film them all now, haha! I was wondering what you meant by wax resist work? I googled it. Is it when you use wax first, then the watercolour over it (or other media)? I do that with easter eggs sometimes! I'll use a clear crayon to make an invisible design, then dip the eggs in the dye to reveal the patterns.
JelArts JelArts Yep! That's wax resist alright :) It's most often demonstrated using the white crayon because it seems invisible, but I think using coloured crayons would make for some neat effects too! I'm pleased that the swatching was fast! It's awesome that you're feeling inspired :D
JelArts a friend got me onto crayons. For blending turpentine is used but as we both have asthma we use linseed oil and it does blend pastels. Otherwise you can use a craft silicone top tool which moves the pastel along. I’ve just started playing with them and you’re right they’re fun!

I got an off brand set of 100 crayons for under $5, so I thought why not? and bought them. Will be nice to do a cheap art supply doodle with them since they had a lot of pale colors. X:
Nice! Crayons are cheap fun! And the funny thing is what when you're using them, they don't feel cheap. They actually have really nice pigmentation and such a cool texture unlike any other medium.
I actually was planning on buying a 152 or a 200 crayon box. I need specifics if there is a 200 crayon box. Also planning on buying a gem tone from Canada. Zircon sadly is not on The list here in the US. But I’m proud of you. Fantastic job.

this vibrant package has too many colors to choose from this 152 box to have in this collection I have 150 crayons and also 120 crayons alltogether to get all 152 crayons to check the difference this colors has vibrant crayons if you have one you will enjoy it

Challenge, use a random number generator to pick a pack of eight and use those eight to make a painting/drawing whatever.
